So I have two things to say about this:

Okie-dokie so that turned out way longer than I thought. It was just kind of a wall of text so I tried to format it for easier reading. Also u/Micro_Social this is for you too but I just ended up to the parent comment you also replied to instead of to you directly. But lol this was supposed to basically be: 1- Be kinder to yourself and learn to forgive yourself. 2-Look at this cool goals planner I found. But ended up being so much longer. Hope it's worth the read 😂
I'm a big advocate of planners and to do lists and goals. So I have a notebook dedicated to random thoughts/to do lists. I also have a Create 365 planner for my schedule for work, appointments, dates, birthdays, daily to do lists, goals for the week, goals for the month, etc. It helps keep my days from being incredibly overwhelming and let's me know the last time I did certain things. Not just work related, but in my personal life, too.
I recommend the app UFYH(Unfuck your Habitat) or the tumblr site. Those are more for like... Household organization/cleaning/etc. It's been inspiring and has a lot of good ideas for keeping yourself from looking at it and going "IT'S TOO MUCH!"
I like this in my kitchen and on my desk. I like everything having a certain place, y'know. Keeps things from getting too lost all the time. ;)
When it comes to your self esteem and self confidence, I recommend taking up a hobby! Learning something new can make you feel better about yourself, keep yourself entertained, and if you ever want to turn your brain off to what's going on, just go ahead and start looking in to something new. Develop a new skill.
Also, journaling. Even if you're just writing a sentence regarding something positive or small that made you happy with life or yourself, think about remembering it. Or the app Happier! I love that app.
And in regards to making you happy, here's a man proposing to his wife after a cochlear implant. I thought this was way too sweet to not share.
Edited to add :: /r/personalfinance /r/planner and /r/EatCheapAndHealthy are great reddits to hang out in for advice and tips
Hey fellow failed artist!!! I've been in almost exactly your shoes, with the exception that I wanted to be a musician (the next Primal Scream or Chemical Brothers) instead of an actor. It's equally tough.
The closest I got was a fairly decent project studio where I had paying customers (enough to keep me in new gear when I needed it) and an admin job within the music industry, which I "worked" at for 10 years.
If you're like me, then drugs are a no go. They just can't happen. They'll only fuck you up. So if you want to make any progress in life and you haven't stopped yet you need to stop taking drugs now, stop drinking too if need be; especially if that leads you on to drugs during the night, which in my case it usually did.
In my case that meant I needed to stop hanging around with my friends for more than six months, unless it was a drug/alcohol free event, which was never the case. And when I did start hanging with them again it was only if there was no weed being smoked (passive weed smoking is a great way to get drawn back in). Also if we were out for a beer and coke or speed arrived I'd finish my beer and make my way home.
Anyway, if drugs is still a thing in your life you need to stop it. Expect that process to take at least a year. If you fall off the wagon one night just climb back on again. If you don't stop with drugs, then yes, this is it for your life from now on, most likely.
Next - no one is going to change you life for you but you. Get that into your head, it doesn't matter how hard or easy your life has been, how wronged you've been or how many chances you did or didn't get in life - it's ENTIRELY on you, no one else.
Start thinking long term. If you want to change something, like move career to something more meaningful, you need to have a long hard think about that. Forget about fame, forget about getting rich, forget about easy street. Look for something you are interested enough in that you are willing to put in the work long term and start taking MEANINGFUL steps towards that goal. Does that mean going back to school? some other sort of training?? beginning as a hobby? joining local community groups or going to meetups maybe?? Start there.
If you're really hating your job right now, can you look for something even slightly more related to the field you're interested in to help you along the path then do it. How about joining a community drama group, and do acting as a hobby while you fix yourself?
Truth be told, when I was at where you are at now it took me almost 3 years to clean myself up (drugs, drink, paranoia and other fallout after nearly a decade of drug abuse) to the point where I felt confident enough to get a job I was interested in, then I worked that job for almost 10 years until I got bored and finally made the decision to go back to college at 35 years old. Now I couldn't be happier. Things are great.
But it's all down to planning, long term thinking, grit and determination.
Also, get proper sleep and exercise. Seriously, if you're not doing it already it'll make a massive difference.
I also would have been lost without this day planner. It helped me maintain the focus I need to get where I needed to get, check it out and give it a try. I still use one daily:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Action-Day-2019-Management-Thread-Bound/dp/9935480569/ref=sr_1_5?s=officeproduct&ie=UTF8&qid=1549795962&sr=1-5&keywords=action+day+planner+2019
Read the instructions and philosophy of how to use it and get started.
Finally, as others have said, if you're trying to avoid drugs then working at a beach bar isn't ideal. But otherwise, working at a beach bar is fucking easy if that's all you want. Save a few grand for tickets, a few grand to get started and away you go. It's not rocket science. You could probably find a job before you leave if you really wanted to.
Edit: A quick edit for the "Hah, yeah, like it's so EASY to just get a few grand together" crowd - yeah it is, OP had no problem getting money together for drugs/alcohol/cigarettes, drop any one of those and save the money it'll add up quickly.
Just recently got this same deal too! I’m turning it into a budget planner for my mom and opted for this snap on pouch (I couldn’t find the link to it on the Michael’s website, but I found it in their store with the other regular priced Happy Planner stuff) It matches the pattern and the size really well and sits really nicely against the back, and felt like a better alternative to the stick-on pen loop I was gonna get for it, since you can use it for multiple, different items. They were having a 40% off sale on all planner stuff when I went last week, so it made the planner feel like even more of a steal.
I also picked up an awesome large list/ sticky note pad from that same section that I think acts as a good place to jot down notes without having to add too much weight and extra paper to the small rings.
& It also never hurts to add a dashboard to pop any cute sticky notes onto! here are some pictures I just took because I was too excited about this not to share! 😂
For what it's worth, I think the LT1917 has become a standard because the original Bullet Journal web page sells them under their brand.
As mentioned here, LT1917 is 80gsm, which is relatively thin and makes a lot of pens bleed through and ghost. For more information about bleeding, ghosting, and general comparison between notebooks I recommend watching Which Notebook is the Best for Bullet Journaling?! (skip to 11:00 to see the comparison chart). I prefer Scribbles That Matter which is thicker (100gsm) and feels smoother to write on. My next purchase will probably be a Midori with 120gsm or a Rhodia to try them out.
One of the core principals of Bullet Journalism is that there are no hard rules. While it comes with some guidelines, you are free to use it however you see fit. Which means that there are no predefined pages. So for the most part you are going to be drawing the layouts. And this is why a Dotted paper helps because you can use the dots to draw your own layouts. You can checkout Pinterest for inspiration. The community uses the term "spreads" to signify two-page layouts used for all sorts of things.
As for pens, many recommend the Sakura Pigma Micron for good reason. While I use them for more "serious" work, when it comes to EDC I would highly recommend the Muji 0.38mm Fine Point Gel Pens. Unlike the Microns, they are not felt tip (which is why I wouldn't use them for EDC) but very sharp ball point pen with great consistency. A lot of people swear by the Pilot G2 0.38mm Ultra Fine Point but personally I wasn't pleased with them.
Finally, regarding the things you want to track, as I mentioned earlier, you can simply define the layouts of each page and track whatever you wish. A lot of the spreads you see from the community are really intricate. You can find a variety of them from very crazy daily layouts to minimal ones. It's all up to you.
Having said that, if drawing your own layouts daily seems like a lot of work (a lot of people actually spend a few hours planning them beforehand), then you might want to consider a more traditional Planner instead. As mentioned ITT, the Nomadic Planner has good paper (125gsm), weekly and monthly pages as well as lined and blanks for notes and the rest.
There is a whole universe of things to consider (and I'm more than happy to geek out about it), but I'd say just start with whatever. Don't think about it too much. Most of the negatives are personal, so while LT1917 doesn't work for some, it might for you. You'll figure things out as you go.
Hi, I've gone through the same stuff, and sorry to break it to you but you never completely change, but you CAN put in a lot of structures around you to make it easier for you to follow through on what you want to do. Here are some tips that worked for me.
a) Don't schedule more than 5 small tasks for the day, just make sure they're 5 useful ones that'll get you started on whatever project it is. Try to setting out the things you need for the task ahead of time, like just putting your workout clothes out on your bed. Overplanning your day with a schedule of exactly what you're going to do (which you're likely to not follow anyway) is just a distraction from actually doing something.
b) Get yourself out of the house (which might be hard itself) and take JUST the things you need to work and go sit down somewhere your computer screen is visible [ like a cafe ] and then try to work in in 25 minute chunks of time (Pomodoro Technique : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique). If you can bring a friend along to chat with during those 5 minute breaks, that helps!
c) Try using this journal (https://www.amazon.com/Go-Journal-Cultivate-Gratitude-self-Reflection/dp/B01MY29EBA/ref=sr_1_39?keywords=90+day+journal&qid=1572460766&sr=8-39) so you don't have to spend that much energy setting things up, and also concretize goals and small actions you can take towards them. I recommend trying TINY actions for each day, such as just opening a textbook to the right page or drafting bullet points for an important e-mail rather than actually writing it & sending it out ( I get fear paralysis).
d) Watch this Ted Talk which provides a framework about what to do when you're procrastinating, I think you might relate to a lot of what this guy talks about: https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_urban_inside_the_mind_of_a_master_procrastinator
e) If you can afford it, try some apps/systems that make you lose money when you don't follow through on an action you had decided you would do, eg. my gym charges me $15 for each booked class I don't show up to, and that definitely gets me going.
f) The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is a really compelling read on how habits determine what we do & don't do, and how we can form new habits to change the way we live. You can try implementing a couple of those, and there's a lot more content on the topic out there.
e) The moment you have an impulse or any motivation to do something, drop everything else and MOVE to do it right away, don't just write it in your endless to do list.
Sorry this is a lot, and isn't all connected, but I hope it helps!
Have you seen the Scribbles That Matter Bullet Planner?
I’ll see if I can find a link. It was my plan if I found I couldn’t keep up with bujo at law school, but I find that I like my bujo even more now.
Personally I find the passion planner too claustrophobic but they are super popular. I have to say though that I’m excited to try their new daily version. The hibonachi cousin is pretty awesome too.
Edit: scribbles that matter bullet planner
You've gotten excellent advice on inks, and some on notebooks. You mentioned being overwhelmed by the choices, but wanting a sturdy notebook that can handle fountain pen ink. There are a few choices mentioned in here, but perhaps I can help summarize this. Key thing you will want is a high gsm (Grams per Square Meter), since a high gsm means thicker paper.
Wishing you and your daughter the best during these hard times.
I believe for the postcard exchange (and all other 0 credit exchanges) the $20 minimum is waived. But trust me, there are still ways. The shopaholic in me believes this to be true! Like:
For someone who says they have a large collection of postcards: https://www.amazon.com/Postcard-Classic-Hobbymaster-collection-expandable/dp/B002ER0I9A/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1474682310&sr=8-7&keywords=postcard+book
For the Disney lover: https://www.amazon.com/Art-Disney-Golden-Age-1937-1961/dp/1452122296/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1474682310&sr=8-3&keywords=postcard+book
For the psychology student: https://www.amazon.com/PostSecret-Extraordinary-Confessions-Ordinary-Lives/dp/0060899190/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474682439&sr=8-1&keywords=post+secret
From the one who dreams of going to NYC someday: https://www.amazon.com/3dRose-Greetings-Scenic-Postcard-Reproduction/dp/B016YHAFNO/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1474682761&sr=8-16&keywords=postcards+fabric+greetings+from (plus a pillow for that)
For me, these exchanges are about creativity. I love playing off the theme, finding something that really suits the person and thinking outside the box about it all. But that might just be me.
Reading your goals every day is something recommended by a lot of people. It's not something I personally do though.
You can get a goal tracker. One I've used in the past is by Zig Ziglar. You can check it out here. At the top of each two page spread you put the four goals you're working on for the week and the progress you made toward each goal every day. If you did nothing that day you write "nothing" in red. Then it's easy to look back during a weekly review and see three, four, seven! red marks for a goal and it can help kick you into gear for the next week.
This year I'm using a different planner. I'm going to try the Panda Planner which is a little less specific goal tracking and has more with wins and learnings for the day as well as a gratitude section. I'm trying to step up my gratitude game this year and this seemed like a good planner to use rather than trying to shove other things into the Ziglar one.
scribbles that matter on amazon is only $20! the pages are white and 160gsm. It's the same thickness as archer and olive, but there's free shipping through prime and $10 cheaper! highly recommend, i love mine. if you get it from a different website, make sure you get the pro version, since that's the one with the thick pages
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072LL2W46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GDetDb4Y9PQE0
I don't have any mech mods but I do have a 100W Sigelei, a 20W Istick, MVP 2 and a few other cheaper mods....I'm using the Maxpedition Beefy and it's an AMAZING bag.
Has plenty of Velcro holders for my juices, batteries, mods, etc...a large internal zip pocket, outside Velcro pocket and an internal sleeve type pocket. Best price I found it for was on Amazon [CLICK HERE] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQ6E5XQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Hope this helps

Okay, I bought a blank bullet journal (just dotted) and that was a fail. BUT THEN I bought this one that has pretty printed non-dated week and month pages and it's awesome! I love it. Sorry for formatting I'm on my phone.
https://www.amazon.com/Bullet-Journal-Undated-Planner-Productive/dp/B078GZ6SLL?ref_=bl_dp_s_mw_14960085011
It's an Oxford Black n Red.....soft cover, ruled with numbered pages. It's very nice, but I'd love if they done a dotted version
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PFWX50K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vN8HDb2YK5N0G
It matches my original plan to have a simple black and red theme throughout......when I get a proper dotted journal, it'll be a black one with a red pen loop lol
I can definitely recommend Scribbles That Matter! They ghost a little bit too, but not as bad as the Leuchtturm. I love the cover with doodles on it, but they have plain covers too :)
I bought this one and LOVE IT!! It came with 2 notebooks, a pen clip, travel stickers, a clear pouch for cards, papers, and whatnot that has a zipper pouch side. Its already set up with a spare elastic. I bought it for $19 USD but it was also on prime then. The leather is nice and really thick. If you want pictures look at the reviews. They are very accurate.
Some people complain about scuffs in the leather but I saw a tutorial (can't find it now) where you rub the scuff with your finger in different directions - up, down, left, right - and it will clear it up. (Like a konami code for leather.) Mine arrived scuff free but has gotten a few threw daily use. This trick worked every time.

I'm gonna throw this out there, but try a Panda Planner weekly. Like you, I'm an ex-bullet-journaler, and this physical planner has solved all my problems. It's undated, but goes a whole year so you can get it whenever. I love literally everything about it: the weekly review, the monthly habit, the lists functions, the gratitude, the Top 3 priorities... If you are thinking of digital this isn't for you, but the last two months have been nothing short of amazing for me using this planner.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IIK698K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_EPTYzb1AWZ4VZ
The nice thing is that they are spiral-bound so it could easily be unbound and rebound with tougher covers.
Or if you don't want to deal with binding, a leather wrap could work (something like https://www.amazon.com/Leather-Journal-Writing-Notebook-Handmade/dp/B07FS3SPCV?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-brave-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B07FS3SPCV)
If you get creative, it could be themed to the games you play.
Organize harder! More compartments! More containers! Put a compartment into a container!
(This is something that I said to my mom when she was drooling over a Container Store catalog one day.) :D
/u/jahinfrance, there are a few good planners out there that aren't just "To Do Lists" and dates. I haven't used this one, but I've heard good things from others. Not sure what motivates you, but there are a bunch of different types of the same concept. (Not sure if this particular brand is too cheesy for your tastes, but I like that they have different inserts for different goals.)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGCLFG9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RTFsDbMZ4RT9Y
Here's the one I got. Got a couple holders for cards and could def store some cash. It also has a little loop that fits the space pen great. Fits in all my back pockets pretty well.
Quality is pretty great considering the price, I'd say. The cover of mine has a bit of wear, but I sit on it and toss it around all the time. I'd def recommend this one.
Absolutely! Good quality paper doesn't need to be horrendously expensive.
For example, I search out 90gsm optik paper and I've found it in Oxford Black n' Red notebooks.
They're fabulous for fountain pens and excellent value for money.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00PFWX50K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Dingbats sells 100gsm paper with page numbers which are fountain pen friendly!
Scribbles that Matter also have 100gsm, fountain pen friendly paper that also have page numbers. Scribbles that Matters has different cover types, which range from your generic solid colours to “creative” ones with little doodles imprinted into the covers as well.
Again, I'll photo the load tonight but I'm hoping this will help my post stay up and not be deleted until I can. Thanks!

There it is. I don't get the bad reviews though. I am super happy with it.
I'd highly recommend the size B5 if you want something bigger than A5, it's not quite as big as A4. Some brands which sell B5 in dot grid are scribbles that matter (also highly recommend) and I've seen moleskin ones too!
Dotted Journal by Scribbles That Matter - No Bleed Dotted Notebook with Inner Pocket - B5 (Charcoal) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07M71M2MY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_t-83CbKNQ6ZB4
This is the scribbles that matter one from amazon 😊
I think your best bet is to get whatever bag you want and then fill it with smaller pouches & organizers.
This in particular looks amazing & I’m going to get it for a new bag I just got:
Hynes Eagle Universal Backpack Insert Organizer Travel Bag Slip Gadget Organization Kit Military Green
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072R2514J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_g3QzDbDE74PWF
As for organizers & pouches, Maxpedition is one of my favorite brands:
Maxpedition Gear Beefy Pocket Organizer, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AQ6E5XQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_G4QzDbPXV2RMZ
Overall, I think you’ll find it much easier to carry multiple little pouches / bags / organizers inside of your main bag.
That way it gives you the ability to do what you want, which is carry whatever bag you want but still be organized.
Maxpedition Organizers:
There are tons of videos on YouTube showcasing size and items most people like to put in them. This would be worth looking into. Some other reputable brands I have seen are Vanquest and Condor. Personally, I use the EDC organizer from Maxpedition in my 5.11 Rush 12 backpack. I highly recommend it.
When I got the MBP with USB-C, I had to get multiple dongles to connect. A friend turned me onto this bag:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQ6E5XQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Great bag for small cables, dongles, flash drives, etc. Very roomy.
These two YT videos were really helpful in my decision making:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDT1A4OasJQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAxlrUf05ok
The hosts did a really good job of breaking down the assessment into requirements and showing off each type of notebook. I ended up going with a "Scribbles That Matter A5 Pro" notebook. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GWMZZGW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Scribbles That Matter. $19 on amazon, amazing quality: https://www.amazon.com/Dotted-Journal-Scribbles-That-Matter/dp/B072LL2W46/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=scribbles+that+matter&qid=1554743827&s=gateway&sr=8-3 No bleeding, very little ghosting, fountain pen and watercolor friendly. Pre-numbered, included index and key. And the paper is actually 115g now (the description says 100).
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FS3SPCV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 enjoy my friend
I want to see this too!!
My own ring is a smidge too big, and I'm almost afraid to get it resized since it's white topaz and not a fancy cut diamond. I bought a pack of ring adjusters - basically a plastic mini-slinky to loop around the ring. They've been a huge help!
Thanks for the video, Doug. Have you thought about getting a Hobonichi Cousin, which is a little larger A5 size? You can get it directly from Hobonichi in Japan, or from Amazon. I really like my Cousin.
I really like this idea. I actually just purchased a Scribbles That Matter Bullet Planner because I've found that I have less time to spend on my bullet journal lately. It's still open ended in terms of designing pages and decorating spreads, just with a bit more structure, and I'm really excited to see how it works out!
Sounds like then she doesn't need anything too thick. Anything from 80 gsm to 100 gsm should be fine.
I'd recommend this dotted journal: Scribbles That Matter.
Hope this helps!

This is the planner I use, happy planner. they are pretty decorative and can be cluttered for some. I know staples has something that are much more similar in looks to yours pictured. That planner I linked is the monthly then weekly spreads, I buy a separate daily docket from the same brand that I stick in for days I feel I need the whole day planned, it's this one- here.
I really like the Scribbles That Matter brand on amazon, the kind without dumb glyphs embossed on the cover. Roughly $20, good paper thickness, nice colors, pen holder.
I tried the Leuchturm once, but found the pages to be too thin, and missed the pen loop.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072LL2W46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3-xEDbSRVBBAV
US Amazon still has it here: https://www.amazon.com/Hobonichi-Techo-Cousin-Notebook-January/dp/B01LKZLC78/
The Canadian Amazon only had one listed for resale at over CA$200+
Fair warning, buying from Amazon is kind of hit or miss on whether or not you get the extras.
Scribbles That Matter has a notebook with heavy 160 gms paper nowadays, same weight as the Olive & Archer books. Might be worth a try.
