u/GiantSimon · 4 pointsr/minipainting

All my miniatures get a steel disc glued into the base. I do this for a couple reasons. Mostly, it’s a tactile decision. I want the lightweight plastic pieces to have a mass appropriate to their size when I pick them up.

Most standard sized miniatures between 28 and 32 mm will only weigh a 3-5 grams after painted, but if you glue a 20, 25 and 30mm steel discs to their base they will weigh in around 10-14 grams. A subtle, but very noticeable improvement.  The difference is like playing with cheap plastic poker chips and heavy 14 gram 3-color clay poker chips in Vegas.

In addition to the improved haptics, there are a few other benefits of adding steel disc to the base of all your minis.

Having the steel/iron in the base allows for a lot of secondary benefits. Most obvious is the partnership with Magnets. I glue a rare-earth magnet into the base or lid of a standard film canister and use that to hold my miniatures while I’m painting. The magnet system is strong enough to hold a miniature firmly in place for painting - I’ve used it for mini’s up to 60mm.

Obviously, the film canister system acts as a good handle to hold your mini during painting. Super fast and easy to take one mini off and snap another one.  The system is cheap/simple enough that you could rig 10-12 canisters with magnets for painting large collections of troops.

IF you want to be clever, you could glue in a steel disc on the opposite end of the canister and add a row of (rare-earth) magnets somewhere near your workspace to safely store and place a mini to dry without worrying about it toppling over. Plus if you did that, the magnetic lids/bottoms of the canister will stack and stick together in storage.

For table top games that use trays to manage miniatures (Cmon’s ASOIAF for instance) the steel based-minis and a (small) magnet glued to the bottom of those trays help player usability quite a bit. The pieces snap (gently) into place and won’t topple over as easily if you ham-fist a move during the game.

Anything  like a film canister will work. A link to bulk order of a 100 I used below. The canisters come in handy for holding custom mixes of paints, PVA, basing materials, and acrylic varnishes too.  And if you don’t like magnets, poster-tack works OK.

-

NOTE RE: Glue

For gluing various plastics/resins, steel, and magnets I tried several types of glue: CA, PVA, 2-part epoxy, and hot-glue - NONE of those seem to really stick metal and plastic together in a durable way. The glue I found works was Gorilla glue. The small 2 Oz bottle is enough for hundreds of mini’s - and it goes bad in about a year at the rate we’ll use it in this hobby. — A couple caveats to this type of glue. A tiny drop is enough. The glue will tend to expand/foam/bubble slightly in the presence of water/moisture so test and plan accordingly. This isn’t a big deal, but it can create an unsightly unwanted yellow booger. I cover it in a primer coat just so it’s uniform looking.

-

In 2018, I started buy tabletop games and painting miniatures. It started as a way to divert my grandson from video games, but it’s now it’s become my hobby too.

Update
I found 2.5mm magnets here for US folks.
https://www.umagnets.com/p/n35-9mm-x-2-5mm-neodymium-disc-magnets-strong-craft-magnets-rare-earth-9-x-2-5mm-round/

Hi friends, while I am still building my Steck I wanted to go ahead and share with you my solution to the whole panel mounting bits.

The included magnets in the Steck are the adhesive flexible type and not really my type of attraction. I measured the distance to flush and found that the top panel is 1mm and the side panels are 2.5mm (near exact).

I ordered a small set of 1mm magnets on amazon and they tested out perfect. (See photos) and I could not find an exact 2.5mm because all searches came up as “balls”. Fortunately I had ordered these office/fridge magnets and inside are exactly the 2.5mm magnet I was looking for!

1mm magnets here,
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MFQ3XDV/

2.5mm donor magnets here,
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SCHYYOQ/

Later on I will make a measurement guide for the “perfect” alignment when supergluing these to your Steck panels.

I think a small guide/template with these types of magnets should have been included in the Steck; since the panels can have a lot free movement, these strong magnets provide a stricter placement making the best of these included panels.

Absolutely no prob :)

My mom reviews electronics for a living so we end up getting tons of new devices really often and generally need to find cables to match so things are being switched out and added in all the time. To make it more convenient instead of having to go sort through a box or into a drawer and untangle cables I wanted something super easy access to so that if i needed an hdmi , bam, I had one. Same with the others.

For the controllers I used Stick-On Game Controller Hooks 2 Pack. The snes and nes usb controllers are simply hung via a tack.

I got a simple ~$10 corkboard from walmart, used a label maker for the labels and then used CraZy TACKz 36tacks to hang the cables. I wouldn't recommend them though, a standard tack works better honestly ( In theory a hook is great but they loosen and then swing around making it a pain to re-orient them when you're taking things on and off frequently.)

The headphones under the desk is The Anchor Great adhesive, super cheap and can orient it vertically or horizontally which lets you fit two pair ( in my case one for skype/discord+gaming and the other for general use since it has better quality but no mic)

---
For anyone else curious about the other pieces of the set up:

the desk is Series A:72inch Desk by Bush Business Furinture.

The lights are EconoLed RGB 5M 3528 LED Strip Light 300leds

Mousepad is Reflex Lab Huge Gaming Mouse Pad

The headphones are :
SteelSeries Arctis 5
and Audio-Technica ATH-A900X

Monitors are : ASUS VN279QL and Dell U3417W FR3PK

Keyboard is : Razer BlackWidow X Tournament Edition Chroma

Mouse is : Razer Naga Hex v2

Hi Everyone OP here. This project is something I wanted to do for years but I wanted it done right. I'm not super skilled in the DIY area so I wanted to make this process as simple as possible and I think I accomplished that! Feel free to post any questions about this and I will respond as quickly as possible. However, here are the very high level steps outline below.

How to Make a Framed Corkboard Map
1.Purchase corkboard, map, and map pins from Amazon or somewhere else
2.Unscrew corkboard frame
3.Tape map every 2 to 3 inches to the corkboard on all four sides
Note: Start at the top, and then move clockwise.
4.Place frame back on corkboard. Be careful not to snag the map
Note: This process may take a little finesse and time. For me it was easier to put the top and bottom on first the fit the sides.
5.Screw the corner brackets back in
6.Apply pins as you wish!

I really like these magnets personally. I feel they are a nice line between cutesy and artsy, they fall within your budget, I don't expect they'll take 3 weeks to be delivered if you were to buy them. Unfortunately I cannot at all speak to their utility since I don't own them, but the picture of these magnets implies that they aren't at all lacking in that department either. Thank you for holding the contest :), I hope you find nice magnets in any case even if these ones aren't to your taste.

u/margalicious · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have to do a welcome back bulletin board for my residents when I get back to school. Because I'm such a crafty turtle, I'm going to do a board with a map of the United States that has little pins at each resident's home town. Each pin will have a string attached to it, and all the strings will meet at the location of our campus! To do this, I need both map pins and the map.

Great contest! Thank you!

u/Fred7099 · 2 pointsr/DIY

I wouldn't trust glue to hold this. The picture looks like they just used large decorative head nails similar to these:

Lots of pockets, $6.95 shipping

Prime Eligible

Since the order might be over $25.00 Here are a couple of add-ons that would be awesome. Add on 1 and Add on 2. If it's not eligible for add ons then this or this would be great!

u/redlinefurry · 4 pointsr/shittykickstarters

But...is that extra housing really making it a $15 a pop magnet? I guess I just don't get it. To me the selling point is the strength of it. Maybe I did miss the mark here.

They ran one campaign already though- so shouldn't that money have gone to the equipment they need?

Also do you mean at 1" by 3/4" each one would be $100? Wow!

It that why a neodyium set like this 48 for $13 one is done in acrylic that can be injected/cast?

u/Gigafrost · 1 pointr/anime

Wallscrolls have some nice flexibility. Take two push pins, push into the wall at the right distance, and you can rest the top bar of the wallscroll on the pins. The advantage? Since only gravity is holding it up you can easily and quickly replace it with other wallscrolls.

u/esuldashi · 2 pointsr/AskElectronics

This is an experimental board, with coils of different sizes, to see what works best. Some of the coils also have holes in the middle, of different sizes, so I can experiment with adding a steel thumbtack to serve as the hysteresis element. They are standard thumbtacks that you can buy in office supply stores. The plan is to hold them in place by making the hole a bit small and jamming the thumbtack in. It's not something that can be removed once in place. So now the idea is to find an ideal hole size and thumb tack size to achieve this effect.

Strong refrigerator magnets (I love these ones)

u/Bill0405 · 2 pointsr/Vive

I was in your exact situation and here's what I did.

I ordered 2 of these to fill my 10' x 10' playspace https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B017HQVOP4/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ordered 5 boxes of these to attach them. 1 in each corner, and 1 in the middle of each tile. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001PLOM8Y/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I angled the pins so that they went all the way in and are sturdier.

For mounting the lighthouses, it would be best to mount on a sturdier wall similar to the way I did in my image.

Here's what it looks like. https://i.sli.mg/8ICrPn.jpg

u/Pineandsparrow · 2 pointsr/knitting

I use these and either these or these. Soak it for about 30 minutes, then press out as much of the water as you can with your hands (squeeze gently, don’t wring it) and then using two towels (step on it!). Then arrange the mat pieces into a long strip on the carpet or a table (protect it with a towel or something) and stretch it as long as you’d like and as wide as it’ll go and pin it to the board in even sections. If you do end up blocking it, take before and after photos so you can see the difference. This is my favorite part 🙃

u/clamstabber · 1 pointr/Nails

It might have another name but it's that putty thing that you use to stick posters and stuff to walls. It should be easy enough to find. Here's a link on amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001OZI70/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_vq56xbCKKGW0A

Or buy T-pins at Walmart type superstore or order on Amazon here....

https://www.amazon.com/ADVANTUS-Gem-1-5-Inch-T-Pins-100/dp/B001PLOM8Y

They’re great and only leave minuscule holes. Much smaller than a thumb tack.

You can move them & reuse them too!

u/BenjaminAhr · 2 pointsr/podcasts

I don't know if there is any wrong way to do it, other than just getting foam on as many of the hard surfaces as you can. Reverb is about sound being able to bounce around a space for a long time, and every dead surface a sound wave encounters is going to reduce the amount of reverb. So get a rug down if you have a hard floor, think about your ceilings and put foam tiles up on the walls!

I don't know if this is the kind of 'trick' you're looking for, but I built out a podcasting studio for work last year and I didn't want to use spray adhesive to get the tiles stuck to the walls, so what I ended up using were these T pins. They stick into drywall nicely, and are pretty secure if you give them a couple taps with a mallet.

u/beancrosby · 2 pointsr/TheFence

It was nice meeting you too! Here is the shadow box I mentioned that you can mount your stick in. You can use these hooks to mount it. You might need to bend them with pliers to adjust them to fit the stick diameter.

u/nacho_cheezus · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

best i can do

u/crackered · 2 pointsr/Chefit

You can probably make your own using some sort of rubber roller (e.g., from hardware store or the web) and push pins.

With the pins, remove the needle from the plastic, then push/hammer the sharp end into the rubber roller too whatever depth and spacing you want.

edit: and obviously make sure you don't lose a push pin tip in the food!!

u/casualsax · 1 pointr/pathofexile

Please do me a favor and get some black push pins.

u/Sieberella · 2 pointsr/Wishlist

I think these Mustache pins are pretty bad ass! Thanks for the contest :D

u/BEEF_WIENERS · 8 pointsr/SchlockMercenary

https://www.amazon.com/ADVANTUS-Triangular-Flags-Assorted-MF375/dp/B00125KYF8

Let's go with that pin. Assuming that they can get them down to half-price through bulk discounting, this would be an order of about $10,000,000. At which point I'm assuming that the artisanal office supplies maker would make 200 pins, pay somebody a million dollars to gateclone that batch a million times, and get away having spent an hour or so with a 9 million dollar profit. Just, convert dollars to whichever galactic currency from a thousand years in the future that you please.

Also, assuming that those pins are about a hundredth of an inch in diameter (the site says they're one inch long), you've got just over a quarter of a cubic meter of steel in this thing, which will weigh over 2000 kilograms. That's not accounting for the paper flags either.

u/Lady_Hippo · 1 pointr/knitting

Here's what I did before I assembled my blocking kit:

0. Buy t-pins

  1. Rinse knit in sink without any soap

  2. Roll in towel and stomp on it to remove excess water

  3. Lay out a couple fresh clean garbage bags on carpet or spare bed.

  4. Arrange knit on bags and pin with T pins.
