  • art supplies: You should add one of these to go with these. This drawing pad to go with this set. This watercolor set is amazing. And these for some pen and ink.
  • Gardening: I feel like these are a must have in anyones garden and for whatever reason (probably because I'm a 5 year old at heart) this makes me feel like a badass but also keeps me from leaving my shears somewhere and having to carry all my tools at once. I think this is awesome for germinating.
  • Books: I just read this book and I highly recommend it and I also want to read this one which I was told was amazing. If you have a kindle you should add this or this since you like Doctor Who (theyre basically the reason I want to get a kindle).
  • Doctor who: This is awesome. Id love to have these in my kitchen and this in my bedroom. Maybe just this and this for fun.

Hope you like them and if I win I'd like this or for the raffle this because I really really want it

part 2/2

I have some posts on my spice process here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/cookingforbeginners/comments/aeic6x/beginner_spices/edqa188/?context=3

Now, that may be overkill for what you're doing, especially since you said you eat very little. But, you're still stuck with buying even a small amount of spice that may last you for a year or more. In that case, this is how I started out:

  1. Keep a list of what spices you have. I use an app called Todoist to manage my various lists of stuff (grocery list, spice list, etc.). This enables me to do two things: one, not double-buy what I already have at home when I'm out shopping, and two, get inspiration for what to make based on what I have when I look at the list (i.e. oh hey, I have some homemade taco seasoning leftover, maybe I'll throw that in with some ground beef for tacos this week)
  2. Designate a place to store your spices. I have two places: a cupboard, and a go-to rack for my "essentials" (Kosher salt in a salt pig, black pepper in a grinder, garlic salt, etc.). If you don't have a ridiculous number of spices & use standard off-the-shelf bottles, you may find a spice shelf a handy organizational tool to have.
  3. Alphabetize them. It's sooooo annoying having to dig through your spice collection to find the one that you need.

Other than that, you're more or less stuck with buying the minimum quantity required to meet your needs. There are a few ways to deal with this:

  4. Setup a calendar entry to go through your spice collection once a month & purge what you don't need or what is old, and re-alphabetize them as needed. Sauces in particular can go bad quickly.
  5. Use fresh ingredients, which often allows you to control the quantity your purchase. You mentioned garlic - most grocery stores sell them as single heads, so you don't always have to buy a whole six-pack or whatever. Whole Foods lets you measure out your own spices.
  6. Make your own stuff, either by grinding/zesting (whole nutmeg/peppercorns/etc. will last a pretty long time) or doing sauces or whatever, which lets you control the quantity of fresh ingredients.
  7. Buy what you need on a week to week basis. I typically do my meal planning once a week, for the week ahead, and then look in my inventory to see what I have & put the rest on a shopping list.
  8. Learn how to freeze different items. I use a cheap vacuum sealer off Amazon. You can freeze fresh herbs in olive oil in an ice cube tray. There's lots of little handy tricks like that available, which is also why I like to do my meal-planning on a weekly basis, as I can keep a rotating stock of what I need, and then purge old stuff on a monthly basis based on a calendar reminder. This ensures that I'm using fresh stuff & aren't getting cluttered up.

The bottom line is that having a spice inventory is just kind of one of the "costs of doing business" of cooking at home, but there are a few tricks to managing it better, like alphabetizing them in a dedicated space & purging your inventory based on a monthly calendar reminder, which takes all of five minutes even for the largest spice collection.

Sauces & spices are, to me, the King & Queen of Flavor. Food by itself is just kind of meh most of the time...chicken & noodles are okay, but throw on a great Alfredo sauce & you've got it made! Pork is good, but throw on an amazing spice rub & smoke it & you've got yourself an amazing pulled-pork sandwich! Throw some chimichurri on some marinated steak. Even simple things like homemade Ranch sauce can be amazing flavorful.

Thus, I think realistically, the best you can expect to do is (1) you have to have some sort of inventory of spices, due to the way they are sold, and (2) you can design a basic system for managing them, ex. alphabetizing them, purging your inventory on a monthly basis, adding in what you need on a weekly basis, etc. or however you want to approach it, just because of the nature of the spices themselves.
u/PresentPicker · 1 pointr/Gifts

For the time being, I'd lean away from a heart or hearts theme. Might be best to be a little more subtle until you've identified where your relationship is going. You could take a more innocent angle with a Two Peas in a Pod Theme which could be taken as either "friends" or "more than friends".

Similarly, putting together a scrapbook of pictures, movie stubs, menu from your favorite restaurant along with hand written notes next to each of the items is a memorable gift.

Or something thoughtful, yet simple, like Custom Map Key Ring of her home city in Japan (if they are able to do international maps) or Birth Month Flower Earrings.

With her being from Japan, there are some customs she may follow...

  • If she gives you one chocolate for Valentine's Day, that is seen as a obligatory gift for colleagues and other male friends; however, if you receive more than one chocolate, then she (if following custom) considers you more than a friend. In the latter case, on March 14, then you should give her more expensive chocolates.
  • Gift wrapping should be taken seriously
  • Custom says that gifts should be given and received with two hands.
  • Avoid the numbers 4 or 9 with your gifts as those numbers are considered unlucky. Though, items in pairs or with the number 8 are considered lucky.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

I fell in love with these kitty socks as soon as I spotted them ♥ I think you should get them too :D

Also, gonna assume that you like rice, so you will need this for your rice serving needs :D If you like some salt and pepper with your food, this will help add some flavour to your home!

Or how about a crack in the universe?

♥♥♥ perpetually angst-ridden ass fucks ♥♥♥

u/misseff · 3 pointsr/TwoXChromosomes

These are the only kinds of gifts I really like. Unless it's something non-practical that I really, really want or is very thoughtful(like, a video game that just came out or the couple of times I've received meaningful jewelry), I'm very happy to receive things like kitchen appliances I need or socks or even grocery store gift cards.

However, some girls don't like it. It really depends on how your girlfriend is, and you know her best. I'd think if she's moving out, something like a Kitchenaid mixer for her new place would be a very welcome gift if she likes to cook. Not sure if you were looking to spend that much though. I know I pretty much died when I opened the box and saw mine. You could also go for something decorative, kind of in between practical/typical gift territory and keep it cheaper. I like to give salt and pepper shakers, everyone uses them and they can be cute and quirky. Some examples: 1 2 3 4

I work in high end makeup so everyone who doesn't know me thinks I'm a girly girl but I'm actually a total nerd. I have a full ride scholarship, I love video games and books and sci-fi movies and shows and I generally don't get along with other women. I'm not sure how I'm so good at my job lol. I do love makeup a lot though.

I would love these bad boys because I'm not enough of a nerd already lol ;)

What's something you love?

u/MsLarvox · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I loveee my gram grams. She is amazing. I love her so much. She cooks the best food, and tells the best stories. Idk seriously loveee her <3

My grams she lovesss unicorn and cow stuff lol.. I have no idea what I'm getting her though. (her birthday soon xD ) I know her collection of unicorn stuff is crazy so I want to get her some cow stuff. Maybe something like this and some more things like it. Cause she loves these types of things.

I might have a few ideas for you: First don't forget to take a can opener, a knife for chopping and slicing, and a cutting board to work with. you might also want to take a dish cloth that you can use while there and spices. Make a list of the spices you will need for the dishes you intend to cook and get travel spice containers to take with. it will cost a mint to buy those in an area you don't know.

Something like this might not be too bad

https://www.amazon.com/Pawaca-Portable-Stainless-Seasoning-Essential/dp/B07D9KZNF8/

and this could come in pretty handy even for the crock pot

https://www.amazon.com/Camp-Kitchen-Utensil-Organizer-Travel/dp/B01A1A5GAW/

and these would also be great! to take extra spices that you will only be using a little of like cinnamon etc.

--Lentils: high protein, quick cooking, cheap, can season for different kinds of meals. Dry lentils will be much lighter than canned/bagged/cooked lentils. Boil for 25 minutes.

--Quinoa: same as above! Use it like rice. It only needs to boil for about 15 minutes.

--Baked chickpeas. Do this ahead of time and pack servings in ziplock baggies. High protein, crunchy, delicious. Here's a simple recipe.

--Homemade trail mix. Nuts, seeds, dried fruits, chocolate chips, etc.

--Avocados. These need to be eaten within 2-3 days of buying them (if they're hard), but easy to cut in half and eat with a spoon and salt. The fat in avocados is awesome.

--Spices. You'll be set with salt, pepper, paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and cumin. You could get something like a Multi spice jar or ziplock baggies.

I think you should buy yourself Doctor Who Monopoly because it will help you get pumped for the 50th anniversary episode. You could also do what I am planning on doing, which is hold a Doctor Who marathon where you watch the last season and play Doctor Who monopoly. Maybe make some Doctor Who-themed treats to go along with it. Make some tardis-shaped cookies, or just frost cookies with a tardis blue color, serve up some tea and other British goodies.

I would like the Tardis vs Dalek salt and pepper shakers to use for my own Doctor Who marathon. If I put them on the table with Doctor Who and British themed food, it will look perfect!

Bunnicula!

I love southern comfort food so how about some fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac & cheese, biscuits and a veggie of your choice. Iced tea as a drink and for dessert go with banana pudding (the kind with the cookies and whipped cream). Now I'm hungry!

Can I get the easy vegan recipes one? Does this count if I'm already a vegetarian and been a vegan for 2 years?

And here is a really cute thing.

I prefer good old classic pizza shakers: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007T40P28?keywords=pizza%20shaker&qid=1452969394&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Cheap, no moving parts and easy to clean. The holes are large enough for flakey stuff or coarse ground salt and pepper.

This painting is on my private wishlist. It is breathtakingly beautiful and I have it as a reminder to paint it myself. And Ticket to Ride is on my default. That game is so fucking fun.

It’s either gonna be the vampire and wife salt and pepper shaker set, or the holographic nail polish. No idea if you think they’re interesting, but I sure do.

I brought a small camping spice container and the instructors had no issues with it. They even used it when I got it out. It'll make you a lot of friends too when everyone gathers up. I had the exact one below.

Pro tip: when you're going to a dinner served by people who can't cook, bring this and doctor up your food yourself. I swear to God, bringing your own spice shaker makes even the dullest food palatable.

They used to put little bottles of Tobasco in MREs for that reason.

You can also find camping gizmos that hold a bunch of spices.
