I think a good one for her would be Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, which is child-friendly, absolutely fantastic, and is a pioneering manga that influenced many of the series that followed it (ex. Dragon Ball). It has a lot of action and fighting but is also tempered with a warmth and humanism (even though the main character is a robot). Osamu's art style is great and really appealling: he draws his characters in a Disney-esque style (large eyes, cute faces) and is great at imparting emotional expressiveness, is good at conveying action and has a gift for page layout, and his art has a sense of momentum and dynamism that rivals many live-action films. He's also a good manga artist to start with because his style and technique influenced so many authors and series that came afterward (Cyborg 009, Dragon Ball). Dark Horse has published all 23 volumes of it, and although it's out of print you can get used copies of it for a good price. It doesn't really matter which particular volume you get, since each Astro Boy story is generally self-contained and can be understood by reading it in an of itself. (I should also note that the tankoban- i.e. collected volume- release of the series presents the stories in Tezuka's preferred reading order rather than chronologically.)

Here's a link to Vol. 1 of the Dark Horse edition: https://www.amazon.com/Astro-Boy-Vol-Osamu-Tezuka/dp/1569716765/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=&qid=1573781433&sr=8-2

Akira<br />
by Katsuhiro Otomo<br />
Genre notes: post-apocalyptic sci-fi psychic punk epic<br />
6 vols<br />
ISBN: 1632364611<br />

Akira is pretty much just legendary. One of those books that is so good that it ought to sit comfortably in the top half of any reputable Top 20 comics of all list.

And it's not just one of those books that is lauded and recognized for its place in comics history. Akira is every bit as vibrant and jaw-dropping today as it was in 1989, when I first encountered it. That a book produced in the '80s should 30 years later still feel better and more accomplished than nearly anything in the last ten years is impressive, seeing as how we are essentially living in a golden age where every living artist can do pretty much whatever kind of comic they want.

Akira spawned an awe-striking animated film that basically turned the american sense of what animation could be on its head even though Akira the movie was a piss-poor adaptation of the glories found in Akira the book. (I remember wearing out my Streamline VHS tape back in 9th grade and it's still that dub that echoes through my mind whenever I remember scenes from the movie.)

Akira is about the leader of a teen biker gang that runs the streets of Neo Tokyo, a Tokyo that has arisen from the ashes of a terrible explosion decades earlier. It's about one of that leader's lieutenants who after an accident begins to develop powerful psychic powers. It's about how those unstoppable psychic powers, powers that make him a god, are nothing next to the powers of a kid who's been on ice for decades. It's about a city under military control. It's about politics and religion and annihilation and apocalypse and drugs and revolution and lasers and hovercraft and motorcycles and a guy who really just wants to spend some sexy time with this one girl terrorist.

When Marvel first brought Akira to the US, colourizing it and having Otomo redraw a couple scenes that wouldn't likely fly on American shores (like full frontal of a teen boy, redrawn to show him from behind instead), it was a revelation. If you are picking up Akira today for the first time, it will be a revelation. Last time I reread the series, it was a revelation—the book is so thoroughly a legend, so thoroughly a part of the comics canon, that it's easy to forget just how magnificent it really is.

And if you're in the market, Kodansha is producing a deluxe 35th anniversay set, due out in October: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1632364611/

I am going to actually say you should not read Watchmen, which is usually high on people's list until you read more superhero stuff. the characters in that are superheroes cast in gritty realism.

Art / Graphic Novels

Maus -- very popular, very discussed, very good

Sandman -- Once you get over how 80's gothic this is, it is a superb story...for all 10 volumes.

TransMetropolitan -- Cyberpunk Hunter S Thompson

Fables -- Hands down one of the best series in terms of scope and planning.

Manga

Akira -- This will take you week to finish the whole series.

Pluto -- Though an actual knowledge of Astroboy would be wonderful for this, this manga is so good i was shocked at how sobering a manga could be.

Superhero

Batman -- I am going to break rank and say that Frank Miller's Batman miniseries The Dark Knight Returns isn't the best place to start atleast for Batman. It is a good read along with the Knightfall trilogy) but it is dense and famous becasue of when it was released. I am recommending Scott Snyder's new 52 Batman story arc Court of the Owls which is a two part arc edning with City of the Owls. This will also set you into current Batman. there are things that have happened before, the fight is against a new villian rather than an old one with tons of backstory. It is also drawn with style and grace and the whole thing is entertaining.

Green Lantern -- Rebirth -- This is completely one sided because I love Green Lantern and space shit. This is the beginning of the Geoff Johns run which will spill out into a huge decade long narrative culminating at The Blackest Night.

----------

As for other superheroes here are reading lists for DC and Marvel. It is really up to you what you find interesting. If you are into X-men, this podcast is really fun to get caught up with everything that has happened since the 70's. It is also hosted by a very knowledgeable husband and wife team.

do you mean you have $15 more to spend like only $15 left on a gift card, or you need $15 more to get free shipping?

because if it's the later, solanin would be a good choice (at $15.28), if you're into seinen slice of life/dramas, I'm not finding a lot of other stuff that would work very well for that situation, other than maybe akira vol 1 ($16.99)?

if it's the former, you could try: I am a hero vol 1 if you're into zombies (I haven't read it personaly, but one of my buddies that is into zombies has and really likes it), Orange vol 1 is quite good if you like shoujo romance, FMA vol 1-3 if you're looking for something classic/ haven't read it yet.

Those are just some of the first things I thought of/came across, most other manga are closer to $10 so you may have a hard time finding exactly what you're looking for, I'm still surprised you can't search, or at least sort, by price range on amazon...

u/lepracan · 1 pointr/suggestmeabook

Not too uncommon; most series that get an official translation are very popular. But don't be disheartened! You can look into older series.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Toradora, Guin Saga, Kino's Journey, Shakugan no Shana, Slayers(or try here), Gosick, Seikai: Crest of the Stars, Adventures of Duan Surk, Zaregoto, Psycho Busters, Full Metal Panic. Note here. I have not bought from rightstufanime, but they have older out of print stuff.

For newer stuff that I neglected to include, The Irregular at Magic High School, Black Bullet, Strike the Blood, The Isolator, [Trinity Seven](http://www.amazon.com/Trinity-Seven-Vol-Magicians/dp/0316263672/ref=pd_sim_14_19?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;dpID=51CzJOSWijL&amp;amp;dpSrc=sims&amp;amp;preST=_AC_UL160_SR107%2C160_&amp;amp;refRID=1Q3F3Y76HEVKVT3ER83G], Durarara, Accel World.

For your brother saying he read the previous lsited items already, I think he could appreciate Baccano and Rising of the shield hero. The shield hero fan translation is the webnovel, and there is a bit of diversion, and the light novel version is better edited, in my opinion.
Baccano had the first novel somewhat translated, but that did not continue (to my knowledge).

So ask him about these new titles, and the 2 I mentioned again. But remember if you choose one, triple check its the light novel version.

u/TalesOfFan · 1 pointr/anime

Have you tried any of the older Gundam series yet? If you like military history, the Universal Century series should be to your liking, and in my opinion they're far superior to Wing in almost every aspect.

If you're interested, I'd recommend starting with the first series (my favorite anime and the peak of the series) and watching on from there in production order.

Keep in mind that the Universal Century series all take place in the same universe and have connections. I wouldn't recommend watching them out of production order. Also, I'd only recommend watching the compilation movies after you've seen their respective series. You don't get the same amount of character development from the movies, and in the case of the Zeta Gundam movies, they have a different ending that ruins the original's tone.

Production Order:

Mobile Suit Gundam (Series: 1979; compilation movies: 1981–1982)

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Series: 1985; compilation movies: 2005-2006)

Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam (series: 1986)

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie: 1988)

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OVA: 1989)

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (movie: 1991)

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OVAs: 1991; compilation movie: 1992)

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (Series: 1993)

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OVAs: 1996, compilation movie: 1998)

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (OVAs: 2010)

You can download most of the series on BakaBT. Just search Gundam. Keep in mind you need to make an account, which is free.

Oh, and one more thing. The original, 1979 series also has a manga that was written and illustrated by the series' character designer and lead animator, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. It's called Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, and Vertical, Inc. has recently began releasing it in the West. Honestly, Origin is not just a great retelling of the original series, but also an amazing manga. If you're interested, volume one is currently available and preorders are available for volumes two through four. There should be around 12 volumes in total.

Here are the links for the manga on Amazon:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 1- Activation

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 2- Garma

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 3- Ramba Ral

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 4- Jaburo

The new release in December was only a digital one as far as I know all around the world - it's sort of unclear if that is just a redo of a lot of the older stuff but it seems to be connected to [the new deluxe editions coming out in February] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1632364212/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;psc=1).

The caution at buying these by most people is the lack of original status, in that the heavy porn scenes are removed for less direct ones. While I agree this is not the best for people that want to experience it all I actually think you should get them and try to get your hands on the uncencored both. My reason for this is as the Deleux edition description says it is supervised by Shirow Masamune and is considered definitive, he has also been quoted several times on this sub as saying he believed that the sex scenes added nothing to them and were happy for them to be removed, as he seems to have continued this trend here. His reasons of course as all speculation if you read them, I've never read anything by him explaining why he liked them being removed but the usual things would be; wider audience possibilities or separation from his other work (you know what I mean) or the answer of 'taking flak' for it.

In the end, they are all still Ghost in the Shell and you should read it. Most people, however, going from SAC or the movies do not really get the mood of the manga and it is a bit fast paced in its movement between jocularity and philosophy and cop drama alongside its strong explanations of the cyberpunk ideas that Shirow explored. So be ready for something different if you are coming from those angles - I have always heard, and personally found, its best to do all the animated content then go to the manga.

u/OndowMosa · 3 pointsr/Ghost_in_the_Shell

Wow! Thanks, individual.
So you took this yourself or you are sure it's from the new edition? If that so, thanks again. I cannot read it fully but even like that it makes more sense than the Spanish gibberish text. Haha. So versions like this one, apart from the two missing/censored pages come in Japanese reading order and sound effects plus the previously missing notes, right? Awesome!

Interesting. I had always assumed it was only the original GITS manga that had been censored for English audiences - however I have never seen that page before. Looks like it might fit somewhere about 10 pages in to chapter 1, judging from the seated pose of Motoko at the top.

Anyways. With GITS 1.0, it was my understanding that v2 (edition) was uncensored and v1 (edition) was censored. This would lead me to assume that your provided link was for the uncensored edition. However, I wanted to apply this new knowledge (that an uncensored version of translated GITS 2.0 might exist), so I just did an amazon search and noticed something careful about the descriptions for these two products. It seems it may be reverse for the GITS 2.0 manga.

  • GITS 2.0 (assumed v1 because no other indication is made)
  • GITS 2.0 (v2)

If you carefully compare the descriptions, you will notice only the first link (assumed v1) contain the text "M Ages 18+ MATURE CONTENT" - in addition to this, you can inspect the covers of both products and you will find only the first one contains a "Mature Content" label in the bottom right corner.

I wonder if that is the one you're looking for (the 1st edition of GITS:MMI).

    ------

edit this information is reinforced by the isbn db

  • ISBN10: 1935429035
  • ISBN10: 159307204X

However, I noticed you said the Kodansha print you have is censored, and according to my information the Kodansha print might be uncensored. If you can verify your ISBN value matches the ones in the link, then that might help me narrow down further.

The bigger the better - and the story matters!!!
I own a "couple" mangas and (for me) the Akira series is most definitely the best to read. It has the size of a telephone book (probably the same size as his Nausicaa volume) and gives the feeling you are reading something special ;)

u/VegettoEX · 4 pointsr/dbz

There's not much out there with Toriyama Dragon Ball GT artwork because... well... he didn't DO much artwork for it! Toriyama contributed some early character, landscape, and logo designs, and that's about it.

One place to start is the recent "Chogashu" (or "Super Art Collection") from 2013. His main design work is printed here in beautiful quality. This is available via Amazon Japan.

This stuff was originally printed in the two Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File books, which were released in 1997 but received reprints in 2006. Of course, being guide books for GT, they contain MUCH more than that, especially in terms of character designs. You will probably have to track these books down on the second-hand market.

Another (small) source of promotional GT artwork from the other main designers (folks like Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru) is the 2010 Golden Warrior art book. You'd think there would be more, but there are only a couple pages. Again, you'll need to track this down on the second-hand market.

u/ShadowSpectre47 · 8 pointsr/akira

The 25th Anniversary Box comes with a hardcover of all the Akira Volumes, an Akira patch, plus a hardcover of the Akira Club art book.

It just got reprinted and is available again on Amazon. There was a big delay in this reprint, because they wanted to strengthen the integrity of the box from the original print.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/1632364611/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_Ii2VBb8SN8XTS

Just looking at pictures of it opened is amazing. And just to let you know, the first few pages of the Manga are colored, and the rest are black and white (like the original release), it's not the American version of the printing with the full color and the extra drawn in sound effects like, "blam, blam", "Pow", "Ding", that would get in the way of the original art.

u/theevamonkey · 8 pointsr/evangelion

Sadamoto's Evangelion manga was originally released in both its original right to left orientation, and a flipped western left to right orientation with English sound effects. This was the first edition, and it covered volumes 1-7. The book design looked like this. The Japanese right to left orientation looked the same, but was marked as "Special Collector's Edition".

The second edition of the Evangelion manga discontinued the western left to right orientation. It looks like this.

So, if you're seeing both orientations, that's why. I recommend getting the omnibus versions which have several volumes per book. Here they are on Amazon:

u/Tehbeefer · 1 pointr/manga

I found most of them together at a Half-Price Books store (which was nice because I could see the actual condition, so maybe consider checking your local used bookstores every few months), and then I think I found the last two or three through Amazon marketplace or Abebooks (which I think is owned by Amazon now anyway). I will add that none of this money would actually go to the publisher/IP owners since this is a secondary sale. Also, you may find this or other software tools helpful in setting up an alert when drops to a price you're happy with.

u/Orcatato · 2 pointsr/alitabattleangel

Read it here: https://kissmanga.com/Manga/GUNNM

There will be some ad pop ups, just close 'em

Also: don't read any of the chapters that are listed with decimal points. Those are bonus chapters that are meant to be read after you finish the first series. They are formatted poorly and are mixed into the normal chapters.

——

I would highly recommend getting the real, physical books to read the manga if you like it. It'll set you back a bit in terms of cash, but it was hella worth it to me. You can get the first book (which contains vol. 1 and 2) here: https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Angel-Alita-Deluxe-1/dp/1632365987

The physical books are also kept in the original manga format (read right-to-left) instead of mirrored images of the original translation (which are the scans you will find online).

In terms of "anime girls":
Eh, it's Japanese culture. The Alita manga is far less "anime-ish" than most of them. It's a lot more accessible to western audiences, if you ask me.

Edit: none of the manga is in color, it is all pencil-drawn by the author Yukito Kishiro.

Edit 2: Anime is Japanese cartoons. Manga is Japanese comic books.

u/troyunrau · 8 pointsr/printSF

I've purchased this translation of Ghost in the Shell - it is really quite excellent.

If you don't mind not-print variants, the 1995 movie is quite good, as are the two seasons of Stand Alone Complex.

There are definitely 'Ship of Theseus' type questions - how many human parts can you replace and still be human? What happens when you replace the last part? Plus great societal implications for many of the augmentations.

In my opinion, it is the gold standard within this subgenre.

u/LegitPancak3 · 5 pointsr/LightNovels

Amazon preorder for Crest of the Stars ebook volume 1 just came up for June 9th, it literally got license rescued a couple weeks ago. They promised three-in-one hardback omnibuses starting early 2020, by the way, with Banner of the Stars for sure to come after Crest has finished. (Alternatively, you could get a $5/month membership at J-novel for weekly legal translations. Here is the free volume 1 preview ).
Don’t know about the other one, though.

u/MyrMindservant · 1 pointr/LightNovels

All You Need Is Kill

Mardock Scramble is a pretty good cyberpunk novel.

Seconding recommendation for Crest of the Stars, but the new translation is not quite ready yet. Volume one is only getting released next month and then you can either wait for volumes 2 and 3, or pay for subscription at J-Novel Club website to read the ongoing translation. Or you can wait till all 3 volumes are finished and binge it then.
Banner of the Stars translation will start after they are done with the Crest.

By the way, all titles mentioned above are regular Japanese novels, rather than light novels. It's pretty rare for pure sci-fi to be published as a light novel.

As for magitek/science fantasy, Owari no Chronicle is quite good. It's only available as fan-translation, you can find it at Baka-Tsuki. And there's an informative review at MAL.

u/PartofHistory · 2 pointsr/Gundam

To answer your first question, yes. In fact, I own the whole series personally. For your second question...if you mean the tv version of the original show, maybe. The origin is a retelling of the original show, so some stuff is different if you care enough to watch both. If you mean the Origin OVA then it doesn't matter. The OVA is basically a shot-for-shot retelling of volumes 5-7 of the Manga. It covers the flashback of Char's backstory. If anything, I'd recommend reading the Manga first. That way you can see what you read animated beautifully;)

u/soulreaverdan · 10 pointsr/Ghost_in_the_Shell

I think that if he loves the movie that much, the original manga would be a great gift for him. They released some really nice hardcover editions a year or so back.

Here's the first volume stand-alone currently at $21.87 plus shipping.

However, there's also a slipcase of all three volumes for just about double that at $43.41 plus shipping.

The first volume alone is fine depending on what you have available, since most of the stories from it are what were adapted together into the 1995 movie (the stuff that got made into the movie is spread out among more smaller stories rather than one continuous event), so you're not missing out on anything by picking it up alone.

However, the two additional volumes in the slipcase set, Volume 1.5 and Volume 2, have a lot of other really great material in them. 1.5 is the basis for the Stand Alone Complex anime, featuring a more procedural kinda storyline. Volume 2 is... trippy. It gets really deep into the transhuman aspects of the series and follows up much more directly on the stuff in volume 1, but can also get kinda hard to follow depending on how much he might be into the weird kinda philosophical aspects of it.

Hope that helps! But if you're still unsure, you absolutely can't go wrong with getting him the movie. As odd as it might sound, I'd recommend the original DVD release of the movie, since a lot of the newer releases have some odd choices made with adding in some CGI stuff or poor subtitle choices.

u/lotusfox · 2 pointsr/books

Ghost In The Shell Volume 2: Man-Machine Interface Cyber Punk tale with a complex plot, great art, and strong philosophical overtones about identity, free will, and the future evolution of mankind's consciousness.

u/NYstate · 1 pointr/television

Incredible. The manga is better, I read the Dark Horse one from the 90's.
The original anime movie was a pretty good adaption of the book. The show took the elements of both and made it a dystopian future show.

u/Tamwulf · 3 pointsr/Gunnm

That is awesome! I have the Deluxe edition box set, but everything else I've bought eBooks of. Glad I did. I had no idea the Omnibus Editions were that big!

Well, "restock" might be a misnomer, as they are saying ships within 1-2 months. https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Angel-Alita-Deluxe-Complete/dp/1632367114/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3JQYUY9UNLRF1&amp;keywords=alita+battle+angel+deluxe+edition&amp;qid=1554569724&amp;s=gateway&amp;sprefix=alita+battle+angel+delu%2Caps%2C196&amp;sr=8-4 But hey! At least they have it again!

Are you sure about that? I just found it for $39.99 on Amazon. Unless this isn’t it.

https://www.amazon.com/Steins-Gate-1-5pb/dp/1927925509

Edit 1: I see what you mean about them being $70+ and that’s weird. Do they not produce or print anymore English copies or something? I’ll keep updating this with more links.

Edit 2: I can't even find a reason for it being so expensive, all I've noticed is I can barely find the original volume 1 anywhere. The only ones I can find are used and around $30+ or new around $70+. The only one I can find at a fair price is the 2016 loot anime edition which are $35 or under on Ebay. You may have to settle with that if you want a physical copy of volume 1 if you don't wanna break your bank. Here's the link to some Ebay listings.

I am planning to buy The Garden of Words, Orange, Attack on titan. All of this is already exceeding my budget by about 500 rs. If I somehow save money I would probably buy more hahaha

u/WTFever_ · 2 pointsr/Ghost_in_the_Shell

Ooh, the new unaltered manga from Kodansha is out? Awesome!

Edit 1 - It actually looks like your picture is something different from what I meant: https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Shell-1-Deluxe/dp/1632364212/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8 /u/Symon_joestar, what version of the manga do you have?

Edit 2 - Figured it out, JBC is a Brazilian manga publisher. http://mangasjbc.com.br/the-ghost-in-the-shell/

u/slybear · 2 pointsr/Gundam

I have a [gundam backpack] thats shaped like the one used by the original gundam. Then there is the [Gundam: The Origin] series in hardback, and also the [Gundam Mechanics/World] books which give details about the mobile suits in a series or more info for world building but they're only available in Japanese.
There are a few [games on the PS4].

Beyond those I've seen gundam wallets, figurines, [cosplay/clothing] etc.

Might be an idea to have a look around some of the specialist retailers/importers/exporters like [1999.co.jp] , [hlj.com] and maybe hit up ebay and amazon with some very targeted keyword searches.

u/FirstLight3368 · 2 pointsr/steinsgate

Currently the manga is only available in Japanese, but a listing on Amazon for an English version appeared not too long ago. May be worth the wait if it turns out to be true.

I bought this set Battle Angel Alita Deluxe Complete Series Box Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/1632367114/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EKgrDbXGNHP9Y
Definitely worth it. Large pages, hardcover, and contains extra short stories. This is the original series the movie was based on. After this, there’s Battle Angel Alita Last Order and then Mars Chronicles. If you prefer reading on a tablet, they’re all available on Amazon in digital format that you can read using the Kindle or Comixoligy app.

u/jbronin · 10 pointsr/motorcycles

For me it was the book series Akira. I loved the future scifi story focused on a Japanese motorcycle gang (among other things). It has probably one of the most iconic fictional motorcycles ever (next to maybe the Tron Light Cycle).

u/thelonelygod · 2 pointsr/Gundam

You should get a copy of Mobile Suit Gundam The origin. It's a manga retelling of the original gundam.
It's awesome.

Mobile Suit Gundam (the original series)

One of the most underrated sci-fi series of all time. Below is the link to the novels that inspired the anime series. If you’re into novels.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Awakening, Escalation, Confrontation https://www.amazon.com/dp/1611720052/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_52hxCbFHTQW33

If you’re into manga or anime, HIGHLY recommend reading the origin series. It’s a more fleshed out version of the 1979 anime series. There’s 12 volumes I believe. Read the reviews for some perspective.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, Vol. 1- Activation https://www.amazon.com/dp/193565487X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_35hxCbD65GJPM

Gundam has so many series that it can seem overwhelming to approach. The manga above is a great way to get into the main series. Space-opera, compelling characters, the lines of good vs bad are blurred. It’s commentary that frighteningly mirrors our society written by people who grew up in the post-WWII/post-Atomic bomb drop in Japan era. The over arching theme is that despite the tragedy that is war, there is an inherent goodness that humans are capable of.

u/Jujarmazak · 1 pointr/Gunnm

Hardcover collection condenses the comics volumes from (9) to (5) volumes only if I'm not mistaken, the boxed collection even comes with a 6th book that has several side stories, it's a good buy if you can get it with low cost shipping because otherwise it would be really expensive (weights 15 pounds)--&gt;https://www.amazon.com/Battle-Angel-Alita-Deluxe-Complete/dp/1632367114

Either order the five deulxe volumes one by one (I'm doing that) or continue on the kindle version (then there are the Last Order omnibus collections which are quite huge because they condense a lot of material since Last Order is way longer than Alita's original run XD)

u/wesStyle · 1 pointr/nier

For those who don't know what this book is:

This is a novelization of the game with some additional content. It was originally released in August 2017 and has been partly fan-translated not long after.

The English translation is done by the unknown people of VIZ who probably just bought the license and isn't connected to Square Enix (which is not even mentioned on the store page).

Thus the quality of the translation/localization is very debatable and it is advised to take it with a grain of salt until someone who've read the original can comment on it.

The "Vol.1" in the title, as well as the title itself, are most likely a localization choice to promote the next book which comes out in 2019.

The book is available on Amazon.

Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/1632364611/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kr5QCb3H4GAV has all six volumes, plus an art book. Definitely worth the money IMO!

Maybe check out some of Humanoids offerings - everything they carry is quality, just need to find something you think your dad would be interested in.

It also depends on what variation of sci-fi.

(plugging a story I like/ignore everything past here if you want) If you ever get an opportunity to buy, borrow, download or simply "read online" the (always localized ._.) manga "Battle Angel Alita" (or "GUNNM") I don't think you'll regret it.

The original run was eight volumes and each volume is essentially a single arc with the eighth ending the story. (before the author rebooted/retconned in a sequel stating that "they made me end it a way that I didn't want to and far sooner than it should have.)

u/_qoaleth · 5 pointsr/anime

It's not only in manga form - they just published a massive 35th Anniversary Edition of it. It's certainly an impressive, though slightly flawed, box set.

Here's the ones I've either bought or want. They're all official:

Grimoire Nier (Japanese only). There's fan translations on the web of this: https://www.amazon.com/GRIMOIRE-Project-Gestalt-Replicant-Japanese/dp/4048686712/

Drakengard 3 art book and guide (Japanese only). https://www.amazon.com/dp/4048660861/

Nier Automata world guide volume 1 (English). I suppose there might be a volume 2 coming in the future: https://www.amazon.com/NieR-Automata-World-Guide-1/dp/150671031X/

And for the poorly-translated novels. Get only if you're not irritated by bad sentence structure, typos, and translation errors.

I've only watched the movie compilations of the original series and not the 43 episode run, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I'd really recommend the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga from Vertical as a way to experience that story. The only downside is they can be a bit pricey: https://smile.amazon.com/Mobile-Suit-Gundam-Origin-Activation/dp/193565487X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;qid=1527692379&amp;amp;sr=8-1&amp;amp;keywords=gundam+the+origin

From what I've read, the only versions that fit your description is the 35th Anniversary Boxset that Kodansha recently released. The individual paperback format they put out prior to this set is in L-R, as are the older Dark Horse editions.

Yes,it is complete, its original serialized run ran from 1982 to 1990. It was written and drawn by Katsuhiro Otomo, a one man army who would go on to also direct the film in 1988. The whole series is now collected into 6 massive volumes. You can find Vol 1. Here:

Y'a une trilogie de films résumés de deux heures chacun. Sinon y'a aussi un manga papier qui est vachement bien mais bon c'est un peu reuch, et y'a douze tomes, qui reprends l'histoire de l'anime originel.

I've just kept an eye on Amazon's prices, got 1 and 2 for $10 each a few months ago on random sale. The hardcovers from the box aren't sold individually, and the old HC never really go on sale that I know of, but I also haven't kept a close eye on those.

If you're talking about this box set, yes, that is all of the Ghost in the Shell manga written so far. I can't speak to the binding of the books, but it appears to be good quality.

Understand that this is the newer censored version of the original Ghost in the Shell that removes the controversial lesbian sex scene and edits the surrounding pages to ignore that it even happened. You have to buy the 2004 Dark Horse release to read the unedited version in English.

There are 6 volumes in total. Some other action/mystery series I recommend:

Monster by Naoki Urasawa

20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa

Death Note by Takeshi Obata

Uzumaki by Junji Ito

Doubt by Tonogai Yoshiki

Erased by Kei Sanbe

Parasyte by Hiroshi Iwaaki

Blade of the Immortal by Hiroaki Samura

I recommend starting with Uzumaki since it's just I volume. It has mystery, action and horror too.
