Throw up a triangular shade cloth and make a little nook for whatever and whoever? Do you have dogs? If so, you could give them a comfy little area that’s shades if they don’t have any real shade source. Or throw up a shade cloth and build a small pond! Or a shade cloth and a small private hot tub area, A huge fairy garden, a pizza oven pit or put up one of those kickass, super comfy swing or bench! Or frame and then pour a concrete pad and add a gate...that’s make for some good storage area....like for smaller playboat yaks or any yak that would fit. Can you take down any of the panels to the left and make it a few feet wider? If so, depending on where it’s located, a tiny tiki bar would be sweet with just a couple shade cloths for shelter/shade and just a cheaper roof than building an 1980’s style slanted roof out of wood. I guess I’d need to see the whole yard and where this little nook of opportunity is physically at and go from there....that and what kind of budget your working with.

+1 on the Costco Shade Sail advice. Shade canopies like those can reduce the heat in the area underneath the sail by 10 degrees or more. If you want a higher quality shade sail solution Tenshon Shade Sails are top notch and are super affordable when considering the quality. They are made to hold up better than the cheaper sails during bad weather and high winds.

That comes with three turnbuckles, mounting cleats, and caribeener clasps or however it's spelled. All top quality stuff. Just supply some sort of rope or wire.

At night it's mostly aesthetics and a mounting fixture for lights, makes it feel very cozy.

As far as lighting goes though, it really lights up the entire back yard and makes it all usable at night. Our grill will be relocated nearby with more furniture.

Longer term - going to build a woodworking shop (probably 15x25ft footprint) a little further out with a patio to turn this into a bigger contiguous hangout space.

I’ll say this, if you plant trees, plan for a lot more work and maintenance, and possible future damage to your system(roots messing up the plumbing, filter gets clogged faster, etc). I’d recommend something similar to this Pool shade sail
