Top Reddit comments about Ski & Snowboard Car Racks:

I thought about those but found a number of stories of them detaching. I'm cheap and cheerful, but the thought of 1 - 2k worth of skis flying off the back of my car is too risky for me.

EDIT: Also, the amazon reviews say it doesn't handle modern mid-fats well.

This Inno Rack can hold up to 4 boards, so 3 pairs of skis and 1 board shouldn't be a problem. Inno is always solid and have pretty good customer service should any problems arise.

There's always the magnetic rack option, something similar to: https://www.amazon.com/Inno-MV276-Magnetic-Snowboard-Carrier/dp/B000EGR418

I haven't used that particular brand or model before, posting mostly to illustrate the concept. I occasionally use a mag mount when there's not enough room in the car.. No complaints so far, but definitely make sure the mount has sufficient clearance for your ski width.

I used one of these a while back, they work good, as long as you keep you speed below 80 or so

I got this one of amazon that has worked well so far.

Inno Rack

The J rack and stacker bars helps angle the hull so that wind / aerodynamics don't apply so much force to lift the boat off your vehicle when traveling at high speeds. I've heard of racks failing due to this. It's a lot of torque. Plus the multiple points of contact tend to help secure the boat. If you want to go just on the roof, look for some inflatable temporary roof racks. Yakima makes one but you can find cheap ones on Amazon. Don't forget the bow and stern lines if you're driving on the highway.

5' wold work fine. Bring extra duct tape.

You could also buy this soft roof rack and carry them at 10'. I used this one to transport both a monkey hut and a yurt on a small sedan.

It's not a leash, it's a thule tie down strap fashioned into a leash

I have the standard cross bars rack, and a Thule ski rack that I take off when not in use, that way I can swap it with a bike rack in the summer time or use it for a SUP board.

I got the expensive locking rack and I think it was worth it just for piece of mind when I park my car on the way home. If I need to go shopping or grab something to eat, I know it at least takes tools (wire cutter or hack saw) to steal my board. It's probably just easier to steal the whole car. Also, the expensive racks have held up with 2 big boards at highway speeds.

How much space between the bars and the roof would you say there is? I have a inno surfboard locking rack and I want to make sure I can put it on with out scratching the hell out of the roof.
