If you're looking for just one coat to keep you warm through the winter, a 3-in-1 coat like this one would be best. This design lets you wear the zip-out liner or shell separately for milder days and then combine the 2 layers for when it's really cold (you'll still want to add some layers under the coat, though).

Personally, I have 3. A lightweight Marmot fleece lined soft-shell jacket similar to this, a London Fog wool car coat similar to this one, and a heavy down North Face parka like this one for those really cold days that are coming. I paid about $75 for each of them by shopping discount stores like Marshall's or finding good off-season sales (the North Face parka was originally $350, I got it at REI for $100 by buying it on clearance in August, then also applied a dividend to bring the price down even more). Wool and down are the best materials to look for, both insulate well.

Rainy day running errands in town.

Fit / color / style feed back welcome.

Jeans - Dyer and Jenkins Cassidy in Indigo. (One of my big purchases of 2016)

Boots - Some brand named Vikings I got from a shoe store that was going out of business.

T-shirt - Sharp shirter Shark punch. Yes I'm ashamed I own it so I hide the graphic print under the hoodie, but I love the color and the way it fits me perfectly.

Hoodie - From Old navy, got it years ago

Jacket - Got it from Amazon from a Chinese maker years ago. It's no longer available, but this is the closest one that's still up on amazon.

This "32 Degrees" brand jacket seems to get rebadged and sold just about everywhere under this and different names, for around the $30 USD mark. I imagine you could find one in the UK easily enough, or get one shipped someplace. Hit up Amazon UK and you'll probably find that someone is willing to sell one to you.

I bought one for about $20 right at the peak of the winter holiday season (i.e. when coats are most expensive) at a department store a couple of years ago. For the money it is fantastic, and I usually use it exactly as you describe: Either when lounging around camp or underneath something else when hiking. For its price and weight it is extremely warm. You can also pack it down to about the size of base... tennis ball when not in use.

The shell material is not particularly durable so I wouldn't wear it when you're hiking anywhere you'll get poked by lots of tree branches or where it might get scraped on rocks. It also doesn't block wind very well. The breeze wafts through both the material (slightly) and the zipper (extremely), so pairing it with a windbreaker is probably a good idea in very windy conditions. I use my rain jacket for that, usually.

Help finding a (hopefully) sub-$100 packable rain shell?

I live in SoCal, so warmth isn't usually a necessity, plus I can always add layers underneath. I'm traveling to New Zealand and Australia at the end of October, and want a packable waterproof shell to bring with. Hopefully under $100. I'm looking at the Marmot PreCip Men's Lightweight Waterproof Rain Jacket, Eddie Bauer MEN'S RAINFOIL PACKABLE JACKET, and Marmot Minimalist Men's Lightweight Waterproof Rain Jacket, Gore-TEX with Paclite Technology. Would love any other suggestions. Thank you!

I agree with most of this information, but for all of the people from warm climates that will see this, the winters are absolutely manageable, and the way this person wrote the winter segment almost seems like a joke. Suggesting a windbreaker over a thick winter jacket? Perhaps just bad wording, but bad advice. Over-the-ear headphones as protective winter gear? You've got to be kidding.

But yes, if you don't dress for the weather, it's gonna suck. Coming from someone who grew up in upper midwest winters and comfortably biked through the winter for all four years at the U, here's what I think you should get to be comfortable:

  • A solid over-ear winter hat
  • 1-2 beanie winter hats (should cover your ears, good for layering, and you'll lose one)
  • An absolutely reliable, wind-blocking scarf, cold weather mask, or other face covering
  • Waterproof/windproof winter jacket (hood recommended)
  • A nice mid-layer (like a sweatshirt or fleece)
  • Long underwear/base layers (under armour, thermal leggings, etc)
  • Skiing gloves (waterproof/windproof-- get two pairs because you'll lose one)
  • Liner gloves (could be the crappy $2 ones from Target, but it doesn't hurt to spend a bit more)
  • Wool socks (multiple pairs-- they're comfy and functional)
  • Waterproof snowboots

It's not hard to thrift for many of these items to get them cheap. Hit the thrift store before October to get your best selection-- heck, go this weekend!

Also, after being directly connected with more students than I can count from classes and extracurriculars, I didn't know anyone who preferred using the Gopher Way. I wouldn't count on using it unless you want to add 10-30 minutes through isolated tunnels to your commute. It's far easier to reliably bundle up and walk straight to wherever you're going, as long as you can navigate the often-plowed snow (wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility obstacles might be an exception).

I’m on the hunt for a new winter run jacket myself. Not seeing any solid leads here. I saw on Amazon a decent jacket but I want a front zip pocket for my phone, though this does look like a decent option.

Good luck!

This one from the same brand is named 'light weight', and listed at 50 grams?! Interested in seeing if that's true, otherwise the reviews seem to be pretty positive.

u/nefastii · 1 pointr/skiing

Cool, thanks for the information! Very useful! I found some Arctix jacket and pants on amazon sizing 5XL and they're not that expensive.

I'm thinking in paying for a half a day private lesson that way I won't be too embaressed with delaying others.

Cool, if you see some large guy wearing those jackets https://www.amazon.com/Arctix-Performance-Tundra-Jacket-Visibility/dp/B00V9XMMA8/ref=sr_1_14?s=outdoor-recreation&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1491441494&sr=1-14&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A6028619011&th=1&psc=1 just yell reddit :D

Best purchase: HH coastline Parka for $60. It was heavily discounted because I'm assuming people didn't want to wear red but I'm loving it so far and it was a nice bonus getting complimented on the jacket.

Worst purchase: Jack and Jones sweater, the collar is very loose and I'm having a hard time fitting it into my style.

u/LandAssault23 · 1 pointr/AskMen

Ok thanks, would you say this a decent (though cheaper-end) jacket?

And if so what color would you choose? Like what is easiest to match with?

I bought this down jacket for $40 and really love it for the quality and price. I think the brand 32degrees is really underrated. I love their shirts and underwear too.

Bought a microscope... didn't realize it was entire order, just one item so might try to add something via chat.
I have this Fjallraven jacket and really like it. Get a lot of compliments but not everyone's style, $140 size Medium, Moosejaw has it on sale for $200 right now.
Looks better in person, I'd look at google images. No hand pockets though.

Frogg Toggs Xtreme Lite Rain Jacket, Blue/Hi-Vis
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077H4SQMD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LLCvCbY7XVRZM

Have it. Love it.

It’s a little heavier than you’re looking for, but it’s super cheap and fully waterproof.

u/mt_sage · 1 pointr/Ultralight

You may not have heard that Frogg Toggs makes more than just the super cheap Tyvek jacket.

Their new Xtreme Light jacket is getting some excellent reviews.

u/defyg · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

That looks like some nonsensical Chinesium clothing.

I was looking for a rugged field coat-like jacket on Amazon previously. I think you can find better quality for a similar price. Check out these options I found: 1 2 3 4

https://www.amazon.com/Spyder-142012-025-Mens-Dolomite-Hoody/dp/B00LADEV42

looks like they have good reviews on amazon for below freezing weather. Not going to be the warmest Spyder jacket as its notably cheaper than the others, but seems like it gets the job done
