My daughter loves First Orchard. Basically it's roll a dice, put the colored fruit that you roll into a basket. Collect all 16 fruits before the bird gets your fruit. (rolling a bird causes the bird to progress forward)

My daughter is also just starting to pick up My First Animal Upon Animal although it's a bit much at this time. She can stack the animals, but it's not really a game for her, more like an activity.

We play the crap out of Go Away Monster which she loves, but it is sadly out of print. Basically the game consists of drawing pieces out of a bag. If you get the 4 pieces to the room (bed, lamp, picture, teddy bear) you win. It's great for taking turns. I contacted Gamewright about the likelihood of this coming back into print, and they said not a chance, so I did make my own copy using scans from a friend's copy, and my laminator.

We have Snail's Pace Race My daughter isn't quite at the point where she understands it. It's basically a roll and move for 6 different colored snails. It's good because the players don't win or lose, but the snails do. Another one of those activities not really games, I think it's just a touch out of her range.

My daughter also helps us when we play more adult boardgames. Which we feel is important so she can learn the rules of playing such games. Yes, it slows things down, but she has so much fun! She is the official caller anytime we play Rise of Augustus. She also helps fling Coconuts in Coconuts. Note, that game is technically out of print, and way over priced right now... There is a kickstarter going on for coconuts duo, but I'm not sure of the differences (I imagine it's 2 players instead of 4). She also plays Hearts of Attraction with us, although we pretty much use her hand to hit the magnets forward as she doesn't quite have the manual dexterity for it yet.

I loved these giant bricks so much at that age! Superfun for basic stacking as well as advance building.

Should probably wait a bit on this one, but Cootie is the best game ever for the preK & K crowd. Another classic game is Memory.

Have some construction paper, brown paper bags (I cut the bottoms off, then down one seam and use the backside as kraft paper), markers, and crayons. Even the 2 year old can rip paper up and stick it to contact paper to make fun collages! Bonus, no need for scissors!

And please don't forget books! Board might be best for the little girl, but if she's not an eater/tearer, then go ahead and get paper or hard backs. Rikki Tikki Tembo, a Seuss collection, Where's Spot, some Eric Carle, Carl, Richard Scarry, Jamberry, and some Little Golden Books ought to be a good start! Protip: Thrift shops have tons of books for kids in great condition.

Woohoo! Congrats!

  1. Buy this! Pogs need I say more?

  2. Do something! Happy hour drinks with friends (or if you're me by yourself) The one thing I miss most about having weekdays off is getting tanked on jumbo margaritas at 2:30 on a Tuesday afternoon. Its like being on vacation, but not really

  3. Pay off! Yeah do your adult thing... after happy hour with friends!

  4. Wildcard! Again Pogs

You know what adults really love at things like this? Shit they actually would use and not throw away. Like a cast iron pan, or a chef's knife (side note: I wouldn't buy that personally but it's the best looking one I can find for $25). I still have a blanket that I got from a White Elephant a few years ago. Doesn't match a thing in my house, but it's comfy and comes in handy all the time.

For the kids, and adults honestly, I'd recommend a nerf gun (expect to remember people getting shot with it the entire rest of the party), Jenga, or a mini helicopter.

Even if a kid gets stuck with a cast iron pan you know their parents are going to give them twenty bucks for it to make em happy.

u/billions_of_stars · 2 pointsr/boardgames

Sounds nice.

Perhaps this has already been mentioned but if gaming is at all still an interest have you tried other genres of games? Something like decrypto or codenames? Or are those too light / not your cup of tea?

Also, If you got the space I’ve had great success with Kuub and you actually get to move your body.

Apples to Apples, Dixit, Jungle Speed, Pictionary, Anomia, SET, Loaded Questions, and Jenga are a few that come to mind where the adults wouldn't necessarily have an advantage over the kids. Also Fluxx and We Didn't Playtest This are both hilarious card games that would be perfect for kids in that age range, but I have a blast playing them with other adults on a regular basis too; Spaceteam looks like another good one but I haven't personally played it. If you're looking for more involved strategy games, Ticket to Ride and Carcassone would be fine for that age, just require more of a learning curve. Cranium and Quelf are silly games that involve a variety of tasks (drawing, acting, singing, trivia, etc) and although they're supposedly aimed at adults, kids love them too (just skip cards that are too hard; or you could also consider the kids' versions of both games, Cranium Cadoo and Quelf Jr.). Uno (or Crazy Eights with a regular deck of cards) is always a classic, and you can always play charades or the category game!

edited to add: not sure about a good choose your own adventure story, but Mad Libs are always fun!

I would suggest getting ingredients for you both to cook and an easy favorite meal of ya'lls. Then watch a movie on Netflix or have rented something from Redbox. But make a rule, NO internets or devices during the night in. Only have them set to the side in case of emergencies or some such. While watching the movie sit close to one another, hold hands, cuddle.

If movie is not interesting have some board or card games set out that ya'll like to play. Jenga, is a fun 2 person game, or (don't have on WL, cause already own) Yahtzee is fun too.

Then ya'll could move it to the bedroom and really enjoy each other! Full body messages! Buy a few new toys for you and him maybe to spice the night up. NSFW.

Just enjoy each other and and have a great night! After 6 years with my wife I know we can get complacent but it's good to even just hold hands while watching tv on regular nights. Gotta keep the connection!

High School Spanish

  • Dry erase pockets. Absolutely my #1. I use a white sheet of paper in them to make it a mini white board, or you can slide in a worksheet and they can write on it and then erase it - fewer copies! We use these all the time to play games, practice verb conjugations and other grammar, etc. I have enough for everyone to get their own, or sometimes they work in partners or groups.
  • Cotton make-up remover rounds. These make great erasers for the mini whiteboards.
  • Organizer drawers. Great for however the heck you want to organize 100000 things.
  • Multi-color Jenga sets. You can make the different blocks represent different types of challenges - I like to use the 6 colors to match the 6 personal pronouns r 6 tenses of whatever. If you pull that color block, you have to make a sentence in the corresponding form for whatever we're practicing.
  • I put a supply box in the middle of each table (groups of 4) with pens, pencils, erasers, white=out, highlighters, paper clips, scissors, and glue. That way they don't have to ask me for things. Things don't disappear as often as you'd think - more often I find stuff the kids leave behind and throw it in.
  • Index cards. Great for millions of things.
  • Giant foam dice.
  • Essential oil diffuser. Kids are smelly.
  • Hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes. Kids are gross.
  • My first year, I had kids make final project posters explaining concepts (present tense, preterite/imperfect, ser/estar, etc.) as review. Now I can hang them up in the classroom. They're way more artistic than I am and it's a free source of classroom decor/resources.
  • Flyswatters - for the flyswatter game. (Look it up if you don't know it - this could be used in any subject!)
  • A variety of balls in different sizes - a beach ball (with the 6 pronouns on it), light-up balls, etc.
  • Play-Doh - can be used as sculpting pictionary and the kids love it.
  • Playing cards.
  • An electronic doorbell. This one gets weird looks from the kids, but it's great. You plug it in wherever, and if you need kids to STFU or stop what they're doing, rather than try to make yourself heard, you just hit the button and the tone goes off.
  • Anything that helps you color code. I had a different color folder for each section and I put all their work in there so I never had to spend time searching - I could tell at a glance.
  • Binder clips of all sizes.
  • An emergency kit - mine had bandaids, Advil, make-up remover wipes, a lint roller, contact solution, cough drops, floss, a toothbrush and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, etc. I avoided a lot of kids going to the nurse for band-aids and cough drops, and the rest was for me. I kept it all in a box behind my desk.
  • A clicker/pointer for my computer/projector.

I think that's it... I had other stuff for decoration but those are the functional things!
u/bunnylebowski1 · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I just added this today as part of a project I'm making for a friend. I need to write on each of the blocks.

If that doesn't work, a gift card is always appreciated, as I am trying to save for the biofeedback machine on my wish list!

Thank you for the contest! It's the weekend! Yayyyy!

u/xhaereticusx · 1 pointr/boardgames

We bought Stormy Seas for our 2.5 year old niece. She didn't get the rolling the dice part but she liked putting the pieces on the boat. Once they started falling off, she figured out it's easier to hide the pieces under the water than put them on the boat.

It's probably a pretty good game for 3-5 year olds.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/pics

Well, you could start by playing it yourself. Why does it have to "come back" for people to play and enjoy it? Or would you only play it if the cool kids starting playing it again?

Honestly I just think these are the the next best thing in desk decoration couture. SO adorable! So unique! They may not be the quirkiest thing out there, but at least they will keep you entertained throughout the day as you stack them on top of one another!

I have this for my video games:
http://www.amazon.com/LevelUp-Stealth-Silver-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B005YR0RSE
It isn't very big and you could probably put it on one of the shelves next to your tv. You might be able to find a smaller one than that. It will put all your games in one place instead of stacked in multiple locations while still making them easily accessible.

You have some stuff just laying on the floor and the stuff on shelves seem pretty random and just scattered. Organizing it in some way that makes sense for you two would help with making it seem less cluttered.

Cable management with zip ties and running as much as you can behind the furniture would help too.

You might be able to replace that bookcase with something like this.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-Large-Tall-Modular-Drawer-Set-of-3/15940592

Maybe even stack two if need be.

i've been playing a lot of this lately: https://www.amazon.com/IELLO-51283-Tem-Purr-A-Board-Game Pretty fun, easy to understand.

I always recommend Exploding Kittens, and then imploding kittens expansion is great. I bought it. My sister played once, said that's what she wanted to christmas. she's such a cheap date ;)

i've got a few more on a cat-game-specific list here but I can't recommend them wholly until I play them all http://a.co/bppVTjZ

So maybe not spades but definitely some idears!

KUBB! It's a lawn game that works well with two people. But if you live in a cold climate, I can see how this might not work.

While I generally have a rule against giving gifts that make sounds, maybe laser tag? If they love minions, there is a million minions things! Fart gun, Goggles, Bob. or just buy them the movie, it comes out on December 8th.

At that age, my son's favorites were the Spin Again and Magic Music Cube. They're still among his favorites at 21 months. He also started playing with cars like this one right around 1 year.

I also live in the minneapolis area and decided to just buy my own set from amazon for $50. I mathed it out and it will cost $25 if I purchased my hardwood at home depot. I don't have the proper tools and didn't want to worry about uneven cuts with a circular saw, so I decided to just buy a hardwood set from amazon.

This is the set I bought. Of course, building them yourself makes for a better gift.

Edit: okay now I'm trying to recreate how I possibly was able to build a hardwood set with only $25 and I can't figure out what I did. I had to have made a mistake somewhere...

Edit2: what the heck, a single 6 foot 4x4 (oak) is $56? Am I insane or is that ridiculously expensive? Apparently ipe is cheaper than oak, so maybe that's better to look into.

Edit3: Here is a 1x4 oak board home depot sells, so you could buy four 6 footers and glue them together. That would be $34. Then just buy the hardwood dowels. In the end it would probably put you around $50.

Man, it's not even financially worth building one yourself. You might be better off just buying the hardwood set I linked above (it's unfinished), and custom staining them.

It is real, it's a totally different setup because what works on a tetris screen doesn't necessarily work in a 3d jenga tower, sure it's a misnomer but Jesus relax it's just a game.

It's literally cheaper than a nice set of dice, if you want to just pick one up.

Even if you only get it on the table for Dread every once in awhile, having Jenga is sort of nice if you ever entertain groups of idle drunks like I do.

My 15 month old is obsessed with this and when a 2.5 year old visited he also loved it. No small parts so would be safe for baby too.

Based off of the five minutes of research I put into googling it, they were actually playing it the way it's supposed to be played. It seems like there wasn't much effort into actually developing or selling it though, seeing as how one of the top selling points on this amazon page is "Build a pirate ship."

My guess is that one of who I would guess would just be two unpaid interns who were told to design this game said, "Crap, we're supposed to make it two player, but if the first player knocks down the tower on his first turn then there's no way for the second player to win."

At this point the less bright intern turned to the other and said, "you're an idiot, they'll just go at the same time. Dumbass." Intern number one considered saying something, but decided that since he wasn't being paid, and because all the credit for the design was going to go to his boss anyway, he would just let it pass.
