What a wonderful idea for a contest.

I've had a rough time recently, some real ups and downs... but in order to keep this from sounding like a sob story I'll spare the details. If you're curious, I don't mind answering questions in PM's.

What I really need is my car fixed, but that's just something I'll have to take care of in order of priority. I don't have any friends here (in my town), but I am going over to meet a guy tonight that's going to help me build my forge. By all indications this could be my first local friend, and I'm excited for a couple reasons, one being having a friend, and two being FIRE!! FIREE!!! FI... uh... Blacksmithing!

Speaking of fire though, Blacksmithing carries a certain risk. Not only are you dealing with a coal (or gas) fire that can get upwards of (or higher than) 2000 degrees Fahrenheit (1093 C for those of you using that system.) but you are heating and handling that metal. I built a small soup-can gas forge and hammered a little bit on a railroad spike, but wasn't using proper tongs or PPE. I hit it, my pliers lost their grip and the hot spike flew up and hit me in the face just below my right eye. I got lucky it didn't hit my eye. Even though it only made momentary contact, it still burned and hurt for a week.

So, right now the items on my wishlist that would actively benefit my continued well-being would be the safety equipment on it. There's a heavy apron, a pair of welding gloves and a pair of decent safety goggles that would help protect me from flying super-heated metal.

Do you plan to use the micropur tabs in addition to the sawyer or are they a backup? Lots of livestock in the areas you mentioned so viruses will be an issue. Much cheaper alternative to micropur in the uk are these chlorine dioxide tabs

Do you think the gloves you have listed are going to be warm enough for winter?

Are the hiking shoes you have listed trail runners? You may want to consider mid height boots and gaiters for UK winter. Mesh shoes in UK winter conditions are really not ideal imo.

As for weight savings, the obvious stuff is:

-The Exos 58 may be too large for 2-3 night trips in UK winter. You could perhaps consider a smaller pack if you pack efficiently. e.g the Exos 38/48.

-Your cook kit could be lightened up significantly. Smaller pot like a toaks 550 and an alcohol stove/lighter gas stove could save you another 4.5oz/125g or more

-Your rain jacket is nice, but extremely heavy. You could save 16oz/450g here with a lighter one. You may be wearing it most of the time though since I don't see a wind shell on your list. If so, the weight may be less of a concern.

I wear an apron just for the pockets (this one, I'm pretty sure), because I'm spread out over three or four rooms in the basement and I kept finding myself having to go back and forth a lot to find a pencil or a ruler or a block plane. I don't find it does much to keep dust off of the clothes I wear underneath, and it collects sawdust in its own pockets at a genuinely impressive rate.

I would never wear it around a lathe, but if you keep the straps well-adjusted and out of the way, which isn't much work, I don't see it being much of a risk around anything else. Maybe if you're new to things and haven't quite figured out safe stances around everything yet, but even then, most spinning parts should be well enough enclosed. I've caught myself on a doorknob a few times, but that's about it.

It boggles my mind how much stuff people carry around all the time. I wear a stupid little tool apron, and get made fun of for wearing it, but my body thanks me for it.

Get a Spirit Gi from Amazon. I have 3, one of which has been going strong for 4 years. Literally no point in spending more for a gi when you're a beginner.

I'd use one of these. The pants are fine for running/ in the gym, but the very impractical for dancing
