  1. Sucks when you see people enter Walgreens and leave with like $500 in stuff. Sometimes you walk in to 2-3 Walgreens, and you leave with nothing. Stuff like that gets me riled up, but I've learned to just deal with it and move on cause I'll probably find something in the next store.
  2. I set KEEPA notifications on Amazon. That tells me when a price drops. Check it out at keepa.com
  3. I qualified for beauty and health and beauty so far. They required invoices, but I asked to use receipts. The person that helped me said that was fine. I'd ask to use receipts, don't just assume you're allowed to send them in.
  4. YOU KNOW, lately, I've gotten really, really good at sourcing, so I know exactly WHAT to buy when I go out. Some stuff I'm buying lately isn't even clearance or sale items. They're just discontinued or highly priced items. My business model is to go deep on an item.
  5. I use a separate room. I don't have any products for FBA right now that i'm sending out, but hope to spend at least 5k this weekend. As far as MF, I like to MF stuff that is small. So all of the MF stuff is actually in my closet. (Toothpaste, health and beauty products, etc.)
  6. Watch commercials, check the "Movers and Shakers" area, ask kids, find out what kids are playing with. Toys is easy and profitable. But I make more money moving aaway from TOys now.
  7. EVERYONE should have camelcamelcamel, the tracktor, keepa, amazon's movers and shakers bookmarked.

EDIT: KEEPA NOTIFICATIONS are so important. THey have helped me. Let me give you an example. THis product: http://www.amazon.com/Nickelodeon-Paw-Patrol-Ryders-Vehicle/dp/B00ITOAYOQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411664892&sr=8-2&keywords=paw+patrol

I made a lot of money off of. I first saw it in the Amazon "movers and shakers" page. HEre is the link to the price changes: http://i.imgur.com/8uR7lY6.png. It was being sold for $12 at Walmart! I went to 30 Walmarts in a weekend and picked them ALL up! There must have been about 7 products that were profitable for the PAW PATROL series. I managed to spend about 3k in 2 days and sold EVERYTHING in a week because the ranking was so good. You see how KEEPA is telling you that when AZ is in stock it's only $12.49? Well when it's OUT OF STOCK it was going for $25-30. Now imagine 7 items within the PAW PATROL series that are inflated that high? THAT ONE IS STILL GOING FOR DOUBLE THE MONEY, but they are almost impossible to find in stores now.

Holy shit, these paw patrol stoys are still inflated about after a month I sold them: http://www.amazon.com/Nickelodeon-Paw-Patrol-Rockys-Recycling/dp/B00ITOAYV4/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1411665164&sr=8-11&keywords=paw+patrol

    http://www.amazon.com/Nickelodeon-Paw-Patrol-Action-Badge/dp/B00ITOAUNQ/ref=pd_sim_t_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=03ZEZ9RN4GX8HSTCAHXP

JUST SET YOUR KEEPA ALERTS AND SNAB THEM WHENEVER AMAZON GETS THEM IN STOCK!

EDIT: Getting so many haters messaging me why I'm putting this public. I can do whatever I want. People have been profiting from these things for like 2 MONTHS now. They're still profitable. Deals are everywhere, my friends. This is just one deal of thousands that are out there.

I think the most Classic Christmasy basket would be the 12 days of Christmas! Obviously it wouldn't make sense to get 4 calling birds and 5 gold rings, but I do think it'd be really cute to continue with the ascending order theme!

Depending on the charity that you're giving it to, you can theme the items in the basket around that. So lets say if the charity was kids based, you might do something like-

I would honestly recommend going DCC, even on such a small layout. DCC can be easily continued if you expand or build a new larger layout. The based on experience with Lenz, Digitrax, and NCE I would recommend the NCE. I own Lenz personally, and I love it, but it's very expensive and overkill for a small layout. I can't stand Digitrax, I find it cumbersome and annoying. NCE is used by my club, and I've loved it since I joined. I still prefer my Lenz system at home, but NCE is very close to being as good. Not to mention you can get a started set very cheaply. I'm looking at the Power Cab set on Amazon right now for $155.57:
https://www.amazon.com/NCE-Corporation-5240025-Power-Starter/dp/B005M8GRKW

The nice thing is that the PowerCab starter set is very easily expanded by adding boosters, a separate command station, and more handhelds.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that most systems can be connected to a computer as well, for many purposes. This will allow you to use the very awesome JMRI ( http://jmri.org/ ) software to do a lot with any size layout. JMRI is free and open source. I'm a development contributor who uses it both at home and at the club

Additionally, one of the things that I love about Lenz is the open protocol, which means I can build my own equipment as described in the DCC and Lokmaus sections here:
http://usuaris.tinet.cat/fmco/home_en.htm

Good luck!

This is probably how I would spend the money, based on the provided curriculum:

1) Life Science - Ecology to Intro Cell Biology:

I would buy around 6 compound microscopes. They are not very expensive and I found a decent model for roughly $280.00 a piece (free S&H). With this, you can cover both ecology and cell biology. If you have prepared slides of plant cells, it would be nice to see those under the scope (xylem, phloem, root tip structure, stomata, etc.). If you have H&E stained slides of animal cells, it would be nice to see different phases of the cell cycle when going over something like mitosis.

2) Physical Sciences - Electricity and Newton's Laws

In my mind, this will probably not be too expensive to cover. For Newton's laws of motion, you can probably buy a bunch of hotwheels car tracks and do simple group experiments with those. I had something like this in mind (~ $15.00 a piece). With these and a bunch of sweet hot wheels cars, I think you can cover the three laws just fine. For electricity, I had
some simple kits in mind which would cover things like resistors, capacitors, power source and circuits but I don't know how much detail you would be going into in class. Nevertheless, on sciencekits.com, they have this, which is something like what I had in mind (~ $14.00).

3) Earth and Space Sciences:

For this, I would primarily want a nice sized globe (~ $550.00). With this, you can talk about continental drift, ocean currents, tilted axis on which the earth rotates, etc.

Some large maps of the world and the solar system would probably also be nice to have.

Earth Map (~ $15.00)

Solar System Map (~ $15.00)

For discussing geology, you can also look in to ordering a bunch of rock samples from here (~ $5.00 a piece)

4) Other Items:

If the class does not already have one, a nice projector would be great (~ $600.00). Hooked up to a computer, you can show videos and simulations of pretty much any topic you will discuss during the course. Maybe you can also get students to do mini-powerpoint presentations on whatever science topic - just to get them in the habit of doing presentations in front of their peers.

Also, if the class does not have one, a nice laptop would be great as well. You can hook it up to a projector and do whatever you want. From peering into the wonders of what Carl Sagan has to share on Youtube to whatever Jenna Jameson has to share on Xtube, it can all be done!

All in all, this should roughly come out to:

6 Microscopes: $1680.00

10 Hotwheels Car Tracks: $150.00

Hotwheels Cars: $10.00 (for a pack of a bajillion)

10 Science Kits (Electricity): $140.00

1 Globe: $550.00

Maps: $30.00

10 Rock Samples: $50.00

Misc. Items (Magnets, Timers, Crafts): $200.00

1 Projector: $600.00

1 Laptop: ~$1000.00

Total: $4410.00

p.s. i would spend the remainder on dry ice.

Oh, thanks a bunch!

I liked that solution because I can still use the slow cooker as a slow cooker. And the little controller lives inside it when not in use.

I bought one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-STC-1000-Microcomputer-Temperature-Controller/dp/B00EM2Q9VQ. (That's the 220 volt version you'd likely need.)

It's very easy to wire up. You essentially hook one of the wires from an old extension cord to the electric outlet. The other one goes into the controller, for the heating circuit. Then another wire goes from the heating circuit jumper to the outlet.

So what happens is that when the temp probe senses that the temp is half a degree less than what you set it at, it switches on the heater circuit. That completes the loop to the outlet, which energizes and then powers the slow cooker (this is why you want an analog model, one which is either on or off like a light bulb).

Once the probe senses the target temp has been reached, it shuts the heat circuit off. So basically it vacillates between 53 C and 52.5 C (or whatever temp). The ceramic or the slow cooker holds heat very well. And that towel you see on the side was originally "insulation" for the top. But it's not needed.

It's housed in a box that they use for external electrical things like flood lights. I just went to the home improvement place and fodn one that would fit the controller and wires. But I also like that it keeps the outlet fairly high, in case of spills and such.

I've left it running all night, on 72 hour cooks, etc. Perfectly safe.

Total cost, not including the cooker, was around $40. It took perhaps 45 minutes to build and test. The unit also has a cooling circuit, which does the reverse of the heating one, so it's perfectly suitable for use as a meat curing chamber, a beer cooler, etc. You can also use it as a yogurt maker.

It does get attention. I've built three of them so far, and have the parts to build a fourth for a friend.

The one downside is lack of water circulation. But I find with thinner things like steaks it's fine without it. An entire chicken or whatever might need one, though.

I've done steak, fish, pork chops, lamb, shrimp (makes awesome shrimp scampi, just put the butter and garlic right in the bag and then saute for 45 seconds when it's been cooked through in the water bath), scallops, eggs, asparagus, etc. It makes a fucking fantastic scallop, by the way. Exactly, precisely cooked interior, and then you just char the outer bits in a hot pan with a little clarified butter. Some folks use a torch for this even. Best scallops I've ever eaten, including some very expensive ones in restaurants.

Oh, and if you want beef short ribs, you seriously want to sous vide them. Holy balls do they come out superb.

I could gin up some diagrams for you, or do a search for "stc-1000 sous vide controller" and you'll find a bunch of stuff.

Honestly, most people's first builds are going to be bad, regardless of who they are.

Yes, it will be fairly challenging, Also, bear in mind that kit you're looking at doesn't include paint or glues, which you'd need to buy seperately at a hobby shop or online retailer. If you go to the company's website they'll probably have a copy of the instruction sheets where you can find color callouts.

Here are some reviews of the product and a build from someone on a forum, so you can gauge the complexity of the project and see if it meets your needs.

If you insist on buying that as a present, you should also acquire:
Ignore the prices. Online retailers or in shop stores may provide better prices, its just that searching on amazon is a lot faster.

  1. Liquid cement, such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-87038-Extra-Thin-Cement/dp/B000BMYWYC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-2&keywords=liquid+cement+tamiya
  2. A few sizes of golden talkon acrylic paintbrushes (because it's his first build and you want to minimize financial outlay, brushes are the way to go, along with easier to use paint). Those can be found at any art supply store for cheaper, but here's an example:
    http://www.dickblick.com/products/princeton-realvalue-golden-taklon-brush-sets/

You will also need paint, and a hobby knife, like an x-acto knife or a hobbyist scalpel. Depending on which side of the pond you're on:

  3. US: X-acto #11 knife and blades.
UK: Swann Morton #11 scalpel (they look kind of alike) and blades

  4. Paint: this is your friend's first build, you say. So you need good, brushable paint. The kind I use is this: MOdel Master Acrylic paint. My personal experience is that this paint is very forgiving and easy to use.

    http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tes/tes4736.htm?source=froogle&gclid=CN2AkOGNzsACFWoR7AoddGQASQ

  5. You will also need a can of spray primer, something like this, because the paint doesn't stick so well without it:
You spray this on the entire model before painting it with actual colors.

    http://www.amazon.com/TES2937-Gray-Primer-Spray-Testors/dp/B002ARGXU2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410058678&sr=8-2&keywords=testors+primer

***This presumes that you want your friend to have a shot at building something that looks quite presentable. It still takes skill to do this sort of thing, and it's hist first build, so it will generally look bad, but if he enjoys it, does it matter?

Alternatives if you think this is too complicated:

A paper model kit which builds into something 53 inches long:

    http://www.amazon.com/Build-Your-Own-Titanic-25/dp/3836530821/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410058750&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=paper+model+HMS+titanic

Or: this is supposedly a bit challenging, but it's the size of a trinket. You have to take a flat package of laser cut metal sheets and bend and shape it into a model.

    http://www.amazon.com/Fascinations-Metal-Earth-Marvels-Titanic/dp/B008LY4Y68/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410059956&sr=8-1-fkmr2&keywords=metal+HMS+titanic

TLDR: "yes, it's a challenge. Frankly, his first model will probably suck. Here are a bunch of tools you should consider purchasing to make his first build easier and look better. But it will still probably suck. Finally, here is a paper model he doesn't need to paint that makes a big model, costs less, and is more likely to give a better final result."

Also: you are a nice friend.

Preschool teacher here!

Expensive STEM stuff -- I've worked with all of them. If I had to get one, I'd probably do Osmo.

Bee bots

Dot and Dash

Cubetto

Osmo

---------

Other Manipulatives and Toys:

Reptangles - I found these at Savers and my students are super in to them right now.

Snap Circuits

Ikea Cars (not really stem but fun and high quality)

Mobilos -- can create cars but also so many other things

Marble runs of any style

"Pattern Play" Blocks -- We have these but I don't have the instructions, but kids still end up making fun designs out of them!

BIG Waffle Blocks

Architectural blocks sets -- for example

------

I have a major soft spot for board games (and related) at this age. Here are a few I love.

Animal Upon Animal

The Little Orchard

Count Your Chickens

Snug as a Bug in a Rug

Snail's Pace Race

Rivers, Roads, and Rails

-----

Ultimately, though, your focus should be on having fun! Your 3 year old does not need to be reading and writing or doing basic math. He should be learning to play cooperatively, self regulate, and be independent. I would focus on language skills and his ability to communicate effectively and understand directions. I teach Pre-K (currently 5 year olds about to go into Kindergarten) and I do not care at all whether they can write their names or do simple math.

Thanks so much! Just wanted to make sure. Also, your story is so beautiful, I teared up a bit! What a lovely family you have! <3

Kay (7) loves singing. She's believes she's a princess, & can sing to solve any problem. lol She sings Frozen songs at least a couple of times a week, since 2015! At this point, everyone in the house knows every word to every song. xD She really wants a karaoke machine.

Eugene (6) is recently getting into video games, particularly Minecraft. He's also loved cars since he was little(r). He has a bunch of little Hot Wheels that we got from the dollar store, & he'd be so excited to get a track for his cars.

Little Lizzie (4) is obsessed with Minnie Mouse. When we asked her what she wanted for Christmas, she said "Minnie." Then we asked if there was anything else she wanted. She said "Pink Minnie." lol She also loves to play with my old play food from when I was a kid. She would be thrilled with this Minnie Mouse play kitchen.

u/Yiroon · 3 pointsr/BRIO

I understand it's for his birthday, and you would prefer to give something new, rather than used. And I agree... for a first "set" starting out, buy it new. It's not cheap, but OK. When I look for BRIO in Europe, I try to stay, if possible, under EUR 1/piece. So a set with 50 BRIO pieces for €50 or less would be "OK". Because BRIO is BRIO, buying used is safe, the toys pretty much just don't break.

Then! as u/Woodenwordsmith says... you need track to make any decent layout. And one of the best starting packs, albeit super boring... is the 33772 50 Piece Track Pack. It's a bit boring maybe because it does not contain trains, or cars or a building... but fact is, you need track :) The price on amazon.ca is not even that bad.

The problem with sets is that they'll mostly be curves. At least 8 in every set because 8 curves make a circle... and the sets are always closed tracks. They'll come with maybe 2, or 3 at most, straight pieces. You'll be swimming in curves. The 50 Piece Track Pack Comes with 12 longer straights and 8 very welcome Mini Straights to make tracks "fit".

I don't know how much you want to spend of course but the 50 Piece Track Pack on amazon there is way way better value than CAD $30 for 13 pieces of track in 33394 Starter Track Pack.

u/AlchemyZero · 7 pointsr/Warhammer40k

This is solid tabletop quality paintjobs, the sort of army I most enjoy playing against. If you do the rest of the army to this quality, you'll be fine. Your photography sucks, but it's good enough that I can see you've got solid brush control, have done washes and highlights, have picked out sufficient detail, just solid work all around.

The only issue I have is the lack of basing. For miniatures like these, I'd really recommend doing a simple basing scheme like a ballast mix painted in earth tones. It's very plain, generic but doesn't distract and gives a miniature a finished look, and is very cheap for doing large armies. Here's an example.

You'll need:

  1. Mix equal parts of all three ballasts in a small container so that you have a wide dispersion of different sized grains. About one teaspoon of each type should be plenty for a unit of 10 troops. I usually use a plastic blister from a miniature, roughly 1.5" wide x 2" long x .5" deep, but you can also cut a plastic cup or aluminum can down to 3/4" high and that also works great. You don't want to use a really big container or all the fine ballast will quickly settle to the bottom and you want to be able to easily stir it back up to a mixed consistency.

  2. After you've fixed the model to the base but before you prime it, use a cheap brush to paint the surface of the base with white glue.

  3. Dip the miniature into the container so it's submerged in the ballast mix up to it's ankles. You can just kind of sweep the mini through the mix then shake it a little, and you'll end up with a nice mix of ballast glued to the surface. Wash out the brush throughly when you're done, but not in your water pot. Wash it under a tap.

  4. Let the glue dry, then make a mix of 1 part glue to 1 part water, so a very thinned glue and, using the same brush, go over all the ballast again. This will help seal it to the base.

  5. Prime the mini and paint it as usual.

  6. To paint the base is very simple. You really only need a dark brown and a light brown. Paint all of the ballast with the dark brown, then lightly drybrush it with the lighter brown. If you want to be a little fancier, pick up a set of the Reaper Soil Colors Triad, and paint the entire base Muddy Soil, then heavily drybrush with Basic Dirt, then lightly drybrush with Brown Sand.

  7. Paint the sides of the base with any basic Black.

You can add some Army Painter Tufts or the occasional piece of talus for larger bases to give them some variety.

It will really improve the model, and is much less work than trying to go back and base the model after you've painted it.

I have an almost 3 y/o. The amount of times she has touched my fleet is uncanny. I've had my fair share of "marker on laptop screen" situations too. Gotta love them but parenting is so challenging when they get ahold of things like that!

If it helps, I bought my daughter a few ships from the hotwheels sartship line that I tell her are "her spaceships", so when I play X-Wing she is allowed to "play with me". We also chase each other around the house with them which can be quite fun Best of luck to your fleet. You have my sympathies. #ParentOn

Yes. 6V across a 10 ohm resistor is 3.6 Watts, but due to the internal resistance of the battery itself this will probably be more like 2.5 Watts. If you use a resistor of sufficiently small wattage (.25 Watts, for instance) it will heat up rapidly and may catch fire within a few seconds. Many film resistors can catch fire. It should work with a 9V battery as well.

However, if you want more of a sure deal just use something designed to work the way you want, like a model rocket igniter. But you do not have to make your igniter actually catch fire, as long as it gets hot enough to ignite your firecracker fuse, or whatever. A loop of nichrome wire would be enough to do this.

Here is a bunch of small diverse spaceship models I found on Amazon. I've begun painting them as minis, but they remind me a lot of NMS designs.

110V version

220V verstion

Based on what I'm reading on the links above (I haven't used this product before) they are both rated for up to 10amps at 250V on the circuit they are controlling (your compressor or heater). The difference is the power supply for the controller itself.

If you are using this to control a 110V refrigeration compressor, heater, gas valve, etc, then get the 110V version because otherwise you would have to run a separate 220V circuit to the controller.

If you are using this to control a 220V electric heater (or anything else 220V) then you have a choice: use the 220V version, or run a 110V circuit to the controller, since there is probably a 110V circuit nearby. 220V is only used for large appliances (dryers, central AC systems, etc). Those circuits typically don't leave the basement.

If you don't want the teenage angst Hotwheels Model S there is a Matchbox version of the pre-facelift version. (I have the blue and red one ehehehehehehe)
