I mean if you don’t care THAT much about like “hmmmmph the Bass has to be strong and the treble needs to be just right and there needs to be a wholesome sound”
And are instead looking for an affordable way to play records and enjoy the aesthetics of owning and listening to records, I have this player and apparently (according to a friend) it’s not the BEST quality but I (not a connoisseur of music, but a musician myself that understands nice sound) I think it sounds fine enough to enjoy

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UMVW4VA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ydM3BbC13E43Z

Nice things:
It’s got a nice lil handle and comes with a power cable and built in speakers and can use those speakers to play audio from Bluetooth, the turntable, or an aux cord, has three speed settings, and automatically stops (if you don’t want to play the speakers loudly there’s always the headphone port as well)

Breakability:
As a side note if you do buy this one, be careful with the lever that you can use to lift the stick that holds the needle (pardon my terminology) because I actually broke mine pretty quickly (it’s not bad quality or anything, I was just an idiot and like latched the needle down on its stand (because it has a latch for the needle for travel purposes) and left the latch closed and then used too much force to try to push the lever that lifts it and now I can’t use the lever and I have to manually lift it when I want to take it off a record which I think is less safe for records but OH WELL

All in all this record player is acceptable quality for leisurely usage and I recommend it but with a little bit more care than I’ve put into mine; best of luck and anyone else that reads this can argue if they’d like, I think it’s a nice and one of the most affordable solutions for someone like me (or at least it was when I was shopping around for a player)

Alright, here's what I've put together for you:

  1. Turntable: Rega P1 ~$450

  2. Speakers: JBL LSR308 - $500

  3. Phono Preamp: Pyle-Pro PP444 - $10.49

  4. Passive Preamp (volume control): Schiit Sys - $49

  5. RCA-to-XLR cable (to connect speakers) 10' - $9.50

    Total: $1,018.99

    Logic:

    Turntable:

Rega turntables are some of the best in the world, and their quality extends all the way down the line. I have the step-up mode, the P3, and love it. $400 is roughly the entry point for a "good" turntable, which I think is a solid investment given your budget.

    Speakers

The JBL LSR series is very well regarded on r/audiophile. They are generally considered to be the best powered monitors on the market. Being powered means you don't have to buy a separate amplifier, saving money. If you want to save some money, you can drop down to the LSR305, which has a smaller woofer. It will not have as much bass power as the 308, but it costs $200 less for the pair (NOTE: The Amazon link is for a single speaker, not a pair)

    Phono Preamp

You'll need one of these, because the signal coming out of the tone arm on the turntable is very low voltage. The phono preamp brings it up to a level that is powerful enough to be amplified further by the speakers. You can spend more, but you don't need more than the Pyle (I have one at home that I'd honestly mail to you, but Amazon Prime is probably cheaper than the cost of shipping for me :P)

    Passive Preamp

This is a volume knob and a input switch. That's all. Volume knob because the speakers have the volume knob on the back, and have separate knobs per speaker. Didn't think you'd want to mess with that. Two inputs so you can hook up your turntable and your computer, or your phone, etc.

    RCA-to-XLR cable

Because the JBL monitors are targeted at pro recording studios, they use "balanced" XLR cables instead of traditional RCA. The reasons for doing so are irrelevant, but you will need an adapter cable.

    If that's too much money

As I said earlier, you could drop down to the JBL LSR305 (again, link is a single speaker, not a pair). That would bring the total down to $818.99. If you wanted to save money, this is where I would do it.

Another option is to switch turntables to the U-Turn Orbit. It starts at $179, but I'd definitely add the cue lever for $40. I wouldn't spend more on other options though, not worth the money. If you go this route, treat this turntable as your starter, then replace it later.

If you tell me your local craigslist, I can look around and see if there are any good deals, but the above is going to be pretty hard to beat.

By all means, feel free to ask me any and all questions. I love doing this kind of research for people, so it's no skin off my back. I want to make sure you enjoy Ride the Lightning in all it's rifftastic glory :D

Amp

NAD 3020 V2 ($399) has:

  • Phono pre-amp
  • Optical-in for your movies
  • Subwoofer out

    Turntable

U-Turn Audio ($309) have gotten good reviews from the few people I know that have picked one up. They look nice and do their job.

    Speakers

This is way trickier and way more personal, I personally have had very good luck with used gear from Swans, Canton, Mirage, Chario and JBL that I would have never been able to afford new and have been very happy with. The only speakers I've gotten brand new recently were the Elac B6 and I enjoyed them too.

Some options with the rest of your budget ~$500

Wharfedale Denton 80th (~$500) Absolutely beautiful, review well, I only had a brief listen in person so can't entirely vouch but I liked what I heard

Elac UB5 (~$400) Very nice bookshelf, the concentric set up for the mid range and tweeter is nice and slick and fits a 3 way design into a bookshelf footprint nicely.

Monitor Audio Bronze 2 (~$500) Again, lovely design, enjoyed them when I auditioned them but ended up going with some used Cantons that time.

Awesome!

Mine came in the mail yesterday, so I'm still playing around with them, but the HSU horns are absolutely fantastic. The crazy part to me is how low they get. When I first put them up, I thought my sub was on. It's crazy. They're also very cool because they don't have higher highs than normal, which is pretty common for horns. Even my Heresy IIIs have slightly tipped up highs. The HSUs however, aren't like that. They're flatter, but not the boring flat. They're still fun, dynamic, and punchy.

If you're looking for something a bit more dynamic and it a bit higher highs, klipsch RP bookshelves will do the trick.

For a turntable, u turn makes great stuff. Also, you can get one with a built in pre

A full receiver like this would give you the best sound quality and the most options.

Finally, you need a phono pre-amp. This one from Schiit should work great.

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about this topic.

Looking to buy my first turntable. I just bought the Under Pressure album by Logic on Amazon with intentions to put it on the wall (personal favorite album of all time), but started looking at more vinyls and decided I should probably get a turn table also.

After looking around, I do want to get a portable one with speakers built in, but have heard that speaker quality is going to be trash .etc. Honestly, the speaker quality does not have to be 10/10, as the speakers would only be used in a social listening situation (I Like the idea of being able to bring the turntable over to my friends houses and listen to some LP's). Most of the time I would be listening through Headphones.

I'm listening on a budget, $100 CAD (maybe a bit more if its really worth it). Things like this and this show up on Amazon.

Is it worth going with a portable setup? or should maybe buy some basic speakers and a turntable that doesn't have built in speakers? (I walk everywhere, so carrying an all-in-one unit would be much, much easier than one with separate speakers)

Also, should I make this into it's own thread or leave it here?

Thanks a lot for your help guys!

I am, among other things, a proficient audio engineer as well as well as an electronic technician, so I'm pretty well aware of the differences and limitations of analog and digital audio. Perceived issues with CD sound over analog reproduction from vinyl are pretty easily dismissible, but like religion and politics, facts and relevant information seldom play into the end argument. There are quite passable algorithms and other types of filters that have proven can simulate the "sound" of vinyl from a cd. They have been proven in double blind tests. Moreover, there is no "sound" or resolution for analog music reproduction. Its nothing more that a combination of the limits of the process creating a weighted spectrum that is familiar to some, and desirable to others. Another very amusing test was when one magazine did a double blind test with the same songs played on vinyl and cd. Participants were asked which they thought sounded better. Participants were screened into two groups, one group who expected the vinyl to sound better and one who expected cds to sound better. In both groups, the CD audio renditions were chosen by a majority of people, demonstrating that the predisposition to expect vinyl to sound better. On top of that, I'm literally talking about teenagers who buy 30-40$ records new, then record them to play on their I-Pod because their favorite band says their stuff sounds better on vinyl. If you cant see the hysterical and glaring technical flaws in this process, well then more power to you. I have over 400 albums still, and an old school Pioneer Elite table from the 70's with a Grado cart and needle, as well as a BO linear tracking table. I also know that both are limited by the technology inherent to them and neither sounds as good as a well recorded and mastered CD. Now, I will certainly say in the early days of CD they did a HORRIBLE job of mastering for the medium, and I have actually re-purchased most f my older CDs with remastered versions.

The price on these has gone down quite a bit since a year ago when my kid asked for one from Urban Outfitters.

http://www.amazon.com/Crosley-CR6019A-BR-Executive-Portable-Turntable/dp/B00COSGOLU/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1380903477&sr=1-7&keywords=crosley

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=15299514d&parentid=APARTMENT_MUSIC

Note that last one comes with a USB sound card built in, converting the analog audio to PCM inherently. This turntable literally makes your records into the identical PCM resolution of a CD. Because it sounds better.....

u/Graceful_cumartist · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Well second hand you can get something really cool, otherwise most likely something like this Pro-Ject, this pre-amp and if you can squeeze in extra 25 I definitely recommend these speakers. These speakers are usually way more and they are really good, giving you the ability to control audio trough them and also using headphones if you want to.

Now I started with a Pro-Ject and am bit biased on them. But I also think they have some real benefits over Regas basic models and the U turn. The Pro-Ject comes with Ortofons OM-10 that is a great cartridge in its own right and it can easily be upgraded with replacing the stylus with a higher quality one. They also have some adjustments available over the rega.

u/sharkamino · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Pro-ject Essential III, wow & flutter: 0.21%. Yamaha TT-S303 wow & flutter: 0.20%.

If you don't mind or won't notice 0.20% wow & flutter, the TEAC TN-300 is on sale for $175 at Amazon in WalnutMatte BlackGloss BlackNatural. Or the Teac TN-350-MB is $169 from BuyDig. The Monolith by Monoprice Turntable with Audio-Technica AT100E $199 adds auto stop. As with most all entry level belt drive turntables without a speed sensor, including the Essential and Yamaha, they may possibly need a speed adjustment after the belt breaks in or after a year or two of use.

For a very worthwhile step up in specs, never needs a speed adjustment, and is IMO the best bang for the buck new, the $299 Fluance RT82 adds an optical sensor speed controlled motor for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation specs than the Essential, Yamaha, TEAC and Monolith turntables as well as many other new turntables for under $500. It also adds auto stop. Skip the older RT81 that does not have the speed sensor.

Fluance RT82 wow & flutter: 0.07%.

Which brand and model is your current receiver? An AV receiver I assume?

The MARANTZ NR1509 5.2 Channel available for $299 factory refurbished with a one year Marantz warranty is a good choice if you need to go slim and 50 watts per channel is sufficient for your speakers, room size, and listening habits.

Marantz and Denon both have Audyssey MultEQ room correction which is often said to be the best in the industry.

If you don't need slim, these Denons have 75+ watts per channel:

  • DENON AVR-S740H 7.2 Channel $479.99 $229.00 has the same Audyssey MultEQ as the Marantz.
  • DENON AVR-X1500H 7.2 Channel $599.99 $299.00 upgrades to Audyssey MultEQ XT.
  • DENON AVR-X3500H 7.2-Channel $999.99 $549.99 upgrades to XT32 and includes a 3 year warranty.

What are your current speakers? 2 or more than 2 for movies and TV surround sound? What is your speaker budget and for how many speakers? Do you have a subwoofer too?

Yeah at that point you can get a Crosley C100. Crosley gets a lot of hate on here but the brand itself doesn't mean anything, they just rebadge (mostly) Chinese turntables. The company that people actually hate is Skywin, which makes those suitcase record players. Crosley sells a lot of those. But this is a Hanpin turntable, which are much better quality. Granted, this still isn't what I would consider a good turntable. But it's a significant step above an LP60. I would recommend a C100 to a beginner, I wouldn't recommend an LP60. If you go second hand you could get something five times better for half the price.

But in the under-$100 category, I just noticed this thing. It's only $80 and looks comparable to the C100. You'd definitely want to buy a new cartridge for it because the one on there is crap, but otherwise it looks superior to an LP60. While not good, I think it likely is acceptable. But used will be much better.

u/ReallyLegitAccount · 3 pointsr/vintageaudio

For $25 it could be worth it, but you'll probably want to look at it and/or ask for a demonstration first. Like /u/AmadeusK482 said, parts such as the headshell or cartridge make or break a deal, and if they're missing it could cost you a good amount for a replacement (an entry level cartridge like the AT95e costs ~$50 for example). Ultimately it probably is a step up from you're current TT, but before you pull the trigger shop around a little bit and make sure you know you're getting a clean and functional table.

On a side note, if you're concerned about the amount of wear you're putting on your records, you might want to consider investing in a tracking force gauge like this or this. This will let you see the amount of pressure the LP60, or any TT you upgrade to, puts on your records. As general rule of thumb a vertical tracking force of under 4g is considered healthy, but the ideal weight varies according to the specific cartridge.

u/blehispie · 2 pointsr/vinyl

I have this table and I love it. Works great, sounds great, and it's damn sexy looking. You can upgrade the cartridge later to have it sound even better but it's not necessary to do so. Very little setup as well. With the help of a video on youtube you can have it up and running in under 20mins after you pull it out of the box. If you want it for a bit cheaper you can get the black version.

Or as someone already mentioned, the Debut Carbon (which I believe is already out) should be similar price but a bit better. Better arm and better stock cartridge.

This is the one i bought. Ive hsd it for about 5 months now and i love it. I know next to nothing about turntables tho, but the sound quality is pretty good and its super easy to use :)

u/hikingmutherfucker · 4 pointsr/vinyl

Ok more money on speakers than source components is usually a general rule.

I just found this and freaked out then posted in another thread on amp versus preamp + amp versus receivers.

Unless you want surround sound or a radio tuner just get a good integrated amp used or otherwise. At your price point?

Cambridge Audio Topaz AM10 Premium Integrated Amplifier with Phono Stage for just $349 fuck that is a good deal.

http://www.amazon.com/Cambridge-Audio-Premium-Integrated-Amplifier/dp/B003VSFPGW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396975785&sr=8-1&keywords=cambridge+audio+integrated+amplifier

Orbit, Carbon or RP1???

The Pro-Ject deck is great. The Pro-Ject Debut iii last year's model is on sale at MusicDirect for exactly $299 as well. I have this turntable and find it to be excellent and balanced and built solid like a brick wall.
But I wonder with the finicky little anti-skate weight and the changing speed by removing the platter and moving the belt if always suggesting the entry level audiophile choice is the right recommendation to be making to new folks.

I think the MusicHall USB-1 and/or the Audio Technica ATLP120 are totally underrated in these parts, easier to setup and have built in phono preamps as well not that you need that with the Cambridge amp.

http://www.amazon.com/Music-Hall-Turntable-USB-output/dp/B004EDXCFE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396975985&sr=8-1&keywords=music+hall+usb-1

or

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT-LP120-USB-Direct-Drive-Professional-Turntable/dp/B002S1CJ2Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396976017&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+at+lp120

Those are both around $250. What you get is changing the speed with a button without having to move a belt around and easy to use pitch + anti skating controls, removable headshell for changing out cartridges easily and finally yes a cueing lever. They are not built quite as solid as the U-Turn or the famous Debut decks. But they are not cheapo and feel substantial if you ever spent time with them.

So that is $599 so far plenty of good money to buy a pair of decent speakers.

You can come in under budget and get a Stereophile magazine recommended pair of Klipsch Synergy B-20 bookshelf speakers for $179 on newegg here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780029

That is a good deal.

Or you can max out your budget and go for my favorite small speakers the Paradigm Atom Monitors:

http://www.designeraudiovideo.com/paradigm-monitor-series-7-atom-monitor.html?gclid=CM2D6PKt0b0CFTMV7AodOm8Arg

$199 each.

Or finally finally a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers at $349 a pair which I have recommended before and tend to get high praise:

http://www.musicdirect.com/p-15476-wharfedale-diamond-101-bookshelf-speaker-pr.aspx

That is my view on building a total under 1k system capable of playing lps.

You got options man but the Cambridge Audio Integrated amp is golden.

u/riley212 · 1 pointr/audiophile

Philharmonic affordable accuracy monitors $200, probably the best speakers for 300 or less. good bass too, you will probably be pretty happy without a sub for a while.

SMSL SMSL Q5 blackQ5 2x50W Amplifier DAC $135, this has a usb dac for your computer and RCA line level inputs for a phono preamp. 50 wpc wont be deafening but will power those bookshelfs well enough.

U turn orbit TT $300 this is really the cheapest TT i would recommend getting. it has a good needle and allows you to make the proper adjustments so you don't destroy your records. i would not bother with the Audio technica. if this is too much, spend that money on a better amp and dac separates.

Art DJPRE II $50 does what is is supposed to do.

Hello friends. I've been a vinyl collector and listener for about 2 years now, and I'm finally looking to move towards a more advanced set-up. Here's my current player: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K9ER5L8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

I haven't done an extraordinary amount of reserach, but I'm really interested in getting an Audio-Technica, specifically I've been looking at the LP3: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MRDMKG5/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I1BUH46KY8R8R5&colid=1EJXO93Y8SK8S.

I've also been looking at these speakers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016PATXSI/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I2BE3IGG8CFF7J&colid=1EJXO93Y8SK8S, because I really want to focus on a wood style with my whole set-up as much as possible.

Is it possible for these two pieces to work without any other parts? I would love to hear anything you guys know about these products or any other advice you have for a newby like myself. Ideally, I would put my budget at around $400-450, but if I needed a receiver, etc. I'd bump it to $600-650.

u/naoise151 · 1 pointr/vinyl

Hello! First time poster here and a complete newbie to vinyl. I'm looking to buy a somewhat cheap turntable and was looking for advice. I was looking at ATLP60 and additional speakers, U turn Orbit or this one off of amazon https://www.amazon.com/Victrola-Bluetooth-Turntable-Speakers-White/dp/B01G9CU1GK/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

But here are my questions:
Besides speakers what additional things do i need?
Is the bluetooth compatibility worth getting?(to be used with bluetooth speakers)
Are there better options for turntables i should look at? i read somewhere you should get something with a seperate phono pre-amp and integrated amplifier (whatever those are lol)

Here's a bit info on my use: I've been collecting some records for a while-some i i inherited from my grandpa but only a few because most of his got destroyed. I remember always listening to records at his house when i was growing up and i always loved them. After his death when i began traveling i owuld randomly find records that we would listen to , often times the covers had something written by the ex owners-little quotes or statements that all oddly enough reminded me of things that happened with my grandfather. I actually want to be able to listen to these records and play the music in the background as i cook, or hang out with freinds and family just like i did in the past. But because of the sentimental value i also dont want to ruin them with a cheap table (almost bought a crosley guys but i learned real quick)
i'm willing to buy used too but idk what i'm supposed to look for.

Basically its not something i'll be using all the time and listening too 24/7 but to be used whenever i feel nostalgic or if its a special occasion, etc. For that reason i want something that'll last me a while and still sound good and relatively cheap

u/JustAnEpicPerson · 1 pointr/vinyl

I just got a new vinyl player for my birthday from my friends, and it's ridiculously cheap and honestly not the best quality. Still, I'd like to know how much mileage I can get out of it because it's from my dearest friends. By this I mean, what's the best sound quality I can get out of it from a nice new speaker setup? Thanks.

u/2xlpizzas · 1 pointr/vinyl

Hey Guys, I'm trying to create a some-what cheap and MODERN set up for myself with multiple use (but limited channels in the receiver, so I found a receiver with Bluetooth option) and high convenience... Am I missing anything? Or is there anything I should add?

Cheap Bluetooth w/ Limited Channels Receiver

Turntable, and I really love this one.... Really Jacks Up Price

Speakers that come with wire, but adding a spool from amazon anyways...

Wire and Plugs

Do I need anything else? Hi-Fi amp or something? The turntable comes with a phono-preamp and the speakers look decent and are at my price range. Any tips on how to set this up as well? Including the best way to use the plugs or if I should get different plugs.

With the current prices of this post, the overall price is... $462.88 USD and W/O the turntable, it is $213.88 XD

Replacement Turntable that is affordable which puts the new price at $298.88

Vinyl enthusiasts of Reddit, I am a complete noob when it comes to vinyl and I need some help. I am looking at buying a vinyl record player for my soon-to-be wife as a wedding gift, but I have no idea what to look for. She has never had one, and she knows as little as I do about them, so I can't base my search off of her preferences.
I would consider her to be a very casual listener, so something really high quality with a lot of features would just be unnecessary. She really likes the briefcase players (I think that's what they're called like this one. I think something that includes speakers would be best for her, but I've also heard that it compromises audio quality (I have no idea if this is true). I'd like to keep it under $200, as we will both be just out of college and starting real jobs with no real savings yet. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

u/wake_the_dead · 0 pointsr/vinyl

This turntable is probably the cheapest thing you can get NEW that has all of the bells and whistles that most serious vinyl listeners would recommend. Anti skate, adjustable counterweight, pitch slider.

Pyle as a company is not known for making the best products, however it has a 1 year warranty which is more than enough time to: a) figure out if you even enjoy vinyl, and b) save up for a turntable upgrade.

With this amplifier and this phono preamp you still have 50 bucks or so for some speakers.

As I mentioned, Pyle is not known to be the best company and you will undoubtedly get more bang for your buck buying used gear. But if you're broke and just wanna listen to your records with a bare minimum "listen to your records half decent without damaging them" system shipped straight to your door, the Pyle stuff is your best bet.

u/MrBattleRabbit · 1 pointr/vinyl

I have an old record player(which is dead, sadly), which was an all-in-one with a large hardwood cabinet. I'd like to retrofit the old cabinet with a modern turntable, speakers and a tube amp.

I'm looking for a turntable which will fit right now, and I have a dimensional constraint- the turntable can only be 14" deep. It can be up to 26" wide, and as tall as you like, but the cabinet is only 14" deep(IE if you are looking straight down into the chamber, the turntable can be very wide along the x-axis, but we only have 14" to work with on the Y-axis).

What is a good, high quality turntable that is 14" deep or less?

There is plenty of space elsewhere in the cabinet for the amplifier, pre-amp(if necessary), and for good, modern speakers. The cubby for the most important component just has an annoying constraint, and one which is hard to search for. I'm looking now, and it seems that TEAC has a few models in that size range, but I have not heard great things about their products.

So, at 13.4 x 16", this will fit easily, for example.

Any help and recommendations will be appreciated!

As for a mat, a cork one would do well to prevent static.

Audio Technica makes this headshell for $25.

There's a lot of options for cartridge. This Audio Technica for $40 is highly recommended. The Shure M97xE at $70 is also a good cart. I own the Shure myself and I believe it sounds great, though I find its ability to track every record I've played so far without skipping to be more impressive.

Hey yall - Pretty new to vinyl (and reddit), was wondering if someone could answer some questions?
For reference, I have this turntable
I've seen 1byone on a "Do not buy" list here on /r/vinyl, which worries me. Greatly. With this in mind, hopefully my questions can be answered.

  1. Most importantly, is this a decent turntable? Again, I'm new to all of this, and I think it sounds okay, I just need to know if it'll eat through my records.

  2. How do I know if my tonearm is balanced/set up correctly? Again, I think it sounds fine, but I'm not an audiophile, and I also don't want it wearing out my records.

  3. What steps should I take to properly set up my turntable? It lacks any type of counterweight or anything similar.

  4. Finally, I have a limited edition blue vinyl of Radiohead's OKNOTOK - Given it's limited edition, I want to keep this in the best shape possible. How should I do that? I'm looking for little to no deterioration as I listen to it, so I'm willing to do almost anything other than not listen to it.

I appreciate the help, thanks in advance!

Well I was able to find out in the youtube comments. lol. Here's a link.

Honestly, I've been to Fry's and never really found one I like for the right price. This one actually looks pretty good; I'm really liking the form factor.

I know turntables like these are frown upon around these parts, but it's a good beginner turntable imo. The build in speakers are good, but don't expect Beats quality lol. I own one and enjoying every minute of it.

u/MKeirsbi · 3 pointsr/vinyl

You might want to look for a turntable with counterweight and decent anti-skating. Just by looks of it (because I don't know this TT), this one lacks the proper characteristics (as can be read in the sidebar). In the sidebar you can also find some great budget set-ups.

If you're not hung up on vintage gear, and you just want to plug and play without figuring out what cart to get and how to replace and align it, there are definitely some good budget models to start with. Audio Technica springs to mind. But even the "better" manufacturers offer good TT's for just a wee bit more than this Sony. You might want to check this Music Hall, if having a USB output is important to you.

u/GreasyGerbil · 2 pointsr/vinyl

Has anyone had a good experience purchasing the LP120 on amazon refurbished as seen from this link - Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct-Drive Professional Turntable (USB & Analog) Certified Refurbished https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GQKV6AU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0CsXzbGVGR3F0

I don't wanna drop $300 if I don't have to but it'll be my first TT and I don't want to put it off anymore I just need to buy one already, but if anyone has had a good or bad experience with the refurbished one linked here I would love to hear about it! Thanks :)

u/Eladar · 1 pointr/vinyl

Following some advice I got in here a while back, I held off for a while, but am now ready to start building a good beginner system. Currently, from reading reviews I'm looking at this set-up:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/PRO-JECT-13205-Essential-Turntable-Black/dp/B00DKSUHO8/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Acoustics-2020i-loudspeakers-bookshelf-Universal/dp/B006SYZEBW/ref=cm_rdp_product

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007Y3OBF6/ref=twister_B008UT5O6S?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

My questions really:

Is this everything I need to get started (minus things like speaker cables obviously)?

Will this all work together? I know they're 4/6ohm speakers and an 8ohm amp that can also put out 4.

This setup isn't set in stone, but it is definitely around the price I am looking to pay unless I am actually missing a necessary component. Other gear suggestions of a similar price could also be considered.

Thanks

u/moose_vs_mongoose · 3 pointsr/vinyl

I have enjoyed the project line in the past. I had a project essential before. It is a pretty TT and it is simple. It would however require you to buy a amplifier or a preamp. It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles like auto stop and start. I think its around 200 quid.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/PRO-JECT-13205-Pro-Ject-Essential-Turntable/dp/B00DKSUHO8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425330554&sr=8-1&keywords=project+turntable

Recently I bought a Denon DP-300F Fully Automatic Analog Turntable. It has a built in preamp if I wanted to use it and is fully automatic. I upgraded the needle to a Shure M97E and have fallen in love with it. In a way I enjoy it more then I did my Project turntable for ease of use.

http://www.amazon.com/Denon-DP-300F-Automatic-Analog-Turntable/dp/B000FMNBXG

Not sure if its for sale in the UK.

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with either. I do not have any experience owning a Audio Technica TT. Hope that helps.

Got the klipsch Pro ject bundle, started getting into vinyl after the endless vinyl was announced haha, got some tips from the vinyl subreddit. That's how my desk looks like, this way I can use the speakers for both the vinyl player and my pc https://i.imgur.com/MODO3kQ.jpg

It's this one. Nice enough I suppose, but OP, a good upgrade for dad (think Father's day) would be one with an adjustable weighted tonearm. I think a uturn orbit with Pluto preamp and some powered speakers would make a great gift for Dad!

u/badger28 · 3 pointsr/vinyl

I've already been told I need a phono preamp. Do I need anything else? A receiver, or another amplifier? A: You will need either a receiver or amp also.

This is the exact pre-amp and amp I bought and they work really good for starting out.

How can I tell what quality my needle is in/whether I need a new one? A: the quickest way is to set everything up and play a record you don't care about. If it plays good then you are set, if not then you will need a new cart probably, these typically come with a new needle.

Kind of along the same lines, how do I make sure the needle/tonearm is correctly balanced? A: look up the manufactor's tracking force for that cart. then use one of these to see what your tracking force is. You'll adjust the tracking force using your counter weight. Also your anti-skating force is typically the same as your tracking force, but check your manufactures specifications. This video will show you how to adjust your cart so it track right across the whole record.

If you need a new cart, either ask here after you get done testing the one on it, or google Sanyo TP 1010 cartridge replacements. I personally am a fan Shure carts and needles.

I hope this helps.

The RP1 is a fantastic table. I was going to recommend it, but at $445, it will eat up nearly his entire budget.

I must say though, it is certainly one clean looking table. I have no doubt you enjoy it. Congrats.

u/non_troppo · 4 pointsr/DaftPunk

To a degree, but people act like if you get anything less than a vintage Technics, you're going to listen to a record 3 times before it's completely unplayable. Even the AT-LP60 I linked to above will play a record thousands of times before the audio degrades significantly. The most important feature in any turntable is a replaceable cartridge...this turntable is $60 but it has a counterweight and you can easily swap out the cartridge for something affordable and great, and you could listen to a record forever.

u/Bandit6888 · 5 pointsr/ireland

Depends man, if ya just want to collect records recordstore.co.uk, tower records.

For turntables, for the love of god stay away from Crosley and any of the ones that look like little suitcases, 50's design etc, unless you're gonna play records rarely. They tend to damage the grooves on vinyl due to the needle heads being far to heavy.

Hello, I'm new to the vinyl world so any help you can provide would be appreciated.

I was recently gifted one of these Victrola turntables and I have a few questions:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UMVW4VA/ref=twister_B06Y1J4SJX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I know they aren't of the highest quality, but I was wondering if I could safely make due with this table while sourcing a higher quality setup without worrying about damaging my records. Is there any chance I'm doing permanent damage playing my family's old records on this Victrola table?

On a separate note, can anyone make needle replacement recommendations for a Philips 312 turntable?

Thanks!

u/Kevmaster007 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Here are a few well-rated options:

Teac TN 300 - $260+ (built in phono preamp)

U-turn Audio Orbit Basic - $180-$250 (you can choose to have an integrated phono preamp if you want, but you are going to need one if your receiver/ amp lacks one)

There are also some from Audio-Technica and Pro-Ject, and it's good to consider those options, too. Just do your research with whatever you choose before you buy. Good luck and give us an update with what you end up doing!

u/hurrayforzac · 1 pointr/vinyl

do you already have any kind of turntable? if not, i'd recommend doing this:

this turntable for $70.

this cartridge for $45.

this preamp for $80 converts to USB and seems pretty solid.

that comes to probably $250 including shipping (if you don't have amazon prime). you can spend any part of the remaining $100 on a better cartridge which will improve sound quality at every price increase. audiotechnic makes very solid low-end carts.

edit: or you could skip the USB preamp and spend the cash on another preamp and a new soundcard with a line-in and some cables (the cables don't need to be fancy).

u/hellomika · 1 pointr/vinyl

It's popular because of its price, but it's not one of the best. I just don't think it has a place in a list of good turntables. A counterweight is not optional if you don't want to ruin your records over time.

The Pyle, which I didn't know, seems to be the best of the worse here.

Edit: if you want to feature a kinda-almost-decent turntable under $100, this Numark should do.

This is the about the most that I'd like to spend on a combo, I was wondering if anyone has had any good/bad experience with these products in the past, and if you'd be willing to share. Opinions, reviews, etc. Anything anyone has to say will be taken in, thanks a lot in advance. I would also be looking at recommendations for a first time record player/turntable that is a good price.

My friend got one like this when he first started and then he bought a really nice one that's not mobile so I'll probably just buy his old one from him. Don't really know enough about them to know which ones are good or not

u/Seraya · 4 pointsr/vinyl

It's an okay turntable, but for that price range you should go with a Pro-Ject Debut or a Rega RP1.

ORRRR, for a lot less money, troll the Craigslists in the area. Look for anything that has solid, heavy construction, adjustable anti-skate and tracking force, stuff like that. You should pay between $100 and $200, and don't feel bad to ask somebody if you want to know if you're getting a good deal.

u/OJNeg · 5 pointsr/vinyl

Off the top of my head, I would recommend something along these lines:

  • Turntable: Pro-ject Debut III - Link Entry level hifi TT, you won't get upgrade fever any time soon. <$400
  • Amp: The only good options that are new would be an integrated amp from Marantz, Yamaha, or the likes. I'd recommend you search eBay and Craigslist, and you can find a great vintage receiver for under $300.
  • Speakers: Again, I think used is the way to go here. You could buy new but you'll pay more undoubtedly. I'd recommend you spend the rest of your cash on the loudspeakers, and then blow whatever you have left on LPs.

Earlier today I went out to BestBuy and bought my first turntable! I walked in there planning on buying the Audio-Technica LP120. But I ended up buying this.

I have heard that this one is a really great table also (if it's not better), and I got it for $50 less than the LP120. However, I do have to wait about 6 days until it comes to my local store because it is a special order (none of the stores in the surrounding 250 miles have it either). I'm excited to have it come in and for me to start using it!

u/gigglingbuffalo · 1 pointr/vinyl

Can anyone tell me whether its worth more to get one of these refurbished from KAB? (technics from the 80s) Or would it be better for me to go for a refurbished LP120? Its little enough more to where I would consider it if it had the features. I don't care about digitizing anything for the most part, I just want a turntable that can play in good quality without messing up records.

While it's good to have something to play my old vinyl on the sound isn't great. It's quite tinny with no bass at all. I really don't know anything about a decent set up or even if this has the ports on the back to make the it sound any better?

I don't have much money to spend on it but is there anything anyone could recommend buying to help add a little bass?

u/HonkeyKongVT · -1 pointsr/vinyl

The hardest price point to buy a new TT is in the $100 to $250 range. For $100, the best thing you can get is an AT-LP60 and the great redditors of r/vinyl will tell you not to get one, check the side bar, and buy vintage. That's good advice for budget spending; however, you could spend weeks searching craigslist or scouring pawn shops. My local craigslist tends to be lacking in selection and is overpriced. For $250, it's the AT-LP120 which is generally well received, but not very cheap.

Using Amazon, the Numark TTUSB or the Stanton T52B may be options that are a step up from the AT-LP60.

If you are strict on the $300 budget then the best route (for new gear) would be to probably get:

  • U-turn base model
  • Art DJ pre
  • and a pair of cheap powered speakers

You may be able to get a cheaper setup if you shop for vintage equipment on your local craigslist. At a minimum you'd need Table -> preamp -> speaker amp -> speakers or some variation of that(Powered speakers don't require an external amp and some tables have a preamp built in).

edit: If you want to get a table with a built in pre-amp I've seen a few people say good things about the Musichall usb1. Although it's not commonly recommended from this sub.
u/1_man_band · 3 pointsr/vinyl

Here's a headshell that will work, and a cartridge

You will need to download and alignment protractor from VinylEngine and maybe get and overhang gauge if you want overhang to be spot on.

I haven't used the Shure cartridge I linked too, but it's pretty well regarded.

u/_Funke_ · 1 pointr/vinyl

What would be the better upgrade from an LP60:

U-Turn Orbit with Art DJPRE II and an Ortofon OM5E or a certified refurbished ATLP120?

Also note that I am looking for a set up to (slowly) upgrade over time. I assume the Orbit would be better for that reason, but is the ATLP120 better regardless?

Do I measure the weight with anti skate on or off?

If you want to save some money and get familiar with your Mac, you can purchase a battery, trackpad, and toolkit. This are for a 13" macbook pro A1278, so your pricing may be different. This repair is extremely easy and a guide can be found on iFixit.

I want to get a record player for my girlfriend, but on the guide of recommended entry-level players there are no recommendations below 100 dollars and I really can't afford anything more than 60 dollars. I have been mostly looking at a Victrola like this. I have heard that the speakers aren't great, but I expected that from a all-in-one below 100 bucks. Is there anything better I could get for a comparable price? Does anyone have experience with this particular record player and is it worth buying?

u/nathanaccidentally · 1 pointr/gorillaz

Not sure if you're still looking, but I use the Jensen JTA-222. I've had it for almost 3 years now and aside from replacing the needle from general wear, it's held up really well.

The reason I bought it was because I knew it wouldn't ruin my records, always check the tracking force before buying a fixed weight arm.

It won't sound good with the built in speakers, so I'd recommend getting some nice speakers to go with your new player.

u/Scrooge_McFuck_ · 1 pointr/vinyl

So I bought an old turntable (Numark TT 1650) but the sound quality on new vinyls isn't great, it seems to get more sensitive about exterior noises like closing doors etc.

What can I do to fix this issue? I don't think it's an issue with the stand since it's in a built for cupboard and it only happens on new vinyl?

If that's just the build and I can't do anything, would this be a good replacement player: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-AT-LP60USB-AT-LP60-USB-Turntable/dp/B00EUSMFPQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1453246086&sr=1-1&keywords=AUDIO+TECHNICA+turntable

Like I said it works fine just not on my new pressings and if I get a new player it'd need to not have this issue also

u/Skitch_n_Sketch · 2 pointsr/audiophile

How important is wireless going to be for you? While I don't doubt that there's a product that'll work for you, I can't think of one at the moment and I'm certain it's not going to sound particularly good.

Also I was mostly confused about the bluetooth record player part, do you already have a vinyl collection? It doesn't seem to make sense to buy a record player only to use bluetooth.

Quick Edit: Take a look at these Klipsch perhaps? Speakers themselves look like they'll be below budget, but if you want it with the matched turntable it'll be over. As far as these lifestyle speakers go though, Klipsch is the only one I can currently think of that's worth buying.

u/explosivo563 · 1 pointr/vinyl

Check out the Pro-Ject Debut III too. The carbon is a bit more at $400.

Also check out craigslist or ebay. And that budget you could get a killer used model that should be ready to go. I had perfect luck finding a technics that I played right when I got it home. The P mount model tone arms doesn't need to be balanced so it was very straightforward.

I have a technics 1210 which they stopped making. I had got it used for like $350 on ebay about 5 years ago. These were the standard in dj turntables, but no longer in production. It is a tank.

These are all direct drive, so some people here may prefer belt driven if you are just listening to music. I do not know much about those type, but if you want to move the record while it is spinning you need a direct drive which is why they are popular for DJs. Supposedly Belt Driven are better for pure listening, but I can not confirm this statement.

I recommend you go with the iFixit 54 Driver Kit its $35 dollars on amazon and will open up almost every you will need in the electronic department, and I would go for something more like Ryobi HP44L for you electric screwdriver, the Flipout you had post does seem too comfortable to use if you plan to do a lot with it. The ryobi and a 68 piece driver set on amazon is only $54 between that kit and the iFixit kit (which is the kit that your Vastar kit is copying) you should be about to do anything for common stuff around your apartment to all the electronic work you could think of. iFixit Ryobi Driver Ryobi Set

I just posted my "Basic Tool Kit" but I don't think you really need all that for what you want to do, pick up these key item as you get extra money or as you can to up grade what you have, Channellock Pliers Set, Estwing Hammer, Wera Screw Set, Milwaukee Tape Measure, and Milwaukee Utilty Knife. With all of this I can't think of anything that could slow you down in an apartment setting.

EDIT: grammar and Format

u/checkerdamic · 4 pointsr/vinyl

Tables in your budget:

  • Audio Technica LP120 - You already have reservations about it, but it's an option.

  • U-Turn Orbit basic is $179 but the upgraded version with a decent built in preamp and a cue goes up to $289 and then more if you upgrade the stock cartridge or platter. The built in preamp is probably the best built in preamp of these models.

  • Denon DP-300F for $230 on sale (normally around 300). If you want an automatic table like your LP60, then this is your only option. Built in preamp but on the lower end.

  • Project Essential II for $280. Decent table but no built in preamp.

Some other options to look at: Music Hall 2.2, Fluance RT81, TEAC TN-300.
u/SelfAtlas · 1 pointr/makinghiphop

Yes, assuming you have a usb port that supports it on your computer, or alternatively, if you have an audio interface and a cable.

All you need is a turntable that either is usb, or if it isn't, any turntable and an interface with appropriate cables, FL Studio, and records.

Here's the cheap option that serves it's purpose well. I use it, and many others here do as well.

There's absolutely no need to buy a used record player. I burned myself buying a used one when I started. Anyhow. I'd spend most of that money on a turntable, so you have a good solid base to build upon in the future. A Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is juuuust within budget. Amazon It's quite a serious turntable actually. It has a carbon arm and a 2M Red cartridge, which itself can be easily upgraded to a 2M Blue in the future. Maybe you could find a good used Phono Box MM to go with that. I have one on my RPM 1 Carbon and I'm quite happy with it, despite usually being fairly reasonable. Having said that.. it's surprisingly expensive on Amazon in the UK, but they can be found on eBay. I'm afraid you just have to work with what you already got when it comes to speakers or headphones. Otherwise, a Essential may be a cheaper alternative. Amazon

Which PSU kit would you recommend instead? I can still return it and get a different one instead. As long as it isn't more expensive (or is only barely more expensive) As to the screw kit: http://www.amazon.com/iFixit-54-Bit-Driver-Kit/dp/B008KOTNVA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452799451&sr=8-1&keywords=ifixit+54-bit+driver+kit
I also bought a ground bracelet which only cost 4 dollars. Which I guess isn't worth mentioning at a price that cheap.
Finally: I bought something that will not effect the computer in any way other than make it more 'pimped out' with the color of the case. Here's what that is: http://www.amazon.com/Logisys-LDXRM12C-Adhesive-Flexible-Extendible/dp/B00H34FPZG it cost me 20 bucks.

I also failed to mention that the price I paid (after rebate) for all of this is actually $1140. $1200 is how much I paid at the store BEFORE rebate. And since the prices you mentioned were only slightly less than that (without factoring in the screw kit and lighting system which cost more than the difference) it seems to be I got a fair deal price-wise. You say I don't need this much RAM although I suppose I'll keep it anyway. I'm definitely open to switching my PSU though. Although again, it cannot be much more expensive than the one I already have, and if it's the same price (or less) that's all the better.

u/CephasPetraPeter · 3 pointsr/vinyl

Hi this may be a stupid question, but I've just bought a record player and I was wondering if there was a way to increase its volume output?

I've got the Audio-Technica AT-LP60 and my speakers are [Logitech Z623s]( Logitech 2.1 Speaker System Z623 )

The only way my vinyls play at a decent level is if I turn the volume up to max, but to get the same volume out of my TV, Xbox etc I only need it about 1/4 of the volume it's at.

Is there any way to change the volume/s or am I going to have to buy a whole new set of speakers?

this is the system I got. I wanted something that would be a good startup without shelling out too much money on something I wasn't sure about. Everything seemed aligned and working well, and as far as sound quality, I mainly found problems with clicking and distortions like that. I tested the bluetooth aspect of the system, and the speakers on their own work well, but then when playing phono with the record on the speakers it just doesn't sound up to that level. I looked closer at the record and it seemed to just have a lot of dust (the static was insane, attracting a lot of dust, not sure what to do about that) and some smudges/marks, I assume from the paper sleeve, which is what led me to ask about it.

It's just that the USB feature is more meant to be marketed on the same level as Crosleys. It's supposed to be a cool feature to make it sellable. So in the eyes of a consumer, it sounds like a good idea to be able to digitalize your collection for nostalgia/whatever.

The problem is that there's a lot of quality cutting as having a high quality built in preamp (basically what it is) is very hard to have at a low price point. There are USB turntables that aren't total crap, say the Pro-Ject Essential II Phono USB, but it certainly isn't worth a $100 increase from the list price of $300. So you end up with low end tables like this and this

u/roburoll · 1 pointr/vinyl

Rule of thumb is to find a turntable which at least has anti-skate, an adjustable counter weight and the ability to change the cartridge. With these features, your records will last much longer and sound better. The TT you chose has none of the features mentioned.

It is usually advised to search craigslist, thrift stores, consignment shops, pawn shops and even garage sales to find a good deal on a feature packed, vintage TT. If you're too lazy to do that I recommend this turntable. It has all the features you'd want in a turntable, though you might want to upgrade the cartridge.

I don't mean to come off as a dick but if you did the studying and reading you said you did, you wouldn't have gone with the AT-PL60. Whenever someone posts here asking about this TT it is shot down without fail.

  1. My turntable's power supply is making a constant buzzing sound whenever I plug it in, even if it isn't plugged in to the actual turntable. I have tried plugging it into several different outlets and the problem still persists. It isn't a very good turntable link so maybe that is part of the issue?

  2. One of my records (Jack White acoustic recordings) doesn't spin when I try playing it. One side spins, but the other only barely moves. It has some writing kind of etched in to it on the inner portion. I can't make out what most of it says, but one line says "but what next?". Could this be why it doesn't play correctly? I haven't had problems with any other records except this one. I bought it new and have never been able to play this side of the record.

Ok so he didn't have a headshell or cartridge, so it's up to me to buy them. Crap.

If you have a little more money check out the Music Hall turntables. They have adjustable weights and are generally better than the Audio Technica turntables. Here's one of the cheaper models: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004EDXCFE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1394466573&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

Check out /r/vinyl for more information. To be warned they can be a little pretentious.

Sorry again - I deleted my wall of text and took with it your next two questions.
That Shure looks okay to me. Not sure if it's worth the money, but cartridges aren't my strong point. That headshell should work just fine, too.

You've got to update us if/when you do it.

It's $400 for the Debut Carbon. The Debut III on Amazon is $325 while the Essential is listed at $329, so it's actually cheaper to get the higher quality turntable, hah.

Same type used by macs and iphones, this kit has a selection of them (and is a very nice kit).

EDIT - I think the macs use pentalobe, and these have six lobes, but that kit has the six lobes with the circle in the middle (I'm using it right now on an HP SFF).

Any opinions on the Music Hall usb-1 Record Turntable (https://www.amazon.com/Music-Hall-usb-1-Record-Turntable/dp/B004EDXCFE) as a secondary, cheap-but-not-too-cheap (office :)) turntable? It's not an audiophile environment, sound is output to semi-cheap PC speakers. I'm just looking for something with counterweight/not too much tracking force so that I don't damage my records (I wouldn't t want to play the Crossley/LP60 lottery).

To me it looks like the choices come down to the Music Hall player, the U-Turn Orbit Basic, and maybe the "House of Marley Natural Bamboo" (except that I kinda hate that design). Old 2nd-hand market players are probably out of consideration because I'm looking for a built-in preamp.

Music Hall is $50 cheaper than the Orbit Basic with preamp. Any opinions on not getting that one over the Orbit? The Orbit cartridge has a lower tracking force, but I don't think I'm worried about the AT-3600L on the Music Hall player. (I don't think I'd hear a difference between either cartridge on my office speakers.)

anything with a red cartridge like that is pretty bad

the reason people get a record player is for better sound quality, for that you need to go for something that isnt made for people who are not really into getting a collection.

check out this (its £100 here) if you wanna get anything less than that, its not worth it, the sound will be shit

What do the vets on this subreddit think of this table?

u/haeikou · 2 pointsr/audio

Maybe see if you can get your hands on this thing. It should be within your price range if used.

So, should I instead do this setup:

Pro-Ject Debut III

Shiite Magni

*Sennheiser HD598

u/tominabox1 · 2 pointsr/vinyl

if you have $300 to spend, don't get an LP60. Look at Pro-ject maybe

u/jakeandbakebeats · 1 pointr/makinghiphop

This one has worked wonders for me

Plugs right into a USB port and doesn't need an amplifier.

What's your budget? I asked a similar question last week about a Pioneer table I picked up. I got a lot of recommendations to check out Audio Technica cartridges. Check these out as appropriate for your budget:

AT95E
AT120ET
AT440MLE

I'm waiting until next month to go for the AT440MLE personally. I also plan on getting the AT Headshell which should work for you too.

Do you have the platter?

Belts are here: http://www.lpgear.com/category/P4.html

...and you'll need a new headshell in addition to a cart: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHS1-Universal-Headshell-AT-HS1/dp/B0048XFL18
