Sure. Almost anywhere that's not an apartment building. Pretty much any house has a curbside mailbox that anyone can open. Homes in denser suburbs might have something like this.
Not an absurd request? This appears to be the item on Amazon. The letter slot is 9.6" by 1.4". Anyone can fit their hand in that! Asking for a photo is ludicrous. A reasonable response from the rep should be that the product was never designed to keep hands out.
To be fair, op is just karma whoring, this mailbox isn't marketed in any way as "secure". It's just a regular mailbox that has a door in case you can't reach all the way to the bottom.

The dimensions of the slot are plainly stated as well.

Looks like you're right.
Here's the Amazon link.
edit: Nowhere does it say "security mailbox".
This. And also small, impractical mail boxes like this one.
http://www.amazon.com/Architectural-Mailboxes-2540RZ-Locking-Mailbox/dp/B00EUYJK3U/ref=zg_bs_2381465011_18
They may be "nice", but they're impractical. They have a tiny slot in the top or on the front, and a huge place that opens so the customer can get their mail. They are a pain for carriers. The slots are typically only large enough to get a few letter in at a time. Oh and magazines and large envelopes? Forget it. Get a decent mailbox. Preferably something large enough to fit a standard, folded over magazine.
Edit: accidently accidently doubled doubled a a word word.
Bro! You're legitimately right, bro, no 'security' mentioned anywhere. But being able to put your hand in through the slot makes the lock and key irrelevant AF. Bro.
I've seen one of these on a mailbox in my neighborhood. It flips up after the mailperson has opened and closed the box. This allows the person in the house to see if the mail has been delivered yet. Here's a link to one for sale on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/AVM-AVM-01-Automatic-Visual-Signal/dp/B0044V5RTU?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Honestly you sound like a jerk, op. I looked up the item and no where on the description does it say it's a "security mailbox"
Also on the features it tells you just how wide the opening is. Yeah it's a bad design but it's you're responsibility to figure out what it is you are buying and if it fits your needs.
The product
Grab a mailbox for $20 and stick on the front of the house with your address (or just "basement") labeled on it.
OP bought a locking mailbox.
Nowhere in the description does it state that it's a security mailbox or even mention the word "security" in the description.
in case you were wondering
Well This is the product. I wasted some minutes and found it. Doesn't say its a security mailbox anywhere on the page. Aaaand shows every moving part of the mailbox. This post is nowhere near funny and you just bought a item that doesn't fit your needs. IMHO
Except its not a security mailbox, OP is just a dumbass that wasn't paying attention to what he was buying. http://www.amazon.com/Giantex-Mount-Steel-Retrieval-Newspaper/dp/B00MXW9TCI
When buying a plunger, this is for sinks see how shallow the rubber suction cup is? Sink plunger. Or shower/bathtub plunger, if it's clogged. Not for toilets!
This is for toilets see how much different the cup part is? This is very important.
If tampon applicators are cardboard and say they are flushable, they aren't. Don't risk it. Just throw it away.
If you have a septic tank, make sure your toilet paper is septic safe.
There's a little shut off valve to your toilet Turn this off (turn it to to the right!) if it's overflowing and you don't have a plunger. This is so you can go get one from the store/another bathroom without flooding your bathroom floor with nasty things.
Close the lid to flush the toilet every single time. Store your toothbrushes behind the medicine cabinet mirror or in a drawer. It's nasty if you don't because anytime you flush the toilet with the lid up, you're getting everything inside the bowl everywhere, including your toothbrush, on yourself, and on every surface of the bathroom.
If you're a lady yourself, or you have lady visitors and dogs and want to make sure to keep them out of the trash/used sanitary supplies in the trash go and get a little metal mailbox and then attach it to the wall or somewhere near the toilet. Line it with paper lunch sacks, and keep it closed! Change out the paper lunch sack once a day if you know it's being used. maybe put a 'trash' sticker on it or something so people know what it's for.
Lastly, use something antibacterial (lysol spray or wipes or clorox wipes) on a regular basis on the toilet flusher thing if it's a lever, or the button if that's what your toilet has, and on the water faucet handles and the doorknob on a regular basis, especially after you've been sick!
What do you mean "shared" mailbox? Are you referring to cluster mailboxes?
If not, are you saying that your landlord has a single mailbox hanging on the side of the building for all units in the building?
If it's the latter, that seems really crappy. I'd try to contact the post office, but don't hold your breath because I'm still waiting on them to install a lock on our cluster mailbox. USPS is awful in Chicago. I've had packages not delivered, mail left on the sidewalk outside, mail left in the side alleyway. No amount of complaining has changed anything.
I get packages sent to my work to avoid any problems.
Regarding your mailbox, is this the kind you have? https://smile.amazon.com/Gibraltar-Mailboxes-Galvanized-Wall-Mount-THHB0001/dp/B00FQ5B17A Can you replace it with a locking wall mount mailbox? That won't stop them from putting crap like sand in it but it might take them a while to realize they need to get a funnel or to cut a corner of a ziploc.

This one comes in a bunch of colors, just search for "locking wall mount mailbox small" to find bunches, remove small to find more. https://smile.amazon.com/Architectural-Mailboxes-2594R-Locking-Mailbox/dp/B01MY48KFV
Obviously switch to a PO box to make sure you get your mail.
I would call USPS about mailbox tampering as that's as illegal as stealing the mail. They can be fined up to 250k and I think 3 years in jail for each offense. Take photos each time they do it and report it that day. Possibly leave it for the postal carrier to experience and make a note of.
To put it quite simply, you said that you had an incident at all - this means that at some point, your animals have been the problem. At that point alone, it is left to the carrier to decide whether or not to "risk" delivering any sort of notice that says your mail is no longer going to be delivered until you resolve the animal problem.
As carriers, we are told CONSTANTLY to not risk any animal attacks, and depending on your area you could be held liable and even charged with assault on a federal employee if your dog were to attack the postman.
I am not trying to "excuse" the carriers behavior if in fact he is "harassing" the animals, but if your animals are loose, it is well within his right not to deliver. If you have already spoken to your postmaster and been told that you need to make alternative arrangements in order to resume delivery, then do it. A mailbox like this costs less than $40 and I see them all the time on my route, a ticket from your local municipality plus paying for confinement fees should your animal attack a carrier is a lot more. Not to mention the cost of any medical treatment required by the carrier, and additional fees that may be incurred.
If I were you, I would go down to the office and pick up what mail is currently there, and ask to speak with the postmaster while you are there so you can schedule your appointment for him/her to come out and approve of where you're putting the box.
Just ask yourself what is worth more to you: the inconvenience of buying and putting up a locking mailbox on your fence, the recurring fees of paying for a PO box, or the potential to have your family pet put down because it attacked someone.
