🎓 Reddit experts on zinc mineral supplements
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where zinc mineral supplements are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
the only nutrient that is harder to get on vegan diet is b12 as far as I know. everything else will just require you to learn and change your habits a little bit.
as for other nutrients that are important to make sure you're getting, vegan or not:
I handle most of those just by taking b12 supplement in the morning, and sticking some flax, hemp, and pumpkin seeds as well as dulse flakes in my smoothie. Once it's a habit, you don't need to think about it anymore.
As far as any other concerns, it's just about making sure you're eating enough, as vegan foods are less calorie dense and so if you eat the amount you're used to eating, you won't be eating enough; and eating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables somewhat consistently. Adding a bunch of things like raspberries, frozen wild blueberries, spinach, kale, cilantro, etc to a smoothie in the morning also makes this easy.
Making fruit a big part of your life also makes things easy. Apples, bananas, avocados, dates, mangoes etc are great, easy snacks.
Make steamed potatoes or other veggies-- it is so damn easy! You just wash the potatoes, put some water in the bottom of the pot, steam for 15-30 mins (until a fork can go all the way through), and then toss with some herbs, olive or coconut oil, and sea salt, and you have a delicious filling dinner.
Do you mean your TSH was 80.56? Or T4 was 80.56?
TSH is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. It is released by the pituitary gland to tell the thyroid to release more thyroid hormones. If TSH is high, that is like your pituitary glad screaming at your unresponsive thyroid, so no surprise that your thyroid hormone levels were also low. That usually indicates that you need to increase your dose.
I have Hashi's and I take 146 ish mg of NatureThroid along with Hyperbiotics PRO-15 Advanced probiotics, B-complex with coenzymes, Iron, Magnesium, Omega 3-6-9, Selenium and D3-5000IU. I have tried to reduce the number of supplements I take but they all help. I sometimes take Zinc as well. I quit coffee and take caffeine pills instead and I am (not super strictly, but working on it) gluten and soy free.
The first time I took Nature Throid after switching from generic levothyroxine all of my symptoms were about 80% GONE. We increased my dose from 1/4 grain to the current 2+1/4 grain over the course of maybe 6 months.
What really fixed things for me was going gluten and soy free and adding magnesium and selenium. The selenium reduced my antibodies from nearly 500 to 100 in six months. That alone made a huge difference. And going gluten/soy free allowed me to lose 20 lbs in a month and then maintain it pretty easily just logging my calories.
Occasionally, due to poor planning, I eat regular bread or some pizza and I am sapped of energy and achy for a week afterwards. I'm working on getting into the habit of always having gluten free options on hand. But generally speaking, I feel better than I've felt my entire life.
I've never heard of having an immune response to desiccated thyroid. I've done very well on Nature Throid. You may want to get labs done every 6 weeks to check your levels and adjust your dose as needed.
Hi there Mr. Wiz! Any ROA will give you the “symptoms” after it’s built up enough in your system during your session. Last night I did more lines than I usually do. If my tweaker ass can remember to use my little fan, I don’t get that hot. Face is still oily after a certain point.
No clue, but I think the deal with smoking (at least for me), is I will just sit there and smoke and smoke and smoke and smoke. That’s where people get stuck with smoking. Plus it makes my high really raw and aggressive. Lines all day!!!
So yeah. Smoking will give you symptoms much faster because it is absorbed into your system much faster. It takes a 10+ hours for me to get to that spot with lines.
Best thing in the entire world for oily face is Dude Face Wipes - I’m super happy with mine. They have moisturizer in them and all the other crap. They smell amazing and are very handy in the summer in general. I would strongly encourage you to get them!!
Odor: Magnesium (specifically Citrate) and either Zinc or B vitamins. Magnesium will also give you the lovely benefit of substantially increasing the euphoria if you take the supplement every day. Below is what I order.
Amazon links: Magnesium Citrate $9.00 and/or Vitamin B Complex $7.49 and/or Zinc
Note: When Magnesium and Zinc are used together, it is supposed to increase the effect. And we should all be taking Vitamin B.
Hope all this helps!
In general, supplements are an expensive band-aid, and not a real long term solution.
The only things I supplement are:
Magnesium. Mag citrate works, but chelated magnesium is best since it doesn’t act as a laxative. Take 800mg a day until your anxiety goes away, then you can just use 200-400mg: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BD0RT0/
Zinc: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001VKDDM/
Iodine: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0771WPGVD
Otherwise I just save bones, make bone broth, always have the skin on chicken and slow cook organ meats like beef heart and chicken heart and giblets a longs with some carrots, celery and lots of spices. I use seasoned salt and lite-salt on baked meats for my sodium and potassium. As long as salt tastes good, you can continue having it. As long as it’s not hidden by sugar you’ll know when you’ve had enough. Sodium and magnesium are very safe, though potassium is the one you don’t want to overdo. “The salt fix” is an excellent book on how necessary it is to health and how it doesn’t cause cardiovascular disease. For slow cooking, it’s best to add salt “to taste” at the end or when served to prevent accidentally adding a awful tasting amount.
I started keto because of depression and anxiety, and successfully resolved both those issues (as well as other things like putting my blood pressure from “almost to high” to “normal”). Magnesium should dampen the anxiety within a day or three.
Those are the essentials in my opinion.
Ok...Here we go! This is a very relevant topic to me so get ready for a long reply ha!
I have cystic acne that only came up after going off of birth control a year ago. I've tried SO MANY things, but nothing worked! It wasn't until we started TTC when I was taking more vitamins that it finally got better, but it was still not great.
I found a routine that keeps it in check though and it involves Manuka Oil! My skin is in the best shape it has ever been! So here is what I found that works for me:
AM: I wash my face with Era Organics Natural Face Wash. About 3x per week I use their scrub. Then mix a little bit of Manuka Oil with CeraVe AM Moisturizer then apply Bare Minerals powder concealer.
PM: I remove my make up as soon as I get home from work with Micellar Cleansing Water and wash with the Era Organics face wash. Then I put a little bit of organic sweet almond oil along with the manuka oil on a cotton round and apply that to my face to moisturize. Sometimes I'll swap out the almond oil for CeraVe PM moisturizer, but the almond oil seems to help a little better.
Along with this routine, I take 30 mg of zinc and the recommended dose of vegan DHA every day, 5000 IU of vitamin D M-F, along with my prenatal. But I swear by the zinc. Here is a little information on why zinc helps with acne.
As for my chest and back (I get pimples there too but not cystic) I've been putting witch hazel and manuka oil on a cotton round every morning/evening and it has really helped clear it up! Granted I just started this routine a week ago so I hope it continues!!!
For someone who has struggled with this to the point of tears, I finally feel like I have it under control!!
It sounds like you need more than just Vitamin D.
Without much context, you also sound anemic.
A full blood panel would be recommended. In the meantime I would take the following:
Take every morning/early afternoon (with a meal):
Take every evening (with a meal):
Learn more about why those supplements will likely improve your health.
Increase your calories and eat some meat, if you aren't already. Grass fed beef and organ meats are best in your case.
If your parents don't want to buy these supplements for you, head down to a CVS and buy them yourself. Ultimately your health is your responsibility, not the responsibility of your parents or your doctor. You made a great first step by reaching out on Reddit. Build on that momentum :)
If you'd like to talk about it more feel free to PM me. I hope you get better OP!
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I'm familiar with Wisconsin. I know of this free clinic but its in Madison if you can make it. The hours might not be the best. Otherwise, Here's a quick list of free clinics in your town that I pulled up.
So, badgercare is basically medicaid which pays for people that don't earn or don't have insurance. One thing you can do is call badgercare. I was able to speak to them before and they seem to be pretty helpful to people that have special circumstances. Try explaining to them about your situation. Don't give up.
If you want to do your own unna boot you can try this:
zinc infused bandage
Kerlix
Coban wrap
foam pad or extra bandage
Watch this video on how to do it
Now a little caveat emptor....
If you do this you could end up with shortness of breath because of build up of fluid in your lungs because now the fluid being trapped in your legs is being pushed back up to your lungs. You need to go to the ED if you get any of these symptoms. Good luck and I hope you find the help you need.
Zinc Orotate - this is an aromatase inhibitor, which prevents the production of estrogen ( http://amzn.com/B004UAPG46 )
Ultimate Ascorbate C - not sure of the benefits of this particular one, but it's more than just vitamin C ( http://amzn.com/B00016AOZE )
Vitamin E - "use this if you're gonna have a lot of fat oxidizing in your blood" - Charls ( http://amzn.com/B0014H1P5C )
Fish Oil - gotta have this if you wanna shoot big loads. i mean, come on ( http://amzn.com/B002CQU564 )
Source Naturals Men's Multivitamin - this is the best multivitamin on the market in my opinion. i'm so happy charls introduced it to me. most vitamins aren't bioavailable for shit, so you aren't actually absorbing most of the stuff you're ingesting. however, this formula is crafted to be the most bioavailable multivitamin ever. good shit. if you don't get any of the other stuff, GET THIS. ( http://amzn.com/B001B4N87G )
Activated Charcoal - This helps whiten your teeth. Explains why Charls has such good teeth. ( http://amzn.com/B00016WU2E )
Charls introduced all of these in the Fallout 4 stream. He didn't go into much detail as to when he takes them. Although, he did say that he takes 2 fish oil gels a day. Just look some of this stuff up and see what works for you. Source Naturals Multi (3x a day) and Fish Oil (2x a day) is what works for me.
A general advice that I give to everyone with thyroid problems is to eat supplements since it can be a big part of how well your medicine is working. I tried like a million different things, diets and dosages before I found out what worked. If your body doesn't have enough building components, it doesn't matter how much t4 you put inside your body and it will have a minimal effect. Imagine that you fill a car with fuel but don't check any other issues along the way to the motor when it's not running properly. Maybe the fuel pump doesn't have electricity so only a small amount gets to the engine or a valve is not opening enough. In my eyes it seems pretty stupid not to check those things to when it's not working even though it should.
I'm guessing that you had less Synthroid when your TSH was 2.5, correct? 150mg seems like quite a lot. I tried it once and my TSH was 0 (68kg, male). I personally don't know if only Synthroid/t4 would have worked for me but I'm currently on a combination with t3 & t4. There is also NDT but I don't know it would make a difference. What did it for me was supplements (I think so at least but so far I'm feeling better). I thought that I had tried the important ones but what I was missing was zinc (and maybe selenium. Previously I only tried a B-vitamin complex and magnesium). Normally if you have a diverse diet with crops from mineral rich soil it wouldn't be a problem but that is pretty rare these days. It's important not to take to much zinc and selenium since you can overdose it (you can not overdose Vitamin B). From my comment on another thread: A cheap and easy method for checking if you have a deficiency is to buy liquid zinc (like this one). If you don't feel any taste or a weak metallic taste (that develops after ~10-15 seconds), you have a deficiency. If it tastes like crap or makes you want to throw up, you don't. Otherwise you shouldn't exceed the RDI for a longer period of time.
I've had good luck with NOW Foods Super Enzymes. I also like their papain.
These are just what benefited me, obviously YMMV. :)
Ah, it contains Magnesium oxide. That one has a poor absorption rate and a laxative effect. It contains a lot of magnesium by weight, but has a bioavailability of only 4% (that's all you would absorb)
Also, Magnesium Threonate in comparison to others was created to cross the blood-brain barrier – it may, therefore, improve learning and memory functions and maybe be especially beneficial for age-related cognitive decline. The suggested dose is 2,000 mg of magnesium threonate (this could help with the mental fog)

That supplement too has Zinc Oxide,
When it comes to your thyroid hormones, zinc plays a major role in thyroid hormone metabolism. Specifically, zinc is needed in the conversion of T4 to T3.
Zinc also helps your thyroid hormone receptors in your hypothalamus function properly, so it can accurately gauge whether or not you have sufficient thyroid hormone levels. Because of this, zinc deficiency can cause your body to decrease its thyroid hormone production when it thinks it has sufficient levels. Low zinc levels are thought to be one potential factor that can contribute to hypothyroidism.

Zinc picolinate is what I take too sometimes, and it has a better absorbency rate than zinc oxide.
You could potentially do better taking the minerals and vitamins separately and at different times.
Have you felt any difference in mind and body since you started taking that supplement? Usually thyroid changes are noticeable around 3 to 8 weeks.
ABSOLUTELY. Look up a multivitamin called Vita Jym. Made by Jim stoppani.
https://www.bodybuilding.com/store/jym/vita-jym.html
I swear by it.
He also has a ZMA supplement which id recommend with dinner.
https://www.bodybuilding.com/store/jym/zma-jym.html
Not sure how the magnesium will react to you so otherwise you can just take zinc in picolinate form. The one i take is by Solgar and is 22mg.
Just make SURE you also take a zinc supplement especially if youre an athlete.

How much vitamin d do you take ?
I genetically make little to no vitamin d so i take anywhere from 5 to 10,000 ius depending on the season.
He also provides research why he adds and excludes certain vitamins in his product. Just don't drink milk with it.
Any questions please feel free to ask.
Just realized are you female or male?
Thanks again, this is all very helpful. I was thinking i might have to go ACS, and Reagent grade since Spirulina absorbs heavy metals apparently.
I was kinda torn between getting cheaper ingredients now for fish use and upgrading later for selling quality, but now I think I'm defiantly looking to be able to sell (Spirulina and Zarrouk). So I'll be looking into the ratings. However, resources like your link will be useful for cheaper options for fish food. Tbh I'll probably experiment more with common garden fertilizers and such for this purpose.
Also, I'ts kinda awkward to be searching for "food grade" Boric Acid. So far even Quality ACS Boric Acid warns not for Food use.

For others looking, so far the items I've found and am considering purchasing are as follows:
Dipotassium hydrogen phosphate
Sodium nitrate
Potassium Sulfate
Calcium Chloride
ethylene diamino tetracetic acid

I'll try to make a complete edited list after some more research.
Thanks for the reply.
I guess even then you have to trust the label when they say "3rd party tested" because there isn't a place to go look this stuff up from what I know.
I found this berberine on amazon that claims to be 3rd party tested, maybe its legit

You have to make sure the vitamin B you’re using is P-5-P. I use this and it’s a huge game changer. Other HG mamas give it good reviews too. Designs for Health Vitamin B6 Liquid - 50 Milligrams P-5-P with Magnesium + Zinc (24 Servings, 4 Fluid Ounces) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ML918O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_mn0zDb1N7F2QR
If you can, try this product: 365 Everyday Value, Chelated Zinc, 60 ct https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074H5BV39/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_cQ85Cb50SWPQM
My friend takes 30mg of zinc and needs to eat a large portion of carbs to offset the side effects. Maybe that can help in the interim?
You would need to do some research. I weigh more than you and am older but this might be a good place to start. Read some reviews... of course some may not be real but it worked for me.
I took Accutane many years before and it didn’t work and just dried out my skin and seriously harmed my mucous membranes. Zinc is like giving your immune system extra ammo. Helped keep me from getting as many colds, too.

I'm not sure if this fits your requirements, but someone in this sub suggested a zinc supplement. It's awesome! I have had WAY LESS cystic acne/chin break outs since I started taking it about a month ago. Here's the suggested one.
I agree with others that you should track first (chronometer.com) to see if you need the supplement.
Zinc should be balanced with copper. Look for 10-15mg zinc for every 1mg copper.
Jarrow Formulas Zinc Balance 15 mg, Supports Immune and Antioxidant Protection, 100 Caps https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001VKDDM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bOtFDbACZNTVT
I take Now Nutrition Optizinc 30mg and also copper. For under 6 bucks I consider that pretty good. Jarrow also has it with a different zinc:copper ratio and one pill only has 15mg Zinc and is $9.50. So just depends on what suits your budget/needs.

I use Zinc sulfate topical cream and it is AWESOME

You can buy zinc supplements (which sometimes come with selenium included) at a drugstore or online without prescription. I'm not familiar with what's available in the US recently, but I used to take these, which happen to be 15 mg zinc with 60 μg chromium and 50 μg selenium. One daily for normal function; two for increased.
You'll have to figure out what works for yourself though. I wouldn't expect you to take the word of an internet stranger at face value.
I do realize the fish oil dosage is low, but honestly it's too much effort to carry around those giant capsules to take with every meal so I usually just take one at night after dinner. But if that could possibly help I guess I could find a way to work it in to my routine.
As for zinc, I've been using this which includes copper in it for reasons beyond my knowledge, but I don't think it noticeably cancels out the effects of the zinc:
Source Naturals Optizinc Zinc Monomethionine 30mg, 120 Tablets
http://amzn.com/B00020I7Q2
I use Source Naturals Optizinc Zinc Monomethionine 30mg (with Copper), 120 Tablets and Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium (200 Mg Elemental), 240-Count, which uses the glycinate/lysinate chelate.
Zinc orotate is very inexpensive and seems to be effective. https://www.amazon.com/Zinc-Orotate-9-5-200-Tabs/dp/B004UAPG46/
Zinc carnosine isn’t very expensive and can definitely be taken on an empty stomach. I take it with NAC. https://www.amazon.com/Doctors-Best-Zinc-L-Carnosine-Complex-Digestive/dp/B0035BYOSA/
If you eat a lot of red meat you don’t need to supplement zinc.
Yeah sure, but before taking anything concern your family doctor or dermatologist first. Because every hair is different, sometimes its just your diet or something else.
I have androgenic alopecia (heredity) that's why it works for me.

I removed nearly 20 warts with the help of Zinc Sulfate. Seriously Zinc Sulfate
84% when taken Orally
98.2% with Intralesional Injection
The stuff can be bought a lot of places.. like here

Huh? No I only take 20 mg of zinc a day now. I used to take zinc pills like optizinc: https://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-OptiZinc-120-Tablets/dp/B00020I7Q2/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1525883474&sr=8-1&keywords=optizinc
But I was taking like 270 mg! I know it was stupid, but I just wanted to fix my deficiency so bad. I had diarrhea all the time! When I overdosed however, I started getting hypothyroidism symptoms. It was a nightmare. So glad I moved to something that is low dose.
I'm about to order these two since the pharmacies near me don't have zinc and magnesium by itself: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000TMJZ4G/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A3IQGL03Z0MNP5&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01CKEBF48/ref=ox_sc_act_image_2?smid=ADVD72ZOFGYC8&psc=1 these are what u recommend right?

Jarrows formula with copper.
How have you attributed it to the zinc? If you skip it for a couple days do the side effects go away, and then immediately start again as soon as you get back on it?
I've been taking this Zinc for a year and haven't experienced any of the things you mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Source-Naturals-OptiZinc-120-Tablets/dp/B00020I7Q2
Here’s the zinc

I would strongly suggest trying the spinach before the supplements. I'm very sensitive to cellulose and boiling the spinach makes it so easy for me to digest. No gas, upset stomach, undigested greens in stool, or diarrhea.
Here's my supplement recommendations:
Vitamin A : $5 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00081KB2I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
