Sure, Wired to Eat is such a cool book, I need to reread it. It is mostly advocating for the paleo diet, but it teaches you how to use the an actual scientific process to evaluate how foods work you. Blood sugar testing is just a really good quantitative part of it. You want to eat foods which keep your blood sugar pretty level for overall health. There's an element of wanting to have high blood sugar for muscle gain purposes as insulin is a big driver of hypertrophy, but for general health purposes you want to avoid too high and too low blood sugar. I can't really comment on what Stan is having someone like Hafthor do in that regard.

It's been a while so I don't remember the exact testng guidelines, but you basically eat a meal and test your blood sugar a few hours later to see how you responded to it. He has a ton of graphs in the book showing people's almost opposite reactions to the same foods.

In the book he shows a person having no response to ice cream but a diabetic response to white rice, similar to what I myself experienced. I fucking love sushi and white rice, but I always feel like shit and bloated after, even if I dont each that much....now I know why! I don't exactly recall but I think rice put me up near 160 mg/Dl and actual hyperglecemia is 180+, I don't go above 100 if I just eat like a poptart. It's crazy!

so ye after doing that for 4 months, this time last year, I found that all the foods I'm eating now were things that kept my blood sugar constant like all day, digestion was good, energy was good and overall just felt great, even when doing minimal calories with those foods. Even beer I swear I have a neutral blood sugar reaction to, which is kind of insane lol. But I am not complaining. Granted it's mostly wheat beer, IPA's do give me a bit more of a blood sugar reaction. I believe its the wheat vs hops, just cuz wheat products and me vibe very well.

I had some shit in my life so I fell off the diet wagon from like april-december, but since hopping back on I feel sooooo fucking great. I've tried so many diets and this is the first one that just works for me. Wired to eat tho did teach me to self-choose foods for performance, having this diet work for me has been a decade worth of learning and trying all differents types of diet strategies.

There are some good tips on computer settings in this thread, but also I would strongly, strongly recommend the keto diet. Keeping carbs below net 50g per day for a solid two weeks will have a dramatic effect on your game. I have had ET since I was 12, I play Overwatch a lot and I try to do keto for about 2 weeks every 6 weeks or so, the more I do it the better things get over time. I got a ketosis blood glucose meter and when measuring in the late afternoon my ketone levels got up to around 3.0 which is where they need to be by the end of the first week. MCT oil on top of this also helped. Granted yes, the keto diet sucks balls, but when you get the reward of higher cognition and less tremor and see your game dramatically improve, it's worth it. Plus you really don't need to do it for longer than a couple weeks to a month. Honestly I can't get past 2 weeks so far but it's still got lasting effects.

Congrats on getting Kalydeco!


I've been taking it for about for almost a month now. I have G551D and DF508. I'm 26 years old.


When I started I was at my lowest lung function ever at about 55%. I started getting serious about exercising and doing TOBI for the first time in years about two weeks before i started taking Kalyedco and I have to say... to anyone that isn't running. start. really it makes a huge difference.


so the combination of running/TOBI/kalydeco has brought my FEV1 up to around 68%-70% in the last month which has been amazing. its hard to say how much of it is the running and how much of it is the kalydeco, but i will say that even after the first two weeks of running i still had a congested chest .. and i didn't exactly "wheeze" but if i was laying quietly i could hear this like ticking sound in my lungs when i would breath in and out, no matter how much i coughed i could never get that to go away. and just after a few days of kalyedco it was gone. i also don't cough at night at all anymore really. sometimes before i would not be able to sleep because of a cough and i'd go to the couch to relax / not feel like i was keeping my husband awake. hasn't happened since i started taking kalydeco!


i didn't cough up crazy amounts of mucus. i read a lot of blogs of people who did and was was worried it wasn't working. i've had maybe 3 days where i felt like i was bringing up more than usual. but what i have noticed is that if it is there, it comes up easier. other people also said they felt like their sinuses really opened up, which i also did not feel. i just saw a nose doc, and he told me its not mucus in there.. but that i just have inflammation in the lining, so i have some new nose spray and antihistamines for that.


i've gained 7 lbs from 119 to 126. and to be honest i was never much of a breakfast person, so forcing yourself to eat a fatty meal in the morning can be hard. I keep cheese sticks and peanut butter in the house at all times in case im too lazy to make something better.


i didn't have any of the negative side effects so i'm hoping that over time ill slowly be able to increase my FEV1 even more. My next check-up is in three months :)

You don’t have to. Your blood sugar literally changes minute to minute and hour to hour. It isn’t impacted by what you are eating even a day before. They even told me to eat a nice breakfast, just to avoid fruit juices directly before the test. It’s checking to make sure your pancreas is operating properly during pregnancy. So if sugar isn’t filtered out of your body within a few hours then your body isn’t processing glucose well anyway and you’ll quickly find that out from the test!

You can also buy a cheap monitor like I did from Amazon. They’re very easy to use. Take it first thing when you wake up, an hour after eating, two hours after eating. So for the record, I didn’t use this one specifically, it’s just the first one I saw: link

From the photo, the bright blue things are lancets - they’re basically the needles that go into your fingers. You’ll want to alternative fingers when testing - that helps prevent scarring (if you reuse them too much, it’ll get dull which causes the scarring). New lancet per blood draw. You’ll want to take the blood from the sides of the finger (though idk why) - too far to the side though and it’ll hurt more than necessary.

The test strips (here’s a closer look) are what reads your blood after pricking your finger. The side with the arrow goes into the machine and you’ll want the strip in the machine before you draw the blood (other side of strip, in the middle). Not sure if it was my machine being finicky, but I had to angle it a certain way so the blood wasn’t drawn up too quickly or the machine would throw up an error - you’ll have to play around with that. The strips are really the most expensive part in all of this (there’s bits of gold in it) but it’s also the bit you can’t reuse.

The silver pen looking thing is what holds the lancet. You basically open it like a pen and put a lancet in before recapping. You’ll probably have numbers - the lower the number, the less the lancet comes out (shallower prick), the higher the number, the more the needle comes out (deeper prick / if you develop calluses).

Ideal, by the books method of using it is alcohol swab the finger/area you will prick. Put a new lancet into the pen thing. Turn on machine and put the strip in. Immediately prick, squeeze blood out, dip the strip into the puddle of blood and wait the 1-2 seconds for your result (or notification of error...in which case you repeat the dipping with a new test strip). Clean and bandage your finger.

You’ll want most tests under 140. Occasional blips are ok (ie your baby shower and gender reveal are ok) but don’t make it a daily thing.

The meals don’t have to be full sit down meals - 3 normal meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) + 3 snacks in between...which is a lot easier said than done in the beginning. After like a week, I found myself constantly starving so that made eating a lot easier (ofc then I found myself staring longingly at my food and waiting for the next meal to come).

For tracking purposes, I found glucose buddy to be great. I jotted down what I ate in the notes section and at the end of the week, you can download a report with your numbers and your meals come up as little footnotes.

Edit: as an aside, the monitor comes with a pouch for you to put everything into. There’s a mesh zipper pocket on one side (for bandaids, alcohol pads, lancets) and elastic bands on the other. Both the pen and monitor goes alongside the spine, the test strips stay in the container it comes in and goes perpendicular to the spine.

I definitely felt depleted and woozy and awful in the mornings, but I got a blood glucose tester and tested myself in the morning. My blood glucose was actually fine, suggesting the issue was high grehlin. Grehlin is the “hunger hormone” and it makes you feel awful in similar ways as low blood sugar. My response was to start drinking water right away and maybe a protein shake. If you can expand your stomach the grehlin levels should drop. I’m talking like a quart of water, not a glass. I noticed that was less of an issue as my sleep improved, so I think a disregulated autonomic nervous system is a big factor in waking up with a chaotic hormone status. So a structured evening routine and falling asleep at the same time every night helped.

As far as eating enough without feeling bloated, I actually eat big meals. The trick is that I immediately lay down afterwards, put on an eye mask, and focus on slow deep breathing. This sends a clear signal to my parasympathetic nervous system that it should get to work digesting the food and moving it through my GI tract. My minimum is 5m after solid meals, but typically do 10-15m. It does a great job of resolving the bloated feeling. It’s partly an immediate thing, but I’m hoping that over time I can train my body to respond more appropriately.

Each meal has 30+ grams protein (20-25 might be plenty if the quality is high) and 3g leucine to support muscle protein synthesis. If I’m trying to add calories I usually add fats like avocado or peanut butter.

A fasting blood glucose level of 162 mg/dL is pretty high. This should be under 100. Did you get an HbA1c test done as well? If not, that's another good test (ideally under 6%.)

You can also get your own meter and test strips for $40 from Amazon to see what your blood glucose does after meals. Or you can wait for your doctor to prescribe one and probably get it (and more importantly the costly test strips) covered by your insurance. It's worth checking which strips your insurance covers at the lowest cost since your doctor won't know. Then he/she can simply prescribe the ones your insurance covers best.

The overall goal for treating Type 2 diabetes is limiting your intake of carbohydrate to a level that your digestive system can handle. If you eat too many carbs too fast, the sugar gets sent to your blood faster than the rest of your body can absorb it. Extra glucose ends up floating around, which is what causes all the complications of diabetes (such as blindness and lost limbs.) The DCCT study established that if you can keep your glucose level well-controlled, you will not have diabetic complications.

Sometimes your doctor may have prescribed Metformin. Ideally he/she also prescribed a glucometer (blood sugar meter) and test strips. If you did not get a glucometer, call your doctor back and ask for one. This is going to be your new best friend in diabetes management.

So how do I keep my blood sugar levels under control?


Start writing down the following every day:

  1. Blood glucose level when you first wake up.
  2. Blood glucose level before each meal
  3. The total carbohydrate content of your food each time you eat
  4. Blood glucose level 1h after eating
  5. Blood glucose level 2h after eating

    Adjust your carbohydrate intake so that your blood glucose levels are as low as you can get, ideally down to these levels:

  • Fasting: under 100 mg/dL (5.5 mmol/L)
  • One hour after meal: under 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)
  • Two hours after meal: under 120 mg/dL (6.6 mmol/L)

    If you get to the point where meals with under 10-20g of carbohydrates are causing you to exceed these levels, talk with your doctor. You may need a different treatment plan.

I hear the best way to monitor ketones is through blood monitor. It's something I want to monitor to see how my levels are affected after eating certain foods but it's not a must. Keep in mind that ketones and blood glucose are also circadian. So measurements in the morning will show higher blood glucose even if you are fasted.

Happy to hear about your weight lose! Statins come with risk/side effects and really should be taken as a last resort. Frankly doctors like yours who so friviously throw drugs at problems piss me off.

LDL-C is not a direct measurement, but is estimated from HDL, Total Cholesterol and Triglyceride measurements. To get a direct measuremnt of LDL in your blood you need to take an advanced lipid panel test to measurw LDL-P. This will provide you with a measurement of LDL particle sizes. Why this matters is because small LDL particles increase your risk of heart disease while large LDL particles do not.

LDL particles are the only transportation mechanism in the body for lipids (fat). When you are on a high fat diet (or do IF) you while have more LDL particles, which all contain cholesterol, and hence a higher LDL-C - this tells you very little. Small LDL particles are recycled to liver via HDL, so it is not good that you have low HDL - this is a better indicator of heart disease risk.

On top all of this the LDL-C measurements can be screwed up just by what you ate a day or two leading up to the test. You can get a very low LDL-C by overeating a 24/7 high carb diet 3 days before your blood draw.

Weight loss also really screws up LDL-C readings. You need to be stable for a couple months to get a good reading.

I would also get a test your C-reactive protien levels. This is a marker of inflammation and a much better marker foe heart disease risk. You want a low c-reactive protien levels.

Honestly I would never go on a statin without knowing for sure there was an issue and hands down a calcium scan of the heart will 100% tell you if there is a problem.

I studied this extensively when I got high LDL-C reading.

I'd like to point out that urine-based keto strips aren't the best way to test for ketosis, because you can be in ketosis without ketones showing up in urine. Finger-stick blood testing is the best way to go, but it's not cheap because you have to get a meter, and the test strips are considerably more expensive than glucose strips.

An alternate way to check is indirectly, through blood glucose testing, but this doesn't work if you have either diabetes or metabolic syndrome. In short, you need to check your glucose four to six times a day, before eating, as you begin to enter ketosis. When you first cut carbs out of your diet, you should see a drop of some greater or lesser magnitude, but after a few days, it should come back up and settle at a pretty stable level. That's a good indicator that your body has started to produce ketones to maintain your blood glucose at a stable level.

The honest answer is nobody can tell without checking your blood.

The good news is that you can get a decent test kit for less than dinner out and have an answer in a couple of seconds.

Here is the cheapest kit of a meter, lance and test strips that I could find. Get a meter and check you blood when you get up in the morning before breakfast (12 hour fast), right before you eat lunch, 30 minutes after lunch, 2 hours after lunch.

This is considered WAY overkill by most but it will give you a really good view of where you sit throughout the day and if you are getting huge spikes/drops or constant values (low, normal or high).

For the average person normal blood sugar levels are between 4.0 to 5.4 mmol/L (72 to 99 mg/dL) when fasting and up to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating.

Hey, you're okay. Try and calm down. You don't even know that you have diabetes. There's other reasons for this. Try and get one of these, sleep with a pillow at the bottom of your bed so you don't hit the foot board, and try and get some better fitting shoes. Check your feet daily for any open wounds or redness.

Hi all, I am sorry if this is not fit for here, and by no means a replacement. I highly recommend going to the Doctor for actual test results. That being said, there is the idea of a home A1C check at home. I've used this before between doc visits to check how I am doing and see if more fundamental changes are needed and keep myself on track. Whaaaat is thiiiis? LOL Please share! I thought I've heard of everything by this point.

I have a mild case of anemia. I can get extra crabby/weak/dizzy + the heart palpitations & muscle stiffness when it gets too low but thankfully I've never been hospitalized or required transfusion. I've managed to catch it just before it happens. I regulate it with pills and diet but for now but I've been struggling for years to get to to a normal number. (I just never get there.)

While the finger nail thing is true, I don't go by it. My beds are just always pale. I got myself one of these so I can track BOTH my sugar, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. There are these ketone meter kits that include the strips and digital readout device/meter.
We use this one which can use both glucose strips and ketone ones.
There are cheaper strips like the urine ones but in the beginning of the keto journey I find it more useful to do blood ketone testing for more accurate and immediate monitoring plus get a satisfying number "score".

The only real product that you can purchase is a blood ketone monitor; something like this.

That being said; they're expensive, and it's certainly worth asking the question "do I really need to be that aware of my blood ketone levels?". For most people, the answer is no because there are other metrics you can use to track your progress towards your personal health goals:

  • Athletic performance
  • Tape measure (take measurements)
  • Caliper readings
  • Energy levels
  • etc

For some reason, this subreddit really likes to downvote stuff pertaining to actually testing if you're in nutritional ketosis. I, myself, find it helpful to ensure I'm not getting carb creep from surprising areas.

Those Next Link meters are great, (I've got one that I use for my main meter even though I don't use the medtronic pump anymore.) BUT, the way it works is via a proprietary RF that gets picked up by those Medtronic pumps. So there isn't anything that will translate that to a smart phone, normally.

People have finagled closed loop systems with an android phone/Dexcom, a carelink USB dongle, a raspberry pi and a medtronic pump though. (The smartphone has the blood sugar number on it and it has an app that translates it to the pump to give insulin or not via the carelink.) So, its probably possible to reverse engineer a carelink USB thing and hook it up to a smart phone, then write your own custom app to grab the data, but that's a lot of work when there are already bluetooth meters that exist that accomplish the same thing.

Wow. I think he really needs an A1c test done. Perhaps showing him how poorly he's doing will have some effect. You can even buy an instant home A1c meter and force him to take it.

Does he even see an endocrinologist? Has he had a thorough vision exam?

I have this meter. Has a USB port built in for charging and data transfer. No extra cables to keep track of, and you don't have to install the software if you want, but it makes it loads easier to manipulate the data.

I use the FreeStyle Lite Glucometer, and it's relatively affordable because of my insurance. I'm guessing if I didn't have insurance, i'd be looking at other options like the ones you've mentioned. I hit my protein most days. Sometimes I even go a little above it. I bought the glucose meter kit that my nutritionist suggested. It’s been an exact match the last two times I’ve had blood work done so I trust the readings.

I don't think the display is OLED, I think it's just an LCD. Could be wrong though.

USB makes so much damn sense

I love that it wirelessly tells my pump what the reading was.

As for cost, this one is the same thing minus wireless communication, and it's less than $10. Insurance covers the strips, for me anyway.

I know of two groups developing ketone breath meters to determine acetone concentrations in the breath. But I'm not sure how those levels correlate with blood BHB levels, and they are not cheap.

Welcome to the club! Though not really, since being diabetic sucks. But here's some advice:


When I was first diagnosed, I sat down with a nutritionist for an hour. She helped me learn the difference in carbs, how they affect me, and how to portion them. She gave me easy charts to follow and advice on meal plans. It was nice because she wasn't judgey and didn't make me feel stupid for not really knowing what Carbohydrates on labels meant. Maybe you should seek out an appointment with one?


Get a blood glucose meter. It will tell you what your blood sugar is at. They're pretty cheap and available on Amazon or Walmart. You can measure it when you first wake up to see what your body naturally sits at without any food in it. Then measure it 2 hours after a meal and see how your body processed what you just consumed.


Also, you're AIC is not crazy high. With good diet and a little movement, you can get it back into the 5's or even 4's. Normal A1C range is under a 5.7. If you can lower your numbers, they'll take you off medication. But if you ignore the results and keep letting your A1C rise, you'll be put on higher dosages and more pills and then insulin. I know it's hard scary depressing news, but it's life saying "hey, it's time for a change."

i had the exact opposite experience. i bought the A1CNOW from amazon and had absolutely no issues with it. both tests (since it comes with 2 in the pack) were within .2 of eachother (5.6 and 5.4) and averaged out to the 5.5 i got from the lab a month prior.

  • i extracted as much blood as i do for normal blood tests.
  • note, too much will invalidate the test. anyone saying they need 5 times more than what a normal blod sugar test requires did not read the instructions or watch the video tutorial

  • mixing it and being on a time limit is no bug deal. you have plenty of time assuming you know what youre doing and read the instructions first.
  • the packaging warns you repeatedly that you are on a time limit. trying to figure it out as you go along is foolish.

  • yes, the meter only works with the included sample holder. had you read the instructions, you'd know that.

  • results take about 5 minutes to process. theres a timer so its not a big deal. set it on a table and leave it alone for 5 minutes.

    tldr: yes, this is a bit more complex than a blood sugar test. but assuming you read the instructions, you should have no problem with it at all. if you dont read the instructions, you have noone to blame but yourself.
