Might be a little late but I had really bad acne for a kid and still would as an adult if I didn’t adopt a strict skincare routine and diet (it’s not that bad). Drinking water and changing your pillowcases frequently (every week to two weeks) also will help especially if you start putting all this product on your face. see note at the end*
For some, cutting out either, some, or all of the following helps alleviate acne: Dairy, Oil, Sugar, Gluten. But since you said you had no changes in diet I won’t go into that. Sorry in advance for formatting errors as I did all of this from mobile. Some products have instruction in Korean but I will tell you how to use them. Everything is used everyday/every night unless specified.
*Note: you may need to slowly introduce these products. Most of them are geared toward moisturizing and preventing aging as well. If you do anything, I’m at least recommend exfoliating often, changing pillow cases and properly moisturizing your skin using the sheet masks as well as possibly vitamin E serums. I plan on getting some but have no money rn, but Belei sent me free samples and I loved it. I think The Ordinary also carries some. Also, properly washing your face will probably help as well, and I’d recommend getting at least a spin brush. Over rubbing your face can be harmful to the skin and skin brushes usually clean well enough without harm.
I hope this helps! This is my whole routine but if anything jumps out feel free to not look at everything! I’m of course not a dermatologist but this helped me and I now only get pimples usually if I eat excess of the previously mentioned triggers :) my skin is now brighter and dark spots clear up in about 2-3 months but are usually lighter after about two weeks.
I would suggest getting facial scrub pads like these to help get rid of the dead skin ( i get mine from Target in a pack of 12 or so). The Body Shop also has this little thing that will help, but I don't think it's as abrasive as I prefer so I don't use it often. It looks like they have some good facial scrub pads as well. I use retin-a micro 3-4 days a week, and I get peeling and dryness when I use it too often. Exfoliating the dead cells helps keep it smooth.
Also, use a good moisturizer. I'm fond of Clinque products. Go to one of their stores and ask for a consultation. Be firm with them and tell them of your current skincare regimen- and that you only need a moisturizer (some of them will try to show you other products, but most of them are pretty good). They should help you find something. I'm a fan of their moisture surge when I need extra moisture; their super rescue antioxidant moisturizer at night (I rotate with another on the nights I use retin-a) and I LOVE their superdefense spf 25.
Keep in mind I rotate these (except the SPF, I use that daily) so it seems like a lot of money, but in reality, I only purchase the items every 5-7 months or so. They also have some great foundations you can use that will help moisturize and cover like this one.
I'm partial to Clinique, but I know you may not like them. The thing that's great about their line is that they have options for dry and oily skin. You may also want to try a thicker/creamier moisturizer (I've heard good things about MAC). I've used this one by Smashbox and I liked it but it was a little too thick for me, so it may be what you like! I like it in the winter time, and I use one by Stila in the summer.
Also, check out this video by Lisa Eldridge on covering up acne. She's my favorite makeup artist, and she'll give you good tips for great products (a lot of which are pricey, but she does show affordable items as well).
Good luck!
Thick curly hair clean & tamed:
I am a fan of dry shampoo. Brands like batiste and shhh! Can be found at Target, Walmart, five below. IT'S BEST applied before bed, so it's absorbing oils overnight, comb out in the morning.
I have long hair that I sleep with it in braids or two buns on either side of my head. Don't put your hair up tightly, or you risk traction alopecia.
Using a wide tooth comb on wet washed hair with a leave in conditioner will help battle Frizz.
...................................................................
Clean and odor free:
The parts of you that stink are going to be creases and folds; so daily with mild soap (I like a small bit of dr. Bronner's of your preferred scent mixed with a basin of warm water, use a washcloth to apply to your dirty areas, then wipe with a rinse water rag twice to remove soap and dirt, then pat dry.
Areas of focus:
Face, neck, chin (especially creases if you have a double or triple chin),
Armpits
Under breasts/between breasts if you have big boobs.
Belly button
Genitals/groin, lifting under your gut if you have one,
Butt crack, under-cheeks if you have a big butt,
Hands
Feet.
For any open sores, clean according to your doctor's instructions. I have lymphedema which has a smell when it leaks. I use abdominal pads to soak up most of the liquid and medipore to cover the whole pad and adhere it to my skin. If it's very bad smelling, I change the dressing twice a day using skin prep pads to avoid skin tears, before applying the adhesive. Then I'll wrap that area with a clean roll of reusable fabric bandage and I have sometimes sprayed the fabric with a bit of febreeze on the side not touching my skin, or kept inexpensive activated charcoal packets tucked under the fabric but above the dressing, if that makes sense.
Looking your best re: skin flaking;
If your skin is flaking constantly and you don't have a diagnosed reason, your skin is most likely too dry, or you are not exfoliating well. I exfoliate twice a week by taking a long shower, but if you can use a bath to save water, that's better. (I can't get out of a bath on my own.)
Let your skin soak/become wet for 10+ minutes.
I use both a product exfoliant, (exfoliating body wash + scrub), and once that's done well I use a Korean body scrub washcloth like this :
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SG4YWYL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_p9RKDbDQZ4C7H
You can find them online or at Daiso for a dollar or so each, they're machine washable and very effective. You don't have to apply a ton of pressure and they don't damage living skin, only the dead skin.
After I have rinsed, I use a body oil or body cream, depending on the time of year and how my skin is behaving. A lotion with lanolin, cocoa butter, or almond oil should do well. I like natural lotions best.
As for clothes that look good, I find I feel best about myself in a maxi-cut skirt, as long as it's not so, long or loose it catches my wheelchair wheels. I look dressed up without having to have freshly shaved legs or a perfectly toned form. I pair bright skirts with a simple blouse that's roomy but conservatively cut, and then I pair a cardigan, denim jacket, or blazer if it's likely to be cold. I'm in clothes that are soft fabrics, not restrictive, and I look put together.
Simple jewelry like earrings OR a necklace, a ring, and a watch on opposite hands, plus a coordinating purse helps you look put together.
I also buy pretty patterned skirts to pair with a solid top, or I wear a patterned top with white jeans and a black blazer, etc.
Alternatively, a monochromatic look can be great, black pants, black pumps, white blouse, black purse? Add a red beaded chunky necklace, tiny silver and pearl ring, red headband or glasses, and tie a red and white scarf to the handle of your tote and you've gone from ” Olive garden waitress” to ” put together."
Keep a lint roller or brush in your car or tucked into a bag to clean off crumbs, pet hair, etc.
I hope this is helpful, feel free to ask if you have questions.
That's about it... I used to get cystic in-growns, huge bloody gross... like why I am I waxing if this is the result?? But with the right person, and with the acnedote and a little more care I've been able to all but eliminate them. Best of luck, fellow coarse-curly-pubic-haired person :)
I've had KP since I was a kid and am finally getting handle on it in my 30s. My current routine is glycolic lotion twice a day, creams on the affected areas 3-4 times a day, and then physical exfoliation and using zinc or sulfur soap a couple times a week to keep the bumps at bay. But since skincare is YMMV, here's the exhaustive list of almost two decades of treatment, in case some of these other things will work for you!
100% of the items can be purchased via Amazon in the US - it's pretty much the only way I shop.
Beginner Level
If your KP has just appeared, focus on physical+chemical exfoliation and moisturizing. Look for lotions with the following ingredients:
Paula's Choice and Derma Doctor's KP duty both work well because they combine a few of these, but you can also get Amlactin, Eucerin and Glytone which are more focused on a single ingredient. Nearly all of the Eucering, Gold Bond, Cetaphil, etc. creams that work have one of the above ingredients, so take a look at the back of the bottle or on CosDna to figure out what works best for you. Prescription creams include Carmol 40 and Ammonium Lactate in higher concentrations.
Physical exfoliation includes:
My dermatologist also recommended moisturizing CONSTANTLY, which really helped smoothe my arms. According to his instructions, "constantly" meant that I needed to be able to feel the lotion on my skin 24/7 for at least 3 weeks, which for me meant a new layer of cream every hour or two. Pretty much any moisturizing lotion or cream will do. I'm partial to [CeraVe Moisturizing Cream] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013GDK3SQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (creams are less watered down than lotions, and this one drys down wonderfully, leaveing my skin feeling buttery but not sticky). Lush dream cream and Aveeno are also faves.
Intermediate Level
If a bit of exfoliation and moisture aren't working, you might want to consider if there are other skin conditions making your KP worse. For example, it turned out for me I had some fungal skin issues that made my KP bumps more inflamed. Topical steroids can help, but use with care as they can cause skin thinning. Try adding something with the following ingredients in to see if any of the following work. Also talk with your derm about getting a mild prescription treatment that might include an antibacterial or steroid component.
As others have mentioned, sunlight also helps. Either give yourself 15 minutes of sun a day or look into UV treatments.
Finally, consider dietary factors – for me cutting out dairy, sugar, and gluten when I really want crystal clear skin makes a big difference. Adding healthy oils and fats to your diet can also improve skin quality.
Advanced Level
I not only have KP, but years of scarring and redness (Post Inflammatory Erythema, or PIE) from picking at the bumps when I was younger. Laser treatments have almost 100% gotten rid of this and made my arms the smoothest and clearest they've been in almost two decades. However, these are pricey (for me, ~$200 a treatment and it took 4) and a serious time commitment. But if nothing else works, consider it.
Other Tips
Hi bookishgeek! I'm Melanie, nice to meet you :) I am single, by choice, and loving it. I can focus solely on myself - my home, my time, my friends. One awesome thing I'm doing solo.... making more friends! My confidence has been increasing and I'd like more peeps in my life :)
To help me make friends, [I need to smell decent] (http://www.amazon.com/The-Body-Shop-Moisture-Chocomania/dp/B009S2YQS8/ref=sr_1_6?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1394320303&sr=1-6). And I'd be friends with somebody who smelled like chocolate in a heartbeat. Thanks for the contest!
I have super, super dry skin. As in, it cracks and bleeds it gets so dry, mostly on my legs. So here's my helpful hint.
First, do a body scrub. http://www.amazon.com/Tree-Hut-Scrub-Hawaiian--Ounce/dp/B0018DAUKI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1332887491&sr=8-3 is my preferred one, because it really scrubs away the dead skin, and it also moisturizes in the shower. And leaves the skin super soft! I'd recomment using a body wash with shea butter in it, if you have one. It does help.
And after the shower, I use a shea butter body butter or lotion, if I feel dried out. Aveeno makes some great lotions that aren't greasy and don't stink, and they work well for me. If I'm super, super dried out, I go for a shea butter body butter - I have one from that Tree Hut brand that I love.
But definitely look for shea butter. You'll know if you use enough because you'll feel the difference. Besides, if you have tiny legs, you're not going to need as much as those like me, who have much larger legs. =)
I've struggled a lot with ingrown hair over the years, but I changed everything up 3-4 months ago and have gotten good success. In pursuit of better shaves and skin I changed razors from disposable mach 3s to a DE safety razor and have gotten good shaves, but changing up what products I used probably have made as much difference. Specifically, I had great success with the cool fix, once or twice daily, and REN scrub 3-4x weekly. Otherwise, how is your shave technique? A few small changes there could make a world of difference.
I did a ton of research on ingrowns when I started getting them just shaving my legs (ugh). This is what has helped:
I’d also take the fungal advice seriously. Ingrowns can get infected really fast and you need to be sure you’re treating the whole issue and not just part of it.
Good luck! I hope it all heals soon!
Edit: here’s a funny comic about ingrown hairs if you need a little pick me up while you’re battling this.
ACK, not the St. Ives. Those walnut shells are variably shaped and can really scratch the skin. St. Ives is generally hated. If she uses an acid exfoliants, she should not use a physical exfoliant anyway. This is the one I was talking about., but again, you should choose one or the other, NOT both. I'd go with a chemical exfoliant, like the lactic acids below, because they can't leave microabrasians.
I'd recommend the Ordinary one if you are looking for a budget option, rather than a random, no name brand. If you want a more luxurious options Sunday Riley Good Genes is a good option. You can probably get the ordinary in Canada for less directly from them, not amazon.
Yes, the hydro boost is great. If her skin isn't super dry, it should work well for her.
Again, I'd go with a more known brand than a private label unknown for a night cream. She can use the hydro boost at night too, but if she needs more moisture (I do, personally), you might need something a little heavier. It's hard for me to recommend a night cream without knowing your budget or her skin type.
This is gonna make you softer than a baby's ass. I'm not even joking. You can get it at trader joes and it is an incredible product.
Any of these if he's in to fruity scents. My personal favorite is the strawberry and god does it smell like strawberries. The key is to layer the body wash and the body butter. If you want long lasting, this'll do it, but you will smell like a walking Lush store for the first like 2 hours.
This is my holy fucking grail. It smells so good. Almond galore. Also, it's phenomenal for shaving. Don't bother getting the body scrub that goes with it though, the TJ one blows it out of the water. I've heard really good things about the Almond Milk Concentrate that goes with it but not tried it personally.
Personally, I think the things that are gonna last the longest are gonna be the TJ scrub (you stay soft for like 3 days), and a body butter. An extra thing you can do is get really fragrant shampoo and then your hair will also smell super nice.
Literally drop everything you’re doing rn and buy some Tend Skin. It burns so good. And works so fast.
Tend Skin The Skin Care Solution For Unsightly Razor Bumps, Ingrown Hair And Razor Burns, 8 Fl. Oz Bottle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ECQ7G4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VJ-MDbQP3TDC4
Then if you wanna get really into it, make sure to exfoliate the area every day. If you’re shaving often I would use an anti-bump scrub like this one:
GiGi No Bump Body Scrub With Salicylic Acid for Ingrown Hair & Razor Burns https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DYJJQS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aN-MDb4GTV8XM
When you use the scrub on the area make sure to start using it 1-2 days before shaving/waxing and then wait 24 hours (or until the next day) to start using it again. It’s very important that you use the scrub often to exfoliate as your hair starts to grow back. This removes the dead skin cells that hairs can get trapped under and lifts the hairs to promote them growing outward and not inward, causing those painful bumps. To really get the job done, try applying the scrub with an exfoliating mitt like this one:
Skinerals Scrubbing Exfoliator Mitt - Exfoliating Gloves To prep and exfoliate skin for self tanner sunless tanning (Exfoliator Mitt) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNVKRMP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bS-MDbNCC2Y5P
After shaving or waxing, apply some finipil to the area for the first few days as the skin is still raw and prone to infection. This will not only fight against infection and ingrowns but will have a really soothing and cooling effect on the skin. Pricey but worth it:
finipil Lait 50,1.5 fl oz, 44 ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C4YJL96/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_bT-MDbDVD2PJ8
Do all these things and you should be good. Remember: our skin isn’t meant to be removed in the first place. It won’t simply play nice just because you want it to. You’re going to get ingrowns and bumps and dark spots sometimes no matter how hard you try so you just have to accept that you’re human and be okay with it. But I definitely believe you can manage ingrowns greatly by committing to a regimen.
I don't know if you suffer from the same thing I do but I'll describe and tell you what worked for me.
I do not have the stinging you are mentioning but I also don't shave my legs every day. My legs DO itch like crazy after I shave and I figured out that the reason is because when the hair grows back , the hair is trying to get through the skin and that causes the itching. I often find hairs are trapped under the skin ( ingrown ).
I found two solutions. Either

After THAT I use Amalactin body lotion because it has alpha hydroxy in it which also helps with exfoliation.

Okay , again I don't know if your issue is the same as mine. Like I don't really know what to say about why your legs are stinging other than if they are just too irritated because of what you are dealing with or are you scratching too? I know I will scratch my legs bloody before I figured out a solution and would do this unconsciously. Like I woke up at night scratching my legs.
I smashed my face last year when I fell down a mountain. Thanks to the following, my face is back to the exact same with the exception of a teeny scar. Mederma, a tad expensive due to SPF but worth it cuz it was my goddamn face, triple antibiotic ointment linked here but cheaper when purchased as a generic, and Cocoa butter with vitamin E, also available in Walmart/Target places for half the price as listed here. Basically what you're looking for is lotions with vitamin E. I've had luck looking in the "ethnic" hair/lotion/body products section, and there's a whole variety of oils and lotions and rubs. Personally, my favorite is this one and it's usually $2 in store. Bio Oil can be a bit expensive, but a great and comparable product is Africa's Best Moroccan oil, or generic Baby Oil. Again, most of these products are available at Walmart/Target for a fraction of the price. They're all fairly pricey online because of the weight/shipping prices, despite it being shipped via Prime.
My self-care is one of the first things that goes out the window when the inevitable wave of depression hits.
I’m actually pretty proud of myself though because lately I’ve been better about showering and brushing my hair!
This is my favorite body scrub! I always feel so much better after I use it in a warm shower! It makes me super smooth, helps with my dry skin and eczema, and smells amazing!
Hey I was just going to say...I, too, have very dry areas on my face, to the point my skin starts peeling. And I also have to be careful what kind of exfoliator I use bc they can be too harsh and make my skin break out. I found two scrubs on Amazon that have a smaller, finer “grain”...PLUS, they help even out your skin tone, brighten up your skin, and actually help keep it moisturized too. And they honestly aren’t expensive (especially since you’re not supposed to do it more than 3 times a week...max...so it can last a good long time).
I have used both and can attest to both being amazing. This brand also makes five other scrubs...the Himalayan Salt Scrub should NOT be used on your face but I do like it for small areas on my body (it can sting if you have any tiny cuts or sensitive areas tho). The other four from them (Spirulina, Brown Sugar, Charcoal, and Coffee), I have not tried.
Pomegranate Scrub
Coconut Scrub
If you ever decide to try any of these out, I hope they really help! I know how hard it is to get dry skin under control...
Edit: words bc it’s late lol
Which salt scrub? I rotate these:

I love exfoliating, and if that's your goal, just get these. Wash your body with soap as usual, maybe take time to wash your hair/shave/etc (it works way better after you've been soaking a while), rinse, then start scrubbing with this thing (without soap at all). The amount of gross dead skin that you'll scrub away is just great. Very good for ingrown hairs too.
If you're looking for just a spa-like luxurious scrub, I like this. I don't find it nearly as effective as the previous towels, which are the best exfoliators I've used in general (not counting chemical exfoliators).
For you: One of my favorite movies
For me: One of my favorite smells
Thanks for the contest, I love Kevin :D
That's like a scrubbing brush! More like something like an actual scrubbing soap like https://www.amazon.com/Tree-Hut-Sugar-Scrub-Tropical/dp/B007DGRT3K/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=body+scrub&qid=1555894297&s=gateway&sr=8-3 :o)

I’ve been waxing for about two and a half years. It’s the best. Depending on how sensitive you are it can be pretty uncomfortable but everyone is different. The waxer I went to was great and very experienced so I’m sure that helped with how how it felt to me.
I also starting using this. GiGi No Bump Body Scrub with Salicylic Acid for Ingrown Hair & Razor Burns, 6 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DYJJQS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_trn6AbDRS3ZNF
It helped with prevent in-grown hairs and keep my skin smooth.
Sounds like there's a few issues -- some thoughts & ideas that I haven't seen mentioned:
I use these Korean exfoliating cloths. The nice thing about them is by pressing lighter or harder you can control the exfoliation. They’re also pretty cheap, last a long time and are easy to use.

I bought a bottle of the Neutrogena Body Clear and mid way through the bottle I got what seemed like a reaction. Not sure if I scrubbed too hard but my whole chest broke out with little bumps and it took a couple weeks to go away. I havent dared to try it again but I do use stridex in the red box that seems to have helped more than anything. It's still not perfect but much improved!
I also started using a charcoal/mint exfoliator that I think has been helping [This one!] (https://www.amazon.com/Natures-Gate-Charcoal-Exfoliates-Recyclable/dp/B074K81746?th=1)

Seven dollars and it'll last forever... I'm not too crazy about these 'special/fancy' shower products but this makes me feel like a fuckin King.
My apologies. I bought this some time ago. The price for the product I bought says $9.24. I've been giving them away to friends and family. There's no way I can use all of these alone!
No particular brand. Amazon turns up this which would be over a years supply if it's just you using them. And yes, you want to use them on wet skin.
Sugar scrub like this you use it on the areas you're going to shave. Exfoliating with a loofah or whatever works too.
Alba Acnedote Scrub has helped me with chest/back breakouts.
