Hi! I'm a medical student with RA, diagnosed 10 years ago when I was in high school. The experience of a flare and getting this diagnosis is such a pain in the ass (the literal, figurative, and emotional asses) if we're being quite frank. When I was diagnosed and then later on when I had a rough, persistent flare, the emotional burden was pretty heavy. There was a lot of crying, a lot of anger (at God, my genetics, my immune system, etc.), and a lot of stubborn refusal to utilize or even ask for things that could've made my life a bit easier. You've already taken that step by posting here, so that's one down! This sub and finding peers who either are going through similar things (there were a surprising number of women with autoimmune disorders in my class) or were just good, understanding people made a huge difference for me. If you're comfortable talking about your experience to others, I think might be surprised at how many people know the struggle.

Physical things that I did find helpful:

  • Grippy rubber sheets to help open jars without requiring hulk-like grip strength (rubber bands around lids also work in a pinch). I got mine from my PT but it's similar to these.
    • There's also this one that I've not tried but it looks neat
  • BIG pencil/pen grips are a godsend for achy hands
  • Very cushy tennis shoes. My first pair were Brooks motion control shoes and they made me feel like I was walking on a cloud. You may not want/need that much cushion... it's a lot.
  • If you can manage it at your practice and if typing/writing notes is more of a challenge these days, see if you can get a medical scribe to help you out there.

Being comfortable talking to people about it might take time, but you'll definitely get there soon. You're a doctor! You've had to learn how to talk to people about all sorts of uncomfortable things, so you can absolutely do this. Remember that although you have this diagnosis, you did nothing to "earn" it and therefore theoretically there's nothing to be embarrassed about. I know it's easier said than done. Try starting with people you know and trust- close friends, family- and then branch out as you're comfortable. I honestly make jokes about my "crap joints" and how "my body is rejecting me" quite often, and I find that the self-deprecating approach works well for breaking tension while talking to others about my RA.

Finally, it might feel like you're going stir crazy in your own body because doing anything physical is just a recipe for pain right now, but it will get better and you will get back to being active. "Normal" might not be the same as it once was, but you'll re-define it for yourself and your illness. You've just now been diagnosed, so your journey to finding the treatment plan that will work for you is just beginning. I'm sure you know these meds take time to reach their peak effect, so be patient (again, easier said than done, I know) and keep an open dialogue with your rheumatologist about how things are progressing. Be as active as you can stand without hurting yourself, even if it's just walking. Hopefully MTX will fix you right up in no time and you'll be back to doing all of the activities lickity split!

Wow, okay, that's a lot. Um...

tl;dr For ease of use, make things fatter, squishier, or grippier. If you can handle doing a full medical history and physical exam , you can deffo handle the RA talk. It gets better. <3

Here goes! It looks like I got all but 1 item from my current wishlist. Yah!

1.) Something that is grey.

2.) Something reminiscent of rain. Why not a raincoat?

3.) Something food related that is unusual. These are from Japan and Matcha flavor is hard to find in the US!

4.) Something on your list that is for someone other than yourself. Tell me who it's for and why. (Yes, pets count!) For my son! He's a nugget.

5.) A book I should read! I am an avid reader, so take your best shot and tell me why I need to read it! Guy Gavriel Kay is an amazing writer and I think everyone should read his books. They evoke so many emotions!

6.) An item that is less than a dollar, including shipping... that is not jewelry, nail polish, and or hair related! How about free? Read the classics!

7.) Something related to cats. I love cats! (keep this SFW, you know who you are...) NO.

8.) Something that is not useful, but so beautiful you must have it. I think by definition art is not useful, but very beautiful!

9.) A movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. Why? Because Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion are amazing.

10.) Something that would be useful when the zombies attack. Explain. For stabbing. It's a silent weapon, which is best. You don't want to attract more of the undead.

11.) Something that would have a profound impact on your life and help you to achieve your current goals. My current goal is to be more active as I try to lose weight, but foot pain is a big barrier to walking/exercising more. I have heard awesome things about this foot wrap and it would be a huge help and keep me from being in pain as I exercise!

12.) One of those pesky Add-On items. It's hard to find in stores now, weirdly. And it's all I wear daily!

13.) The most expensive thing on your list. Your dream item. Why? PS4!

14.) Something bigger than a bread box. EDIT A bread box is typically similar in size to a microwave. Home. Made. Cappucino. It can go right next to the breadbox.

15.) Something smaller than a golf ball. This is pocket sized!

16.) Something that smells wonderful. Apples!!

17.) A (SFW) toy. She-Ra is pretty safe for work

18.) Something that would be helpful for going back to school. If you're in college, you're gonna need one of these.

19.) Something related to your current obsession, whatever that may be. Adventure Time! Come on, grab your friends!

20.) Something that is just so amazing and awe-inspiring that I simply must see it. Explain why it is so grand. What's mrore amazing than being INSANELY comfortable? Just look at it! Get inspired to sleep. It looks so comfy, I can't handle it.

From Season 8: Easy Skillet Suppers

NOTE:
For the winner by OXO THIS is the model shown in the test results and THIS is the newer model. ~OP

TESTING NOTES

WINNER:
Magnetic Locking Can Opener by Oxo - $19.99

> This can opener was intuitive to use and easy to attach and detach from cans. It was "comfortable," "very smooth," and very efficient in operation. Because it is a traditional opener, this model leaves a lid with sharp edges (its only downfall), but minimizes potential danger with a magnet that allows "neat and safe" lid disposal.

3 others were also RECOMMENDED:

  • Kuhn Rikon Slim Safety Lidlifter - $11.95

    > Testers praised the handy "change in feeling" once the can was completely open. The "dishwasher-safe claim was spot-on: There were no changes in performance or appearance after several wash cycles. A few testers has mild complaints about the "awkward position" of the oversized turning knob, resulting in a slight demerit in the performance rating.

  • Progressive International Safety I-Can Opener - $12.79

    > The unique ratchet cutting wheel mechanism was "easy to operate" and comfortable, but was "hard to know when finished." Pincers disposed of the cut lid safely. For some testers, the instructions for this opener were "not obvious," even with visuals on the packaging.

  • Good Cook 4-1 HT Safe Can Opener - $9.99

    > "Clearly written instructions" and "smooth gears" made this opener easy and efficient as first use. Also, testers appreciated the "perceptible change in feeling" when the can opener had rounded the entire can. This model lost a few points for not having a lid-gripper.

2 others were RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS:

  • Zyliss Safe Edge Can Opener - $14.95
  • Miu CanDo Safety Can Opener - $9.99

    2 others were NOT RECOMMENDED:

  • Chef'n EZ Squeeze 1-Handed Can Opener
  • CIA Masters Collections Side Can Opener

Lightsaber Lamp or chopsticks are pretty cool. This apron, this thermos, these playing cards, this bottle opener, and this ice cube tray are also pretty sweet!

There's a variety of cat tote bags but I personally love this one or this one. I also love these coasters, this plush, this game, this cup, and these magnets.

This camping first aid kit looks super useful, as does this multitool, and you can never have too many torches. An inflatable pillow, or a funky backpack cover might be cool too.

I'm not great at looking for stuff for kids yet, so I can't really cover that aspect, but I hope you like some of these suggestions!

I've seen others have already said the obvious plates, bowls, pans, silverware. I'm trying to think of other usual stuff that after living in my own place for 6 years that I could simply not do without!

Bottle and wine opener

Nigh light To help make late night trips to the kitchen or bathroom less scary and dangerous for toes.

Shower caddy another style of caddy

Wall clock that doubles as a secret hide away!

I could go on and on but I know the great people of this sub will be recommending everything under the sun. Congrats on the new place. Good luck. Thanks for the contest.

>15 a piece?!?!,!?! R u high 15 for 3 I would have clicked buy we’re bartenders dude we work for tips and non magnetic openers are free from distributors

Hi Speedhabit, thanks for your feedback! The OPNR is definitely a premium product, inline with other premium bottle openers out there but with the slick design, high end materials, and powerful magnet, we hope we set ourselves apart! Last bottle opener you'll ever need, much higher quality than free ones you may receive!

And perhaps a conversation starter with customers (i.e. you smoothly open multiple bottles, with multiple caps sticking to the magnet at once... it's an eye-catcher!), leading to more tip opportunities... who knows?!

Our Brushed finished OPNR is priced at $12.99. We hope you consider the OPNR for your bottle opener needs! Thanks!

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you're having a great one.

What's made me happiest this week is that it was the end of this semester! I'm ready for a break. My favorite food of the moment is chili dogs since that's what I'm currently eating. :)

This bottle opener would be cool.

I have some of these, and some of these are just awesome. I particularly love the reindeer, skeleton, and the wrench.

As a bartender it always bums me out that the openers like these don't often work as fast/cleanly as a standard bar key; but I still love bringing a "different" one in from time to time for my own enjoyment.

You might like this hammer, or I think EDC was into the snail for a while.

I don't know if this counts, but Mr. Rogers is the person I want to be. There's just amazing about him.

I don't have this exact one. Got mine as a promotional item, but i have an opener along these same exact lines that is absolutely amazing! just sticks to your fridge and is strong enough to pop a beer bottle without having to touch the opener itself then catches the cap! its awesome especially when grabbing and opening multiple beers at a time.

Please - never buy that "premium" shaker.

A Boston shaker is what she would have learned on, and the fit stays true it's entire life, instead of the metal-metal contact that changes as the metal cools when mixing cold drinks.

Apart from that, this list is solid; I'd just go down to her bartending school and ask what a general starter kit is, a lot of the schools sell gear that they recommend too.

A good blade bottle opener is good too, I have a couple, and they're great for parties (just attach a string to a drawer and leave it on the counter for people to open that shit instead of them being idiots and opening it with your furniture (yeah, Dave)

u/glanmiregirl · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

When I am thirsty I love to drink wine. I will never drink whiskey when I am thirsty.

I will however drink scotchity, scotch, scotch :)

If I win, I'd love this

u/Jsmalley9 · 3 pointsr/mildlyinfuriating

Yes, that is the proper way to do it. You only need to make sure the tip is poking through, not a lot of the screw needs to pierce the end.

So as long as you’re relatively gentle when you’re towards the end you shouldn’t have too much of an issue with cork in the wine, especially with so many vineyards switching to synthetic cork. Plus I’d much rather have a little bit of cork in my wine from that than have to completely strain the bottle after the cork gets ripped.

I do strongly recommend using a waiter’s corkscrew (also known as a wine key, at least in the States) over the winged style.

If you’re buying expensive vintages that have been aged for a while I would recommend getting an Ah So opener . They are definitely harder to use, so practice on cheap wine first. But, once you get the hang of it you’ll never have an issue with breaking corks. They’re great for removing a broken cork and for wines that have really really been aged and have a delicate cork.

Edit: I suppose I should clarify “proper”. That was the way that I was taught when the restaurant I work for sent me to have professional training from a teaching sommelier.

If his favoriate game is Omaha hi/lo then he knows what he is doing, even if he’s an old geezer playing limit. There aren’t many mixed games/Omaha books out there.

Just get him poker swag. Something like nice plastic Copag or Kem cards would be more thoughtful and innocent on your part without having to endure too much agony to decipher what’s what in the poker world.

https://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-BO03-Casino-Bottle-Opener/dp/B004UOL6Z0

Or a seat cushion for the novelty sake of thinking about the comforts of his live table play. Maybe a cool chip protector for him to use. I’d seriously avoid getting him poker literature (especially that it could be rendered redundant upon receipt) if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Excellent question! I'm Jeff Who. In the government, if you want to move money to black ops, you use loopholes in regulations for federal contractors to shift money between divisions outside federal oversight.

Amazon uses secret products that if you buy them, it funnels profits directly to my BO. The BO project is funded entirely by sales of this product.

I have an older version of this Good Cook one: http://www.amazon.com/Good-Cook-Classic-Can-Opener/dp/B001CD1HJC/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1456885764&sr=1-2&keywords=good+cook+can+opener

I've had it for well over ten years. It actually unseals the can rather than cutting it, so no sharp edges and you can set the lid back on if you want to stick the can in the fridge for a day.
