1966 Chateau Lafite Rothschild

This was originally bought in futures and has been held in only two different cellars since. You’ll see from pictures the bottle condition is good, but more importantly the fill level is excellent.

I did some prior research to opening this. ’66 was a decent year for Bordeaux, but nothing outstanding. Most suggestions and reviews had this as ‘drink’ a number of years ago.

We opened both wines using a corkpop original (https://www.amazon.com/Cork-Pops-CECOMINHK08859-CorkPops-Original/dp/B0006IJV0Q/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_79_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=S8HKRHZ0J3KGJZE90XTQ). We’ve found these work excellently with very old bottles, sliding brittle corks out with ease and keeping them intact.

We decided to decant to remove sediment. The wine poured from the bottle with definite browning, but appear a good claret colour in the decanter (pictures).

First nose and taste had some corked elements, but everyone found these burned off quickly. It then started to show very dark prune and clove notes. The classic leather, tar and pencil shavings smells came through. One guest described it as girls leather bicycle seat haha

The palate showed acidity, but fruit was lacking for the most part, more of a steeped tea flavour. It was something special, but would have definitely been better a decade ago.

We drank this alongside oven roasted veal chops with a cherry balsamic reduction, side of farro with pine nuts and capers.

1986 Penfolds Grange Bin 95

This is my sisters birth year and was bought 15 years ago at a small wineshop in Quebec. Again, the bottle was in fantastic condition with a superb fill level.

1986 is rated as an outstanding vintage for Grange, named the best year of the 80’s. Penfolds has awarded ’86 a red star rating, which is given to those wines which are considered an exceptional vintage.

I checked my local wine store retail price for Grange, they sell the 2014 vintage for $711.

We decanted this and took our time with it.

The nose didn’t give away much, some fruit and alcohol, we found it fairly muted overall.

The taste on the other hand! Lets just say everyone was blown away. This wine had length that persisted on your palate for a good couple minutes. You could saver every sip and let it play in your mouth. Major elements of liquorice, cedar and smoke. You basically had to chew it down, and I say that in a great sense. There was a good balance of fruit that came out over time.

The wine continued to evolve and left our party disappointed we had to split it 6 ways. We all agreed this was outstanding and one of the best wines we have all ever tasted.

Speakers will make your life so much better. I'd recommend getting a shower speaker too, your flatmates will love you.

A door stop is the right answer.

If you get a memory foam mattress topper your life will be so much better. It makes any bed amazing, and, although they aren't particularly cheap, they can last a very long time. I have this one

Get some good quality pens and books of paper. You don't want the refil pads as they always fall apart sooner or later, get some which have metal binding on one side. For pens I always got a box of these or these. They make the vast amounts of notes you need to take much better.

Don't buy the recommended reading until you have checked how many copies the library has. There's a good chance you'll be able to read them enough without paying for them, or search Bookname.pdf into google and it will probably be there.

Pint glasses are very useful things to have, but I found it added a nice touch to my flat if they were all borrowed from pubs.

get a multipack of playing cards on the cheap from amazon. You'll probably get through a fair few packs in first year. Some poker chips were a nice thing to own as well. In 3rd year I got Cards Against humanity as well, and it is a very good game for predrinks

Get minimum 1 good frying pan, 1 good saucepan, a good wooden chopping board, a good chefs knife, a baking sheet, and a colander.

Get a bottle opener like this one and you will have hours of fun pinging the caps at people

I didn't use mine much in 1st year, but all the other years of uni my bike was a great thing to have. It allows you to shop further away (so cheaper) and reduces your reliance on public transport. It also means you can get out of your area of the city occasionally, which is nice.

A french press means you can make a whole pot of great coffee for your flatmates when you are all getting up after a heavy night, at which point they might crown you or start worshiping you or some shit

u/bridget1989 · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Yo, I'm cheap.

SET OF THREE FRICKING HEAD SCRATCHERS! These things work like a dream, for serious, and you can share 2 with 2 friends! (Someone bought me these already.)

There are a whole ton of these Yankee car air fresheners for $3.45 plus shipping!

Obvs, this $0.90 bottle opener ring

I also have/have had a lot of that cheap jewelery on my list that comes from Hong Kong or wherever, but I think this red camera charm necklace is REALLY cute, and I'd actually wear it.

This necklace is also cute.

Good contest! I'm always looking for under $5 products that I'll ACTUALLY USE, not just ones I add on to my list for the sake of winning a contest.

Edit! I see that you have a REALLY cool fricking dog! There are a lot of these cool LED collar lights to keep your pup visible on night-time walks. This one is a little but over $5 with shipping, but if you look around, I think there are other ones that might be under.

Here are my pups:

Lulu's tricks!

First off, you should add me on Steam (I'm wigriff everywhere, but it might show J.C.Wigriff on Steam).

Questions:

  • What is your favorite Nintendo series? What about your favorite Nintendo character? And your all time favorite Nintendo game?

  • What are your favorite non-Nintendo titles on PC or other platforms?

  • I walk into your tavern and lean up against the bar. You walk over to me and ask "What can I get for you." I look at you intently, and doing my best cool guy impersonation, say "Impress me." What drink do you make?

  • What's your favorite subreddit?

    Stocking Stuffer Ideas:

Since this is totally subjective, and you haven't provided criteria for who we're buying stocking stuffers for (Mom, Kids, Geeky Cousin Ted, etc.), I'm going to make my list very general so that it would fit anyone.

  • Cool Refrigerator Magnet Poetry Set

  • A USB Charging Station

  • A couple nice, colored, braided USB charging cables, because who couldn't always use an extra charger?

  • A scented candle, because everybody loves scented candles.

  • Premium All-in-one Wine Opener, Bottle Opener and Foil Cutter. Hell, it even comes with a lifetime money back guarantee.

It was very nice to meet you. :)
u/caseyjosephine · 4 pointsr/wine

I generally recommend getting great accessories, instead of wine itself. I've often been gifted wine by people who aren't into it; of course, I completely appreciate the gifts, but often they're just not to my taste.

Here are a few accessories that I love, that I think would be a great gift for someone who doesn't have them:

  • Decanter
  • High-quality double-hinged corkscrew (doesn't have to be expensive; I use this one at work and it's awesome
  • An Ah So opener, if he's into older wine.
  • Ice buckets or marble wine chillers
  • Nice stemware

If you must get wine, I will say that the only wine I'm always happy to receive as a gift is Champagne.

Keyring

  1. Kingston DT108 - solid flash drive, been using this one for years, never failed me. Looking for a larger capacity replacement, something that preferably lines up with the keys better?
  2. NITE IZE S-biner - pretty cool, fun to mess with.
  3. Utili-key - love the idea, but the knife is not as useful as I hoped. Looks cool on the ring though. Would appreciate suggestions on replacing it.

iPhone 5 leather wallet case - SPORT - Just got this one yesterday, nice construction, great feel, haven't quite broken it in yet though. It's a neat concept, the phone is magnetically attached to the wallet. I recommend you check it out!
u/vmflair · 2 pointsr/photography

Another vote for the amazing Domke. I have a F-2 and a F-3X and love, love, love using them! One trick with the Domke is to remove the brass snap(s) and ring(s) from the front flap and replace them with a Nite Ize Ahhh Stainless S-Biner:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037H9P4A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's a LOT easier to open, and you can unbuckle it from the top so when closing the flap it won't hit your camera. The bonus is that it has an integral bottle opener for that after-shoot beverage!

u/LumbermanSVO · 1 pointr/livesound

I have a tip for you!

It's not a leatherman, but I do get a small knife through security every time. I've even had a TSA agent pull it out of my bag, hold it in his hand and say, "Nothing sharp here." then put it back in my bag.

Get yourself a KeysSmart keychain. Not only will it help get your knife through, but they are incredibly handy and you might not want to go back to a regular key ring again.

Then, go on Amazon and get this knife: https://www.amazon.com/SOG-Key-Folding-Knife-KEY-101/dp/B00LUHR71W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500075053&sr=8-1&keywords=sog+key+knife

Put that knife on your new KeySmart keychain and enjoy always being able to carry a knife with you.

I don't know if it helps, but I have this next to my knife on the same keychain: https://www.amazon.com/Brewzkey-Bottle-Opener-Stainless-Steel/dp/B000RZQBCE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1500075163&sr=8-1&keywords=brewzkey

Moet & Chandon Imperial is a good choice and it's not that bad in price, either. As for a complimentary gift... CHEESE! Or if she likes pasta, make her a dinner and a have wine night :)
These are also good finds that go with wine!

This is my favorite keychain/ bottle opener. It has come in handy more times than I can say :) You are a good friend! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

u/PEWP_FARTS · 2 pointsr/beer

I love this: Since it replaced my carabiner it works great and I always have it on me!

I just went to Tröegs on Saturday and got a Nugget Nectar bottle opener that works pretty good too!

u/valar_k · 3 pointsr/wine

One of the fake Pulltaps like this one on Amazon will honestly do the trick and last quite a while. Maybe get the set of 4?

If you really want to spend more money on it, a real Pulltap will be heftier and have better nonstick material on the screw, but you have to pay quite a bit in shipping because it comes from Spain. I picked up this one a while back, and it looks great and works great.

u/glanmiregirl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I think this is both useful and interesting. It's also under $2 so if I win hopefully you can gift someone else.

Thanks for the contest!

u/bobbleheadRob · 0 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I bought wooden waiter's corkscrews. I haven't asked if they use them or not, but I bought one for myself too and I love it. It's simple and elegant. shows some class when opening a bottle of wine. I would say it's well made and a bifl item.

u/Insanity-hotpocket · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would very much like this.
It doesn't qualify for prime but it does have free shipping.

Awesome contest!

Brewzkey Bottle Opener, Stainless Steel by Brewzkey https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000RZQBCE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_dwoWAb6J2P0CV

I have had something like this on my keychain for 15 years. Never failed me and is compact like the rest of my keys. This particular one is made in USA stainless steel and well reviewed on Amazon so you probably can’t go wrong.

I’ll continue to look and see if I can find the exact one but it’s pretty much that design.

Also, HIGHLY recommend the FreeKey system.

Waiters Corkscrew by HiCoup - Premium Rosewood All-in-one Corkscrew, Bottle Opener and Foil Cutter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MSXW15E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_x5f7xbGFR4HHE

When I decided to do the same thing for myself I picked this one up. It's a fantastic key, it's a little heavy so if it's always going to be in your pocket keep that in mind and you can't pop the knife with just one hand, not a big deal, but you know how often that comes in handy. Other than that I love this key, feels very premium, I've had quite a few coworkers check it out and ask about it. It's been about 6 months using it 10 times a day minimum and it feels brand new. I'd be surprised if it doesn't last as long as I will.

$10 is a little low for a multitool but this carabiner and this flashlight are in the price range and well worth the money. Throw them on some aircraft cable key rings and they should make great gifts.

I try to find cool stuff like this for /r/INEEEEDIT, my sub. If you like stuff like this you'd probably like the subreddit too.

u/zennifer · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This bottle opener would be great for when I'm thirsty.

When I am thirsty I love to drink a nice dark craft stout. I will never drink my own piss when I am thirsty.

The carabiner is a Nite Ize carabiner with a bottle opener Link Here.
I have one and I love it. I use it to hold my keys and open beers and it works great for both!

u/TheRambleMammal · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I added 50 of these to my wishlist just so I could give them out at parties! Seems like they'd be perfect for Burning Man gifts too!

u/theonegreatx · 3 pointsr/beer

I have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/SuckUK-7910560-Church-Bottle-Opener/dp/B0000B0DKM - it's awesome and fits very nicely on my keychain (doesn't take up a huge amount of space like most bottle openers)

u/curiousguy86 · 2 pointsr/gaybros

It's a fun and easy project and you can get all the stuff on Amazon. This is the one I got, but you can find several others in designs such as your favorite sportsball teams, etc. I just picked a random cap catcher to go along with it, but you can use a magnet or really anything you want.

u/Backstop · 1 pointr/whatisthisthing

Where did you buy it?

I spend some time in touristy bars where they sell beer by the thousands and I always see the bartenders using flat openers like this. They are easy to slip into the back pocket or under an armband and provide a lot of leverage for cans or bottles to pop easily. I've seen ladies that grab up like six or eight bottles in one armload and just pop them all in two quick seconds.

u/burke_no_sleeps · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

This bottle-opener ring is super nifty for a frequent beer and handmade soda drinker like myself.

u/fantastic_disaster · 2 pointsr/bartenders

The 'Waiter's Friend' is pretty small as far as wine keys go. I have had a Chateau Laguiole rosewood key for about 6 years now and it's my favorite tool of the trade. They're expensive, but worth it in the same way that any tool of the trade is worth it... quality, longevity, design, history, etc... There are also some cheaper options, the most appealing to me is THIS one

u/CityBarman · 1 pointr/bartenders

When doing heavy beer service, bottle or can, I use a ring bottle opener on my middle finger, similar in concept to this:

Ring Bottle Opener

Some are offered in different ring sizes. Make sure you get one that actually fits YOU. It makes a difference!

Good luck!

u/officiallycoolgf · 1 pointr/preppers

They said they like beer so I ended up getting them an S-biner that doubles as a beer bottle opener, the SAS Survival Handbook, and the interesting 4-in-1 turn off wrench suggested by you shown here. I'm going to post an update when my match posts their gift to see what they thought.

u/forgorf · 2 pointsr/wine

I'll be honest, those seem unnecessary. Why not get her a nice classic wine key, like this one - which is my go to (http://www.amazon.com/Waiters-Wine-Key-Chrome-Plated-boxed/dp/B004I4KOA0/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1370539824&sr=8-10&keywords=wine+key) and then spend that money on something more useful.

Someone gave me the SOG Kilowatt, it's ok. Definitely not great on the job, and the shape of the belt clip causes it to get caught on things often. I would stay away from it. u/darkehawk14 · 1 pointr/woodworking

I use one at school and love it. And it have been around for several years. Meaning, in a school, its pretty bullet proof.

At home, I use a DeWalt. Live that one too.

One thing, though, too look for in a 1/4 sheet sander: How to change the paper. That PC, without having a paint can opener, is a pain in the ass to change. Used a screw driver for a while, which works, but not well. That can opener really makes it much easier. However, the others, with a bar that hooks down, are easier still.

Opened a bottle of 1977 vintage port this past weekend. Took three tries to get get all the cork. I'd say it held up pretty well.

I wonder if those CorkPops would work well with these old corks?

Suggestions for improving your pocket experience, based on my experience with trying to minimize the amount of stuff in my pockets:

  1. Try using a smaller pen. In particular, the Fisher Bullet Space Pen is incredibly small, but when the cap is attached to the back of the pen, it becomes full sized.
You'd probably have to do something similar for your stylus (although what is a stylus useful for on an iPhone?)

  2. Get a carabiner for your keys and move them to a belt loop, if you don't have many keys.

  3. Get a smaller wallet. This is especially feasible if your wallet mainly just contains cards; there are a number of minimalist wallet solutions available; the one I ended up using was the TGT 2.0, which was based off using a rubber band (and is generally only useful for keeping your cards together).
But of course, you have to pick one that works for you, and none of them will hold coins, and most don't hold bills well either.

I also wouldn't really trust those door locking / unlocking apps; they're generally finicky and require trading security for minor convenience. Not to mention what happens if your phone gets stolen. Or runs out of battery. Or the power goes out. And, of course, you're keyless at that point :|

That’s a wine opener that looks like it would work well. I definitely like the real knife blade. But damn that’s steep. From the pic, I’d have guessed $50-60.

At $150, I’d rather own a $120 knife and three of Pulltaps-Double-Hinged-Waiters-Corkscrews https://www.amazon.com/Pulltaps-Double-Hinged-Waiters-Corkscrew-Stainless/dp/B0055OGPWS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1492008756&sr=8-1&keywords=pulltaps+double+hinged+corkscrew&linkCode=ll1&tag=fwgearbestcorkscrew-20&linkId=6a60095c742651446437761b139268ba

u/reverendj1 · 5 pointsr/Homebrewing

What /u/chino_brews said is exactly right. I have done the same thing minus the penny many times when I had gushers. I just want to add a few things.

  1. Use a big bottle opener. Preferably a bar blade. This will give you the leverage and ability to just burp the cap. You don't want anything that you have to futz with at all.

  2. You aren't removing the cap. You are just lifting it enough that gas can escape and then letting it back down when the foam hits the cap. The cap should reseat itself fine if you did it right, but keep the capper handy.

  3. This isn't a one and done thing. You will probably need to do this several times to get them down to the right pressure. IME, you need to wait at least a couple hours for the pressure to equalize before you can do it again. Doing it about 5-7 times should be a good starting point, but be careful of gushers when opening them still, as you won't know for sure that you are on point, or that the same amount of gas escaped from each one.
u/Kiowa707 · 2 pointsr/gifs

Bottle opener.

Magnet. (preferably 25-50lbf pull force)

Douglas Fir 2x4 (only need a foot of lumber)

Cutting tools I used are:

  • Drill press w/ boring drill bit sized to your magnet's diameter.

  • Handsaw, or table saw that can cut your 2x4 to size.

  • Powered drill to mount your bottle opener to 2x4

  • For aesthetics, use sand paper, wood stainer and wax to make your shitty 2x4 look good and water resistant.

It's pretty simple. You just have to have a positive mindset of finishing it no matter what.

Source: I did a lot of woodworking in the past.

http://www.amazon.com/Pulltex-Pulltaps-Double-Hinged-Corkscrew-Original/dp/B0055OGPWS

What you're looking for:

  • Double hinged fulcrum. See the metallic part, how there's one hinge at the base and a second hinge in the middle? That gives you a metric fuckton more leverage than you can get from any other design that I've seen that isn't some $200 countertop appliance/medieval torture device.
  • All metal. If it's built out of plastic... yeah, that happens.
  • Serrated blade. Other people like the smooth blade, but I don't know why; you're using glass a cutting surface, the blade will dull. Quickly. And it doesn't need to be sharp, a serrated blade can simply grab and tear the foil. A smooth blade will be superior the first two or three times you open a bottle, but never again.
  • Actually decent quality construction. Don't get something made in China. In the cheap ones, nothing lines up, the joins are all loose, it feels wrong in your hand, etc.

I'm thinking about buying like 10 of these and handing them out to all my friends with shitty bottle openers. I was at a party at my friend's house last night, someone asked me to open a bottle of wine, because no one knew how to do it, and I'm "the wine guy" and I look in the drawer and there a bunch of those insufferable wing ones. It didn't go well.

In the meantime, grab some pliers, untwist the worm maybe one full rotation, and put some back into it. You'll probably spill some wine.
u/wyrdone42 · 1 pointr/woodworking

Lots of places online sell them. Amazon, Northern Brewer, etc.

Shop around for the style you want.

u/petrus_and_coke · 31 pointsr/BuyItForLife

The Pulltap's "waiter's friend" like this one is the way to go. The two key features are the teflon-coated worm, which can be replaced when the teflon coating wears out, and the two-step "foot" the you use for leverage to pull the cork. It requires only marginally more effort than the Rabbit style and all of its various copies thanks to the double action. I've been in the wine business for more than 5 years and this is what virtually everyone in the field uses every day.

The Rabbits have several moving parts that tend to wear out and break after awhile. Rabbits also don't work very well with synthetic corks- they have a nasty habit of punching them into the bottle. The winged style and and its ilk usually have very thick worms which can shred the cork and cause it to crumble in to the bottle. This is particularly a problem with corks on older bottles which tend to be more delicate. It probably goes without saying, but those battery powered and gas-pressured openers are complete gimmicks and not worth the hassle or the money.

My car key uses RFID so that always stays in my front left pocket or my man purse. Work keys stay in my man purse because that ALWAYS goes with me to work. House keys stay in a single key ring that only has four keys, mail key, gate key, door key, bottle opener- these always go in my back left pocket. Whenever I go to sit, I pull them out and lay them on the table.
