26. Prestige By Coutale Sommelier - The French Patented Spring-Loaded Double Lever Waiters Corkscrew and Wine Bottle Opener (Rosewood)

    Features:
  • FRAME AND HANDLE IN SOLID STAINLESS STEEL – Our Prestige Rosewood by Coutale Sommelier is built on a base of Solid Stainless Steel. From here, a slab of hand-cut Rosewood is affixed to the frame via stainless steel rivets. The end product? A corkscrew that is as aesthetically gorgeous as it is useful. Made of practical lines, The Prestige Rosewood by Coutale Sommelier is as comfortable opening 100’s of bottles a night as it is on display at home.
  • STAINLESS STEEL GROOVED WORM – The Prestige line of corkscrews by Coutale Sommelier features a stainless steel grooved worm. From Season 8: Easy Skillet Suppers

NOTE:
For the winner by OXO THIS is the model shown in the test results and THIS is the newer model. ~OP

TESTING NOTES

WINNER:
Magnetic Locking Can Opener by Oxo - $19.99

> This can opener was intuitive to use and easy to attach and detach from cans. It was "comfortable," "very smooth," and very efficient in operation. Because it is a traditional opener, this model leaves a lid with sharp edges (its only downfall), but minimizes potential danger with a magnet that allows "neat and safe" lid disposal.

3 others were also RECOMMENDED:

  • Kuhn Rikon Slim Safety Lidlifter - $11.95

    > Testers praised the handy "change in feeling" once the can was completely open. The "dishwasher-safe claim was spot-on: There were no changes in performance or appearance after several wash cycles. A few testers has mild complaints about the "awkward position" of the oversized turning knob, resulting in a slight demerit in the performance rating.

  • Progressive International Safety I-Can Opener - $12.79

    > The unique ratchet cutting wheel mechanism was "easy to operate" and comfortable, but was "hard to know when finished." Pincers disposed of the cut lid safely. For some testers, the instructions for this opener were "not obvious," even with visuals on the packaging.

  • Good Cook 4-1 HT Safe Can Opener - $9.99

    > "Clearly written instructions" and "smooth gears" made this opener easy and efficient as first use. Also, testers appreciated the "perceptible change in feeling" when the can opener had rounded the entire can. This model lost a few points for not having a lid-gripper.

2 others were RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS:

  • Zyliss Safe Edge Can Opener - $14.95
  • Miu CanDo Safety Can Opener - $9.99

    2 others were NOT RECOMMENDED:

  • Chef'n EZ Squeeze 1-Handed Can Opener
  • CIA Masters Collections Side Can Opener

A lot of my friends have the waiter Corckscrews, and by amazon reviews, this one seems to be the most loved and most durable:
http://www.amazon.com/Creuset-WT-110-Screwpull-Waiters-Corkscrew/dp/B000GA311Y/ref=pd_sim_k_14

But I find this to be more for waiters and not for people at home. Not the easiest to handle.

I myself have a full steel wing corkscrew that I got from my parents. They don't make things like this anymore. It's all metal alloy and easy to handle, there is no way it will break.

The best I can find on amazon with some heft and weight and most likely not to break is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Zyliss-Wing-Corkscrew-Made-Alloy/dp/B002O3Y7H8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324790499&sr=8-1

EDIT for LEVER and Rabbit corkscrews:
If you want something really classy to impress your friends, you could also try "rabbit corkscrews" or lever corkscrews. They both cost about the same, and at this point in the price range, (20$ for cheap to 50+ for nice) you may as well go for the full stand lever cork screw. This is basically one of those magic machines where you put in the wine and use the cool lever and pop you're done.

http://www.amazon.com/Trudeau-Trulever-Corkscrew-Set-Tin/dp/B0026RH6A2/ref=sr_1_10?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1324790693&sr=1-10

But really, I would suggest you go to the nearest second hand store and look around in their kitchen section and pick out a wing and a waiter's. They are both very cheap and if you find that full metal alloy one, you will not need anything else for a very long time. I have all three at home and I find myself using my wing the most, since my rabbit doesn't come in a stand, so I have to take it out of it's box, and then yada yada yada...

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you're having a great one.

What's made me happiest this week is that it was the end of this semester! I'm ready for a break. My favorite food of the moment is chili dogs since that's what I'm currently eating. :)

This bottle opener would be cool.

i'm pretty much with the crowd of get a decent 2-step one like this: https://www.amazon.com/Prestige-Rosewood-Coutale-Sommelier-Spring-Loaded/dp/B00659W9UE

great call on the durand, but that's really for old bottles where the cork is going to cause problems. you can approximate that, however, with just about any ah-so. https://www.amazon.com/DeVine-Wine-Opener-Vintage-Bottles/dp/B00TNSV4DC/ref=sr_1_7?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1537730169&sr=1-7&keywords=ah+so+wine+opener

but as for actual best, it's gotta be the Code 38. Absolutely a stunning piece and great engineering. if you're opening a ton of bottles all night, this is what you'd want. https://www.code38.com/

u/PA2SK · 13 pointsr/EDC

New addition to my keychain. It's a US army issue can opener first developed back in the 40's. They will last pretty much forever, stories abound of guys still carrying (and using) their grandfathers P-38 which was passed on to them. It's super compact, it pretty much disappears on a keychain and it can be used for a number of other purposes - flat blade screwdriver, scraper, the blade is perfect for cleaning under your nails or opening packages. The name comes from the 38 times you have to puncture a can with it to open it. There is a larger version called the P-51 which is a little heavier duty and easier to operate, but either will open a can easily.

Amazon sells two of them here for three bucks, or you can get a twenty pack here for ten bucks. I bought the twenty pack and scattered some around the house and in my vehicles, figure I will never have to worry about not having a can opener again.

This has some good ideas of how to "Adulting So Hard"...

So here's my suggestions:

u/Analytica0 · 2 pointsr/bartenders

This one may work:

Waiters Corkscrew HiCoup

I have that one but I also use this one quite a bit and regularly give them to other new bartenders. The foil cutter is amazing for when you work super large events and have to power open mass bottles of wine within minutes:

If his favoriate game is Omaha hi/lo then he knows what he is doing, even if he’s an old geezer playing limit. There aren’t many mixed games/Omaha books out there.

Just get him poker swag. Something like nice plastic Copag or Kem cards would be more thoughtful and innocent on your part without having to endure too much agony to decipher what’s what in the poker world.

https://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-BO03-Casino-Bottle-Opener/dp/B004UOL6Z0

Or a seat cushion for the novelty sake of thinking about the comforts of his live table play. Maybe a cool chip protector for him to use. I’d seriously avoid getting him poker literature (especially that it could be rendered redundant upon receipt) if you don’t know what you’re doing.

u/pmags · 2 pointsr/Ultralight

P38 or P51 can opener. Open up the delicious, scrumptious, and absolutely important cans of Hatch green chilis the first night out (mentioned in another reply).

But it opens boxes for resupply, tightens screws on poles, clears out iced up bindings on skis, will open a beer bottle in a pinch when you buy some local craft beer (that has not transition to cans), scrapes out a pot, etc. etc. etc.

The P51 is easier to use if slightly larger than the P38. I tried weighing them once. They did not show up on a digital scale.

Where to get? Local surplus store, hardware store, or Amazon (of course). A 20 pack of 10 ea of the P51 and P38 can be purchased for $12. https://www.amazon.com/U-S-Opener-Pack-Military-Issue/dp/B00DMSQT5M (non-affiliate link). These are the US made Shelby ones that last. At this price, no reason to buy the knock-off brands.

Besides outdoor use, it is always on my keychain and comes in handy more than I would think.

u/andtheodor · 7 pointsr/wine

Well, since you asked for well-designed, I think the rabbit style is awful. I usually use a double hinged Pulltap. The Laguiole is a classic version of this design that spans a large price range. The Code 38 is an ultra luxury engineered version of this. If you're opening older wines, an Ah So can be valuable. The Durand is a neat hybrid of corkscrew and Ah So that can be useful for very old friable corks. The Cork Pops is another very useful tool for dealing with old corks. Finally, there is always the shoe method.

u/chjmor · 3 pointsr/bartenders

As I mentioned a few days ago.... Code-38 is the best. However, quite cost prohibitive for most (although they are hands down the best I've ever used).

http://www.amazon.com/Screwpull-Le-Creuset-Waiters-Corkscrew/dp/B000GA311Y

Was my go-to for years.

u/thiosk · 6 pointsr/SpaceXMasterrace

Excellent question! I'm Jeff Who. In the government, if you want to move money to black ops, you use loopholes in regulations for federal contractors to shift money between divisions outside federal oversight.

Amazon uses secret products that if you buy them, it funnels profits directly to my BO. The BO project is funded entirely by sales of this product.

u/max75 · 1 pointr/woodworking

For my bottle opener projects, I have used the following ones from Amazon. I like the shiny look and they seem to be just fine quality-wise, but at $10-$11 each, they're definitely not what I would consider cheap. Be sure to post pics when you're done!

u/timmighty · 3 pointsr/balisong

Looks like a vintage ekco wine opener, those things are hard to find. Nice score!

If you're shooting for a new trainer, this is as good as they come. Chrome!

Tried a balisong can opener, was pretty crap. 0/10 would flip again. Stick with the fancy chrome trainer I linked you to.

u/das-katerer · 1 pointr/EDC

I like the Rabbit, it's not particularly sexy but it's solidly made and cheap enough I wouldn't be sad losing it. Pulltaps are the classic, I like the over-hand bottle opener and curved blade but I've never used one for long enough to say if the construction is worth the money.

u/RodneyRodnesson · 4 pointsr/BuyItForLife

u/wharpua · 4 pointsr/BBQ

Very nicely done. I've never seen those as angled shelf supports - where'd you come across those?

Also, a suggestion: add one of these. Ever since I put one on my table it's gotten a ton of use.

u/DevastatorIIC · 3 pointsr/wine

First off, how was it stored? Wines like to be stored on their side, in a dark place, with a low temperature fluctuation, and somewhat cool.

What state is the bottle in? Any leakages? How full is it?

Also, what is the winery? It'd have to be a pretty decent bottle of wine to begin with to last 28 years.

If you decide to open it and try it, look into a cork puller or a cork pusher, because a traditional corkscrew would probably destroy the cork, and you'd have to strain it out :)

u/masonba · 2 pointsr/wine

This probably won't be the most popular one but I really like it. I use it at the winery every day:
http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-Coutale-Sommelier-Inlay-Handle/dp/B00659W9UE

u/santafemax · 4 pointsr/wine

I'm a fan of the Coutale Pocket. $25 bucks, well made, nice weight, double hinged, sturdy (I'm going on 18 months with my current key.) The downside: it has a serrated blade. I'm with you in preferring a sharp blade, so I took a file and sharpened it. Took less than 30 minutes and now I have exactly the wine key I want.

I've found that screw-pull style openers are much easier, and they're pretty cheap. the whole thing only requires one screwing motion, where waiter's corkscrews require screwing+leverage+pulling. http://www.amazon.com/Screwpull-S1015-31-Table-Corkscrew-Black/dp/B0001UZPY0/

Many wine keys have some type of serration on the foil cutter. That might not be an option. These are my favorites, but these are cheap and will serve you well too.

Try the Ganji Kankiri https://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Can-Opener-Ganji-Kankiri/dp/B001TV6A7G
Two pieces of metal. No gears or twisting parts - just a handle and a blade. Incredibly easy to clean and use. Sure, the can lid can get a bit jagged after, but I know I will not be buying a new can opener for the rest of my life.

I (full-time bartender at high volume wine bar) use this double-hinged wine key from Hi-Coup . The Pakka wood is pretty but they have lots of options!

u/shannajw · 8 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have an older version of this Good Cook one: http://www.amazon.com/Good-Cook-Classic-Can-Opener/dp/B001CD1HJC/ref=sr_1_2?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1456885764&sr=1-2&keywords=good+cook+can+opener

I've had it for well over ten years. It actually unseals the can rather than cutting it, so no sharp edges and you can set the lid back on if you want to stick the can in the fridge for a day.

u/agha0013 · 6 pointsr/DiWHY

This is basically what those CO2 bottle openers do, except they use food grade clean CO2 instead of some grimy bike pump, and they probably cost more than a good bike pump.

I use these almost exclusively; I have one my great grandfather bought in germany after the war that I use every day.
