Alright.. hear me out on this.. maybe you need something a little more extreme... Here's Linus explaining this a little better than i can.

this is a three pack of Ubiquiti UniFi commercial wireless AC access points for $182.00 They are newer models, but essentially the same ones Linus reviewed.

These aren't Wireless routers, they are just access points. They don't provide the addresses to your devices or any kind of management beyond actual WiFi stuff. These are designed to allow seamless transitioning however, so for example if you have a phone that allows WiFi calling, you should be able to walk from your basement to your 2nd floor without the call dropping.

The actual management like firewall and DHCP could be done through your existing Airport Extreme, just disable the WiFi radio. You could also get a PoE capable switch, which will remove the need for power injectors.

These are powered remotely with something called PoE or 'power over ethernet' meaning that you can use the included power injectors to feed them power from where the Airport extreme is, or you could get a new switch like this one that supplies PoE. PoE can also be used with some other devices like IP phones and security cameras.

Ether way, your going to have to configure the Access Points to be the same and enable seamless mode.

This setup should be more than enough to supply your devices with bandwidth and provide more than enough signal to help prevent battery drain on battery powered devices.

Now, I live in a single story 2 bed 1 bath apartment. So as much as I want the setup above, it's overkill. I have this one, It has pretty great range and might do the job. The only things to remember, is that with a single router your device has to transmit with more power to respond to the router. This means that your phone may hear the AP just fine, but it has to "scream" at your router for it to respond. This means that your battery operated devices like your cell phone will deplete faster the further you are from the AP.

My only complaints are: sometimes it "forgets" to turn the guest WiFi on, there aren't many smart apps, the Android app is really slow and might as well just connect to the much faster web page, The speed seems to drop to G speeds at times requiring a reboot, reboot time is very slow up to two minutes, the installation of Twonky media server is incompatible with the Twonky media app for Roku.

thank you for the list

I am still researching DORI and differences between cameras, but from what I gathered so far here is what I need:

  • blue iris $70 (with a phone app)
  • pc (since it only supports windows) likely i7-6700 something like this
  • PoE switch: something like this
  • router, I have an old lynksys with dd-wrt which should do it
  • several very long ethernet cables with some couplers
  • most likely also a UPS
  • ONVIF, PoE cameras

the last bit I am still looking at. I am not ready to spend several hundred dollars per camera (one of your examples is Dahua 2MP Starlight which seems to be super expensive). While I understand it might be much better than the rest, I'd like to see if I can be in a $50 to $100 dollar range per camera. Is there any such cameras you can recommend?

I can see some (ONVIF, PoE): Hikvision 4MP, ONWOTE 5MP, ONWOTE, 4X Optical Zoom Autofocus, Amcrest ProHD, GW Security 5, JideTech PTZ, etc. but I am not sure how to gauge the quality.

Have you considered setting up a Zoneminder server? Fantastic self hosted option. Free, open source software, and only gets better if you use the h254 storage branch. That branch will keep your events as video files and supports motion detection OOB.

Theres a long list of supported cameras, some as cheap as $40/ea. My home CCTV system is based on zoneminder and have been very happy with it for the last several years.

ZoneMinder: https://zoneminder.com/

H264 branch PPA: https://launchpad.net/~iconnor/+archive/ubuntu/zoneminder-feature-h264-videostorage

These cams are supported, and sport wireless functionality, weatherproof, as well as IR all for a little over $40: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J0V6BWA/ref=twister_B01M4R40QH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&coliid=I1JN5ZPWJXZM5A&colid=1XRRHEIGE9S0A

You can also check out this compatibility list for some more ideas if you're looking for some more robust cams: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Hardware_Compatibility_List#Network_Cameras

edit:
Oh, theres also a killer desktop and mobile app called ZMninja that allows you to view live streams and events on the go. Its more or less been dubbed the official Zm app at this point: http://pliablepixels.github.io/

Some questions: How far away from you balcony is the area to be monitored? What level of detail do you want to be able to see? It doesn't sound too far (less than 50 feet) and you don't need to see faces. If that's correct, you can get a bullet camera with on-board storage. Something with motion detection will save you a lot of time searching unless there's a lot of movement in the area. I'll also assume you'll want to check the video from your computer. I'm not a fan of wireless cameras (I prefer the reliability of wired) but it sounds like it may be the easiest solution for you. Something like the camera in the link may work well. tps://smile.amazon.com/Reolink-Wireless-4-Megapixel-2560x1440-RLC-410WS/dp/B019MMABCI/ref=sr_1_13?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1482075913&sr=1-13&keywords=bullet+camera+SD+card&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_three_browse-bin%3A6012218011

I had Wyze cameras and had 3D printed outdoor housings but the quality wasn't great at night after our last run in.

Went Ubiquiti. Three G3-FLEX cameras (four tonight) and ran some CAT6 with a powerline adapter for the camera you see above. I'm runing the UniFi Video software on an old Mac mini with a 5TB USB HD but I'm strongly considering one of their CloudKey Gen 2+ to dedicate specific hardware for the cameras/network.

The interface is fantastic, the camera quality is fantastic (they also offer a 4K camera though $$$), and security hardened. I like the idea of them being wired to take that busy constant video traffic off of wifi.

Edit: added links

I got these for $50 and they work pretty well, they’re a pain to set up but once you get it going they’re great.

Zmodo Wireless Security Camera System (2 Pack) Smart HD WiFi IP Cameras with Night Vision https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FCJNX46/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SRR4Db0Z2BNZQ

u/ganjjo · 1 pointr/techsupport

I would buy a day/night IP camera. Im guessing that your PC is not near the location where you need a camera. IP cameras are also wifi so you don't have to run a dedicated cable. You want a night camera in case he decides to throw a Molotov cocktail at night.

I've used lots of trendnet cameras in the past and they are shit but their support was OK and replaced them. Sometimes you just need to power cycle them. Just make sure , whatever you buy, that they have an app that you can install on a PC or MAC and record. Also, not all night vision is the same, check how far it can see in the dark. https://www.amazon.com/Wansview-Wireless-Security-Weatherproof-VisionW2-Black/dp/B01J0V6C2Y/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1500066049&sr=1-7&keywords=ip+camera . that claims 67ft and they have both 720p and 1080p. 720p should be fine. I dont know if that's a good camera or not but it has decent reviews.

I would be an asshole after some dhead did that on my property. I would place half a dozen highly visible camera facing towards his property.

u/chriscareycode · 1 pointr/homedefense

Thanks Wolfcry0, I came here to say this. I also run sv3c and love that camera. It would be so great if it supported audio also, which it does not. It's a great camera though for the price! Good night vision, tons of options.

Here is the Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0776S8N8X/

On this model, make sure to go into Configuration -> Network -> P2P and turn OFF the P2P option. Its a bit sketchy how it connects out with this feature. Once that is off, it does not phone home or make any outbound connections other than NTP (clock) which I set to my own NTP server

u/MadSciTech · 2 pointsr/homedefense

Here is the exact camera i have. But if you can find one thats better frame rate and higher res than thats even better.

Amcrest ProHD Outdoor 1080P POE Bullet IP Security Camera - IP67 Weatherproof, 1080P (1920 TVL), IP2M-842E (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BN1FEQE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_DA7czbXSEM8R4

It's as close as i could have it to the road, right on the shoulder. I find that if you just watch the video you cant read the plate. But when i review the video frame by frame there will either be a frame where i can read the plate perfectly or between a couple frames i can read it.

As for reading them at night, no luck there. I have considered setting up a small spot light that will illuminate the back of vehicles and I'm almost positive that will solve the problem. However, so far almost every sketchy vehicle i have seen came through during the day. For home burglary that makes sense, hit homes while people are at work.

u/drnick5 · 1 pointr/homedefense

I researched these for my father who is installing some cams at his business.

Hikvision seems to make good equipment, but I've read some issues getting them set up. they don't provide support, and I've seen some say all the instructions they received were in Chinese.

I've used TON of the ubiquiti Wireless stuff, but never the cameras. From what I can tell, the cameras are as easy to set up as the wireless. Their support isn't so great either, but they have a lot of into on their forums. Ubiquiti also gives you free camera software you can load on a computer to record it all and play back at a later date. From what I've read, all the processing is done on the camera itself, so its pretty low on resources.

You can also use either of these cameras with Blue iris.

i found this 3 pack of cameras on Amazon for $399. Which is what my father ordered just last week.

u/someguydontmindme · 3 pointsr/sysadmin

Not sure how viable this is since you live in Brazil, but I was able to find some pretty decent (and affordable!) cameras on Amazon Good luck OP

u/GotMyOrangeCrush · 2 pointsr/videosurveillance

At a high level, three or four HD IP bullet cams and a security NVR will run around $600 or so.

Simplest thing is if you can run wired Ethernet which will supply power an data connection for cameras. Bullet cams provide better night vision while dome cams are more vandal-proof and difficult to knock out of position.

u/MaIakai · 2 pointsr/homedefense

It's doable but pushing it.

  • $44 BI on Amazon.
  • $10 BI Mobile App $10
  • $35 POE 6-8 Port Injector (Or get a POE switch) Ebay
  • $20 Cheap Gigabit Switch (Or get a POE switch)

    Est ~ $104

Tons of affordable camera options from $35-100. Not all are great quality but here are some. There are cheaper options.

  • $100 ($50 each) 2x RTech Dome 1080P Amazon
  • $270 ($90 each) 3x Amcrest Bullet Outdoor 1080P Amazon

    Est ~ $370

    Running Total $474

Cat5e for the POE isn't expensive. You can always step up to better cameras. The computer to run BI would be the most and honestly, a cheap used machine can do it. Just turn off Overlay in BlueIris.

Or skip blue iris and get a NVR solution, there are tons of them out there.
u/Lord_Snax · 2 pointsr/homedefense

I use a Wansview W3 (X Series). Its an outdoor IP camera that runs 720p at 30fps. It is crystal clear in the daylight and works well at night.

The IR or inferred LEDs on the camera are focused towards the center, but lights up my drive way very well at night, and I can always see my neighbor's cat when he was in my yard.

If you need any software to run the cameras, I use Blue Iris. It costs about $65 to purchase and can be used for 14 days before purchasing the software. However, the program iSpyConnect (A.K.A. iSpy) is free to use, but if you need to view the cameras remotely, meaning you need to access the cameras while not at home, iSpy requires a monthly subscription to do so. Blue Iris can do this for free.

u/TheVulkanMan · 2 pointsr/wyzecam

I think spending that much for extra "protection" just isn't worth it, the cam is $20, and everything you are talking about would run you $200+.

For that amount of cash, might as well get a dedicated security cam, and those are actually meant for security situations, unlike the Wyze cam, which just aren't up to the job.

If you still want to use Wyze, then mount it inside, and point it outside, and get IR flood lights.

If you still don't want to go that route, you can try other cams, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Surveillance-Waterproof-Security-Detection/dp/B07789DM4R/ at least it is rated to be weatherproof, and for outdoors use.

So, your cat is going to be fine. But to ease YOUR anxiety, get some cheap webcams so you can check in and feel better that your cat is fine. I use these:

https://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-Wireless-Security-Camera-Cameras/dp/B07FCJNX46/

They will send alerts to your phone when they see movement so you can get proactive alerts every so often that your cat is absolutely okay.

u/bphilly_cheesesteak · 1 pointr/homeautomation

We use 8 of these with Blue Iris recording at 720p 25-30fps, then 2 of these recording at 1080p 30fps (during the day and 10fps at night). . I use the Blue Iris plugin for HomeSeer to monitor whether a camera has dropped offline or something similar like that. You can also set it to send you notifications based on motion/etc (either through Blue Iris itself or through HomeSeer). We also use DoorBird for our doorbell that allows us to get push notifications and talk to the person at the door but also have the (720p) RTSP stream live to Blue Iris as well.

The PC running Blue Iris is this. Somehow the i5 inside works perfectly with only medium-high CPU-usage, even with 10 total HD cameras.

u/strixtle · 3 pointsr/orangecounty

I have the Eufy cams and love them. No subscription fees, very robust options, more options being added with updates (still waiting on Google Home integration though). But so far been really pleased with them and also the door sensors they have as well. Ditching ADT shortly.

If your requirement is to not use cheap chinese junk electronics, you've got to give up most of everything on the planet. But I completely agree with you that the price of a POE RPi hat should have been marginal at best, considering you can buy complete POE camera's for 30 bucks.

These are just over your budget of $50 at $59.99, but I just upgraded a few of my 1MP and 2MP PoE cameras to these 5MP PoE ones:

I've only had them a few months, but I've been quite happy with them so far. They're running into BlueIris which runs in a VM on my server.

This one has a lot of answered questions and extremely detailed setup instructions from reviewers:
https://www.amazon.com/Wansview-Wireless-Security-Weatherproof-VisionW2-Black/dp/B01J0V6C2Y/ref=gbps_tit_s-3_287c_d3d79ba3?smid=A2HS750VI2UUZ8&pf_rd_p=05ffb6af-f379-4d0d-9cd0-72d74708287c&pf_rd_s=slot-3&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=gb_main&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=JB4CYG80X8KXQSA7T1WC

Also, many, many options on Ebay. Suddenly, they're just all over the place, and the features are better than the cameras we all had for years at a much lower price. It's just a matter of choosing what works for you and determining which sellers look best.

I use these for Ethernet to my far away from the router cameras:

NETGEAR Powerline adapter 2000 Mbps (2) Gigabit Ethernet Ports with Passthrough + Extra Outlet (PLP2000) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0778Y6K6N/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_i_lsP5AbG5D0JQZ

They work amazingly.

I use this for the camera:

Foscam HD 1080P Outdoor WiFi Security Camera – Weatherproof IP66 Bullet / 2.1MP IP Wireless Surveillance Camera System with iOS/Android App, Night Vision up to 65ft, and More (FI9900P) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011US2ADK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ktP5Ab94GF4PK

And I use blue Iris for local recording/monitoring and I use Dropbox to store 30 days of 1 second resolution video (just record to the shared dropbox folder)

This is the kind of image I get at night (camera is mounted to my roof soffet and cables go to my attic to an extension cable with a splitter for the camera and the Ethernet adapter)

I recommend this Jennov POE camera. I bought one to replace a $120 Hikvision that looks almost exactly the same. The picture quality is very good. I will be buying more when I find time to wire a couple more up. $36.90-$40

Edit: I use these with Blue Iris.

I'm not a huge expert, but this is the one I'd buy.

FOSCAM FI9900P 1080P HD Wireless IP Camera - ( > IP Cameras) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B011US2ADK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_izcBxbQJ5Q9F3

I can't specifically see if it has mic/speaker, but the cable connections look hopeful.

one of these should do it. 4MP resolution is going to be great for forensic footage. Just grab a 64gb SD card for local recording.

Maybe I just really don't know what I'm doing in setting up my switch. I have a PoE 10/100 already but I thought it didn't output enough power.

u/tornadoRadar · 9 pointsr/HomeNetworking

I've done that exact setup.

2 of these.

1 of these for within the barn

1 of these for inside the house:

If you want wifi out there you can do a LR:
https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-UniFi-UAP-AC-LR-Single-Version/dp/B01609AF22/

Cameras you can use a variety. but even at 4k resolution with h264 you're at 75 mbps with 4 cameras at 30fps.

one camera option:

edit: i also suggest a battery backup to clean power up in remote buildings. esp if they're old

Look for camera's with ONVIF.

Maybe something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Security-Ethernet-Surveillance-Waterproof-Infrared/dp/B07KSWNDXV/

Will allow local control if/when you want, plus can be tied into various cloud services. Even do both at the same time.

I'm close to trying one of these reolink cams

I've read a few reviews, one on reddit, and it looks pretty decent, but no first hand knowledge myself...

u/brzcory · 3 pointsr/CCW

IP cameras (digital video instead of old blurry-ass CCTV) can be had for ~$40 a pop. They just wire into your router, and are networked to a PC for recording.

Be aware though: you gotta set the passwords and keep up on your internet security with them. I've got mine on their own wired network that's completely detached from the internet (it's easier to do than it sounds, since mine are all hardwired anyway with POE, they all run to a switch which plugs into a PC that's just plugging away in the attic).

u/darktor · 1 pointr/homedefense

Here is the one I use

http://www.amazon.com/Foscam-FI9900P-Outdoor-Wireless-Camera/dp/B011US2ADK/

Has IR, can view from PC/Mac/iOS/Andriod, can save recording via FTP, cloud, SD card, etc. when motion is detected. I think it's $60/yearly for cloud recording. Can get a notice when motion is detected on phone or email and then view live from phone or computer.

u/ortusdux · 1 pointr/reddit.com

Hide an web/security cam. If there is adequate lighting, you can use a nice low-light cam. Nice because they are cheap and usb. You can use some nice free software to capture motion. It looks like a piece of cardboard in the window with a small hole and a webcam taped to the inside would work out. You can use an IR one, but sometimes the bulbs around the cam glow orange, which kind of make it a bulls-eye. Buy at a store and plan on returning it if it glows. Make sure the pics get a date/time stamp. Call the cops. Trespassing is a crime. Taking photos on your property is not. The proof will be rather concrete.

u/Losritenour · 2 pointsr/homeowners

I just bought a few of these cameras to put up around the outside of my house after some bastard stole my flag and flagpole off my porch in the night. Relatively easy to use and not bad of a price for the quality.

Do you purchase the item(s) then charge upon delivery? How much do you charge for say a $500 item?

I rock the Hosafe 720p Cams. $35 and mine came with the adapter to do POE. I use Blue Iris software with them.

u/squidz0rz · 6 pointsr/buildapcsales

I have no idea why anybody would use this for a security camera when you can get an actual mountable camera (this is actually a 2-pack for the same price as the webcam) that works with Alexa and GA for the same price/cheaper.
