Sure thing!

Bass: By far the most immediately noticeable difference. The notes that fell into the lower register were thicker when coming through the Mac. I'd call it fuller, but that often comes with the connotation that it was louder or became more overwhelming, which was not the case here.

Imaging: Whereas before I could pick a general area for a particular sound's "source" -- center, off center, at the speakers, just inside/outside the speakers -- it had now become a far more distinct imaging (e.g., the drums sound like they are right there, the piano is a few inches above that). The one negative point I found however, when listening to Portishead's Roseland NYC Live album on the Thorens was that the audience applause fell much further into the background. Perhaps that is a more accurate reproduction, but I missed it sounding like I was in the middle of the crowd.

Mids-Highs: Where I really took note of this was while listening to Queen's A Night at the Opera. Freddie Mercury's voice was so so much more present. As I cycled through a few other songs with power vocalists on them the experience with Queen held very true across them all. High notes were also very tight.

Range: This took a little more to notice, but once I did, I was in love. It seems that my Marantz' internal amp had been cutting off the extra highs, and the extra lows. I was hearing things higher in the upper register, and lower in the lower register -- and to no insignificant degree -- than I had ever before. It wasn't like hearing the bass note extend out a hair lower, I felt like I had gained an entire new frequency band on both ends.

Tone: Here's where I'm a little mixed, and it's something that I never thought I'd be mixed about. The music reproduction was surreal in its accuracy, which is what I always imagined to be what I wanted. Even though the MC250 was tuned to be a more warm tube-like solid state amp, I began to understand what people mean by MacIntosh being almost sterile. I only got the sense of this a few times, but it was there, and was enough to make my ear to ear grin, when considering the other benefits, slip ever so slightly. However, with this sterile accuracy, what I lost in warmth and that certain je ne sais quoi, I was able to gain through hearing absolutely every damn thing that was happening when they recorded whatever track I was listening to. The prime example of this came from a run through of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" (If you haven't heard it, stop reading and go listen. . . now). Not only could you hear the saxophonist's breath rushing through his instrument (something which I could hear before with the Marantz), you very literally could hear him place his lips on the reed, and when his mouth would release from it just before taking a breath. I half expected to be able to discern his heartbeat. Whatever you wanted to hear on the track, it was there, and easily isolated by your ears. Listening to old favorites quickly became a game of listening for things I didn't hear before, then zeroing in on it to find out what it was.

Overall: Holy SHIT!

TL/DR: With a Mac solid state, you lose a bit of the warmth and je ne sais quoi that comes with a great tube amp, but in exchange everything is fuller/tighter, and its accuracy would let you hear if a fly shits in the recording studio and enjoy it in its full sonic brilliance.

Here's an overview of the setup I used:

Oh sure, look it up. If I were smart, that's what I would have done. ;-)

To save other people the trouble:

Pablo Honey

The Bends

OK Computer

Kid A - due to the lack of singles (and B-sides), this might actually be the worst collector's edition, which is amazing because this album is awesome awesome.

Amnesiac

Hail To The Thief

In Rainbows

I guess it almost comes down to which album you like the best. I'm a big fan of The Bends, so I enjoy that pop driven second disc more than somebody who tuned in after Kid A (for example). What do you like, OP?

He releases a lot of his stuff a few songs at a time so you can sample him that way, but your best bet is to get is compilation albums where he puts his most recently released songs and some other songs as well.

Coco is quite good: http://www.amazon.com/Coco-CD-Set-Parov-Stelar/dp/B002TSMIII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367796538&sr=8-1&keywords=parov+stelar+coco

They have slightly different feel to them, but i'm sure you'll find something you like :)

u/Seanticleer · 1 pointr/vinyl

I'm a major sucker for packaging, and I have to say that Washed Out's Within and Without is one of the classiest things I've picked up in a while.

If you're at all into chill-wave, I'd recommend this record. Most are pressed on white marbled vinyl (which, yes, can sometimes be a quality issue), but trust me when I say that it plays as smooth as butter. Here's a little sampling of what to expect. If you like that, you'll love the rest.

u/bamdrew · 2 pointsr/Music

> Telepopmusik

Less electronics, more minimal in sound, and yes darker; basically every song is resolutely in a minor chord, and only flirts with major chords briefly. Portishead has a reputation as being 'depressing music' because of this, from certain people who don't look to music to reflect more complex emotions that 'happy-pop-dance-party-anthem!Vol.3'

A lot of sampled film scores, sampled heavy drum beats, some organs, small amount of turntablism, all held together by Beth Gibbon's very distinct voice. The note about 'sampled film scores' is really something I didn't realize for a long time, but lends a lot of their tracks to feel very recognizable upon first listen ('Sour Times' for example sounds like a too-cool James Bond theme that was never used - https://youtu.be/rtv7PWIrHUs )

Oh, this live performance exists, where they have a orchestra... its got some great moments:

|about|Stereolab are a UK-based band whose style, mixing 1950s-1960s pop and lounge music with the "motorik" beat of krautrock, was one of the first to which the term "post-rock" was applied. They are noted for the use of vintage keyboard instruments like Moog synthesizers and Vox and Farfisa organs. Stereolab is also notable for founding their own record label, Duophonic Records, with a grant from UK charity The Prince's Trust. The band is often referred to as "The Groop" by their fans (and in the title of their song "The Groop Play Chord X" on the album Space Age Batchelor Pad Music).|

This is a fantastic compilation

It's got all the hits, some great album cuts and even b-sides, which are a must with Prince. After that just check out his albums. And listen to his first album also, it has two of my absolute favorite songs of his, Crazy You and So Blue

As a plus: there's a remix album, 'Rewhipped' thats actually really good, I stumbled on it trolling a coworker with one of the songs.

Wow, that's a great find. 'The Journeys by DJs - Coldcut' mix is one of my all time favourites. Check it out.

u/djfrodo · 6 pointsr/AskReddit

There are a lot out there. Tribe and De La Soul are obvious...after that I'd say Steinski, Coldcut, or Jurassic 5.

As for specifics,

Steinski - What Does It All Mean?

Steinski - Nothing to Fear

Coldcut - Journeys by Dj

Jurassic 5 - Quality Control

Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5 EP

And finally, one of the best uses of jazz and hip-hop:

Digable Planets - Blowout Comb

Definitely check What Does it all Mean? and Journey by Djs, they will change the way you think about Hip-Hop and pop music in general.

u/Shappie · 1 pointr/treemusic

Not to be a downer but all but 3 tracks of this have been released before with the OK Computer deluxe edition which also came with a dvd.

Again, not that I'm throwing shade on this release, I mean... I have already bought the vinyl. lol.

u/rpbtz · 2 pointsr/VinylReleases

For good measure, here's the Amazon.fr links to the individual albums:

  • Alive 1997 (single LP)
  • Alive 2007 (double LP)

The box set includes both albums - 1997 on silver vinyl, 2007 on white vinyl. It also includes a bonus single-sided 12" with the encore tracks on side A and an etching on side B, which comes on grey vinyl. It includes a 52-page photo book, a replica VIP-pass for the 2007 tour and a download card for both albums + a live video for Harder Better Faster Stronger. Not mentioned in the description, but from the picture it appears that the box also includes a slipmat.

EDIT: US pre-order via Amazon is up now - $130
u/Independent · 8 pointsr/LetsTalkMusic

Great minds and all that. I was just thinking about how most of us probably have music we love to hate that we secretly lip sync and maybe even dance around in our underwear to. Of course, that's purely a hypothetical example. <cough, cough>

Actually, in all seriousness, it's taken me awhile to be OK with whatever I like for whatever reason. It took me longer than most since I spent the entire '80s pissed off at pop culture, and pop music was just the most obvious tentacle of what I saw as rampant consumerism run amok. But, at some point, you get to this place where the Sex Pistols are no longer relevant in the same way they once were, and just having some bouncy pop to wash the dishes to is more enjoyable than all that teenage angst.

u/defjamblaster · 1 pointr/PRINCE

stylistically, price jumped around a lot, so we could give you the chronological release order, but the very next album won't sound like the previous in many cases. for that reason, you can start from the beginning and move up or jump around. if you liked purple rain, there is an album of b-sides that were recorded at the same time and released on the 12" singles back in the 80s. they have the same vibe as purple rain, as well an an expanded edition of purple rain just released which has even more songs that have the same feeling as the purple rain album.

u/kernowgringo · 0 pointsr/videos

Welcome to the 21st century, you have come to this genre late there is much you have to learn. I recommend you get yourself the Electro Swing albums 1-3.

u/ThrillSteak · 1 pointr/vinyl

Right now the 4LP version is cheaper(28.40) than the 2LP version(29.15) on amazon canada.

Do you think they'll honor it?

u/revglenn · 1 pointr/carpenterbrut

You can order it from Amazon right now. It's $50 which is probably the best price you're going to find. It's a 3 disc set, which are always expensive.

It sounds like a huge part of your musical experience was the manner in which you discovered it; I remember being 14 (I'm 21 now) and trading burned CD-Rs filled with tracks from Kazaa, or even being 10 and poking through my mom's CD collection. I think we've sort of lost that, traded in the serendipitous random discoveries of music for an infinite, instant catalog for cheap or even free. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but I'm not sure what's better.

Also, sorry to be pedantic, you misspelled Herb (Herp) Alpert in paragraph three. (Have you heard the remix of Whipped Cream & Other Delights? It's awesome.)

u/unreasonably_sensual · 1 pointr/Music

Here you go. I find that this album is always great for social gatherings, if for no other reason than the nostalgic/laugh factor.

u/filthysavage · 1 pointr/Music

Maybe something like this? Here is a remixed version of a Herb Alpert album. Or are you thinking something more along the lines of marching band music?

Holy shit, are you me? My dad bought awhile back (late 90s - early 00s, can't remember the exact year) two of these Pulse CDs off of some late-night infomercial. We would listen to these on long car trips to the mountains, and I'm guessing that this helped open me up to hardstyle/trance much later on.
