Daily Wallpaper - Final

Album of all Daily Wallpapers (includes sources and a few extras)

I apologize for the late post, it's been a busy day. I'll try not to get too carried away here, as I do feel like I've already said most of what I wanted to say about the series in the episode write-ups. Hibike is one of my top ten favorite series of all-time, and it succeeds masterfully in every regard. The direction, use of colors and lighting to establish mood, animation and background art, voice acting, writing, and soundtrack - everything is top notch. This rewatch has also shown me just how well the show holds up to repeat viewings. But rather than drone on about these aspects, I've chosen one specific part of the show to focus on.

Characters

One of Hibike's greatest strengths as a series is its relatable cast of characters, characters that aren't simply defined by their personalities, but that grow, have flaws, and show different sides of themselves as the story progresses. All of these elements combine to give the cast an element of humanity that you'll rarely see in the medium. Hibike has the unique ability to take characters like Natsuki, Yuuko, and Asuka, and completely change your perception of them over the course of the series. You can disagree with or even hate a character in one moment, and have a totally different opinion an episode later. Or you might find yourself being torn by sympathizing with a character like Kaori, but still wanting Reina to succeed over her. And speaking of Reina, what a perfect enigma she represents, with your perceptions of her character and personality being challenged on an almost episodic basis.

Choosing a favorite character is difficult for me, and I feel like Hibike is a series in which my favorites are likely to change with each rewatch. Even season two will likely color my opinions. Based solely on appearance, I think Midori has the cutest character design. But for the character as a whole, it comes down to a tough choice between Hazuki and Natsuki. But when pressed, I think I have to give the slight advantage to Natsuki here. I feel like Natsuki perfectly illustrates my points about the character development in this show, as she is a character that rises from utter obscurity, simply being the lazy second-year euphonium that refuses to practice, to becoming the warm and caring friend we view her as by series end. She overcame the hardships of the previous year and chose to be different than her upper-classmen were to her, finding inspiration from her juniors and going out of her way to support them. She sees every setback as an opportunity to encourage others, while maintaining a sense of humor. She's a fantastic character, worthy of admiration, and cannot be given enough credit.

Answers to the OP's Questions

I haven't participated in these up until now simply because I've been writing my posts in advance and posting from work, but since it's the finale, I thought I'd give it a shot!

  1. There's a lot of stigmas against over-use of narration, since it tends to encourage a "telling, not showing" style of storytelling, but I don't think that applies in this case. The narration is generally used to explain the finer points of what goes on in the band's day to day activities that may not be clear to viewers who are unfamiliar with the process. And while it's occasionally used simply as a means for Kumiko to share her inner thoughts with the audience, I feel like this usage decreases as the show progresses, perhaps reflecting how she's been slowly coming out of her shell over time.

  2. I think I sort of covered this in my characters section, but I definitely feel like it makes the band members and their conflicts more relatable. I don't feel like any of the characters in the show are "bad people," and Hibike's use of various perspectives helps to illustrate how different individuals can act on good intentions and still come into disputes with one another. Compromise is always necessary for any large group to be able to function as one, and Hibike demonstrates the challenges in getting everyone to work together.

  3. Hibike doesn't have any weak episodes, in my opinion. Nothing comes close to filler; every episode either advances the plot, or develops the characters, usually both. Even the OVA is a poignant and emotional side-story. My single favorite comedic moment in the show is in Episode 6, the Ruby and Platinum-Diamond Kawashima scene. But my favorite overall episode is, without question, Episode 8. As I said in that day's write-up, it might even be my favorite episode of any series ever. It's simply perfect in its execution.

    Season 2 Thoughts and Predictions

Season 2 PV w/ English subtitles

As excited as I am for the new season, I can't help but also feel apprehensive about season two not meeting my expectations. I feel like the first season was a labor of love by KyoAni, a culmination of many factors that may not be easily repeated. I've been trying to force myself to not get overhyped, but subconsciously comparing the two seasons will be impossible. All I can do is remind myself that, no matter what happens with this new season, it won't change the amazing work of art that the first season was, and will just try to enjoy it on its own merits, even if its level of polish isn't quite as high. Of course, this might all just be me worrying for nothing, and it could be even more amazing than season one. I tend to be overly pessimistic about these things.

I haven't read any of the novels (well, that's not 100% true - I read a bit of the first volume's translation just to see what it was like), so these thoughts are based entirely on my expectations derived from the first season, and the trailers. There are a lot of things we already know will be getting focus in the second season, such as some more of the second-year members (like oboe-chan), as well as other members who left during the previous year trying to rejoin. I'm curious to see if a new round of auditions will be made to decide who performs at nationals, and what this could mean for members like Natsuki and Kaori. Presumably, we'll be getting more backstory for Asuka and Taki, but I really hope we also get more for Natsuki as well. I expect that the new percussion adviser, while he will be popular with the band, is going to come into conflict with Taki at some point, either due to making a huge blunder that has a negative impact on the band, or differences in rehearsal philosophy - I don't really have any basis for predicting this, just a hunch. In any case, I probably won't be able to post in the new episode threads very often depending on when it airs, but I eagerly await the continuing struggles of Kumiko and the Kitauji Wind Ensemble!

    Additional Content

If you're hungry for more Hibike! Euphonium content beyond the anime and novels, consider the following:

/u/ultimatemegax has translated numerous interviews with Hibike's staff on his blog. There's too many to link individually, but you can find a list by scrolling to the bottom of this page. He also just posted a detailed write-up about Season 1 and what to expect in Season 2 just a few days ago here, so check it out!

If you're interested in Hibike's lead voice actresses (and also speak fluent Japanese), you can find lots of promotional videos with the seiyuu on youtube. Unfortunately, none of these have been translated as far as I'm aware, but they can still be fun to watch.

Finally, if you enjoyed the music you heard throughout the series, please consider supporting Hibike by purchasing one of the soundtrack albums:

Dream Solister - True (Full opening theme single album) (CDJapan)

Tutti! - Kitauji Quartet (Full ending theme single album) (CDJapan)

Hibike! Euphonium Original Soundtrack - Memories of Music (Full series OST with TV versions of the OP and ED) (Amazon / CDJapan)

Sound! Euphonium: the Movie Original Soundtrack - Reflection of Youthful Music (Features music and arrangements exclusive to the recap movie) (Amazon / CDJapan)

Additionally, there are Character Song albums for the four leads, as well as Radio and Drama CDs - I won't link all of them here, but they can easily be found on Amazon and CDJapan as well (and other similar retailers).

    Final Thanks

Thank you so much to /u/Quartapple for arranging this rewatch, for agreeing to postpone it until the middle of September even though it would be less convenient for him(?), and for putting so much effort into the daily posts. And thanks to everyone who contributed to the discussions, especially /u/Gaporigo for providing extra content and excerpts from the original discussion threads, and all the first time viewers who gave their play-by-play reactions - I love reading those! I hope Hibike was as meaningful an experience for you as it was for me.

I've had this journal thing called My Grandma: Her Stories on the top of my list for a bit. My grandmother is one of the most important people to me. I love hearing the wisdom she has to impart as well as any random story from her past. She loves writing and talking, so it's the perfect gift for both of us really. I'm not that great with starting conversation, and even if I do, I know there I things I don't even know I wanted to know. There are a bunch of questions about life stuff in there that I'm sure I'd love hearing about. I'm sure I could gush about my grandma some more, but yeah. That's my tippy top item.

Somehow didn't notice that you mentioned each list. The above is my main super wants list and really the only thing that I'd want if given the option between all lists. Grandma has a special place in my heart.

My other lists though:

From my food list: A pack of Luna Bars, so that my SO has a decent snack while in class. She doesn't get much of a break and sometimes goes a good 5ish hours without anything to eat.

My music list: This is a bit strange, though I want all of the albums there, none of them are super mega wants. Oddly enough, the super mega want albums are on my high priority/default list. I guess I should change that. That being said, the albums I reallyreally
really* want, are on Bandcamp. Artists that are lesser known and stuff. That'd either be Ott's Mir, Ne Obliviscaris or Naomi's self-titled that I've wanted for quite some time. Though, if it HAD to be on Amazon, the Blade Runner soundtrack would be AMAAAAZING!

Books list: I'm into cyberpunk, so the top of my list right now is between Afrofuturism because rarely are POC represented in sci-fi and I'd love to see who's done what and the Cyberpunk Handbook which is a bit of a parody/joke book.

Vidya games list: The highest are Way of the Samurai 3 and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed "Ultimate Sith Edition"

Finally, my other random assortment of items wishlist: Probably the H&K MK23 airsoft gun. I like H&K, and this is much safer lying around than the actual thing. I won't shoot somebodies eye out with it a la A Chris Story, I promise!

On my main list I have The Journey art book because it was one of the most beautiful games I have ever played and I love art books.

From my videogame list I have a Wiimote plus because my add on plus thinger makes Link run in circles. XD

These shoes from my Little Black Dress list because I like to be pretty XD

On my Zelda list I have this soundtrack because music is fun.

Puppy toy from my puppy list because she destroys her soft toys and these dragons are the only things that hold up for a while.

I dont have a highest on my Funko List because I can't choose.

This Pikachu is my highest on my 5 dollars and less because I have wanted this card since childhood.

On my DVD list I have Kiki's Delivery Service and From Up On Poppy Hill because I love Studio Ghibli.

On my cosplay list I have this sweater for a cosplay that I'm doing in April.

On my Big Dreams list I have the Zelda 3DS bundle and the PS4 because drools...I enjoy video games. Haha.

On my art list I have these markers because markers are my one of my favorite mediums.

....I have a lot of lists TT_TT

Wasn't able to find an official source, unfortunately. The closest I could get was this out-of-stock Amazon CD listing. Sourcing Nintendo game soundtracks in general can be quite painful; I'm not sure if it's because of the Japanese game industry in general, or specifically the company. Regardless, it's hard to overstate the consistent quality of their games, and the impact they've had on the industry as a whole. I think this quote by the late Satoru Iwata sums up Nintendo's philosophy quite well:
>On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer. -GDC 2005 @ 1:18

Donkey Kong Country 2:
^^^*Edited ^^^a ^^^little ^^^for ^^^grammar
>Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is an adventure platform video game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was first released on 20 November 1995 in North America, 21 November 1995 in Japan and on 14 December 1995 in Europe. It is the second installment of the Donkey Kong Country series and serves as a direct sequel to Donkey Kong Country. It was also re-released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. The game was made available for download on the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007, and for the Wii U's Virtual Console in 2015. It was followed by a sequel, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! in 1996.

>The story revolves around Diddy Kong and his girlfriend, Dixie Kong, who try to rescue Donkey Kong after he is abducted by King K. Rool. The game is set on "Crocodile Isle", in which there are eight worlds of varying environments, totalling to 52 levels. The game utilises the same Silicon Graphics technology from the original, which features the use of pre-rendered 3D imagery. Diddy's Kong Quest received critical acclaim, being widely regarded as one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made. Praise was directed at its graphics, gameplay, and soundtrack. It was the second best selling game of 1995 and the sixth best-selling game on the SNES.

>...

>Diddy's Kong Quest's soundtrack was composed entirely by David Wise. In addition, the game's soundtrack was the focus of an OverClocked ReMix collaboration titled Serious Monkey Business. The final track, "Donkey Kong Rescued", was remixed by David Wise himself, featuring Grant Kirkhope on electric guitar and Robin Beanland on trumpet. Wise cited Koji Kondo's music for the Mario and Zelda games, Geoff and Tim Follin's music for Plok, and synthesizer-based film soundtracks released in the 1980s as influences in creating the music for the Donkey Kong Country series. As with its predecessor, the music was produced for the SNES's SPC700 chip for the game to sound similar to the Korg Wavestation synthesizer.

---

David Wise:

>David Wise is an English video game music composer and musician. He was a composer at Rare from 1985 to 2009, and was the company's sole musician up until 1994. He has gained a cult following for his work on various games, particularly Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country series. Wise is known for his atmospheric style of music, mixing natural environmental sounds with prominent melodic and percussive accompaniment.

These remixes by Mesmonium and The Consouls are also worth listening to.

Evgeny Kissin Plays Chopin - Kissin is widely considered to be the premier pianist as far as Romantic pieces, particularly Chopin, and this album demonstrates clearly why that is.

Immortal Beloved Soundtrack - arguably the perfect first Beethoven album, with very rich, high quality recordings featuring legends Sir George Solti and Murray Perahia.

Mahler: Symphony No. 8 in E-Flat Major - Adagio from Symphony No. 10 - winner of the Grammy in 2010 for best classical album, Michael Tilson Thomas leads the SF Symphony and Chorus in what I think is the single best performance of Mahler's 8th Symphony in my lifetime. In addition, MTT and the San Francisco Symphony tackled Mahler's 7th Symphony back in 2007 and produced another truly epic and fantastic album.

You can find and rip them on YouTube. SubaruSumeragi22 (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsMRrJWUFu1owM9SoIqfFOocGwYByNI_S) has most, if not all, of the Realta Nua Soundtrack Reproduction songs. I really liked a lot of the songs out of the soundtrack though, and I absolutely love the design for the physical CD set, so if you feel the same way I would highly recommend getting it.

The majority of the writing (like the track list insert and other details on the CD case, as well as the names of the songs within the discs themselves) is in Japanese, so bear that in mind. I ordered mine from Amazon Japan: http://www.amazon.co.jp/Fate-night-Realta-Soundtrack-Reproduction/dp/B009SRFRR2

I actually just got it today; it shipped Monday and got here this morning (Tuesday). It came from Japan and arrived here in the midwest in just 2 days. I was surprised! Shipping was kind of on the high side (~$9), but the CD set itself was about $30 USD. It's easy to make an Amazon.jp account. I used a credit card to check out, and it converted the yen to USD. No fuss.

As for the CD set itself... damn. Look up some pictures of it if you get a chance. The discs are simple but so nice to look at, and the CD case itself is a great quality hard paper/cardboard (if that's the right term...) that flips open. It has a thick plastic sleeve too. I was worried about keeping this thing in good condition, but now I know it'll be just fine. Sorry for the wall of text, I just can't emphasize enough how great this physical CD set is.

u/tianxia · 1 pointr/VinylDeals

Oh wow when I clicked your links, I am sent to the amazon.jp pages. There's way more detail on their pages than on the American ones!

Let's take a look at the Amazon.jp page for the soundtrack.

We see that there is a matrix number on the headline: TJJA-10015. This is information not apparent on the US page. But we also see on the Japanese page the ASIN number. It is B07GPY62DW.

If we return to the US Amazon page I linked, the ASIN number is also B07GPY62DW. This seems to indicate a match.

Now to go further in depth, using the Amazon.jp link we can look at the track listing. I count 20 tracks. I'd like to see if these tracks match up with the 1988 25AGL-3058 release. I am using this discog page for reference. Just by comparing the Japanese characters on the Amazon tracklist with the characters on the discog tracklist, this also seems to indicate a match. I think that's pretty cool.

So, what do we know? We know that the US Amazon page I posted is for a "My Neighbor Totoro" LP with an ASIN of B07GPY62DW. We know from the Amazon.jp link, the LP with the same ASIN has a matrix code of TJJA-10015. This LP has a tracklist that matches with the information listed on discog for the 1988 25AGL-3058 LP. The 3058, to my current knowledge, is the soundtrack. This leads me to believe that the 2018 TJJA-10015 is a re-release of the 1988 25AGL-3058 LP. Cool.

Now here are my own personal concerns:

The US amazon page's track listing does not match with the 3058 album. The US amazon page does not have the TJJA-10015 code.
It may be possible, that for some reason, whatever is being sold on the Amazon.com (US) market is not what is being sold on their Japanese market. But I highly doubt it.

The ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number.

It is their own ID system. So, I tried taking the TJJA-10015 ASIN from the Amazon.jp page, and searched for it on the US page. The result I was given was the same link I was posted.

Here's more info on the other options:

The Image album only has 11 listed tracks with the ASIN B07GQW28VM and matrix code ending in 10014.

The Sound Book has 10 tracks, with an ASIN of B07GPXY376 and a matrix code ending in 10016.

I am confident that my post refers to the soundtrack. But I also recognize that the US Amazon page may not have an accurate track listing. Any hesitation due to this discrepancy between US and JP pages is understandable, and to all those hesitant, I encourage them to practice due diligence and see for themselves. If I am mistaken, send me PM and I would gladly edit for clarification.

Tl;dr - All three versions have different track listings, and different ASIN's. Chances are my post is for the soundtrack with a TJJA-10015 matrix code, that seems to match with the 1988 25AGL-3058 release.

> Why?

Think of all the art that has been created based off of the works of Shakespeare or Beethoven. That art adds value to society. Why should any entity have the exclusive right to an idea after all those who actually came up with the idea are dead?

> Further if you think that is what would happen I have a bridge to sell you.

There are many, many, many examples of creative works made based on stories and characters in the public domain, so yes. I do think that would happen.

> What would happen is a big company like walmart would sell Mickey mouse stuff without giving Disney their due.

The same thing that would happen if other companies made things based on other public domain works, like Aladdni or Alice in Wonderland movies, or Tarzan dolls like I mentioned above.

Edit: Also, WalMart would not be able to sell "Mickey Mouse" dolls, because "Mickey Mouse" and his design are a registered trademark of Disney. All that would happen if some Mickey Mouse cartoons fell into the public domain would be that people would be free to distribute those specific works. For example, there are some Superman cartoons from the 1940s that are in the public domain, but "Superman," the "S" logo and other parts of his design are still owned by DC/Time Warner. You are free to distribute those specific cartoons, but you cannot create any derivative works that infringe on DC's trademarks. Trademarks, unlike copyright, can go on indefinitely, but they require registration and active use and defense by their owner.

Great! FYI, there's a narmaya cd coming out soon that has a code for her idol outfit!

Use auto translate and making an amazon account is easy.

She also has an event coming up that some speculate might be at the end of this month because that's when her cd comes out (early may). No guarantees though.

I'm a Naru fan too!!

Oh, and you might want to wait to settle on an account for flash fest, which should happen in mid April. Although you'll miss the current event, you'll have access to limited characters with your beginners pick ticket.

Cassettes aren't dead yet. They are experiencing a resurgence much like vinyl. It was jump started heavily by the guardians in 14/15 but with big names like Green Day, the weekend, justin bieber, eminem all putting out new or re-releases on cassette. They are also still massively popular with smal acts too with often no other options but cassettes available at a merch tables after a small local show.

Is the same song as the Anime's crunchyroll PV but the soundtrack has not been released. Composer is Kenji Kawai and I think he did a superb job (he has composed for Fate Stay Night, just imagine how much epicness this guy is capable of).

I think I'll need to buy the actual OST CDs (In Japan physical CDs are still all the rage and I can't find it on streaming platforms, even from season 1).

Edit: Correction, The CD is available on Amazon Japan but my kindergarten japanese is not enough to understand https://www.amazon.co.jp/モブサイコ100-Original-Soundtrack-MOB-CHOIR/dp/B07MV3L2VW/

It looks like they've moved to only doing digital sales. The Skyrim soundtrack on there is digital only (used to have a physical copy available as well). Maybe they don't have the rights to sell GW2 as a digital soundtrack for some reason.

I wonder if ordering through this page would still work. Failing that, it looks like Amazon has one third party seller with a copy, or you could look elsewhere (eBay?) for people reselling their copies.

dunno about the walkman, but the cassette tape was released when the first movie came out. i'm sure they'll do the same for Vol.2.

Hey i got some question :

-If i buy the cd here: https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B07B47CKFX in mp3 will i have the code too?

-I saw that people who already have the outfit of percival and lancelot will be given 10.000 crystals for compensation so is there a way to have enough b-points to buy them? I mean is it worth to put money on card for this amount of crystals ?

My parents were pretty cheap and didn't buy me much in terms of entertainment (we didn't even have cable/ a gaming system). One of the few times my Dad got me something he announced that day that he was going to buy us Aladdin (the movie had just come out on VHS a couple weeks before I think). We got really excited, while he would rent us movies sometimes, he never bought us one before. Came home with this when he came back from work the next day. This comic brought me back to that moment. Never complained to him about it, but damn was I let down. Still, I ended up watching the shit out of that crappy Aladdin knockoff.

Hrm, well I see a tracklisting and it says "LP record" in the descriptions for the other two. [Image album] [Sound book] If they were just companion pieces to the soundtrack then I would think that the tracklisting would be the same.

I ordered mine on Amazon (blue vinyl, not signed). I ordered it on January 9th when it said it was temporarily out of stock and I received it on January 16th. Right now it's showing as being back in stock on January 29th. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N3ZQEZY/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's not out yet, but you can get it from Amazon jp. I know they can ship to Canada and US, but I don't know about other countries.

They made this one back in the day. I have it.

You had to be a Nintendo Power subscriber, and then they'd sell you stuff from their Power Players Club.

You could also buy sets of Killer Instinct pogs and carrying cases for your SNES/N64 and that sort of crap... which I have some of because I was a fanboi back in the day... and also because they overshipped an order to a friend of mine and he gave me the duplicate items.
