Here are some books my kids love:
Picture books:
Chapter books:
Most of the chapter books my kids read are part of a series so they aren’t really obscure but my kids love them so I figured I’d note them in case you hadn’t heard of any of them:
This book is SO much fun. It’s an interactive one so more fun when they get a little older.
A fun story about sharing and the importance of friendship when you need help.
This one is a hilarious story about a mean dog falling out a window lol. It was recommended to me by a little girl at Barnes and Noble. She picked it up and said “Wanna read about the worst dog ever?” She wasn’t wrong haha.
Just a nice little rhyming bedtime story about construction equipment.
Yes, like the Raffi song! Singing books are sooo great to help get your little one interested in talking. This was one of my favorite songs as a kid but I only recently found out about the book. My son loves singing this with me.
About loving your kid no matter who they are. Although I feel like it’s slightly geared toward moms of boys, it’s great for any kid or parent (they don’t actually use pronouns for the kid in the book FYI).
About the dreams and wishes for your baby as they grow up. Definitely on the sappy side, geared a little more toward moms of girls but I read it to my son often (and cry while I do it).
Cute rhyming story about the importance of friendship and being nice to those you meet.
This one is a little older but idk if everyone has heard of it. It’s essentially an interactive book that teaches your kid that they have control of monsters. Each page pieces together a picture of a monster (it’s not a scary one), until you tell the monster to go away, and then each page takes a piece of the monster away.
The Pigeon books, Elephant and Piggie books, and Knuffle Bunny are all great. Funny for adults and engaging for kids.
(Will edit and add more later as I think of them)
I saw this image and thought it looked familiar. Turns out I have a book with these guys called Monty and Tyler: http://imgur.com/a/NnXXX
> Monty and Tyler Take the Top Road is a delightful, true story of a horse named Monty and his canine friend, Tyler. Monty, a beautiful Dales Cross Cob, and Tyler, a pedigree black Labrador, achieved 'fame' in the media in the summer of 2005 due to a special and unusual skill they mastered. The story, told through the eyes of the dog, Tyler, demonstrates a tender and trusting bond between the animals, as well as the patience of their fun-loving owner who playfully encourages Monty and Tyler to develop a talent born entirely by chance. Monty and Tyler were the beloved pets of Corporal Sarah Louise Bryant (Née Feely), a soldier of the Intelligence Corps of the British Army, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on 17th June, 2008. Sarah had often suggested to her father, Des Feely, that the true-life adventures of Monty and Tyler would make a fun and amusing book for children and adults alike. It was this recollection that inspired Mr. Feely to put pen to paper during the months after his daughter's death, which has resulted in a moving and amusing story, lovingly written in memory of Sarah. The book is complemented by more than 40 colour photographs, bringing the true adventures of Monty and Tyler to life, while revealing the joy they brought to Sarah and her family. It is hoped that the book's success will enable Mr. Feely to make donations to various charities that support veterans of war.

There are some good picture books that might help with this, and maybe let him get out his desire to talk about his feelings and thoughts without having to yell them at everyone he meets :)
I would particularly recommend Life is Like the Wind, because there's a section where it talks in general terms about different beliefs that people have about what happens after death - "People have different ideas about where a life goes when it leaves the body. Some people believe the life enters another body to give life to a new creature. Others believe life goes to a happy place called heaven, where the life can enjoy its favorite things. Some think life goes deep into the ground, giving new life to trees and flowers, or that life goes way up into the stars, where it twinkles brightly and watches over us. And some believe that a little bit of the life stays behind. Even when the body is gone, people remember and feel the life, still loving the life deep inside their hearts." (This would give you an opportunity to show him there are lots of different beliefs out there, not just the one he's heard from his grandma; you can point out which ones she believes, which ones you believe, etc). I also recommend I Miss You: A First Look at Death for a thorough nonfiction explanation of death that might clear up any misconceptions or confusion he has, and Always Remember for a lovely story about how the ocean animals remember their beloved friend old turtle after he dies. Where Did My Sweet Grandma Go? is a good one about the loss of a grandparent (there's a grandpa version too), as well as Are You Sad, Little Bear?; for the death of a pet, I would try The Forever Dog or The Tenth Good Thing About Barney. I hope some of these are helpful, best of luck!
Oooooh I haven't colored in ages, but it's one of my favorite things to do. You just gave me a fantastic idea of what to do right now, too, since I am also sick! =D
I am in LOVE with this celtic knot mosaic coloring book on my Crafty Things wishlist! =O So beautiful!
And I know /u/boringzebra would just adore this pug pals coloring book! ^ _ ^ hehehe
Life is about using the whole box of crayons! =D Thanks so much for this contest, btw!
I loved these giant bricks so much at that age! Superfun for basic stacking as well as advance building.
Should probably wait a bit on this one, but Cootie is the best game ever for the preK & K crowd. Another classic game is Memory.
Have some construction paper, brown paper bags (I cut the bottoms off, then down one seam and use the backside as kraft paper), markers, and crayons. Even the 2 year old can rip paper up and stick it to contact paper to make fun collages! Bonus, no need for scissors!
And please don't forget books! Board might be best for the little girl, but if she's not an eater/tearer, then go ahead and get paper or hard backs. Rikki Tikki Tembo, a Seuss collection, Where's Spot, some Eric Carle, Carl, Richard Scarry, Jamberry, and some Little Golden Books ought to be a good start! Protip: Thrift shops have tons of books for kids in great condition.
Clifford the Small Red Puppy covers Clifford growing big and having to move to the country where there is space for him. Unfortunately for you, the story ends with Emily's dad getting a job in the country and the family being reunited with Clifford.
Be plain and honest. Our family cannot take care of the dogs they way the need to be cared for. Mom and Dad adopted the dogs before you were born. We used to live in a place where the dogs could run outside and be happy. They need to be outside in big open spaces like forests and hiking trails. We moved to this house so Dad could get a good job that gives us money to have an nice home, food to eat and all the toys you have in your room. Our friends are going to take the dogs to their home where the dogs will get as much love as you gave them, but will also be able to run and play the way they really need to. We are sending the dogs to a home that is best for them. We are doing this because we love them and want the best for them.
A 3-year-old is matter-of-fact, or at least mine was. This would have worked for her.
Floonet,
It might be too late by the time you find it, but there is a book I would like to recommend. It is a children's book (possibly a bit below her gradelevel, but this is a book for reading, not for school so it doesn't matter.) It is called The Tenth Good Thing About Barney and it is about another child who has lost a pet. Amazon has it http://www.amazon.com/Tenth-Thing-About-Barney-about/dp/0689206887 and you can probably find it in many local bookstores.
Now, Floonet's Niece,
Hey, I just want to tell you I had a cat once, and the cat was hit by a car, and I cried. If you feel like you need to cry, that is okay. It is sad, and people grieve when a loved one dies. I think you already know that things will get better. But it is hard to FEEL like it is going to get better. Now is an okay time to be sad. Now is an okay time to be upset, just remember that there WILL be a time to be happy again. Remember this even when you cry.
If you feel happy for a little bit let yourself. Don't feel guilty if you are happy for a few minutes, even after such a loss. Don't feel guilty if you feel happy without your parents there. Let yourself feel happy when you need to, just as you let yourself feel sad when you need to.
All things in their time, and a time for all things.
Love (of the impersonal universal kind)

So cute!

I love this one because it is apparently set at San Diego's Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo.
Anyway, I think Carl books should be issued with every Rott Pup. Just sayin.
Guessing it's this: "Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle"
This book got really good reviews! Dog Heaven
Other well reviewed books that you might want to look into are: The Forever Dog
and For Every Dog and Angel
It was actually written by P.D. Eastman, but it was the book with which I taught myself to read. :)
Well I thought I was asking a rhetorical question. Turns out, /u/RamiiNoodles has the english comprehension of a 6 year old. I've got a good book for you

I loved these two when I was little
Little fellow, if you honestly took the time to better yourself your inability to understand a few sentences not targeted towards your kindergarten level of reading comprehension wouldn't be such a source of exasperation for you. English is a beautiful language, it's a shame a few multisyllabic words vex you so. Here's a book to help get you started on your journey into words. It might be a little bit over your head but go ahead, give it a shot:

Early intervention therapist! No kids. But here's some toys I use regularly: geometric sorter, shape sorter, magnetic tiles, marble run, and bristle blocks.

My two biggest recommendations for books are: Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb for learning patterns and rhyme; Go, Dog, Go for learning adjectives and directional terms.
if anyones interested

Looks like Carl and Baby all grown up.
Do you understand how reading comprehension works? Apparently not. I've stated multiple times that just because they may not have enough evidence to convict her (which they did already once though), it doesn't mean she's innocent. A "not-guilty" verdict isn't even innocent, it's exactly that, not enough evidence to find you guilty.
Let me get you started though, cause I care about you: http://www.amazon.com/Wheres-Spot-Eric-Hill/dp/0399240462/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427571877&sr=8-1&keywords=spot+the+dog
This might be more your speed.
My son has this book - the dog's name is (now) Baltic
Where's Spot?, maybe? It's a classic.
Go, Dog. Go!

My daughter has a book about this happening In Poland. Baltic the Dog

This book. I will eventually need it when I need to explain death to my daughter. It was what my father read with me when our cat died in 2nd grade.
