I don’t think yellow is a good idea for your apartment. Because the floor is older it has yellow undertones, and I’m sure that around the apartment as well there are yellow undertones. which of you paint your cabinets yellow, will come out more making everything look dated.

I think you should leave the top cabinets alone, if anything get new handles and straighten them out. The stain of the wood and is really pretty and classic.

If you want a pop of color, I would paint your lower cabinets a dark to medium gray/blue, and have some bronze handles to pop. Something like SW 7602

As for floor tiles, check out this store on Etsy. They sell ready to use tile stickers that can go on top of whatever you have now. They have both floor and wall ones. For your floor, I think something like this could look nice.

For a backsplash, they make beautiful peel and sticks that don’t break the bank. Some I like are:

one

two

three

By keeping the backsplash neutral you can have your cabinets pop. And also giving your kitchen a clean modern look.

For carts, something like these could work, just make sure whatever cart you do end up buying is the same height as your counter.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you got any questions

I believe switching out your light switch covers will help. Changing them to black would give a good contrast.

If you’re really not into your backsplash, I would think about what colors are in your kitchen. From the photo you shared, it seems red, black and stainless seem to be the main colors. Maybe consider a stainless steel backsplash like this larger one and use a strip of this mixed red one to give some flavor to the background.

Someone mentioned adding lights, what a great idea to let the backsplash to truly shine. I mentioned using motion sensor battery powered light bars or strips. Regardless of your design choices, this is a great practical addition to your kitchen.

I hope this helped you, have a good one.

You bought a house!

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooo so I actually just moved in to my first townhome (I bought it) two weeks ago and I've redone most of the kitchen. Here is a before picture. The only thing that is not correct there is the floor in the dining room is actually dark wood now, but that is unrelated, lol.

I'm gonna share what I've done in hopes that maybe it will inspire you! Pic 1, pic 2, pic 3. Sorry for the mess - I've been sick this weekend (still am), so I haven't really cleaned up.

The things I've done:

  • I painted the walls red with eggshell finish paint. I used paint and primer in one, because I'm lazy. $20 for the gallon and the supplies.
  • I used this pack of adhesive backsplash, cut them into 3rds, and lined them along the counter. I picked up mine from walmart, $20 for a pack of 4.
  • I painted the ugly, 70s style cabinets. First I used a liquid deglosser to prime them, then I painted with a light cool grey paint, semi-gloss finish. $20 for both materials.
  • I added dark flat finish knobs (from home depot) to the cabinets (I actually haven't finished doing this, they are restocking on the knobs because I bought them all and they have some more on retainer for me to pick up, lol). $1.50 per knob and I need 15 of them.
  • I used a waterproof, stainproof, easy to clean adhesive countertop to give the countertops new life. Replacing countertops is expensive AF, so... This is the route I went. I chose a white and light grey design. It's basically a glorified sticker that is GIANT and you cut it to size and lay it on your current countertop. I ended up using 4 rolls of it and each roll was $6 at my local walmart.
  • I also added a magnetic strip bar on the wall to hold my knives because I've always had them that way - makes them super accessible and also decoration, I guess.
  • There is also a hook rack for my most used kitchen utensils.

    Other things I've arranged/done:

  • I have an ikea kitchen cart that I placed along the big wall.
  • I like having my nuts and baking supplies out in display, so I arranged them on top of the cart.

Things I still have to do:

  • Retouch the edges of the wall with paint.
  • Put up two rails high on the wall, on either side of the cart, to hang my pots and pans from.
  • Install the rest of the knobs on the cabinets :P

I'm personally a huge fan of the smaller mosaic tiles. I don't know your style, or what the rest of the room looks like, but something like this would be my top pick. And I'd put it where the ceramic brick tiles are too:

I also think that multi-size mosaic tiles like these would be a great feature add:

i had a similar set up in a previous kitchen except my cabinets were not warm cinnamon, but were a warm cream. In anycase I think something similar could work here. You want something that's not going to compete with the variations in the granite countertop and I think the ledgestone, while pretty, might do that.

how about a linear glass mosaic? You'll have to play around a bit with colors and get samples.

Also, consider your kitchen lighting. It might be a good idea to change the bulbs if possible to a whiter color so you can really see the tones of the materials you choose (for example 3k vs 2700).

I think it all looks pretty rad. A little on the cartoon side, but that's not bad and it all fits style-wise, there's no disparity between pieces. I also really like the color for the portal and circle.

Overhead projector sheet, or something like microscope slides/thin plastic or glass bits you can paint on.

Alternatively, lay down some hot glue on waxed paper and let it cool. Hopefully it'll smooth out a bit and not be lumpy like hot glue often does. Paint it red. Done! You can paint/dye some rice or grains and throw it in before it cools to add some viscera or gore type stuff, too.

Photoshop it in... Get some background plates made, and you can just pick and choose what one to use each time.

Or if you really want something to carry around, stone veneer sheets. A bit pricey, but I know you can get like 8 square feet and its only weighs like 2 lbs.

Also things like https://www.amazon.com/Aspect-Stick-Overlay-Kitchen-Backsplash/dp/B01FT6E0CS can be used...

This is just me, but having different materials gives you some eye candy in a smaller space.

I would be comfortable with either glass or metal tiles, if it were my job. Here is just one example of a mixed media backsplash. There are thousands more to choose from:

Ew paypal.

Should be easy to make the big ones yourself (I'm not going to try to cut their support from the small tags even if I don't like paypal). This is just off the cuff with no research into authenticity (or even size... I think they're 1" tiles but not sure).

Get some white tiles and some cobalt blue tiles, cut diagonals as desired (you'll need a tile saw or a scorer and a nipper), mount, and grout. You can pull them all of the mesh backing if you want, or pull them off in the right patter and glue other ones back on to match. Then you'll need to mortar or epoxy them to a solid backing and grout between them.

You can also get bulk 3/8" tiles in white and blue but those boogers are tiny.

Daltile (the first links) are at least originally from Texas and have a local store. I wasn't able to get more info on the exact kind of tile and source from a few quick searches though.

Real 4x4 marble isn't terribly more expensive. If you want the Carrara stuff, it's a little pricier but it's still 9 for the price of 4!
