Top Reddit comments about Dog Harnesses:

u/lzsmith · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining
  • 6 foot leash (not retractable) [lupine]
  • body harness for comfortable choke-free walking. Get something like [petsafe sure-fit] that will adjust to fit many sizes. After you get your dog and have exact measurements, you can always choose something else padded/customized. If your dog is bigger and difficult to handle, get a harness where the leash clips on the dog's chest (not on his back) e.g. [sense-ible harness].
  • buckle collar with ID tag that has your phone number. I like the [tags that rivet directly to the collar], so they don't hang down and jingle.
  • Long line (20ish feet) for letting the dog "off leash" safely during training. Get a leash/rope style long line, not a retractable one.
  • Toys: one rope tug toy, one ball, one stuffy that squeaks, one food-stuffable [kong], and one food-dispensing puzzle ball. Buy more after you figure out what the dog likes.
  • baby gates. [this one] has worked great for me because it's sturdy, tall, and has no horizontal bars for climbing. You can get a cheapo gate from home depot for like $25.
  • [x-pen]. Great for confining a new dog when you aren't supervising. Prevents bad habits (like eating your house) from forming.
  • variety of treats. buy a few small packs to sample, buy more after you know what the dog likes. Freeze dried liver (e.g. [stewart pro treat]) is usually a safe bet.
  • treat pouch. [these] [two] are my go-to favorites.
  • at least one non-slip mat for the dog to lay on. A cheap rubber-backed rug from walmart works fine. A thin memory foam bath mat also works fine. I typically get get whatever's cheap and on sale at someplace like tj maxx.

I'd focus less on brand for stuff like toys and brushes, it matters more for things like dog food.

I love oven baked tradition dog food for small breeds and I get it through global pet foods. My dog used to not want to eat and then I switched him to that and he was suddenly a good eater.

For treats I use Crumps' Naturals Mini Trainers Freeze Dried Beef Liver but any freeze dried liver or organ meat works great. Sometimes I just boil chicken and dice it up small and use that as a treat.

I recommend using a harness where the lead clips through rungs near the harness clasp so that if the clasp comes undone your dog will still be attached to the leash. Never use a harness that uses Velcro to close, I learned that the hard way.

I use a car seat like this one https://www.amazon.ca/Kurgo-Rover-Booster-Seat-Tether/dp/B004699SHW/ref=sr_1_27?keywords=car+seat&qid=1574183135&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-27 not sure what the safety rating is but it keeps my lil guy from trying to crawl into my lap when I'm driving.

Please don't add a bell to your dog's collar. Dogs have much better hearing than humans and the bell would be so close to their ears. If you are worried about your dog getting lost make sure they have a tag on their collar with your address+phone number and make sure they are micro chipped.

u/random_user66 · 2 pointsr/beagles

Hi!

I had the exact same problem with my beagle Ruby.
My mum got her one of these and she seems to like it.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Julius-K9-Powerharness-Size-Chest-Black/dp/B0036I88H0

Don't have to touch her paws to put it on (which she also hates), has reflective strips on it, and a handle to pull her away from all the nasty stuff she tries to eat! I'm in the UK but hopefully this brand is available where you are and meets your budget needs!

I also love that your beagle and I share the same name ha ha.

Hope that helps!

Give James a fuss from a fellow James :).

Instead of a walk in the morning, could you run with him? Or ride a bike? That would help tire him out more. I got the Tuff Mutt hands-free leash and I LOVE it. It has made running SO much easier. I also got the Ruffwear front range harness because my dog pulls like a madman and I wanted something with enough padding in the chest. My two complaints about the hands-free leash are that 1) the material is kind of slick, so the loop that clips around your waist will loosen frequently and need to be readjusted, and 2) if your dog lunges after something or changes directions suddenly, it'll feel like someone punched you in the gut.

Like you, I also leave my dog with a variety of treats like a kong, a stuffed marrow bone, and a holee roller ball with long/wide treats in it. I also started giving him these calming treats. He really does not like the taste and spits them out unless I cover them in peanut butter. I have no idea if the treats have much of an impact (the reviews are very mixed) or if the running does more to tire him out, but I will definitely say that the running + calming treats + puzzle toy combo has been perfect for my dog. He's basically knocked out the entire 9.5 hours I'm gone.

u/PoodlePPusher · 1 pointr/Hounds

Thank you! We love her so much :) It is comparable (and preferred by most of the reviews I read) to the Ruffwear Front range harness. She is wearing this Harness by True Love: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01FRGASZI/ref=psdcmw_3024192011_t1_B01LWL2VWT?th=1&psc=1

We have had it for about a month and it's worked out great. She likes to pull and it's held up so far.

u/Apollokubitz · 2 pointsr/germanshepherds

Harness. The leash I made, got some climbing rope from my local military surplus store, they also had the metal pieces to clap the rope don't remember what they are called. They also had the leash clip thing too... I made a short one and a longer one came out good and super strong.

The harness is awesome and military grade I definitely recommend it! I need to buy the strap extensions it just barely fits around Apollo at the moment. They sell them on a couple sites check out Signaturek9.com they have the extensions there, the harness was just way cheaper on Amazon. Let me know if you have any more questions... I am thinking about posting up a review on it here if people are interested...

u/mysled · 1 pointr/RunningWithDogs

If you want something longer lasting and waterproof, I highly recommend glowdoggie. Their customer service is awesome, too.

The only downside is they're hard to carry in a pack if you're going somewhere where it'll be dark later, because they're always on when they're in the 'wearing' position. But they're great lights and run on AAA batteries so it's super easy to replace. And the colors are great too.

I also highly recommend hurtta's reflective vest or even just their harnesses with the reflective stitching.

u/BrianMHayes · 3 pointsr/BorderCollie

I got the Large for my 50lb BC. Fits perfectly, super convenient, comes with the car attachment which I use every single day. Plugs right in and clips right to the harness at the same spot a leash would. It's adjustable slack too, so my BC can hang out the window without me worrying. I really vouch for this.

I would definitely relay the food issues to your vet ASAP. It would be helpful to him/her to have as much info as possible, so maybe keep a log of what he eats, when he doesn't etc. I know that switching up food can sometimes be hard on them too; it's typically recommended to do it very gradually. So maybe he's reacting to that.

I agree that a lot of the other issues seem like he may just have pent-up energy. German Shepherds need a lot of exercise in my experience. Is he socialized with other dogs? If he's up to date with his vaccines and good around other dogs, try taking him to the dog park. I have a GSD mix and the dog park is a god send for us.

I totally understand the walking problem, too. Check out the wiki for learning about loose leash walking. It's a long process, so just start doing what you can. In the meantime, a front-clip harness like this can alleviate a significant amount of the pulling.

It might be worth trying another basic obedience class. Even one through Petsmart or Petco can at least give you a chance to have someone guide you through some basics.

u/KarmaCorgi · 1 pointr/WiggleButts

We personally use a Herta Lifeguard harness: https://www.amazon.com/Hurtta-Collection-35-Inch-Padded-Harness/dp/B003TWISUU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474642082&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=hertta+harness

It's our favorite harness. It doesn't have a front-clip option, but it has one on either side as well as on the handle on top. It's been a very handy harness to have when we need to easily grab him (he just loves see what's happening when two other dogs get in a scuffle...).

u/borkyborkybork · 3 pointsr/puppy101

My puppy chewed her harness (although she's never destroyed one thankfully) and the best solution seemed to be to only leave it on when she was going to be distracted by something else, like walks or class. Leaving it on to help your puppy adjust was a good idea, but you might have to change your strategy.

This is the one I use. My dog can still get her jaw under the chest portion, but at least it's a lot of material to get through. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B073TRHMS6/ I would go with whatever style suits your dog's body type best.

u/UdderlyFoolish · 4 pointsr/Dogtraining

When we adopted our 80lb rescue he was a terrible puller, we got this no pull harness at the recommendation of our trainer. Years later it's still going strong though he has much better leash manners now so the "no-pull" aspect is hardly used. But this one seemed to fit much better than the big brand one that you usually see at Petsmart and such, I forget the name.

It does help with the pulling. Maybe not as much as a nose lead but I didn't like that too much on our dog, but muchhhh better than a regular harness or collar.

For extra peace of mind, even if you get a well fitted harness they make double leashes so you can attach to both the harness and regular collar in case one fails.

u/jocularamity · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

Agree with notochord that you should retrain her to walk with you using your new equipment.

If you want to try a harness, make sure it's one where the leash attaches in front of the dog's chest, not on her back. If the leash attaches on her back then it will let her pull even more, like a sled dog. If the leash attaches on her chest, it removes some of her pulling power and lets you steer her easily.

Freedom Harness and Sense-ible Harness are both good, if you want to go the harness route.

u/teevsmcfeevs · 2 pointsr/corgi

Hey, I hope this helps a little bit. I have the Chai's Choice Harness for my boy who is ~27 lbs in a medium. I measured his chest according to the chart provided and while I was nervous to order it, it ended up fitting him quite well. I also like that it's a nice quality vest harness and it has hooks on the chest and back area. It's very easy to put on. Oh, and it also isn't too expensive for what you're getting in my opinion!

Also here's my boy. https://imgur.com/jyW4rA8

u/purplejackets · 4 pointsr/shiba

We use the harness linked below , it came with a short lead which can also be used to secure them to the seatbelt. We loop the metal part through and then buckle him in. It keeps him from roaming the car, and since it's attached to the seatbelt should anything happen he's not going anywhere.

He isn't the happiest with our set up, he would rather be in my lap. However safety is more important. We always buckle him in the back seat as well. :)

u/Buy-theticket · 3 pointsr/akita

Ruffwear harnesses have been worth the money over a generic one on Amazon in my experience. We normally use the Front Range for day hikes or camping trips, it's simpler then some of the others so it's easy to get on him but it's been strong enough to hold his ~120lb weight briefly to help him up/down a steep ledge. Not sure what you mean by good in the water but he swims in it pretty regularly and it dries out overnight no problem.

https://www.amazon.com/GAUTERF-Universal-Harness-Escape-Harnesses/dp/B07GFBQ4H6?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

It took him a little bit to get used to it. We put it in him about 10 minutes each day, when we have time, and play with him with string & toys so that he realizes he can run around and still move even with his harness on. He also really loves outside and chasing leaves so I think that distracted him! Good luck!

u/Barkbringer · 2 pointsr/puppy101

I bought SO MANY HARNESSES for my Yorkie. Him outgrowing things was one issue, but him needing extra training to even accept a harness was another.

I recommend something adjustable and simple like this as the straps are less obstructive and therefore less noticeable to the puppy.

u/luckysvent · 1 pointr/picrequests

This is actually really good!! I appreciate your work tremendously

I actually meant for the red part to be in place of the body lol
Here's an example- https://www.amazon.com/ALBCORP-Reflective-Service-Harness-Polyester/dp/B01M1BHGP2#

u/vanillademille · 3 pointsr/RunningWithDogs

While I think it's better in the long run to correct unwanted behavior, my dog was such a leash-puller that I bought an "Easy Walk" harness. The lead attaches to the front of the harness, so if he pulls he turns to the side. It's impossible for him to pull on the lead because he'll completely change direction. We run with it daily and it's great!
Easy Walk Harness

u/jourtney · 3 pointsr/BestOfAmazonPets

Sensible Harness. That harness is a back hooking harness, and although it may allow some control over the center of the dogs body, the Sensible Harness allows far more control. The Sensible Harness hooks to a hook on the chest of the dog. This harness allows full control over the front half of the dog. Whenever the dog pulls, it is immediately redirected towards you which allows for praise and treats. It eliminates all pulling. I use it on each of my dogs even though they are quite good on-leash as is.

u/i_scatter_rubbish · 1 pointr/puppy101

Hi thanks for such a detailed response, I appreciate it! Is this harness along the lines of what you recommend (think it has the Y you're talking about). Link

u/bitsybetsy · 1 pointr/Goldendoodles

This is the exact one I purchased for my dog. You should start out as early as possible with it... There are smaller sizes, they aren't too expensive so you can size up as needed and they are very adjustable. Good luck!! This is a link to the petsafe brand med/lg size with reflective stitching, and it comes with a leash.

Don't be an idiot and drive with your dog on your lap.

She won't be so cute when you get in a minor collision and she splats into the windshield.

Spend $5.99 on this and bring her to a dog store to find a harness that fits her properly.

Enjoy her. I love my little corgi! :D

I don’t mind at all! I should really keep this information handy lol. Give me a sec to check my amazon history and I can get you some links ☺️

These two harnesses are popular for tracking work because they're comfortable and non-restrictive. Depending on how you want to use a harness, they might be too non-restrictive.

Looks like a super cheap Julius K9 ripoff to me.

u/audersaur · 1 pointr/dogs

I'm not sure what your budget is, but we have a Ruffwear harness that has clips on the front and the back. It's been super helpful, and it's padded so if he does pull, it's not digging into him and hurting him.

u/Madzeys · 2 pointsr/dogs

You could try the harness lead. It helps with pulling and is one piece that wraps around the dog. It tightens across the dogs chest when it pulls in any direction, so it won't choke your dog, just make him uncomfortable enough to stop. It's virtually escape proof. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it is only One piece so you can't detach the dog from the leash. That being said though, for a hard to fit dog and to feel secure on walks, it's worth it.

I'm not saying it's not, but you can buy that exact vest on Amazon with the patch that says "Service Dog" for $20...the whole process of getting around the system is too easy.

u/alligatorslippers · 1 pointr/reactivedogs

Thank you for the recommendation, sounds good. Is it this one? https://www.amazon.com/Eagloo-Harness-Adjustable-Reflective-Breathable/dp/B075GG99Z8

u/Krispyz · 3 pointsr/dogs

Honestly, I've tried the "pet specific" ones and they sucked. I switched to dremel and haven't looked back. Sorry I can't help there, but have you tried doing some positive reinforcement training with the dremel? Try to get him used to the noise without using it on him and working on moving closer?

This looks very similar to the harness I bought for my dog. She doesn't pull much now, but when I was first training her, it helped a lot. We used a leash that attached to the collar and the front clip of the harness. When she got excited to meet a person or dog, we used the harness clip to keep to keep her from choking herself.

u/EvannaAmbrose57 · 1 pointr/puppy101

I was warned of this type of harness when I bought one for my pup. However, I found that the front clip harnesses that are in a Y shape across the chest (something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Eagloo-Harness-Walking-Handle-Reflective/dp/B075GG99Z8) had much more positive reviews with fewer potential health hazards.

u/lainamaina · 2 pointsr/AskVet

I actually just bought the Harness Lead for my girl Rosie. It works by the same principle as the others you've listed.

She is terrified of most harnesses for some reason but she actually seems to tolerate this one fairly well.

It works well to stop her pulling but she also is more sensitive in generally about having things on her body. So far though I like it!

u/tapetum_lucidum · 1 pointr/Pets

Lol, I tried that with my sneaky kitty. She did the classic side flop and refused to move. I sat next to her or moved her to the part of the yard that she always slinks towards. I gave up and didn't have the patience to continue. I bought a cheap harness and leash. My cat learned to twist out of hers eventually. I recommend a comfortable, sturdy harness.

u/Traceyt715 · 1 pointr/dogpictures

Yes! I was so taken aback by it at first. Her parents of course bought it for her, and it's to make her lunging/pulling habit more comfortable for her and the walker. They work a lot so her manners are lacking, but I've been training her.

this is what it is.

u/alf3311 · 6 pointsr/dogs

You don't need any certification to be a service dog as long as the dog is trained for a specific task that is directly related to the person's disability. Just being well-behaved or an emotional support animal is not the same thing as a service dog.

If or when you feel that your dog meets that criteria, I would just buy a service dog vest and move on with your life.

u/MKandtheforce · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I would looove to get this for my new puppy. :)

u/mijoli · 2 pointsr/dogsupplies

Yes. I'm in Sweden and ordered it from amazon.co.uk since it's not available here.

Edit for link.

u/naedawn · 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

I don't have any experience with it, but I wonder if a Harness Lead might be worth a try. It seems like the lack of a clip might be handy for gradually acclimating her to wearing it tighter.

u/cam18_2000 · 2 pointsr/aww

I could be wrong but that doesn't appear to be a canine ballistic vest, it appears to be just a normal MWD modular harness like this.

u/YoureGrammerIsWorsts · 20 pointsr/legaladvice

> A service animal is not required to be vested

Not to mention that a service vest is something that costs all of $25 on Amazon and doesn't really mean much.

u/El_BreadMan · 1 pointr/shiba

You gotta look into no pull and/or front clip harnesses. Something like this:

Eagloo No Pull Dog Harness with Front Clip,Walking Pet Harness with 2 Metal Ring and Handle,Reflective Oxford Padded Soft Vest for Small Medium Large Breed (Orange, L) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075GG99Z8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3vtKBbD7YCK0M

I’m not recommending that one in particular. It’s just the style.

u/Dalaniel19 · 3 pointsr/pitbulls

The only harness I use for my pit is harness lead

I personally use it as a gentile leader now, but previously used it as a standard harness and it did greatly reduce pulling.

u/jaber6 · 1 pointr/dogs

You mentioned you tried the leash to seatbelt and choking himself. I'm guessing it's latched to his collar? If so, try getting a harness and it use for car rides. This way if he pulls, he won't choke himself. We have the seatbelt clip one.

u/SpoonThief · 6 pointsr/legaladvice

Just going to add a link to the ADA website's brief Service Animal overview and relevant section:

>Under the ADA, service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the service animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective controls.

Literally anyone can go online and buy a vest that says service dog. The same goes for any online "registry" of service animals. They and the dumb cards they give out have no legal standing with the ADA.

u/Busterthebob · 3 pointsr/Pets

I think that "suitcasing" is a bit cruel and unnecessary.choke collars can be dangerous to your dogs health, causing collapsed trachea . There are much better ways to prevent a dog from pulling.

u/whippetnipples · 1 pointr/dogs

Some people are opposed to these, but a prong collar might be your best bet, especially with a dog of that size. They're designed to stop the dog from pulling. Another option is the pinch collar but I find those don't work as well with larger breeds.

If you're averse to that, try a front clip harness or gentle leader. Front clip harnesses make the dog flip 180 degrees (so it's facing you) when they pull too hard. It kind of frustrates the dog and helps it stop. Leads work similarly, by pulling the muzzle down and away when they pull too hard.
