Personally I recommend Fenwick Rods and Mitchell Reels (current set up is a Fenwick HMG 6'6" Medium Heavy Action with a Mitchell 300 reel. Approximately $160.00 for this setup). However Earthnut has a really good answer on rods so I figured I'd throw something else out there in the event you wanted some other options. I got a backpack tackle box last year and love it. I fish the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and hated lugging my tackle box up and down the river as I searched for a good hole. Having it on my back was a game changer. I linked to something similar below:
https://www.amazon.com/WT3503-Lighted-Compact-Backpack-Water-resistant/dp/B00A0PA4R4?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_5
Other ideas:
- A good pair of fingerless fishing gloves with gripping material
- A nice Leatherman multitool. I recommend the Wingman or Sidekick as they have a knife on the exterior of the handle (meaning he won't have to open multi tool to get to it). They can also be engraved for a personal touch
- A subscription to some sort of Mystery Tackle Box. I haven't personally done this yet but I have some buddies who have and they love them. They pick the type of fish they are most often fishing and get a monthly treasure trove of baits and such they might have never tried before.
I used to fish in W NC quite a bit. If I were going to give a beginner a box of flies to start in that area, they would be: elk hair caddis, bird of prey caddis, prince nymph, little black stones, hares ear, yellow sally, parachute adams, PMD, mayfly emergers, a few hot spot jig nymphs with heavy weight, a couple of simple streamers, and terrestrials. I've had banner days in NC with just a #16 adams (or haystack, similar mayfly pattern but takes about 30 seconds to tie). You could give her a box of flies and a little pack to hold those with 4X-5X tippet and some hemostats. Throw in a couple of leaders too, 9 foot 4X for the bigger rivers like the Nantahala, New, or Hazel Creek, and 7.5 foot 4X or 5X for the small mountains streams like the stuff you find in the Smokies. Good luck!
So, im basically looking for Soft bag, with a shoulder strap, that I can use to carry a squad or two in when I play in remote (read not at home) locations. I’ve been trying to limit my search for bags that can store the storage bins horizontally (cause im anal like that) to keep model damage to a minimum. I’ve been looking at this one closely, but not a lot of information is on it. Heck, ive not really seen any other pictures aside from the Single stock photo.
Has anyone used this bag before? Dimensions of the bag? Size of the included storage trays? More pictures of the thing?
If not, is there something similar I should consider?
I was also looking at this bag..
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0053YR6WS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1LU9194MZAZGA&coliid=I12QPVNL70WEXK&psc=1
Which is a bit smaller, the trays inside are a tad too short to hold the range ruler safely, which means I would have to keep it in a pocket, or between the trays to reduce the chance of bending. Its also kind of a gaudy color.
Opinions? Options?
-Thanks
this is the lanyard: https://www.amazon.com/Mountain-River-Lanyards-Lanyard-Fishing/dp/B006UM0B38?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_3
this is the lumbar bag i'm using today: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076QN3ZYF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_VZDxCb25AXS9G - i don't use the sling strap or little tool patch right now, but for wet wading i might wear it that way for comfort. i'm still struggling with my net retractor on this bag, i have it on the orange grab handle at the top (shown better in the 2nd photo on amazon), i'll try using their net handle sleeve the next time i go to see if it's comfortable picture
Expensive, but a great product. Really well thought out design.
https://www.amazon.com/WT3604-Tackle-Lighted-Backpack-PT3600/dp/B00A0PA46U?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1
My friend has this one and it is surprisingly roomy. It comes with dual-sided boxes.
If you wanted more room for tackle boxes I just checked out this from Academy the other day and the quality is superb. I'm thinking about ditching my large Okechobee bag for it.
Your buddy wants a chest pack. The one I use has a strap that goes around your neck like a pair of binoculars. Doesn't put ANY weight at all on the shoulders. It would be perfect for him.
This is what I would recommend just to try it. It's exactly what I'm talking about and it's cheap.
https://www.amazon.com/Maxcatch-Fishing-Chest-Lightweight-Accessories/dp/B01G6YMIRG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495199682&sr=8-1&keywords=maxcatch+chest+pack
I just bought a backpack and I love it. I have not yet used the pole holders. It is not as expensive as other bags I seen online. I bought it at Dick's yesterday. Amazon currently has it cheaper.
Spiderwire Fishing Tackle Backpack
I like the small, insulated cooler section of the bag.
I use a deck mounted soft cooler, specifically this one. It's been great for me, very easy to take on and off, and keeps ice for a while.
One of the main chest packs you're going to get very very good reviews about is this guy.
Apparently a pack used by many a competition (but not solely of course) fly fisherman, the pack has been discussed and reviewed here a few times and is comfortable, spacious, and has magnet based closures which are very accessible.
Box at home, bag for the road. I just got this and it's been working out well. Nice waterproof zippered pocket for the cell, external clips for elastic loops for pliers/knife, and it fits three large plano boxes (very) snugly. Hard bottom is a nice touch, and the price is right. Only problem is I've had it for two weeks and already two of the nylon loops attached to the zippers have come off. Other than that, all good.
I’m considering getting one of these type slings for kayak fishing.
This one on Amazon looks good. Anyone have any others they recommend?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B074P44J57/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A1RIL4ISDY2EWZ&psc=1
Every time someone asks about bags, the Midway ones are suggested. I am sure they are great, but I actually went a different route by buying a soft sided fishing/tackle bag.
This one....25 bucks.
Lots of pockets, velcro dividers inside so you can create padded sections, etc...
I got one of these and have been incredibly happy with it: http://www.amazon.com/Ready-Fish-Soft-Sided-Tackle/dp/B002RPMUHM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417251660&sr=8-1&keywords=tackle+bag
It will fit three larger plano hard cases in it, along with all the other goodies I need.
I use this Picifun bag. I can fit two rods on it an the small size makes it so I cant haul all my tackle out at one time, which is good if your trying to keep it light weight. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074NYJB73/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_JZDPDbDMYYC3N
I have this one and really enjoy using it. Not big enough for all my gear but I could easily specialize the pack for each trip. http://www.amazon.com/WT3604-Tackle-Lighted-Backpack-PT3600/dp/B00A0PA46U
Memoir '44's boxes and inserts are absolutely useless once you expand beyond the base game. I've got the base game, PT, MT, EF, WW, W/D board, Terrain Pack, Breakthrough boards, & Equipment Pack all stored in one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000EDRRZO
It's the perfect size storage solution and everything fits so nicely.
I second this, I have the Wolf Tackle Bag and love it.
They make them in a few sizes. I use this one and love it.
If you're insane, then I guess I am as well. I'm a shore fisherman and pack a similar variety, but I carry three colors each: junebug/black, green pumpkin, watermelon candy for worms/creatures/craws; white, shad (silver two-tone) and some kind of bluegill imitator for flukes and swimbaits. I'm able to fit it all in a backpack, along with 2-3 3600 sized boxes, line spools, tools, etc., and it gets to about 16 pounds total. I keep all of the soft plastics in the top compartment in their own bags except for Keitechs, which I put in a binder. Presumably this size of bag would work in a kayak.
If someone is looking for a smaller bag check this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H4KUTWW/ref=twister_B01H4KUTUO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Wife got me one for Christmas. I pond fish in our neighborhood and it's great to hold what I need without too much weight.
The second one looks a lot like this https://www.amazon.com/Multi-purpose-Military-Tactical-Bag-waterproof-anti-tear/dp/B01LF5TS7O
Usually that fancy cosplay stuff involves a lot of modifying and diy work to get the desired look but that's a place to start.
Also Google search for "tactical drop leg bag" or "motorcycle drop leg bag" or "tactical belt bag". China retailers love the word tactical.
I use a small shoulder bag. I can fit a couple of very small planos, power bait and a beer in the main section. It's got a holder for fishing pliers as well.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074WMGDWF
I use this. It's cheap and it is good quality
Cool. I read the tackle trays that come with it aren't big enough to hold hard baits. Did you have this issue?
Edit: do you have this model?

The rods will stick out on both but they both hold lots of tackle
How about a shoulder pack.
