> I am legal age in my state, just not legal age to conceal carry yet (which I most definitely plan on doing when I turn 21) but I do want a pistol.

You have to be 21 to purchase a pistol--federal law.

>--Preferably has some oompf, I'll accept advice and suggestions on what caliber would be most appropriate for what I need it for (home defense currently, in the future hopefully using it as a conceal and carry.)

The hotter the round the slower the follow, at least as a general rule. You don't want "oomph" you want something comfortable to shoot and controllable. You want it comfortable because you're going to need to shoot it a lot to get good at it.

As far as what kind to get, go to a range that rents guns and rent some guns.

After you've tried three or four (at least) sit down and figure out what characteristics are *most* important to you. Is easy concealablity more important than magazine size? Do you want polymer or metal frame? Striker or Hammer? Revolver or Pistol, Single Action, Traditional Double Action or Double Action Only.

https://www.amazon.com/Bulldog-Vaults-Personal-Security-1-8-Inch/dp/B00PBIH8UQ/ comes with a cable to lock it to something.

Or https://www.amazon.com/Stack-GCB-500-Steel-Pistol-Cabinet/dp/B002TOKR2G/ that you bolt to the wall or another cabinet.

No, they aren't really safes, and no they won't stop a determined thief. The first one you can sort of stick somewhere non-obvious. The second one...is a little harder to hide.

There's a brazilian other options on Amazon.

Bah. That's no fun.

A lot of people have linked/referenced $20-30 keyed or combination gun lockers from no-name manufacturers, such as this or this. I own several items like these and have used them for years. They work ok, but are pretty slow to open, and not really super secure. I recently found out about RFID-keyed safes, such as the Hornady Rapidsafe, available from [midway]
(https://ads.midwayusa.com/product/307534/hornady-rapid-safe-2600kp-l-personal-electronic-rfid-safe-steel-black?cm_mmc=pf_ci_google-_-Shooting+-+Gun+Safes+%26+Storage-_-Hornady-_-307534&gclid=Cj0KEQjwzpfHBRC1iIaL78Ol-eIBEiQAdZPVKrYvl3cNr1M8gURsw34-2LQ-XUpyY6wchkbuKGm1XjwaAiaY8P8HAQ), amazon, and others. I picked up my first one a few weeks ago. For my needs, it is everything I could have wanted in a car safe (or bedside safe) for my handgun. These are faster, more secure, and more user-friendly than the $20-30 lockers referenced above. Basic idea is that you put an RFID chip in your wallet, on your phone, or wear the provided bracelet, and then just swipe that over the safe to open it. Mechanical keyed lock is also provided as a backup. Highly recommended. Even the braided steel cable is thicker and higher quality than the aforementioned products. You pay for it, but it is money well spent. Not sure how I'd never heard of these before a few weeks ago, but they are the bomb. You can find a youtube review here. I will be buying many more of these. They also have wall-mount versions for shotguns and AR-15s.

u/offshell · 2 pointsr/CCW

I noticed someone else recommend Liberty Safe, and though I'm sure they were recommending the full size options, I was browsing and noticed their pistol boxes. The Liberty biometric smart vault for handguns looks exactly like the Inprint. I've actually had decent luck with the Inprint in terms of it reading the finger print. They are definitely just a box of thin sheet metal though. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but if I couldn't get a small normal gun safe, I'd consider the heaviest jewelry/document/cash style safe I could get, or maybe something like the Fort Knox pistol safe mounted somewhere.

u/snackshack · 7 pointsr/gundeals

This appears to be the same model with more pictures.

22 is obviously a stretch, but i think you could easily fit 15-18 in there. I actually have the 14 gun version of this. It's thin pot metal, but it keeps any kiddos/nosy guests out. My 16 inch ARs won't actually reach the barrel support, so they just lean against the corners. I'd say i can fit 10 rifles/shotguns in there without much problem. Adding a motion sensor light to the top really makes it easy to see inside as well.

Go to a sporting goods store and buy a gun transport case. You can get them between 10 and 20 dollars, they are the perfect size for a blood bowl team, and you can cut up the foam any way you want to make them fit. It really is the best and the cheapest way to do it.

I have a case for each of my blood bowl teams. Works out wonderful.

Actually, I am pretty sure this is the exact case I use:

Fits my full 16 man teams. If you have a mutation team with multiple mutated models per position you will probably need something bigger, but for 16 figs these work great.

u/MissionValleyMafia · 1 pointr/guns

For me, Locksaf is BY FAR the best I've tried, the finger print reader is fast adn accurate, the secondary lock is not easy to bypass like the tubular or wafer locks in other safes. Also the battery is only activated when you use the safe and you can change the battery externally but since it is only use when you access the safe it lasts forever.. I've had it for a month and It's really made me wish I didn't waste my time with anything else.

u/WhatPlantsCrave · 2 pointsr/CryptoCurrency

FYI OP, What you have there is a regular fire safe. As others have pointed out it's no good when it comes to burglars...but it's halfway decent at protecting papers and documents through a fire.

If you are worried about protection from fire and storing electronic media, DVD's etc...What you should have picked up is a fire safe rated to protect Media. They have SIGNIFICANTLY more fire protection/insulation and will give your device a much much better chance of surviving a fire. Not sure where you're located but here is one on Amazon.

Two more notes...remember fire is put out with water...so it wouldn't hurt to put your flash drive in a small watertight pelican case within your safe.
For those mentioning humidity in a safe this item does a great job and is reusable vs. many other other items which are one time use.

u/NCGunGuy · 2 pointsr/gundeals
  1. Good under bed slide out safe for long guns and handguns. Best all around I've seem so far is this one on Amazon Prime.

  2. Is it possible to find a better price than the Law Enforcement discount on either the M&P 9 or the M&P 9 compact?

  3. Raven Concealment Phantom for an M&P Shield.
u/JLARCAS · 4 pointsr/CCW

I bought this a few weeks ago.

This is the 2-pack version which is pretty awesome since both boxes use the same key (you get 2 keys per box, 4 total).

The box is pretty damn solid and works perfectly for what I need it for (same as you.. to keep in the car).

u/AllanonKvothe · 5 pointsr/CCW

This is what I use for my nightstand pistol Amazon - GunVault

Works great, can open it in the dark and no finicky fingerprint scanner (Though they have one with that option). Goes great in a drawer.

This would work good under the bed or on a closet shelf.

As far as what to use for a rifle... something like This under the bed or behind the headboard maybe?

u/sppotlight · 1 pointr/CCW

IMHO Vaultek makes the strongest small quick-access safes out there. I have (this one)[Vaultek Essential Series Quick Access Portable Safe Auto Open Lid Quick-Release Security Cable Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery (VE20 (Compact Safe)) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DCBWQ3V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WC53CbJWT4B5N] mounted in a bedside drawer, with a very curious little one of my own, it is well worth the (still reasonable) price.

Many gun shops offer introductory classes for people who are new to firearms and I highly recommend that as a place to start. They'll go over everything you need to know to get you shooting safely and then get you out on the firing line.

  1. Any lockbox will be fine for small children. Lots of options on Amazon - I use a SnapSafe in my truck.
  2. If you're purely wanting it for target shooting a .22 is a great way to go and definitely cheaper to feed.
  3. How long is a piece of string? How often are you shooting? Consider daily range fees vs range membership. What are you shooting? Where are you shooting? Ammo for a .22 is 4-10cpr (cents per round) vs 9mm which is around 20cpr. There's really no good averages to this question.
  4. Preowned is fine if you know what you're looking at. You can find some Youtube videos out there that talk about what to look for in used guns. For someone starting our purchasing new leaves less to worry about though.
u/man_made_explosion · 1 pointr/WA_guns
  1. I mean, maybe this doesn't carry weight with you, but I would say this is the clearest violation of your 2nd and 14th amendment rights and is a mirror image of poll taxes (see the 14th amendment and Harper v. Virginia State Board of Education) and/or current arguments about Voter ID laws (for reference, a state ID in Indiana, which requires gov't issued ID to vote, costs $13). Notably, debates about voter ID laws are ongoing, but many of the arguments against requiring ID are the same that I would make here: they constitute a burden to exercising your rights, particularly in a way that disparately impacts disenfranchised people.

To combine 4 and 5 for a second, thinking about someone who has minimal extra budget and is looking to buy a handgun for themselves. Let's say they can only afford a Hi-Point C9. With an MSRP of $150, that is something that someone who has a limited income might be able to afford. Lets say, plus a box of 50 rounds of ammo for $20 so they can practice shooting? thats $170 to protect themselves and/or their family. Now, lets be clear, this is far from what I would recommend to someone who can afford to spend more money, but $170 is a fair amount of money to some people. Now lets say they have to pay the $25 fee, so we are up to $195. And they need to buy a quick access safe because they have kids around the house but need to actually be able to access the firearm in case of an emergency. So that's another $85. We are now at 280, instead of $175; nearly a 50% jump in cost for someone who is already scraping by. and that's assuming they are just buying a pistol. If they want to buy a rifle, which by every measure other than concealability is a better tool to defend yourself with (and which you would prefer in a home defense scenario), your cost would look more like this:
    Rifle Cabinet, non-quick access - $125
HiPoint Carbine, again, hipoint not recommended, but the cheapest is MSRP of $315
Admin fee, aka tax - $25
Training Course, lets assume this concealed carry primer is comparable in scope/cost to what would be required by law? - $40
    Box of ammo - $20
That nets us out to $520; $190 more than would be otherwise necessitated.

Anyway, hopefully this was helpful. I want to say, I get that this comes from a perspective of someone who is staunchly pro-gun, but I would like to highlight that at least part of my journey of becoming pro-gun was because as I learned the technical, functional, and legal frameworks around firearms, I realized that much (90%) of the legislation being pushed would do little to impact gun violence, and actually importantly, suicide (raising awareness for mental health issues is one of the things I do when it comes to charity work).

Happy to answer any further questions and/or continue the discussion; sorry again for the slow response-- as you can tell, lots to cover here :)

The Sentry QAP1E might fit the bill depending on the size of the handgun you are wanting to secure. http://www.sentrysafe.com/Products/496/QAP1E_Digital_Pistol_Safe_

It has a backlit digital lock, barrel lock backup and includes hardware for mounting to a floor or shelf though you may need something self tapping to go through your cars floor. Its pretty well rated on Amazon.

Loaded & Holstered, on top of the bookcase in our bedroom (for now)

Two weeks ago I was folding laundry on our bed while my 3-1/2 year old daughter was was drawing on her iPad. She took her thumb our of her mouth, and asked, "daddy, what's that?" I asked what's what, so the puts her wet thumb on the finger print sensor of the [Original Gun Box] (https://www.amazon.com/GunBox-Biometric-Hand-Gun-Safe/dp/B00KC9LERC), that was on my night stand, and said "This."Guess what popped open (and was thankful empty)? Yeah, so now I'm trying to find a better solution.

u/instanteggrolls · 34 pointsr/CCW

Like you, I'm not going to break any lawful no-carry laws. I blow past "No guns allowed" signs all the time because in TX we are not obligated to abide those postings unless they fit the designated signage laws. But when it actually matters (like going into a school or post office), I want to lock it up in the car.

I use a small safe with a cable that is attached to anchor points under the driver seat of my vehicles. Yeah, it's not going to stop any would-be thieves with a set of bolt cutters. But it will keep your standard smash-n-grab type criminals from getting it. And at the end of the day, if my gun ever does get stolen, I at least want to be able to tell the police that my gun was securely locked in a safe and not just rattling around in my glove box.

Obviously you could go the more hardcore route and have a more expensive safe installed in your console or bolted securely somewhere else. But for my usage, that'd be overkill.

Edit: I think these are the ones I have.

u/Greenshardware · 1 pointr/guns

I use this SnapSafe

It is really cheap but does a fantastic job. It is extremely durable and would require just as much effort to open, if not more, than more expensive options. It includes a very serviceable cable to prevent the entire case from walking away.

Tavor barely fits with optic on. But it won't fit if you have a light or something on the side rail. Too wide. Will post pics if there is interest

u/ColdStoneCreamAustin · 0 pointsr/guns

Sounds like my safe.

When the safe is empty and you open the door, it will lean right onto the door. Full, it's not an issue. I'll probably get around to bolting it down some day.

However, I didn't really buy it to keep my guns safe. I live in one of the safest towns in the country, and I work out of my house. It's rare that someone isn't home. I basically own it for appearances.

On my pistol permit application (Erie County, NY), they ask how you store your firearms. I didn't want to tell the investigating officer that I leave my firearms lying around my room unsecured, especially considering I live 20 feet from a school. I figured $500 is a small price to pay for the right to defend myself in this shit-hole state.

Leaning towards this guy: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0063263R8

My main safe is in my basement - not too useful for me or my family since the bedroom is on the second floor. I have a small pistol safe, but pistols suck compared to long guns. I have a Mossberg 500 and an AR-15. I also have extremely limited closet space that I need to share with my wife -- house is >100 years old, and neither of the two closets in the house are original construction, so they weren't really planned, and are very small.

> Link to your cheap option?

There's any number of manufactures that make ones like this https://www.amazon.com/SnapSafe-75211-Portable-Measures-Approved/dp/B00TSQP8ZE/

You're not forcing one open with just your hands, there's no way to grip it good to wrench it open.

  • First someone has to find it under your car seat

  • Then when they slide it out you don't have a ton of length on the cable, they might get the whole thing out from underneat the seat plus a few inches

  • They then need a pry bar or some other lever, or something to cut the cable with

All of this is going to take far longer than people spend on car smash and grabs, in broad daylight, in a church parking lot.

I keep one of these in my master bath to the plumbing and I've had one in my past 3 vehicles and have zero hesitation storing a weapon system in one when I have to go into somewhere where it is illegal to carry.

Yeah if someone has tools and is sufficiently motivated, they'll get into it just like with everything. In the typical 10-30 second smash and grab, no flippin' way.

u/krathil · 15 pointsr/news

I understand where you're coming from because trigger locks are trash, but I'm talking about actually securing your shit with a pistol safe for quick access and a gun safe for everything else. Sure nothing is 100%, but keep the combo to yourself and that barrier will be enough to keep your kids out, and bolt it down and it will prevent theft from burglars.

u/TheBurningOak · 1 pointr/CCW

This worries me specifically because if you leave your keys somewhere, now your kids have access. The same thing worries me about the bracelet safe too. I personally use a Sentry quick access safe that uses fingerprints, a code and a key. The key goes in my big gun safe in case batteries die. With this method, there is ZERO chance my firearms can be accessed without my permission.
https://www.amazon.com/Sentry-Safe-Quick-Access-Cubic/dp/B00A75EVJO

u/7even2wenty · -2 pointsr/news

Rifle is my preferred tool. Pistol is for there’s someone already inside, rifle is for them beating on the door. I can use my pistol to fight to my rifle in a safe that uses a key. They also make quick access long gun safes. You can open this in 2 seconds or less: https://www.amazon.com/V-Line-31242-SA-Access-Keyless-42-Inch/dp/B000T2A6BW

u/FettPrime · 2 pointsr/CCW

> I think what you'd have to look at with that is how many stolen weapons where used in homicides?

We typically trust Government numbers on issues such as this, as they are seen a neutral for both the left and the right (FBI and Labor statistics come to mind). Unfortunately, the Federal Government has 0 dollars to research gun violence statistics in the US, so we will never know the actual numbers. If you go with the numbers used in this politifact article (gathered by John Hopkins using self-reporting inmates):

  • In the 13 states with the fewest restrictions on gun ownership, 40 percent of inmates illegally obtained the gun they used

  • In the other 37 states, including New York state, 60 percent of inmates illegally procured the gun they used, Webster said.

  • About 48 percent of state prison inmates surveyed said they got the gun they used from a family member, friend, gun store, pawn shop, flea market, or gun show.

  • Forty percent of state prison inmates admitted they obtained the gun illegally on the black market, from a drug dealer, or by stealing it.

Those are some pretty high numbers, all things considered, which makes sense in many ways. How likely is it that a person that's robbing a convenience store for $146.32 took the time to go through a background check and buy the $250.00 9mm legally?

    > Me having my handgun locked in a safe is either very expensive for a quick access safe

This devolves the argument into "responsible gun ownership is too expensive/inconvenient.", which is the basis of a lot of anti-regulatory arguments. A good quick access safe costs $100 for a handgun. You can get a cabinet quick access safe for $250.00 if you need to store rifles. A person has the right to own a gun to protect themselves, but other individuals have the right not to get shot by stolen weapons because the owner couldn't be bothered to get a safe.

    > or greatly reduces the availability should I need to use it

The costs of a quick access safe is not prohibitively expensive, as stated above.
u/oznobz · 1 pointr/politics

Just because you live in constant paranoia doesn't excuse you being irresponsible with your gun. In fact, it probably makes it worse.

Edit:. If you keep your gun on you, it's not going to get stolen. If you need it close when you're sleeping, you should probably still keep it in a safe. Here's a recommendation. https://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-Pistol-Digital-Capacity-QAP1E/dp/B00A75EVJO
