🎓 Reddit experts on gun sights
The comments and opinions expressed on this page are written exclusively by redditors. To provide you with the most relevant data, we sourced opinions from the most knowledgeable Reddit users based the total number of upvotes and downvotes received across comments on subreddits where gun sights are discussed. For your reference and for the sake of transparency, here are the specialists whose opinions mattered the most in our ranking.
Hey, we can always try to help you. Ar15.com might have a better forum but that's a semi-closed off website compared to reddit.
Just from the looks of it the Sig Micro Red dot you posted looks a lot like an Aimpoint T2. The Aimpoint is top of the line (think, best you can really purchase) as far as quality is concerned. I'll be the first to admit I don't hear much good or bad about Sig Optics so I won't act like I know how well they hold up.
An entry level red dot would be something like the Holosun for 170$ compared to the 340$ you might pay for the Sig Dot you mentoined earlier.
In my opinion, there's three tiers of optics you can buy. You can buy horrible Chi-Com shit from China that will cost you 35$ total. You can buy entry level optics like the Holosun, Vortex, or Sig (low price to high), or you can go all in and get a top shelf optic like an Aimpoint, Trijicon, or [debatably] an EoTech.
If you're worried about "overpaying" for low quality, but you're willing to spend 350-400, buying an Aimpoint PRO would be right in your realm. You'll receive extremely high quality glass for a decent price. They retain their value over the years, and if your husband knows anything about firearms, he'll be super happy with throwing it on a rifle. (edit: your post history says your husband is familiar with Special Operations Units, so I know he'll have heard of Aimpoint).
Buying him a Holosun or the Sig red dot would be a good alternative, but if you can justify it in your budget, get him something you know he'll be happy with. An Aimpoint is hard to beat. He can save up another 200$, re-sell the PRO and upgrade himself to a Aimpoint Micro if he's looking for that style of optic down the road.
If you're planning on spending more than $150 just save your money and save up for a premium optic like an Aimpoint, EOTech, Leupold, or Trijicon. If you're looking in the 100-150 range, Holosun makes a great solar/battery powered red dot that holds zero well and has a 30-50k hour battery life(when it's actually in battery mode). If you're looking for a more traditional optic, Bushnell and Nikon have good 1-4x optics. If you're looking for more magnification a Leupold
is within your reach. Vortex has strong offerings in both red dots and traditional optics if you're willing to spend a just bit more. If you're looking in the 50-150 range I'd look into a TRS-25 or Primary Arms for a red dot. For a traditional scope i'd stick with a fixed power optic like this Bushnell, you're going to be hard pressed to find a decent magnified optic with good glass in this price range, fixed power scopes are simpler in construction and offer at least better durability but i'd consider sticking to a non magnified optic under the $100 range. If you're trying to spend even less than $50 there is apparently a very well made $20 Fieldsport which is worth a search on youtube. I wouldn't consider anything magnified under $50 but this is a good range for a cool carry handle with elevation adjustment and retro look. Shooting irons can be more fun than using optics sometimes.
These are for real steel guns, and feel really solid, I have no doubt they'll work on GBBRs, but I have an aeg, so I can't base that on personal experience.
I have a Sightmark Ultra Shot QD and it's fantastic. Big glass, multiple reticle, really solid, bright(works in direct sunlight), qd works. I'm very happy with it.
They also make a non-digital non-qd version that's even cheaper, but I really like the QD.
Good luck
I use a LaserLyte for my G19 (and one for my AR-15). It's a little pricey and only lets you do first shot training, but I feel like that's the most important thing to work on anyway.
I have both the reaction targets and the can targets. The reaction time targets are great! I like to set them both up in a room and then walk outside; when I hear the beep I open the door, have to acquire the right target and fire before it times out (3-4 seconds). If they both go off at the same time, I treat it like a malfunction drill by slamming the mag before racking the slide to reset the firing pin. The cans have to be set up each time and are pretty light sensitive, so I don't use them quite as often.
I did have an issue with the 9mm laser within the first 200 "rounds". After racking the slide, the laser was off almost 4" at 5 yards, so it defeated the purpose. LaserLyte said it is usually just wear on the o-rings and sent replacements. When that didn't fix it, they paid for shipping both ways for a whole new laser and a bunch of batteries.
>You need to come up with a decent (non UTG airsoft shit) rail set up too. Do you actually mount anything beside a VFG? Do you even use a scope?
As far as optics go, I have this BSA 4x30 scope which I have used off and on between my Saiga and my AR15. I also have this Eotech XPS2, and this Bushnell TRS-25 red dot came in the mail today. The Eotech mainly stays on my AR, but I am excited to try out the TRS-25 on my Saiga - I've heard these work well. The Soviet style side mount hasn't worked well for me (mainly because the mount I bought was a piece of crap), so I was looking for something I could mount further forward.
As far as UTG goes, I understand there is a lot of resentment towards their company - but it seems just like the same type of blind resentment people have against Sigmas and Taurus'... People hate on things they've never tried or owned. I'm not saying that's the case with you, but it is with a lot of people. Leaper's / UTG is most definitely not an airsoft exclusive company, the majority of their products are geared for hunting/real steel shooting (real steel/hunting scopes, mil-spec buffer tubes, charging handles, rifle furniture, things that wouldn't work on airsoft guns/only work on real firearms, etc...). Although Leaper's (UTG) makes Airsoft accessories and items, the Saiga 7.62 quadrail is made for real steel firearms. I'm not even sure if anyone out there even makes a Saiga 7.62 airsoft gun?
I just have to ask you: have you even tried the UTG quadrail? I can understand hating on a company cause they've been branded as airsoft only but... you should really give it a chance before you knock it. It's light, it's sturdy, and it stays put. What else could be asked for in a rail? It's so tight, it hasn't budged a fraction of a millimeter since I put it on 3 years ago.
>Several good companies make Ace style stocks and once you have an internal ace adapter in place, you can mount all sorts of stocks, for example, mount a Magpul CTR stock and have it fold to either side. You will just never be able to go back to a standard AK stock.
>Also, this company makes decent AK folding mechanisms, which don't require you to cut the "tang" and are still nice and low profile:
I would love a CTR stock and one of those AR stock adapters, those look awesome. Forgive me for being forward here, but I just can't see myself anytime soon dropping $200-$300 on a stock & adapter for a rifle that originally cost me $250. I would love to do it, if I had the funds though. You can clearly see I made / converted this rifle on a budget :D
Are you going to put an RMR or Holosun on it? If yes then you need suppressor sights. If you plan to only do red dot then blacked out sights would be the most budget route. Ameriglo blacked out suppressor sights
I picked up some of these Ameriglo suppressor sights with Orange front dot but realized even tho I like the orange front sight I’m not a fan of the blackout rear sights. So next time around will go for these Ameriglo 3 dot suppressor sights
If you aren’t going red dot and are just happy to have that option, I recently bought these Meprolight Tru-Dot Night Sights for my Glock 19 and they’re only $47 on Amazon. I also picked up these TRUGLO Fiber-Optic Sights but I’m not really a fan of Fiber optics and I gave them to my friend for his Polymer80 build.
Not sure about comps. I can’t have them in CA, but I’ve bookmarked a few for when I move out of state. Legion Precision, Killer Innovations, Archon Manufacturing, Tyrant Designs T-Comp, Agency Arms (Brownells 11% coupon code “HAA”), or Arc Division Arc Sparc.
If you want to do without the threaded barrel, Dark Hour Defense makes a rail mounted comp.
Lasers are only used with night vision, and messing with your cat. If you’re ballin on a budget, here are some good options for you.

maybe somthing like this along with a cheap red dot will work for ya?
You would need to use eaither a punch or a sight pusher to instal it and I think it would leave the gap behind the dovetail... assuming the dovetail is strong enough on its own because normally there is a good bit more metal there on a firearm.
so far this RDS has held up to the recoil of 5.7x28 on my PS90 and 9mm from my beretta though I can not attest to how well it would hold up in the feild nor battery life, I may end up shooting it to peices, but I do want to get a good micro red dot for my 92 if I really do like shooting with this one.
Another thing, I am assuming that this is a GBB? it may not be powerful enough to push the slide with the sight. This added a good bit of weight to my 92's slide and I have had it not go into battery twice now, but I don't know if it was ammo related (I kinda doubt but I was shooting reloads) or the new recoil spring thing I put in it (it dampens the recoil quite a bit due to being 2 part with 2 springs instead of one guide rod and one spring)
Yeah, I tend to agree. I own several Glocks (ok, so I am obsessed) and the stock sights are bold and easy to pick up when target shooting. I added some truglo sights to a couple of mine and have been happy with them, too. I actually like those over the standard Glock tritium sights.
I wrote a review on this optic on amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/review/B014GBIZD2/R2TAEQS85579AF?ref_=glimp_1rv_cl
I love Holosun optics and trust them. I also love Vortex. I think you won't regret either decision.
I put the standard trijicon 3 dots on my glock 19. You're in a hurry so this won't be much help but for anyone else who's interested in Trijicons they are sold on amazon. If you use camelcamelcamel and set a pricewatch you can save some $$$.
I bought mine when they dropped to $65.
Pricewatch link just add your email
http://camelcamelcamel.com/Glock-Pistol-Front-Night-Sight/product/B000LJUS4I
You can also install the sights yourself if needed. I used this tool and some locktight on the front.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000O5ILUM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And for the back I padded a friends vise and grabbed the slide and tapped it out with a cheap brass punch set from harbor freight.
I highly recommend the accupoint. I have several TR20 3-9's.
This is my recomendation for a good quality mid to long range magnified optic for something like an AR-15 paired with a fixed offset iron sight for short range targets. This would be a strong budget minded configration you will be very happy with.
Trijicon TR20-2G AccuPoint 3-9X40Mm Riflescope, 1" Main Tube, Mil-Dot Crosshair Reticle with Green Dot, $569

Ozark Armament 45 Degree Offset Backup Iron Sights $29

You rotate the gun from 12:00 to 1:30 to switch between sighting systems which is very fast and looks gangster. refer to my video,

This is a great deal on a Holosun HS503C on sale for $160
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014GBIZD2/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I also recommend the Vortex Sparc 2 and Sparc AR, or a Bushnell TRS-25 if you're on a budget, or the new Primary Arms Gen 3 1-6x KISS reticle scope, which I just got a couple of weeks ago and I really like it.
I started a thread on it here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ar15/comments/6birw7/new_primary_arms_16x_kiss_scope/?st=j2up50kb&sh=4899cc26
Vortex SPARC AR
Or
Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot
Or
HOLOSUN HS403B
All are good, but for the prices the Primary Arms or Holosun are a better bet due to the 50k hours battery life.
Then buy a lightweight magnifier with QD mount so you can either leave it on our take it off depending on your current setup or shooting preference.
That's all pretty much in the $300 range for both the dot and the magnifier.
I went with Truglo TFOs for both my G27 and G19, i absolutely love the look of them, the actual sight picture, and they are BRIGHT. got them off amazon on sale for around 75$ i believe, you would want the same ones i got for my 19. http://www.amazon.com/Truglo-Glock-Low-Handgun-Sight/dp/B001ASZSVW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323176396&sr=8-1
I like the StrikeFire 2 myself, plus a free hat!
Sparc 2 with free hat!
If you wanted to go with TruGlo TFO's you would be looking at about $78.
I think you would be better off waiting a little longer to get some sights that you really like and are going to function better. I really like the Meprolights I have on another gun as well, they are a touch cheaper mentioned here.
As far as a scope I'm not really that informed. You should definitely go check that forum though and just search for scope because they have some very knowledgeable people and it's solely focused on the 15-22.
I actually just ordered a dot sight for mine. I've read some really good reviews on it and I'm excited to try it out once it gets here.
It uses a plate in place of the rear sight which you have to tap out with a hammer. Pretty easy to do

I don't feel like going further, but you get the idea. You can't charge as if its new because its not. You can ask whatever you want and you may get an offer, but you are more than likely not going to sell for that price.
Good luck.
I recently picked up one of these off Amazon. Even comes with a 1" riser. Worked great and was plenty bright enough even with snow still on the ground.
Safety glasses should be strong enough. Check if there are any markings that say "ANSI rated". If you have a paintball mask that will definitely work though, and I would go with that. If you get shot in the tooth there is a good chance that it will crack/be damaged. Not something you want to mess with.
Red dots/ACOG/magnifying sights are plenty useful. You can get a pretty decent NCStar sight for $25. There is also one for $10 if you want a better primary or sidearm, or something else. For a pseudo-ACOG this will work. For a holo (I prefer these over red dots as they give a better sight picture and reticle) this should be fine.
What kind of gun do you like? M4, AK, G36C, MP5, etc.
What kind of pistol? 1911, Glock, M9, p226, etc.
Is that Canadian dollars or USD?
Edit: Problem with Canadian airsoft is that everything is 2-3 times more expensive. So if you can, buy from a U.S. retailer and go for the "Canadian legal" option, and they should adjust it for you, albeit at an extra fee. But $30 is nothing compared to the $200 it might cost to get the same gun in canada.
Edit 2: I'm retarded and can't Canadian airsoft. Evike offers this service for $8, which should make the trip over the border easy. The only other additional fee would be buying an upgraded spring, but that's extremely cheap.
Dunno what a good price is but it's also $359 on Amazon with free 1 day delivery.

Oh yeah, there's actually a staggering variety of designs that are all just that design, but with different branding and price points (here's one that's even cheaper). Same for most varieties of red/green-dot sights, you can spend $100 on a red-dot with a riser... or $36 for what is basically the same thing (though the more expensive one does come with rubberized "armor" that includes lens caps), and I'm sure you could find cheaper/even more expensive versions of what is basically the same product than that, I was just quickly finding an example (to whit: randomly spotted this while pulling up another URL just now).
This scope costs the same amount of money to purchase as the Rival "red-dot" sight does, but it's the genuine article - "genuine" of course only in the sense that it actually a red/green-dot scope and not a toy-grade semi-functional replica of one, I'm certain given that price point that it's a cheaply manufactured Chinese knock-off of a much more expensive design (that was probably also made in China in the first place, because most things are)... but the point is that we are used to toys costing nearly as much as the various fully functional optics I've been linking to in this reply, so we presume that the real thing by necessity must be crazy expensive. While that certainly can be the case, it's really more of a matter of the toys being enormously over-priced and under-functional.

This one seems pretty nice, comes with a riser as well
Sorry to break it to you, but there is a lot more competition in the sup $200 micro red dot market.
They are all more or less excellent. I prefer the Vortex because it has an unbeatable warranty.
Ain't the best sight on the market. But it is for an upgrade from your factory sight. These are normally $55 - $60. You're getting them at the price of regular sight. Great for CCW.
Personally, I preferred adjustable sights and red dots only because I am a lame perfectionist who likes to shoot at really long distance into really tiny holes. Give them a try plus return shipping is free. Look up some reviews on youtube before buying. Here are some reviews on Amazon.
I bought a set of these...for which I know I will be crucified as a AR blaspheme:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B017KYJB0I?psc=1
I bought them under the name Aukmont, but it looks like they just get churned out in China and company names/logos get slapped on by whoever happens to get em.
I like them, they do their job, have a lot of adjustment capability.

A HUGE thanks to u/frankietwofingers as I would have never been able to get to this point without all his help. There were lots of people who helped me get to this point but he was an integral asset and I want to give a huge shoutout to him.
I absolutely love how this things shoots, the accuracy and follow up shots kinda blew me away, I am very satisfied with this gun. Looking forward to putting some more rounds through it.
The only problems i had were the SGM mag not loading the last round (the glock mag did just fine) and the lower had a LRBHO which did not allow the BCG to pull all the way back due to the ramped BCG. i had to shave some metal off of the bolt stop which allowed the BCG to come all the way back. No problems whatsoever now that ive made these adjustments.

I bought mine for around $50. It's been holding up quite well on the shotgun. Still sighted. I haven't had any issues with it falling off or screws loosening. I imagine some blue loctite would fix that.
The build quality is OK. I dropped it once from about waist high and it dented the hood. Fortunately, I sent it back to Amazon for a replacement. Something to keep in mind.

Amazon prices (You may be able to find cheaper elsewhere):
Just ordered the standard (non-HD) Trijicons off Amazon for $90 for my G26. I picked these over the HD both for the price and because they are similar to the night sights on my P229 Elite which I love.
I use this cheap scope on my Ruger 10/22 and this red dot on my Marlin. They're both dirt cheap, and rock solid for me. I wouldn't trust them on anything more powerful than a .22 though. My buddy loved the red dot so much he bought one to put on his M&P15-22.
Found this which looks like a TRS-25 with a UTG riser. Same or similar one available on US Amazon has good reviews.
Honestly if you specifically need/want a holo-sight I would save up. $115 is not that much more for a huge jump in quality: http://www.amazon.com/EOTech-512-A65-Tactical-HOLOgraphic-Batteries/dp/B000KKFVRC
Buy once cry once.
Holosun micro red dots are very lightweight and have battery lives approaching aim points. Almost all are sub-$200 and some models have solar panels that will work in daylight even without a battery. My brother has been using one on an AR for two or three years with no issues.

Personally I'd save some money and get a Vortex. The Strikefire II is a great red dot at less than half the price. I've used Aimpoints at work for qualifying and on my issued rifle, but I personally couldn't justify the price for the minor differences in the sight.

Ok, I'll be the asshole. If you don't plan on using irons long term, don't mess with irons. If you want a good entry optic get a Strikefire red dot to test the waters, they're much cheaper than the Trijicon and EoTechs, but are just as quality.

All you need is a cheap red dot sight (there's no recoil on a camera so your cheap sight isn't going to lose its zero), a short section of picatinny rail, and a hotshoe to 1/4" tripod adapter. You'll have to drill and tap the rail section to 1/4"x20 and once it's all put together and aligned superglue everything together so it doesn't move. I had the pic rail left over from another project so I saved ten bucks there. You obviously don't need 10" of picatinny rail so just cut off as much as you want. For extra cool points use an Eotech
The lens is a Rokinon 500mm mirror lens.
I support this comment. This one is my favorite
unless you're buying used, /r/airsoftmarket, you're going to be importing it from China, as L3 Technologies has cracked down hard on their copyright. If you're going for a similar look, the Sightmark Ultra Shot is the most budget i'd go.
Unless the thing is completely trashed, I wouldn't expect to find a genuine EOTech for $100. They hold value as they're well made. Expect to pay around $400
Here you go (PDF warning). Free Glock Dry Fire Kit from the folks at Dillon.
That will help some.
Honestly, for about $300 you can get an entry level SIRT gun and LaserLyte Reaction Targets or Reactive Targets. That's roughly 1500 rounds of ammo worth of training time you can do inside all the time. Rain. Snow. Insomnia. Wife wants to watch Gossip Girl.
At the moment I'm in a long, narrow apartment so I marked off several distances from the door where I hung the targets and made myself an indoor range.
The SIRT gun trigger is very Glock-like. It's got a dummy magazine you can adjust to feel like your carry ammo. It fits your holsters. You can hang a light off it because it has a rail. Hell, if you have money to burn, you can remove the sights and replace them with what you have on your carry gun.
Very worthwhile investment.
Amazon has them cheaper just FYI

I don't use a full laserlyte system.
I use this.
And combine it with this and this.
That way I'm using my real gun with its trigger break, etc.
Faaaaantastic for dry-fire practice.
Do that daily with nice slow, precise, control and it will absolutely perfect your live fire shooting.
But I wouldn't train with the system in the OP listing. I'm sure it's nice, but I'd rather use my own weapon.

Basically I think a more realistic hardcore would be fun, but some of these options would turn it into a simulation style game which doesn't fit the flow of battlefield, while others like battery life or hearing protection breaking aren't even possibilities in real life battles.
TruGlo TFO. If buying on Amazon, read description carefully cause some aren't tritium fiber optic.

an optic would be good. I bought a Leapers Red Dot sight. For less than $50, it 's pretty good IMO.
It won't give you any magnification but it should be accurate up to 50 yards if you zero it in properly.
Note if you havent done so already: When you attach your mount, make sure you degreased the screws that came with the rails and the holes on the receiver. Then use a hollowground screw to attach them (take it from me, those screws strip very easily) after you put some RED Loctite on the screws.

I was considering the Vortex Sparc II paired with the Vortex VMX-3T
for the 16" AR. Does anyone have any experience with these optics?
Also I'm looking for a lightweight reflex/ red dot for the AR pistol- any suggestions?
I don't think its an EoTech, I think it's a sightmark, that is the way you mount them.

$368 on amazon
This ends up cheaper because this distributor doesn't charge tax. Of course you are supposed to claim that on your taxes at the end of the year...
The vortex strikefire 2 is the cheapest I would go..

Depends on how much you're getting paid per kill. They're $429 with free shipping on Amazon:

Don't.
If you want a red dot buy this.
If you want a scope buy this.
Cheap combos are a waste of money.
This is the wrong game to start crying "It's not realistic" with. Don't get me started on the ballistics or weapon handling of the game let alone a camera that can not only see shoeprints but also track them and tell you who is wearing what shoes. Or the fact that you can pull 2 variable size steel reinforcements in your back pocket along with infinite wooden barricades. But I suppose that is more realistic than a solar powered sight.
Right now glaz is broken, either you remove his thermal sight and go back or you find a way to make it play better with the rest of the game. How about you make Smoke's smoke block his thermal sight. Or have it run out of battery, or like OP is suggesting have it solar powered.

Optics are not necessary, it really depends on your preference. AKs have (arguably) some of the worst iron sights of all rifles, that's why I recommended a optic. Some people use irons, some don't even aim at all, they just shoot and correct. I personally use a red dot.
Most people tend to use replica Aimpoint T1 red dots. We commonly recommend saving a little more and getting a low end real steel optic like the Bushnell, Primary Arms, or Holosun. All of these are based on the T1 design, are are meant to function on real firearms.
I just bought a Glock 19 this weekend, and found a good deal on night sights on Amazon since everyone and their mother recommends replacing stock sights.
