PRENATAL:

If you sister has a healthy pregnancy, and is able to remain active till the end, she won't need much more than a supportive friend and a sympathetic ear while she vents about how much pregnancy sucks. :) But also, backrubs and foot rubs feel AMAZING in the third trimester!

Organize a baby shower for her. (Protip: asking for frozen meals for the mom-to-be for postpartum use in lieu of cute baby shoes or other junk can be a lifesaver).

Discuss her birth plan with her, and get informed about the whole process. Does she want a natural birth?

When she goes into labor, she will need somebody to go to the hospital with her and stay with her until at least half a day after the birth. Will you be able to do that? Start working your fingers out, they will need to be extra-strong for her to squeeze during contractions!

POSTPARTUM:

This is the most important part. This is where you step in like the awesome hero you are, and be a total lifesaver.

The new mom will be practically bed-bound for at least two weeks after giving birth, and this is if everything goes perfectly with the birth. For c-sections, excessive tearing, hemhorraging or other complications during childbirth, her rest period will be longer.

So she will need someone to take care of meals, household chores, and for the first few days after the birth someone to help with basic personal hygiene (walk her to the toilet/shower and back, run a sitz bath for her). It will help her greatly if you can move in with her and take care of this stuff.

Do not listen if she says she feels fine. I gave birth last week and felt seriously great in less than 48 hours... so I thought I'd vacuum my carpets. BAD IDEA. I hemhorraged a great deal of blood and threw my back off so badly I was totally bed-bound for two days after. It's not even like my vacuum is all that heavy!

So... Basic rule: for the first two weeks after the birth, make her get lots of rest and just care for/nurse the baby.

Especially if she has a c-section but even if she does not, a belly binder is an ENORMOUS comfort for new moms. It offers much-needed lumbar support and holds in a jiggly belly, preventing hernias. It also helps lessen the pain of a cramping uterus. Bonus: it helps return bellies and widened hips to a pre-pregnancy state quicker! I have been using this binder day and night, and can strongly recommend it. Be sure to buy one size down. Start her using it immediately after birth.

Don't sweat the babycare too much. Babies don't need much, especially in the first few weeks. All they do is eat and sleep and poop and burp. The new mom can be in charge of most of it, though she will probbaly appreciate help with the diaper changes (and feeding if the baby will be bottle-fed) occasionally. Go with whatever works organically for your situation. You might need to take over a little more (diaper changes, mixing up formula, cleaning the breast pump and bottles, whatever applies) if the mom had a c-section or complicated birth.

I was actually going to write a post sharing my favorites, but I just hadn't gotten around to it yet!

I have this support belt and it is awesome. I had a wimpier one in my first pregnancy and it was definitely inferior. I think starting with the support early helps reduce problems later.

I also got the pregnancy support tank and it is great. It's not hardcore, but it is really nice support. Good for wearing all day. I was interested in this one too, but it only goes up to a size large, and I needed an XL. But I like the cut of it.

I had only one at 32, via c-section as well. Similar situation as far as living 20-25min away from the NICU where my babe is. We’ve formed a routine over the last 3 weeks (he’s still learning to take the bottle). Recovery is hard, but I can share what’s worked for us.

Re: c-section — You’ll likely be walking quite a bit. As hard as this seems, I think it’s partially what led me to a quick healing process. Tylenol and Ibuprofen are going to be life for a couple weeks. I wore a belly band about a week after surgery. This made a huge difference in how I was able to move around. Granny panties (the cheap kind from Hanes work well...I joked w/my husband when we were looking at the store, “I want my belly button to disappear” bc that’s how high they went) are super helpful as well. If you can sleep somewhat elevated, it helped me in getting in and out of bed for about the first two weeks. My morning coffee also has a scoop of collagen in it; I’m not a doctor, but I have healed really well & I think this has helped, possibly. I’ve tried to rest when I can, walk when I have to, and accept all the crazy changes I have no control over.

I also attempt to control the little things. My phone’s alarms were set up every few hours and labeled either “Ibuprofen/Motrin + pump” or “Tylenol + pump.” I can send you my exact routine if you’re interested. I pump 8-10x/day and am currently producing just enough for my 35+4 little man, so I’m not stellar but I’m still going. I keep reminding myself that my only goal is to keep pumping and I’ll worry about production more once he’s actually home.

Re: visits to the hospital — Not being able to sleep there has been one of the biggest challenges for us, especially with me healing from a c-section. We’re also trying to budget, so eating at the hospital 2-3x/day isn’t ideal either. We have a daily schedule to visit for two of his cares, one at 9am and the other at 3pm. This gives me the opportunity to have some broken sleep (yay for pumping) and we eat at home. I sometimes squeeze in a nap before the 3pm visit, which helps. We also plan on staying in between visits once he gets closer to coming home.

Having the slight breaks gives us time to take care of our dogs, the house, and attempt to nest bc that didn’t happen how I had planned before he decided to make an appearance. Not to mention, we had moved to an new state just three weeks before I went into labor. This new routine is now just our normal. We do what we can and that’s all we can do. Sending you hugs bc I know this can feel challenging, but I’m told it will be over before we know it.

no those are the bella bands, I don't think they provide as much support. The ones I am going for are more like this it's supposed to provide super support for your abdominal muscles and your back post delivery and help your belly shrink to its pre-pregnancy size faster, they are also recommended after abdominal surgery (like a c-section, though they're still very useful for bellies after vaginal births) for extra support. The Bella-band is for during pregnancy, though I have a belly support right now (different brand) that I love, they are definitely a big help.

I'm usually too tired to respond to any threads when I read here at night lol but I wanted to respond to you because we're the same size pre-pregnancy, and I also am all belly (although I've gained 27 pounds so not truly all belly, but it feels and looks like it!). I bought it in a medium and it's perfect. It's velcro so pretty easy to be adjusted to fit your size.

I will say that maternity belts aren't that comfortable to wear when sitting down; I don't wear mine to work because I have a desk job and I can't sit in it all day. I do wear it when being active at all though, even if it's just light cleaning or running errands. It really helps!

I know you probably won't be able to find these exact products, but hopefully it gives you an idea of what to look for.

Beyond bracing, physical therapy is usually the biggest help. Strengthening the muscles helps them be able to hold the joints in place and compensate for loose joints / ligaments. These are usually going to be different exercises than the kinds of things you would be doing while lifting weights at the gym. For me, many of the exercises I do involve lying on a mat and using an exercise ball (for things related to my hips) or using exercise bands (for my shoulders). I've heard that exercising in the water is also good because it's easier on the joints, but I haven't tried that.

They spread a little bit. I can fit into some pants but not others. Mainly the ones that were super tight to begin with. My body is the same but different 🤷🏻‍♀️ I say it’s better because it’s accomplished something amazing.

One thing I’d really suggest to all new mamas is the Shrinkx belly wrap. I started wearing it the same day I gave birth. It made a huge difference in helping shrink my belly and my uterus.

I also got an . SI belt recently and its surprisingly helpful. I often sublux my SI joint when I'm cleaning so I've started preemptively wearing the belt. You wear it wrapped around where your back dimples are (or where they would be if you had them). This is the one I got:

I had a surprise c section and it was a bit traumatizing. If its scheduled I'm sure you'll fare much better.

-set alarms on your phone to schedule taking meds. I didn't need to finish off all my pain pills. The first week was the worst, and it got a little better each day.

-I personally had no issues pooping (YAY) but take the colace and get a squatty potty or footstool.

-Uber Eats gift card, no one is cooking. Order in. lol

-Check with your doctor, but once you are fully healed, like after 6 weeks, start massaging your scar. This is supposed to help reconnect the nerves and reduce scar tissue swelling.

My Dr did a great job on the surgery. I had 50 hours of labor and had surgery at 1150pm. The scar is barely visible really. I did have some pains for months after which I heard is fairly common. If you have pains or discomfort, it usually subsides before the year is over. Also, take advantage of the high-waist everything fad. lol high waist panties, high waist leggings, high waist jeans, high waist lingerie....

Agree with the foam roller for IT band. You can also use a tennis or lacrosse ball to massage your piriformis - sit on the ball and roll until you find the sore area like with the foam roller.

For sciatica, I find that wearing this particular support belt is super helpful. The trick is to wear it horizontal - like parallel to the ground - around your hips rather than around your lower back.

I did a search for this topic just last week. A better option is checking r/beyondthebump for post partum belly bands. A lot of women here are pregnant with their first now, and haven't used one yet.

They are really good for supporting the hips and lower back while you realign your center of gravity, once your belly is gone. They can be very inexpensive if you don't need the fancy ones.

I'm on mobile in the bathtub currently, so my apologies if that doesn't link easily! It's an expensive belt, so if you can get it through insurance, that's the way to go. I have two and alternate them. This one is nice because you do have the option of wearing it against your skin( mine is too sensitive) and its washable. I alternate between two of them. I have one for work and one for home/sleep.

Also, for all the ladies on this sub, women's health physical therapy is a thing! They are going to help you out better than any regular PT like myself, especially if you have issues postpartum!!! I went to one myself because this pain was out of my league!

I'm going to second the straps/gait belt for this first part of her illness, especially since you are in the getting stronger phase. It is essentially a belt you put around her waist to give you better leverage/grip in helping her to get up out of a seat. If she still needs your support after that it provides some place for your hands to be for balance and grip should she start to falter. There are videos online to teach the best ways to use them and you can always as a PT if she is seeing one.

I think it will be an asset to you while she still has use of her legs to maintain her independence and keep some strain off of your back.

The one I use is called Serola. I find though it doesn't help much with sitting but helps with walking around quite a bit. Sitting for long periods killed me. I ended up leaving my desk job on short term disability around week 34. Alternating sitting/standing/laying down at home works best. Lots of pelvic floor exercises. Also just keeping your legs together as much as possible. I find rolling over in bed much easier is i squeeze the pillow between my legs tightly. Getting out of the car I keep my legs together and swing around to get out. Really just thinking about basic movements like this has helped the pain a lot. Also the pubis/SI joints can move out easily so avoid anything too heavy especially weight being carried unevenly. (For example a laundry basket on one hip) Try and keep your hips centered as much as you can. Hope this helps, here is a link to the belt I use.

Oh WOW, you're having twins and a c-section? I'd feel pretty certain they'd give you one at the hospital, if only because it would be awfully uncomfortable without one. I actually asked my doctor about seeing a physical therapist, because we have a center associated with my university clinic and it's only a $15 co-pay per visit. She recommended trying the belt first and so far that is doing the trick. I just bought a super cheapie one. I'll definitely switch to the PT if that stops being effective.

It really depends on the type of problems you are having. Diastases issue? The recommendation is a standard pregnancy belt. If you are having pelvic and sacral instability then an SI belt is probably recommended. They do make a modified verson of the two molded into one such as this one. Hope that helps a bit.

I bought a support belt, which was very helpful and I highly recommend! I know that helped me tack some extra weeks on there. If I'd been more consistent with it I think I could've gone even longer, but I'm glad I kept it up at least a little bit.

My baby was a low rider so I invested in a belt in second trimester. It worked great for me. Not sure this is what you want or need, but I used this product and have no complaints. I am not sure your size and if that is a factor in what belt type you need, so I apologize if this is not helpful.... but I personally liked my simple, easy belt. :) Edit to add: relieved hip pain as well.

I bought a cheap velcro one on Amazon, and I do love it, it helps immediately and immensely, however, adjusting the velcro is pretty difficult, so it's a little awkward to wear. It bends when I sit down and pokes into my skin and I have to keep adjusting it. You pay for what you get, though. Looking at the diagrams, though, it appears I'm not wearing it right coughs

It works best if you wear it against your skin, under your underwear and clothes. It fits best under sweatpants or loose pants. Mine doesn't fit under jeans or pants without stretch. The Physio told me NEVER to wear it while sleeping or lying down, but you can wear it the rest of the time... especially while sitting on the couch for long periods or while doing housework or grocery shopping, etc. Don't make it too tight, just snug. Give the belt at least a week, adjust it slightly up or down, or tighter or looser until you find a spot that feels comfortable. Some days I wear mine a bit higher, some days a bit lower. If you have Salonpas gel or patches, or Biofreeze, or IcyHot.. try rubbing it on all the spots that hurt the most. The tingly cold feeling helps distract from the pain, if nothing else. Ice packs are good and heating pads.

I’m not sure where you live, but in the US doctors are not taught much about SI joints. I have found that the Orthopedic surgeons never really consider anything but your spine. It’s as if the pelvis doesn’t exist to them. I was checked for a labral tear as well, but there was nothing on the MRIs/Xrays. If you can find a Physiatrist/Osteopathic doctor they would be the ones to know about SI joints and hypermobility and can probably refer you to the right kind of physical therapist. I had an SI joint injury before getting pregnant and it's only gotten worse the more pregnant I've become. The chiropractor provided temporary relief but even that started to fail. I tried stretches, strengthening exercises, heat, ice, massage, and finally physical therapy. The physical therapy helped the most because she taught me how to brace muscles in my abdomen/pelvic floor to minimize movement in my back when I'd have to get up or down. There are cheaper ones but this one has been the best in terms of support and not slipping. I still feel pain but I'm at least mobile now and not trapped sitting on a stool in a very specific position or on my side in bed.

Thanks! TBH I really shouldn't complain, mine is the serola belt and it's really low profile in the scheme of things. My issue is specific to my SI joints and no brace is really gonna keep everything in place by itself, so the belt serves as a support. If I ever have to have surgery I'm guessing I will get something much more substantial!

I have the Gabrialla and like it a lot, particularly for running. I have to take it off when I do squats or if I'm going to do a lot of bending over, though, so it's not an all-around exercise support belt (at least not in my experience).

I found it pretty cheap on Amazon. I went with this one as it was recommended for activity, and I'm still running 5 times a week. The real test will be wearing it tomorrow for a run. Medela also has one that looked good but reviews said it had a habit of rolling down a lot.

I am doing a modified pelvic tilt and it helps me. I keep my knees not too spread out, lift my butt up as much as I can without it being painful and squeeze.

I am currently lying in bed with my SI belt on! It really helps with getting in and out of bed and tossing/turning. This is the one my PT recommended:

I think all three therapies probably helped. I didn't trust chiropractors going in, but after each session I did feel more stable, so it did something. The massage was nice but probably the least directly helpful, but who knows. The physical therapy has helped with some other hip pain actually, but that one is slow going for the tailbone pain. No matter what I figure strengthening the pelvic floor is good in general. Oh, and it's important to find doctors that know how to deal with pregnant women. I had to ask around for those recommendations.

But I've noticed it's still not good to sit on it for long periods of time.

I had that towards the end of my first trimester, it stopped for a bit, and now it's flaring up again. I found that a pregnancy support belt (like this one) helped me quite a bit.

I actually also found it very useful for another reason - I just started wearing maternity pants, but they have a bad habit of getting loose and sagging. Strapping this belt on top helps them stay up!

I use an SI belt (specifically, my PT recommended this one) when I sleep, and I think it's been helpful. I have a lot of sternum and clavicle pain, especially in the mornings. Look into costochondritis - the cartilage that holds your ribcage together may be inflamed or irritated from hypermobility. My PT told me that commonly, the sternum and clavicle are some of the first things to start shifting around when your pelvis/SI joints are shifting. They're definitely connected. To help with the chest pain, I've started sleeping with a teddy bear that I can wedge under my chest (I'm a side sleeper) to prevent my shoulders from collapsing at night. It's been really helpful.

I got a cheap one on Amazon, works fine for me. Link below, I think someone on here recommended it.

When I go to the bathroom, I just pull it up. I also prefer wearing it with a dress vs. my full-panel maternity pants, though it works with the pants too.

Finally, I found that the belt really helps when I'm standing or walking, but actually hurts to wear while sitting. So during most of the day, when I'm primarily sitting, I don't wear it, so bathroom runs aren't an issue at all.

Try an SI belt? I've been using the Serola one, and it helps with low back pain... and it also makes my legs feel a lot stronger, if that makes sense. The first time I put it on I kind of felt like I had discovered a new superpower (the feeling didn't last: I got used to it, but it was really cool for the first few days I had the brace).

The downside is that the brace is a bit uncomfortable and chafes a bit near the bones at the front of the pelvis (iliac crest, maybe?), even over clothing. I don't know if that's just this belt, or if all of them do that. It's also kind of unflattering - causes muffin top and weird bulges. But it does work, and it works well enough that I'm willing to put up with the negatives.

Are you going to a physical therapist? I have sciatica and several herniated discs in my back. I've been going once a month up until recently, and we've upped to once every two weeks (due to increased pain bc my body is finally changing - I didn't show until late, I'm 24 weeks now and still barely showing). We expect to be once, or even twice, a week by the time I'm delivering.

Edit to add: My PT had me get a SI joint band (I got this one from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NIFVLW) that I wear whenever I walk long distances - so I can still take our pupper for a walk and stuff. It's magic - if I forget to put it on I can hardly walk a mile, if I wear it I can walk however far I want. It's to help combat the relaxin spreading my hips apart, which causes pain when you do a lot of walking bc they're out of alignment.

I had this around 17 weeks, primarily on the right side and could barely walk. I wore a si-loc hip belt I found on amazon 24/7, did some core strengthening, went to chiro and acupuncture, and it eased up and went away completely after a couple weeks. 37 weeks now and so thankful for just regular general aches and pains. I remember sobbing to my husband terrified that the pain wouldn't go away! I'm so sorry and I hope yours resolves soon!

Laying down is the worst for me too. I've started dreading the nights because I know I am going to wake up about a 100 times to change sides because my hip pain is so bad. Sometimes a pillow between the knees helps, and sometimes it seems to make things worse. I usually end up switching throughout the night. I always use something to prop my stomach though.

A hot water bottle between the thighs helps a bit with the pain (either while sitting or in bed), and I bought this belt thing and wearing it (around the hips) during the day seems to help with the nighttime pain. Also, I've found that I actually do feel better in bed on days I've been more active, even though I do get sore and tired easy from walking around.

The exercises from this study seem to help a bit too.
