Top Reddit comments about Household Dust Mops & Pads:

u/iammenotu Ā· 1 pointr/Frugal

I have the Libman Spray mop, which essentially is a refillable Swiffer. I used to a Swiffer and loved it, but got really tired of constantly paying such a high price for the refills and the mop pads, especially since the mop pads would only seemingly clean about half the kitchen floor before needing to be tossed. Anyhoo, I love, love, love this thing, and like the OP, have two reusable, cleanable mop pads. I use one and rinse it out in the sink occasionally as I'm cleaning the house, then throw it in the laundry and just keep rotating the two. I also have a nubbly one I use for dry dust mopping. I have an approximately 1300 sf home with wood floors throughout, except bathroom which is tile.

Anyhoo! I think O'Cedar brand and Rubbermaid also make a version. I would definitely recommend a system like this to anyone, especially if you have lots of floors to mop. I think it's definitely the quickest, best and most economical (for me anyway) way to get the floors nice and clean. This is coming from someone who has two kids and 3 very furry kitties.

u/ThatOneEntYouKnow Ā· 7 pointsr/minimalism

I've gone round and round on this myself. I think it boils down to how 'clean' things need to be in order to keep you happy. I'm a neat freak. Clorox wipes + Softscrub take care of most of my cleaning needs, but there's a good number of specialty items I get because they simplify my life, and simple is pretty close to minimal for me.

For example, just yesterday I made what is likely a non-minimalist purchase to most: Vinyl floor polish. I used ammonia to strip the floors ($1.25 and 3 hours of scrubbing), but the polish most certainly was not. $12 for a bottle that I'll use maybe once while living in this house. The balance for me is that my scuffed up, dirt-encrusted floors are now sparkling clean and a near mirror shine.

Another one I can think of is toilet tabs... the ones that make the water blue. It means I only have to scrub the toilet every couple of weeks instead of every week and have never had to deal with limescale. I bought a bulk pack and now have to store them in the linen closet, but it was worth it for the time I save to spend on other things.

As far as a simplified kit goes: Clorox wipes are my daily surface cleaner (could be subbed for a jug of any cleaner in a spray bottle, but my roommates won't use it if it's not super-easy), and Soft Scrub w/ Bleach is for the deep clean. I have a pack of scouring pads but found I don't need them, a small plastic bristle brush takes care of most of the scrubbing. The Soft Scrub is great for every surface in the bathroom and kitchen once a week. I have a jug of ammonia for the windows and stainless appliances as needed. Vinegar is already highly used in my kitchen and it can be used for a lot of the same things as ammonia. I have an 8-Pack of dish cloths that serve as my rags and paper towels, and a flip-mop for everything the floors need. I personally avoid soap for everyday cleaning since I notice the streaks and soap scum build up, and it doesn't sterilize/sanitize.

I bought multi-packs of each of these items or big jugs to keep it cheap, and keep them all in a white bucket under the sink / in the closet. I haven't needed additional cleaning supplies other than the wipes in about 3 years now. Even the wipes work out to about $0.04 each, and I use 3-5 in a day.

> What are you using for power?

I only have a single 15A circuit in there right now, but I have a very easy run from the breaker panel to the shed. I'm going to pull a piece of 12-3 in for two 20A circuits in multi-wire branch configuration.

> How are you venting and intake of air?

I'm glad you asked that, because I have a question about equipment. I'll use a typical 6" variable speed blower and carbon filter. There is space in the gable right above the closet where it will fit nicely. I'm going to draw and vent air into the shed space, which is passively vented to the outdoors. My question: What are people using to filter air at the intake? I was going to use one of these.

> I would water proof the floor and half the walls going up, something easy to wipe and spray down.

The floor of the closet will be 1/2" plywood on top of foam board. The interior of the closet will be clad with 1/4" plywood. The ceiling will be 3/4" plywood built for hanging things from. I will caulk, prime, and paint with flat white ceiling paint. It wont be "water proof", but it will withstand a spray down and scrub. Does that seem adequate?

> Are you in a legal grow state?

Uh, that's a negative. Hence the discreet build. I'm following the "no tell, no smell, no sell" strategy. You guys and my wife are the only ones who know about this. My adjacent neighbors are right on top of me, so it's important that odor is handled properly. I have very friendly and curious neighbor a few doors down, which means that I had to sneak all of my construction materials from the truck to the shed. If he saw me moving all of that foam board in, he would come over to "help".

> Good luck

Hey, thanks.

u/dweezil22 Ā· 9 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Bona's great. I've also like Weiman Floor Cleaner. I'd say even more important is a good
pro grade dry mop for regular dust/grit cleanup (not any of that Swiffer BS). You should be able to find it cheaper at your local hardware store.

Story time: We custom built our house and at the end of the build the GC brought in one hardcore middle aged lady that spent 2-3 days cleaning the ENTIRE damn house from construction zone to spotless. She was superhuman. I was doing touchup painting and made sure to be very respectful of not dirtying up rooms that she had already cleaned and apparently she really appreciated it, as she left one of her dry mops with a nice note wishing us luck in our new house and saying this dry mop was the most important thing we'd need. She was right, you can dry mop an entire floor of the house in just a few minutes and it takes it from "this floor is covered in grit and cat hair" to "nice and clean". Then just proper mop occasionally. If you go too long between proper mops, it can be nice to steam mop to get the tough dirt that won't easily mop out.

You look wonderful today, did you do something new to your hair?

You should get this can opener is made of good thick steel, it's heavy in the hand and I have never had a problem opening a can with one. Bonus, it has a bottle opener on it.

And this is an excellent liquid measuring cup.

You may also want some of the following:

Hand soap for the kitchen and bathroom sinks, hand towels.
You need basic first aid stuff, like adhesive bandages (band-aids) and rubbing alcohol, good tweezers. Include basic pain meds, stuff for an upset stomach, allergy meds, or any prescription medications you need.

Sponges and scrub brushes. If you want to use a swifter type thing, I'd like to recommend this I have used it to clean offices and it works. The handle is pretty heavy duty and you can make or buy extra cleaning cloths, then you just put them in the washer.

Oh a colander, I will admit I picked that one because it's cute.

I love my rice cooker I use it to steam vegetables or cook rice at least once a week. I have the larger version but that one would probably work, or the larger one.

I could use one of the following: Notebook or Scissors or a Book.

u/InactiveBlacksmith Ā· 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Bought a house a year ago from a pair of chain smokers. They were also there about 20 years.

I'd recommend cleaning the walls before priming and painting. I had the most success with an ammonia solution like Windex. However the recommended general purpose wall cleaner on this board is TSP. You should be seeing a big yellow stain on whatever you wipe with. That's nicotine. We used a microfiber dust mop like this.

Laminate and tile didn't seem to absorb much if any odor. Carpet and padding did so make sure it was replaced.

Also check if the windows were cleaned. Make sure you have good ventilation during all this cleaning.

I apologize for the formatting, I'm on mobile.

Mop handle: fiberglass, tough as shit.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004MDM950/ref=psdcmw_10802561_t1_B005KD5UYS

Rubbermaid mop heads: again, wash ( regular or gentle, not heavy) and hang dry.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005KDEMRE/ref=psdcmw_10802561_t2_B005KD3XDS

Wring bucket: sturdy, can take alot of use and you can replace the wringer and bucket separately, altho it's going to be at couple years before the wringer needs replaced.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00006ICOK/ref=psdcmw_10802561_t1_B00GJ0Q47S

It seems expensive but it's one of those buy for life things.

Dust mop handle: snaps on to the wire frame. You can even replace the pole for like a 8$

https://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Commercial-Snap-Handle-Natural/dp/B005KD92l

Dust mop frame : easy to maneuver, low profile, basically lasts forever even if you run over it with a floor scrubber or gator.:
https://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Snap-Wire-Dust-Frame/dp/B005KDDKTK?th=1&psc=1

Dust mops ; you have two options, cloth and microfiber. Both have their strengths and weakness. Both can be washed and hung. Cloth ones last longer and are better for larger spaces and pick up bigger bits of things better.

Microfiber is good if you don't accumulate alot of dirt and dust, works well with pet hair.

Synthetic cloth: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005KD2PQY/ref=psdcmw_10802561_t2_B005KD92SI?th=1&psc=1

Microfiber dust mops need a different frame and handle. They are lighter and thinner but feel light compared to the synthetic cloth and wire frames. The frame relies on a type of velcro grip. Eventually that wears out and you have to replace the heads and handles/frames more often.

For home use, 18/24 inch width should be sufficient.

I swear I'm not a shill. I've just had alot of exp with commercial cleaning products and equipment.

May I recommend something that totally changed my PMS life?

Microwavable seed/grain plush toys pillows. Yes. Microwavable apple seed plush toy pillows. They are pillows. They are cute. They are shaped like a plush animal. They have seeds inside which get warm in the microwave and give heat for 1/2-1 hour. They are REALLY nice to lay on your belly or put between your back and the back of a chair.

If you need to stay on your feet (I'm so sorry!) they make reusable warmable inserts you can wrap around your waist under your clothes.

But for the home? Go wild:

Looks like a commercial vinyl tile. If so, it should be stripped and waxed on occasion for the best look:

You basically purchase a diluted stripping solution, mix it with water and mop on and let sit for a couple minutes. Something like this:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-1-Gal-Heavy-Duty-Floor-Stripper-ZULFFS128/203144888

You scrub the old wax and dirt off - in a commercial setting you would use a big mechanical buffer... however you can purchase something called a Doodle Bug. If you don't want any extra gear, a good bristled scrub brush should to. A knockoff Doodle Bug can be found on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071K69X26/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_emBxDb9T0YYEV

Wash the stripper and dirt up as much as possible (squeegees are a blessing) and then mop on some wax/polish and let dry:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/ZEP-1-Gal-High-Traffic-Floor-Polish-ZUHTFF128/202860171

In a commercial setting I'd be putting floor sealer on before the wax and burnishing the final coat with a high RPM floor burnisher to harden the wax... but it isn't critical in a home.

Source: Managed 25 institutional buildings with over 100 janitorial staff and I was intrigued by vinyl tile floor care. Did you know that a mechanical floor buffer can throw you across the room if you don't hold it right? Lol.

We have a 2 story, 3 bed/3bath house and I do all the cleaning. It takes me about 2 hours. A robot vacuum cleaner like roomba or shark vac helps me out tremendously. I have both and prefer the sh tork over roomba.

Another cleaning product that is great for picking up hair, dust and even glitter is 3M Sweep and Dust sheets. The sheets are a little tacky, which makes it easier to grab almost anything, especially hard to reach area. I use it in the restroom, between the blinds, and every crevices around the house (window, door frame, under bed/cabinet, on furniture, etc.). Hair is one of the biggest complaint guest would mention in their review, so this product actually helps me grab any that I may have missed one I do one final sweep at the end of my cleaning.

3M Easy Trap Duster - Sweep and Dust Sheets, 5" x 6" Sheets; 60 Sheets/Roll https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BN7OVYY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_oshnDbWMY84AD

I suggest a steam mop for deeper cleaning.

For casual weekly cleaning or whatever I have a reusable Libman mop. Basically it's a Swifer that you fill yourself and wash the pad.

I make this homemade cleaner and it works wonders.

I have original hardwood floors from the 1930's and I swear by the techniques above. It's both gentle and effective.

Do not use Murphy's Oil Soap unless your floors are unfinished wood floors!

u/P00P135 Ā· 1 pointr/gpumining

Air purifier inside the tent won't do anything really. There will be too much turbulent air flow that it would be lucky to trap particles that fly by the intake. Best bet is to use filter media on the intake fan of the tent. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Horti-Control-DS4-Dust-Shroom/dp/B0046UWI14/?th=1

u/johnny5_is_alive Ā· 3 pointsr/lifehacks

Oooo.....yeah swiffer won't work on the popcorn/texture ceiling.

Maybe try a dry microfiber dry mop, something like this.
Or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment...

I'm just not big on the idea of blowing dust everywhere; because that means I'd have to clean all the other surfaces twice as good.

u/vomitCow Ā· 2 pointsr/rarepuppers

Owner of a husky here! Iā€™ve been using the Furminator deshedding shampoo and conditioner when I give her a bath. Along with brushing every other day, the hair becomes somewhat manageable. These sheets are also a lot better than using lint rollers to get hair off your clothes and furniture. I also have this car seat cover which helps with hair in my car. Also makes it a lot easier to keep my car clean after a day at the dog beach.

Swiffer also makes a pet version of their dry sheets that attracts pet hair like a magnet. Iā€™d vacuum everyday, but sheā€™s afraid of the vacuum.

u/glitchbox Ā· 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Try the [ProMist Microfiber Spray Mop by O-Cedar] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HBCIR6/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_mh1gtb14FRKMP)

I have laminate flooring from ikea and have used this mop without fail for the past 2 years. If I want to scrub the floors I use one of those double sided microfiber dishcloths with the netting and attach it to the bottom of the mop (the pads attach with velcro). It works great, and won't damage your floors.

u/hayberry Ā· 5 pointsr/starterpacks

https://www.amazon.com/Easily-Greener-Swiffer-Reusable-Washable/dp/B009MPA3AG?th=1#customerReviews

Or, even better, tear up natural fiber unwanted clothes/textiles and use those, composting them when done. Wool, felted in the washer/dryer is especially good for this.

i really recommend getting a dust mop and some additional heads. https://www.amazon.com/Libman-00195-Microfiber-Dust-Mop/dp/B00FVZ8XNU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499011981&sr=8-1&keywords=libman+dust+mop

you can pick up whatever it doesn't pick up with a dust-buster type vac. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R1P3WNE/ref=psdc_510112_t1_B01K1XNVW4

i also got one of these the other day and have used it a lot because i don't have to bust out a mop and bucket. I usually put a 50/50 fabuloso/water mix in the jug on the handle. https://www.amazon.com/Libman-CO-4002-Freedom-Spray/dp/B004GI9ZZS

i wish i had known about this set up earlier. they essentially replicate the functions of a swiffer without generating as much waste. it's easier and faster which makes me clean more often. All the heads are machine washable but i've ended up buying two of each.

u/jhonotan1 Ā· 2 pointsr/internetparents

I would get the dust out with a flat dust mop, like this one. Once the dust is gone, a wet Swiffer should work. You could also attach a microfiber cloth with cleaner to the Swiffer, if you don't feel like those disposable cloths do the trick.
