Lots of great advice on here! Congrats on your new house! I fully support living with an S.O. to get a feel for your chemistry as housemates. Things I always found helpful that nobody else has mentioned yet:

  • ironing board and iron. We have one that goes over the back of the door.
  • A really decent vacuum cleaner, especially if you have carpeting. If you can swing it, get a new one that's highly rated. My first 8 years living in various places with S.O.s and roommates I went through 8-10 $40 walmart vacuum cleaners that barely did any good. When we bought our precious baby shark I was astonished as how well it does its damned job!
  • a dustbuster
  • Lamps. Overhead lighting can get really tiresome, and there's nothing that makes a space cozier than the right kind of lighting. We hit up goodwills and thrift stores and got some decent lamps for our space.
  • Somewhere for guests (and you) to store shoes and coats. Your cleaning will be easier if you take off your shoes at the door, and ask guests to do so as well. We have a cubby bin.
  • Don't overlook the merits of things that have multiple uses. Extra storage is no laughing matter. If you get a couch, consider a futon (so you have a place for guests to sleep).
  • Window treatments can go a VERY long way towards making a space feel complete and homey.
  • Splurge on your bedding. Seriously. Buy the nicest mattress, pillows, sheets and pillowcases you can afford. Getting a great night's sleep and looking forward to bed time is a great way to get settled in, and also make intimate snuggle time much nicer.

Enjoy your new home and space! Don't forget to get artwork or pictures on the walls ASAP so the space feels less overwhelming. Get organizational bins and boxes/tubs to put things that don't have a home yet, and keep your space less cluttered. If you cook, get a crockpot! Enjoy building your space together.

TL;DR: Your mind matters more than your appearance, but if you're not going into software, don't get dreadlocks. Thrift a few dress shirts and a suit that fits. Try them on. Go back until you find something fits. TJ Maxx has dress shoes on the cheap. Buy a steamer!

-------

If you're in a city, go to a thrift store. Find five or six OBDs (Oxford button downs) like this. Go try them on. They should fit to your wrist, not strangle you, and not make you look like you're wearing your dad's clothes. Keep one or two that fit well and don't have missing buttons or obvious tears/ wear. Find slacks that feel comfortable, aren't too baggy, and are khaki, navy blue, or some other conservative color. Rock pink once you feel more comfortable.

Try to find a suit (jacket and slacks on the same hanger made of the same material... don't piece together two different things) that fits at the wrists, isn't too tight, and doesn't hug too tight. Get charcoal or navy. Don't get somethings that was clearly used in a 1980s documentary about pimps of the lower east side.

Buy a shirt that doesn't have a collar that buttons down. Here's an example. This shirt will go underneath your new suit. Buy a tie that matches.

This should cost you a grand total of $40 max at a thrift store. It may take a while. Go every week until you find something that works. Visit different thrift stores. If they're a "vintage" store, they're too pricey. Go to Goodwill.

Go to TJ MAXX or Marshall's or whatever and buy a pair of dress-ish shoes for $35 or $60 bucks. They should look like this. Buy black ones if you've got a black suit, or brown ones if your suit is gray or blue.

Now you should look like a slightly shabbier version of this weird illustration.

Internship wear on the first day is the OBD (oxford button down) plus the slacks, plus a belt, plus your fancy shoes.

Interview wear is what was in the weird illustration: suit, tie, dress shirt that doesn't button at the collar, and fancy shoes.

Secret tip that will help forever: buy a GARMENT STEAMER! Your button down shirts and suits can always get steamed, and it'll take those little creases out that nobody points out, but makes the difference between looking "sharp" and looking "shabby". A $2 shirt from Goodwill that's well-pressed or steamed looks better than a $150 shirt from some mall or men's store that's wrinkled.

A steamer is nice because you don't really have to know what your doing and there's no settings to fiddle with. An iron can ruin a suit, but steam can't really.

If you're not in software engineering, don't get dreadlocks.

For an iron that will last a long time and perform well, get a heavy iron that has a good steam and spray function so you can dampen your shirts adequately before you iron. All irons you'll look at will have a water tank, but not all sprays are equal- some suck. Some irons drip and drizzle water along with some steam, and better irons will produce a thick, heavy steam with lots of vapor. Also, some nicer irons will have different features, such as automatic shut-off if you leave the iron on for too long. For another example, this Oliso has an (unnecessary) "levitating" feature where you can leave the iron facing downward on your clothing and your clothes won't burn. Here is a video. Yes, it's a feature that adds parts that can potentially break, but it seems to get great reviews.

If you have cash to blow, consider some nicer iron like an Oliso. Rowenta also makes a nice one, not as pricey as an Oliso. If you're on a budget, don't worry about it so much, you can iron clothes with cheap stuff too. Just read reviews and make sure you're not looking at one that might break within a couple of years. A lot of the cheaper ones might start to leak after a year or two, for example.

Also, make sure to get a good ironing board. Get one with a mesh base so water doesn't soak into the board, and make sure it has enough padding up top so the mesh doesn't make an imprint on your clothing.

Suggestions would be based off your budget, but I'll throw in a vote for the Oliso line of irons, just because.

I don't have a dedicated sewing room, so I am looking at this table - it would hold the 2x2 pressing boards I DIY'ed this year, and when I'm mid project we could still eat at the dining room table. This one in particular, because it is height adjustable and having a counter height cutting table is the dream! Lifetime 4428

I go back and forth on the Panasonic 360 iron - love the cordlessness, but if you have to have the base because there's to way to stand it on end, doesn't that undo the perk of being cordless?

I also go back and forth on the accuquilt -I would be excited to get one on super clearance, but don't think I am that excited to actually BUY one. I read on some forum about someone finding them at their local Joann on the clearance rack for something like $20, and so now I always check for them, just in case. :)

I got bobbinis last year, and really like them, and this year I put peels and tulips on my list.

u/xomandark · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

steamers are the best - I bought a cheap one after hearing people rave about them here, but I need to upgrade it because I use it all the time. If you do have clothing that needs pressing and don't want to pay to have them pressed, Rowenta make amazing irons. I got this one after hearing recs for Rowenta and it's great. It automatically steams and adjusts heat and so far I haven't had any issues even on silk. It can also do vertical steaming, which I thought might make it a steamer replacement however it has to reheat after about 3 vertical steams. So it's great for steaming out accidental iron wrinkles, but I'm keeping a dedicated steamer on hand for most of my steaming.

u/sevendots · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

Tip for everyone who online shops: negative reviews are the most helpful reviews. Are the majority of negative reviews clearly from morons? Product is probably pretty good. Irons tend to leak if you tilt them too much instead of hold them horizontal, for example. Can I be a sarcastic asshole? When water leaks onto your garment, what I like to do is heat up the garment with a really hot, flat object (irons work great at this, btw). Also, when a Rowenta iron has 1600 positive reviews and 160 negatives- then it's good.

Rowenta makes great irons. Many negative reviews mention quality control is better on their models that are made in Germany though. Get a Made in Germany Rowenta if you can help it.

Oliso is on sale, if you want to browse another good brand with fancy technology that you don't need.

u/arth33 · 3 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I can't recommend Rowentas as a BIFL product. Rowentas (even the German made ones) have a reputation for working great for a while but ultimately breaking down within a year or two. I have seen this myself with a made in Germany DW9080. One only need look at the reviews on Amazon and you'll quickly notice that a lot of the great reviews are for new buyers who love the iron (it does feel and function wonderfully for a while) and the many negative reviews are longer-term users who's iron died after 12-15 months of use. I have a feeling that Rowenta's were built to last sometime ago and they gained a strong reputation, but the current irons are designed feature first and dependability second (I have no evidence of that last statement).

Having said that, I don't have anything else to suggest, cause I'm still searching for a solid replacement.

u/kall-e · 3 pointsr/sewing

If you're looking for a great heavy-duty, high-quality iron, I cannot speak highly enough of the Rowenta Steam Force.

I have been SO pleased with this iron. It's a bit on the more expensive side, but if your wife does a lot of sewing and ironing, I would say it's a must-have. It heats up quickly, doesn't leak, produces an amazing amount of steam, and has a nice weight to it as well.

u/Username_Used · 2 pointsr/malefashionadvice

This is a great iron

That being said, if you aren't using it correctly, then you'll still have issues. Make sure you are choosing the right heat setting for the fabric you have. If it is a blend use the lower setting of the two materials.

Steam. Steam is your friend. Another helpful trick is to keep a spray bottle of water handy. Lightly spray the clothing as your are ironing it. It helps to relax the fabric and then the heat releases it as extra steam and sets it in place.

Starch. Grandma always had a bottle of Niagara next to the ironing board and so should you. Keep those dress shirts tack sharp.

u/NYHNMV · 1 pointr/AskMen

Something like this, while a little more expensive, has more power, heat, and holds more water so it’ll do a better job and let you more easily steam your clothes. Highly recommend going a little more expensive on a steamer, though the handheld is perfect for travel!

u/thebeavertrilogy · 3 pointsr/Showerthoughts

We use steamers a lot, before we ship to a customer or when we unpack samples before hanging them up, and I have learned that you need one that makes a lot of steam. Small hand held ones are pretty ineffective. Rowenta Master Valet is really good. Pricey, but worth it, and better than some of the commercial steamers I have previously owned.

u/FloreHiems · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

The ones with the fully metal heads are indestructible and work so well. The metal head can help because it kind of doubles as an iron. This is a newer version of the exact one that has my heart!

u/antalog · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I got this one at Target originally (I think).

  1. Way faster than ironing.
  2. I also have a travel iron that takes for.ev.er to heat up and never actually steams my clothes well.
  3. I originally bought this for my clothing resale stuff, so I've used it on a ton of different fabrics and never had a problem.
  4. I'm 5'3 and it's taller than me, for sure lol
  5. Just surprised at how quickly it heats up and how well it works!
  6. I hate ironing with a fiery passion. This is so much better.
u/manux_ · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

I have this one and I love it; looks like the price went up since I made my purchase though :( The only other iron I had used before this was a super crappy Proctor-Silex iron though, so needless to say it was a night and day difference.

I should also note that the one above seems to be the 'Cadillac' model of Rowenta irons, and I would imagine that their slightly lower end models would also perform excellently. This appears to be an awfully similar model on the site you had linked originally; I couldn't tell you what the difference is between the 9030 and the 9080 though, perhaps another user can enlighten us.

u/mindtehgap · 6 pointsr/malefashionadvice

The best thing I ever did ironing-wise was to buy a decent quality iron. I highly recommend this iron by Rowenta. It's 1700 watts so it puts out steam like nobody's business, which makes your ironing time considerably shorter. Plus it's made in Germany, not China, which is a huge plus to me.

u/Aurora-class · 5 pointsr/videos

Yes, especially the steamer I have at home.

This is the Jiffy Metal Head Steamer I use at home every morning.

It's so powerful it'll get out any wrinkles on even the most difficult shirts that are super starchy. I'll steamer shirts with this first before putting them in my suitcase to go on a trip, and then I'll use my travel steamer to get those small wrinkles out once I arrive.

But day to day, you need a big steamer like this to get the job done.

u/pyrogirl · 2 pointsr/sewing

Budget? I got a gravity iron for Christmas, and it's AWESOME. It's the sort of iron that tailors and costume shops use. But, it is $110.

u/infinitediva · 3 pointsr/RepLadies

I bought this conair steamer on amazon a few years ago and love it!

u/galaxy_m104 · 70 pointsr/AskMen

A steam iron.

Ditch the heavy iron and the board! You'll never be more than 5-10 min away from wrinkle-free clothes and that helpful little purchase tucks away nicely in your luggage or day bag when you're taking a trip.

u/Bdazz · 1 pointr/quilting

I recently got my mom an Oliso steam iron and she absolutely LOVES it.

Is this a place to ask about garment steamers? I am looking to buy one for my clothes. Was wondering which one was better this one from Costco, Sams Club, or one of these from Amazon or this one

Some people set up a new email account only for ERAS so any email to that account was an important one. Or you can set up keyword detection in your main email.

Also, I'd recommend setting a different ringtone for that email address and set if for continuous push so you get it immediately and know it's not just a random spam mail.

Also, handheld steamers are gold.

You're a big girl now! For srs. I'm also a nurse, for srs.

You need a good ironing board, yo.

u/ozarkhome · 2 pointsr/fixit

If you can't get it to work again, [Rowenta] (https://www.amazon.com/Rowenta-Stainless-Soleplate-Accessories-1500-Watt/dp/B01M09YUSD/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1500462719&sr=8-8&keywords=hand-held+steamer) makes steamers and they are quite good quality.

Oops, I just realized you might be looking for steam cleaners rather than clothes steamers. Sorry!

u/fastfxmama · 2 pointsr/AskWomenOver30

Well, that's subjective I suppose. I don't get satisfaction from ironing, and get impatient with all the little fixes and set ups in the process of ironing one item. I also find the sound of opening or closing an ironing board to be really awful. Ironing is not satisfying to me, yet I feel satisfied when my kitchen is clean after putting in the work. Steaming takes about 5-10 seconds per item, so I feel satisfied when I have a bundle of pants, shirts and skirts on hangers that took me a few minutes to have "work ready". For me, it was a game changer in that I started wearing nicer clothes to work, instead of saving them for later because they needed ironing. It was a a life-hack for me. Maybe not for everyone. I use this:

https://ww.amazon.com/d/Garment-Steamers/Rowenta-Steamer-Clothes-Garment-Built/B009IMYS7M

u/nanosparticus · 6 pointsr/medicalschool

This one is the one that someone on this sub recommended. $20, and works in 2 minutes, small enough to fit in any travel bag with ease. The only issue I had with it is that I tilted it a couple of times and spilled on my clothes, but this is the first steamer I've ever used and I have a feeling that's more due to my stupidity than anything to do with the steamer itself.

TL;DR: get this travel steamer. It will change your life. Have fun watching wrinkles disappear before your very eyes!

I bought this one by Rowenta and love it. This model is $140 but there is a link in there to the $100 version too.
Rowenta on Amazon

u/cathpah · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

This is the one I have...with the metal head. I apparently paid $189 for it when I bought it, and it's now $199. This thing absolutely rules, I promise.

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/frugalmalefashion

Black and Decker D2030 and Wide ironing board like this one. look into the product reviews for the B&D and for the price it beats out most of the competition.

u/sooprvylyn · 3 pointsr/sewing

if you really plan to use it for sewing you should look into a gravity iron. They are roughly $100. They hold like a gallon of water and are designed to stay on for hours and hours while you sew.

u/11twenty2 · 5 pointsr/sewing

Do you mean the wire hinged piece? It looks like it is meant to keep your cord lifted and out of the way.

Nope, I already checked myself and that part, according to amazon is a hanger bar for hanging freshly ironed shirts.
Pics in use in the link.

I have this and I am very happy with it. I use it for most things (except where you need a sharp crease), and for blocking.

You shouldn't be paying that much. This is the model I got.

Don't know if it helps, but here is the cordless iron my SO researched and has on her Christmas wishlist.

u/cealion · 2 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

A fabric steamer would probably do the job.

I'm getting the Panasonic cordless iron when I replace mine.

If on ERAS you see a program listed as "Participating" but they do not have an NRMP code, it means it is pre-match.

u/KarmaBankruptcy · 9 pointsr/BuyItForLife

You want one the the made in Germany lines from Rowenta, such as http://www.amazon.com/Rowenta-DW9080-Steamium-Platinum-Soleplate/dp/B002MCYXA2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Although if your problem is that you iron plastic and get it stuck to the baseplate, a better iron might only be so much help. Its non-stick will be tougher than a cheap one and stand up to more cleaning, but maybe what you really need is a proper ironing board so you have an uncluttered, dedicated workspace and are not likely to iron plastic by accident.

u/rraaaarrl · 4 pointsr/femalefashionadvice

Mine isn't small, but I really love my Rowenta Compact Valet steamer. Rowenta also makes a hand-held travel steamer. Before that I had a Conair Extreme Steam that died after a week of extreme steaming on my part. I exchanged it for the Rowenta, no regrets.

u/ClaptrapPaddywhack · 6 pointsr/barstoolsports

I bought this steamer a while back and it shits all over ironing. You can take a shirt that's in a goddamned ball and have it looking good in 5 minutes. Plus you don't have to worry about creasing or scorching or handling a stupid fucking ironing board.

And they're easy as fuck to use. Just literally move the nozzle over the wrinkles.

EDIT - typo
