My boyfriend went through similar struggles with keto vs sweet tooth. Two things helped: keto crepes, and keto french toast. I've this posted before, but think it's worth putting here because it helped us significantly:

This Specific Faux Maple Syrup -- It takes like Mrs. Butterworths. No, it does not taste like the fancy Canadian-tapped stuff, but hot damn if it isn't guilt free and great. Don't get the Vanilla flavored one, it's gross.

This Monkfruit Sweetener -- They sell this at Whole Foods, but where I am it's cheaper on Amazon. This sweetener doesn't have the aftertaste that erythritol sweeteners had and has less of that strange, "cool" mouthfeel. It works well for us in small amounts and the substitute for sugar is 1:1.

This Crepe Recipe -- I add a splash of vanilla to the batter in the blender. I find it helps smooth and thin it out to get a real crepe-like consistency in the pan. Make sure you do the circular wrist movement thing with the pan to spread the batter out all thinlike. These work well for sweet or savory dishes, but also are AWESOME stacked on top of eachother with layers of mascarpone/creamcheese/no-sugar-whipped-cream to make a "crepe cake."

This Specific ThinSlim Bread -- The "honey" flavor is better than the "plain" flavor, in that it tastes more like a sweeter normal bread, while the plain one has a little more cardboard-taste in it. I use this to make french toast (make the batter thinner than you would otherwise, soak the bread longer than you would otherwise, do not toast the bread for best results.) I also use it to make grilled cheeses, which go great with tomato soup (I love this recipe) and pickles. Do not buy this bread on Amazon, buy it from ThinSlim. The cost on Amazon is much, much higher and the bread does not come as fresh.

The first rule to remember: Muscles are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen.

Let's assume you have exercise covered. What about diet? That is where a lot of people struggle. They go on a diet instead of making a change to their diet. That seems subtle, but it is an important hair to split.

If you haven't seen it, /r/keto is very popular right now as a way to get lean without necessarily getting mean. You aren't going to starve yourself, go on a juice cleanse, or only have unpleasant meals ahead for the foreseeable future. This is where you reboot your diet looking to get rid of empty sugar and loads of unneeded carbs.

Start by taking an inventory of what you eat for the day. You aren't going to be focused on the calories. Those will come later. For now, we only want to look at serving size, sugar, and total net carbs. You can look on the back of your favorite snacks to get an idea of it. Serving size is always important because some will try to be sketchy by placing 1/3oz or 1/3 container on the package. Unrealistically small portion sizes don't help us.

If you're like most people, you likely consume between 40 and 100+ carbs for every snack. In some cases, people are consuming hundreds of carbs per meal every day. That can be cut by 95% or more without struggling to find something to eat. It is even easier if you cook at home.

For breakfast, a low carb biscuit or low carb muffin could go with eggs, bacon, or other proteins. With sugar free syrup or jam/jelly, that is an on the go low carb breakfast that most won't mind.

For lunch, a low carb sandwich (low calorie bread is usually low carb!) is easy by checking your local grocery. Breads that advertise low calorie cut the sugar used in the recipe among other changes to reduce the carbs. You could cut 20-25g per slice down to 7g or lower.

For dinner, BBQ with sugar free sauces, have seafood with reduced sugar ketchup/cocktail sauce, or whatever you can dream up.

For dessert, sugar free chocolate syrup on top of no sugar added ice cream, whipped topping, strawberries, or even cheesecake made with low carb pie crust. By using real rare sugars instead of chemical sweeteners, you get better products that taste like their traditional counterparts. Allulose and Erythritol are a good place to start.

At this point, we will assume you have worked to cut your sugar intake down from hundreds of carbs per day to less than 20 - 40. After a few weeks of this, off the shelf processed savory foods with added sugar will taste overly sweet. That is how you know you're on the right track.

Once on keto (or very, very low carb), your body will be burning fat calories day by day. /r/fitness will have more on this idea, but it goes something like this:

Calculate your total daily energy expenditure, reduce your calories by a comfortable amount while maintaining strict watch on carbs (as few as possible!), and calculate the daily loss. If you're down 300 per day, you'll lose about 1 pound per week. That is some very solid progress that you can maintain over time.

Nice. I make one at home as well -- similar, but with fewer steps. I use espresso, coconut milk, canned pumpkin puree, maple sugar/vanilla sugar, and pumpkin spice blend (or cinnamon/nutmeg if I don't have any fancy blend on hand). Blend it, warm it, sprinkle cinnamon on top ... way better than starbucks.

I have really liked using maple sugar (http://www.amazon.com/Coombs-Family-Farms-25-Ounce-Container/dp/B000JJHDVG) rather than maple syrup in my lattes. So much easier to stir in, store, and clean up. Is there a downside to it that I'm not seeing?

Question I have -- why the coconut oil? I know some people like their coffee bulletproof, but why add coconut oil to a latte? Not sure what that is for?

I forgot to take a picture because I immediately ate them, but I had pancakes and syrup this morning for <400 calories. Regular pancakes that my husband enjoyed too- no protein powder, fancy flours, etc.

Here is the recipe. It also includes instructions for making pancake mix to save for later. I cut the recipe in half and got 6 pancakes that were a few inches in diameter. My serving of 3 pancakes was 362 calories.

To keep the calories in check, you have to use a quick spray of PAM cooking spray and either a cast iron pan (preferred) or a non-stick pan. My pancakes didn't get stuck. If you have a laser thermometer, you want a 375 degree F pan. Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup (~60 mL) to scoop your batter.

For my toppings, no butter (sorry!) I use Maple grove brand sugar free syrup. (ETA- it's 15 calories for a 1/4 cup.) Kroger and Meijer have it and so does Amazon. Fat free redi wip with sugar free smuckers jelly would also keep your count under 400 calories for breakfast. If you have confectioner's swerve, you could also dust that over them.

It really depends on the family.

It's the most popular in Quebec, where it's mostly made, and there are whole festivals and activities around it. We eat tire d'erable (Pulled maple syrup) which is syrup dropped onto snow, where it chills and becomes hard and taffy-like. Then you eat it off a stick. Traditional Québécois snack.

It's really only an important thing in Ontario and Quebec, and even then it's just a breakfast condiment that you use on the rare occasion you have pancakes or waffles.

Some families use a tonne, some never use it at all. Tourist shops always sell it, because people visiting Canada think it's some huge thing here. It's just... a sauce. For sweet breakfast food.

The best maple syrup comes in a can. This brand is the usual:

I mince or chop as usual when called for, but my family always crushed garlic in our unique way.

My mom always had one of my dad's old cane syrup bottles, cleaned thoroughly, and filled with water. Holding on to the square body of the bottle with one hand and the piece of garlic on a cutting board with the other, you beat the ever loving shit out of the peeled garlic using the cap end. The water in the bottle adds weight to help crush the garlic and really finely crushes it all. We had the same bottle for well over 15 years, the one before that got dropped and broke. When I moved out, I had my dad save a bottle for me and I do the same thing. It takes practice to not slam your fingers every time. My friends have commented how much they like my food with garlic that way because they can taste the flavor without getting chunks of it when they eat. I love garlic so I'm fine with any way it appears in my food. (Pickled garlic is a favorite.)

Honey could work but I imagine the final mix would be more brittle. I'm sure you could get grade B maple syrup online, no? Amazon starts at $10/pint.

I have not tried other oils but my feeling is that you could swap freely. There's a fair amount of coconut flavor from the shreds already and olive oil adds a nice green/floral element.

The Walden Farms Sugar-Free Syrup is quite good. I picked one up for ~3.50 at my local Central Market. It's not terribly thick and sticky like regular syrup, but it tastes really good for a sugar free syrup.

Yes! Here's what I actually use during training: Grade B Maple Syrup.

The reason I use it is because it tastes fantastic on long run or ride slogs, and isn't that weird consistency/generic bland taste that you get from gels. It's calorie dense, and you can buy gallons at a time for the price you'll pay for a single gel sleeve. I have a gel flask that I stick in my jersey pocket when out on long rides and fits neatly in my nutrition belt's pocket for long runs - has saved me from many a bonk. Then, in racing, since you know you handle it well, you can use any of the maple syrup sachets. Or maybe you can use a gel flask, I dunno. Didn't work for me when I tried it; lost my flask on the run course at like 2 miles in.

Even things like Canadian maple syrup are probably cheaper than you'd think. You don't even need a credit card to buy things on the Japanese Amazon. As soon as you get your bank account (first week for most JETs), you can order off Amazon and pay at the ATM.

    Also, shipping from https://amazon.com (Amazon America) is pretty affordable (but you need a credit card to do so). For example, I wanted a few board games (Sushi Go, Scrabble, ...) and picture books (We're all Wonders, Triangle, ...). While I could have bought them on the Japanese Amazon, it was about 50% cheaper to get them shipped from America. If you don't need something right away, it's always good to check.

Maple syrup needs to be boiled, and it's not like boiling water, it can foam up like crazy. Old school trick is to use milk as a defoamer. It's also filtered after, but of course, some of the oils from the milk might still be in the syrup, so they did their due dilligence and disclosed this to you, so you can make a choice to not buy it.

I think it's cool they actually are doing this the old school way, it's kind of refreshing, since they sell chemical defoamer, and these guys are using milk -

Honestly the maple syrup you have in your cupboard was probably made with the chemical defoamer, and it's probably got trace amounts of the "food grade" defoamer that wasn't disclosed.

I don't know but to us it is the only one that's 100% pure. The real stuff. If you guys come visit in eastern Canada one day I highly recommend to plunder the grocery store. It can be kept in the pantry for a long time.

This noatmeal recipe is pretty good. Add some of this for flavor, and it's pretty much oatmeal.

Also, this cereal is as close to cereal as you're going to get on keto.

This maple syrup is basically real maple syrup.

This is probably the best pancake recipe you're going to find, but it won't be exactly like regular pancakes.

This morning I mixed into the batter some smashed frozen raspberries and pecans. So good! Since I don't deal well with sugar I use Cary's sugar free maple syrup. Love that stuff but really the ingredients are a bit too fake for some people's taste. It doesn't cause any digestive issues whatsoever for me. Regular maple syrup is another more natural option.

Then it looks like it uses Sucralose for sweetening, and some reviewers mentioned it contained NO maltitol, so it should be good for a keto lifestyle. On Amazon it says it has 6g carbs, but 5 of those are from sugar alcohols, so you wouldn't count those 5.

This is a near 0 calorie syrup. I've tried some of their other products and they are decent.

I don't agree with sorbitol.
