ive been playing with throwing knives since i was a little kid. sometimes for laughs, my wife will toss things (old cd cases usually) in front of one of my targets and ill pin them to the targets. the kiddos always seem to get a kick out of it. i consider my knives toys. however if used correctly and with proper skill/training, they are very very deadly. personally, anything less than about 1ft for a throwing knife tells me that it doesnt have enough mass to carry the force im going to put into it. the smaller knives just plain dont penetrate enough. the ones i usually play with are fantastic. they easily go about 3 inches through a 2inch plywood sheet. i dont use traditional targets, i use asheet of plywood with an outline of a person with a map of the human circulatory system on it. something like this generally 1 puncture will not be enough to kill, but i suspect that somebody with a large knife sticking out of them, bleeding heavily will probably stop to reevaluate their priorities. 2 blades in any of thoes arteries at the same time, and a person starts leaking like a busted milk jug. when i practice with them, i generally keep 2 or 3 in my left hand that i can easily fan out for blocking and 1 in my right hand that i can strike with, putting 1 finger in the ring and holding it point down lets you use it traditional knife fighter style or swing it by the 1 finger with pretty surprising force. (about 2 inches deep into plywood) if you have a target at distance, you can easily tip the knife up and throw it, then grab another from your left hand to replace it. its alot faster and easier than you might think. the true flight knife that sonoflavey mentioned also looks decent, but ive practiced with screwdrivers before. pretty much anything with a little weight and a point works. in self defense terms, any heavyish aerodynamic piece of metal thrown hard enough is a fair deterrent and theyre just fun to play with. if you are going to play with them, why not play with them in a manner than makes them potentially useful? that said, since getting my concealed handguns licence, i much much prefer my .45, and the knives are pretty much just for fun.

Cold Steel True Flight Throwers are very good. Big and heavy knives are good to learn on. I own 5 and love them all, they take all the abuse you can give them. They are about $25 each.

Next I would say something like this Gil Hibben set. The stainless steel is not the best for throwing, but these are plenty thick enough. My friend owns a set of these and they are very fun to throw. 3 knives for $25

Finally I would recommend a cheap pack like this 6 pack for $20. I started with a 12 pack of knives similar to these because with 6 knives you can really get the proper technique down quickly because you don't have to walk to the target after every throw. Another benefit of these knives is that you don't have to worry about damaging them. I cringe when my $25 True Flights bounce off the ground, but I don't care about the cheapo ones.

If you want to look on your own, here are some things to look for.

• Steel: Make sure you know what steel the knives are made of. Many of the cheap sets will use terrible, flexible steel.
  
  
• Length: Long knives are easier to learn how to throw on and easier to throw in general.
  
  
• Width: Thin knives are generally worse to throw than thicker ones. They can snap and bend easily.
  
  
• Weight: Heavier the better. Light knives ricochet off of targets and can come back at you with quite a bit of speed. Heavier knives are also easier to stick because they have more mass and more kinetic energy.

Throwing knives are MY hobby!!

I don't know if you've just picked the hobby up, but I've got some suggestions for knives, just because I'm really excited to find someone else who likes them too:

Schrade SCTK3CP These are like cheating, it's damn near impossible to not get these knives to stick.

Cold Steel 80STK12 is a nice hefty knife, great for spin or no spin throwing, also the thud is extremely satisfiying.

United Cutlery United Throwing Triple Knife these were my first knives, and I still love them. They're great for spin throwing, and they look wicked. I don't know why they only have 1 star on Amazon, cuz I love mine.

Anyway, yes, knife throwing is fun, definitely a good alternative to a punching bag.

Hmm... that looks like a smaller version of what I used to throw, and the 6.5" size will definitely make it a big tricky to learn. Bigger knives are much easier. You can find a set of "screaming eagles" pretty cheap if you find you enjoy knife throwing after you get frustrated.
I'm not gonna try to explain a technique that's much better explained from a real source, but one thing that definitely helped me when I started was doing short (6-10" flippy throws, instead of adding-force-but-not-trying-to-send-the-thing-spinning-like-a-bat-out-of-hell throws like you'll pick up pretty easily =p), 1/2 flip throws, nice and close just to begin to learn how to feel for the correct flip.

Also, do not be tempted to spin the bloody thing on your finger. I almost slit my wrist open with kunai.. good luck!

Well, fortunately I'll only have to dance around him for a day, then again when he gets back.

I bought this as my athame. I know they're supposed to be dull and such, but I actually use it as my tool athame and my ritual athame and it works really, really well. Plus I'm tiny and it's "small" (that's what lots of people said, anyways) and it fits my hand perfectly.

I remember putting my altar together. I bought lots of stuff because I didn't have the patience to find it myself in nature and I could afford to, and I was really excited. Have fun with it! Also be sure to hit up craft stores! Lots of goodies to be found in those!

Buy cheap stainless steel throwing knives, I got 6 for $20. You don't want to buy expensive knives when your just starting out. And since your just starting out, a few will probably break, but since you payed so little for them, you wont be mad that you broke them. Try to get a package deal (like 2 or three of the same knife), because you want to be consistent. As for technique, use The Gil Hibben Knife Throwing Guide.
That is how I learned, and it has done me very well. I would not recommend throwing into wood, unless you use very small knives. I broke 2 440 knives by throwing at wood (they are pretty damn big, and I got 6 for $20). Try cardboard or if you have a big piece of styrofoam, that works excellent. Just remember to try to make it stick first, and try to lob it/ arch it. You don't need to throw it hard at all. Focus on just sticking it first, than accuracy, and than power. After your'e making it in about 70% of the time at a good distance, than go for accuracy. Increase Distance and repeat. Once you have the spin down, you can estimate at what distance you should use the blade, handle, and where your grip should be (to spin it faster or slower). Just start out close (watch out, these things bounce back), and after you stick it in, move two normal steps back (or about 4 feet), and switch from handle grip to blade grip, and just repeat that process. Read that book and it will go into way more detail, and you will be sticking it in no time. Look for knives like this or this. Just try to buy all of the same style, because it will be hard to get used to other styles. Also, if you have the money (and its legal), consider buying one of these just for fun. It will stick every time, and will not break because its carbon steel. After you're good and have the money, buy a couple of these or another cold steel throwing knife, they are some of the best you can buy.

I bought the three tomahawk brand knives on sale, about a dollar a piece not including shipping. Now everything people say about the quality is true. However at a dollar a knife, they were ideal for me as my first throwing knives.

Because they were so cheap, it wasn't the end of the world to bend or damage one due to my poor throwing as a beginner. They certainly 'worked' as far as throwing knives, but even as a beginner you feel like you wish you had a better quality knife in your hand.

Bottom Line: Can't beat the price for what you get, but as expected they aren't worth much unless you're learning and don't want to damage a good knife.

So I've been fidgeting with a trainer I bought (https://www.amazon.com/Anlado-Balisong-Butterfly-Trainer-Practice/dp/B06W5KSDY5) and now I decided to try and get a little more deliberate with my "training." I have no one to help in person so I appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

I can get it to work most of the time but pretty often when I do the flip out, both the handle and the blade end up on the same side, so rather than a T, I end up more with an L. If I wait to start rotating until after the handle has already hit the back of my fingers, it works consistently. Thus, my guess is that I'm starting the rotation too soon and I just need more practice to start the rotation at the right point.

Also, most of the time when I do start fanning the blade ends up straight out and only occasionally perpendicular to my hand. Any tips for keeping the T shape consistent while fanning? I'm assuming it's just another practice thing but figured I'd ask.

The cheap knives on amazon are usually Ok. These are fun, shiny... kinda bendy though, and not that heavy.

Before you get knives, normal silverware knives are fun to throw. They are nice and heavy, and not that sharp. IDK if it is safe though, the knife might snap.

that's these exact ones, at least as far as i can tell. some of the wrapping was coming off so i ran a lighter over it a little to soften and melt it then it stuck back together pretty well.

i got some boxes out of storage and had a bit of a play with them, a little odd at first but after 10 minutes or so i could get some repeatable throws that were working. pretty fun!

I got these a while ago and they re pretty sweet, once you get good with them you can do some sick party tricks.

Things like this are also fun. Throwing knifes or a self defense keychain are also very effective additions to my wand kit.

You do not need anything over 20 bucks for a trainer. If you feel like you really want something high quality, just buy your balisong and put a bit of duct tape on the edge. I recommend this. Make sure you have a few Torx screwdrivers on hand to tighten it every once in a while.

This trainer is still one I use when I can't take a balisong somewhere. It's insanely durable, just like a BBBarfly, but doesn't have insanely large handles and isn't louder than a semitruck. With a little sanding the handles are quite comfortable as well.

Generally for knife throwing, bigger is better, the smaller ones tend bounce back randomly. With a larger, well-balanced knife you'll have a much easier time to consistently stick it. The no-spin technique is the easiest to learn quickly, just start close and work your way back. I personally use the Expendables Kunai Set, I kid you not. Not out of love for the movie, but because they're big well balanced blades.

Thanks a lot for the info, I did a bit of research and it still seems that gil hibben set would be the best for me. I'd prefer to keep the set under 50$, it doesnt have any guards on it or anything, and all the reviews are great. Is there anything wrong with it?

EDIT: I also found these, are they any good? 12 inches, no guards, theres a bit of grip but that can't make much of a difference.

$8 for 3, I got about 30 for practicing(less trips to pick them up) they are good, sometimes the string comes loose but glue is an easy fix.

I bought a Cheap (£10) balisong trainer from amazon this one And after a few hours, the bite handle keeps going completely stiff, sometimes 5 minutes of wiggling it, it will go back to normal for a few minutes. I though this would last at least a few weeks without screwing up, not a few hours. Is there anything I could do? Maybe squirt some WD-40 in their? It has no screws though, so I doubt it could do any good. I don't wanna have to spend $100+ on something just so it lasts a long time, I've literally been flipping for a few hours max.

I have this Bad Axe from the late 90s, when I was in my Mall Ninja phase. I took it camping with me and threw it at trees for giggles. The handle broke, so I carved a new one out of pine, then that one broke (apparently pine doesn't handle sharp impacts well). Now I just have the steel part tucked away, waiting for a day I run across a better handle material.

It was decent for throwing, but my old Gil Hibben throwing hatchet is much better balanced and the full steel construction doesn't require handle replacement.
