Is this a mountain bike? I'm guessing so because you talk about trails.
Did the chain pop off the front? If so the solution is simple: --->N-gear jump stop plus making sure your chain is the proper length.
In the largest cog in the rear, and the largest cog in the front, the rear derailleur should angle forward to about 30 degrees under parallel ---> looks like this. If it's pointing downward more you can take a few links out. ---->Good article explaining
Also, learn to ride in larger cogs through rough stuff. The chain will be tighter and not bounce off as much as it will in the middle cogs.
A little late to this thread, but on my 29er I had the same sort of issue with the chain coming off. Total pain in the ass. I installed a chain guide courtesy of Amazon and it hasn't fallen off since when having to shift to those lower gears. Good luck!
Or a cheaper chain guide like this one..

Yeah it will change gears fine, just mount your front ring with good chainline.
A chain catcher like this: http://www.amazon.com/N-Gear-Jump-Chain-Guide-Watcher/dp/B001CJXEKG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414128685&sr=8-1&keywords=chain+watcher will add extra security cheaply.
