You can get a decent VR HMD for around 250-300 dollars right now used. VR isn't super expensive like it was 3 years ago.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT
And Amazon
You don't need an Index to play it. You can get the Samsung Odyssey+ for $250 right now. More deals will pop up over the next week/month as well as Black Friday and the holidays approach.
Also it's not like there's no other VR games out there.
EDIT: It's $229 on Amazon. I actually went and bought it myself. I'll upgrade to the Index controller and base station close to HL:Alyx launch so technically it's $229 for a decent headset.

Only $900+ in the UK with a whopping supply of one, what a steal!
It might be slightly petty but that does grate me about the "Oh there are cheap VR options" posts because.....there aren't for everyone. Hell, I'm in Africa and source from the UK so I'm behind 2 layers of fuckery, with even the first world one not getting a good deal. VR is expensive, the defense force out since Alyx was announced needs to accept that their reality is not universal by any means.
You mean like this $230 Samsung Odyssey+, which is compatible with SteamVR and HL: Alyx, and is available to buy right now?
PS Moves are the worst VR controllers in existence, they weren't designed to be VR controllers, they were supposed to compete with the Wii controllers I guess, and they're not accurate enough for VR.
I really hate how Sony decided to use that instead of doing a little bit of refinement to it's design to make it better.
I recommend you Windows Mixed Reality if you want good cheap VR. Samsung Odyssey+ is currently on sale for $299, its one of the best cheap VR headsets you can get your hands on
This comment is directed to anyone who's interested in such. VR is awesome. Whoever said VR is dead few years back is dead wrong.
$450 kangaroobucks actually.

And this is THE better quality stuff. Next stop - Valve Index.
Samsung odyssey plus in like new condition for around $230:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07HS7R1RT?condition=used
Yeah, I don't actually recommend it unless you have a lot of disposable income. Valve was going for "highest quality VR experience available" and not "affordable". If you want a good VR headset on a reasonable budget, you probably want a Rift S($399), a used Vive ($400), or an Odyssey Plus( $349).
Vive and Odyssey plus have a better refresh rate. Vive is the hardest to set up, but has the most robust hand tracking, followed by the Rift S, followed by the Odyssey plus, which have progressively narrower zones of hand tracking. The Odyssey plus does have the nicest screen in terms of resolution of all three, so that's a significant advantage.
Oh, and don't get the Rift S if you have unusually widely or narrowly set eyes. The lack of hardware IPD adjustment really sucks for the far ends of the bell curve there.
Same price on Amazon, better return policy than B&H just in case you don't like it.

Also available from Amazon and BHphoto for the same price
Good thing the Odyssey+ is $250 right now
FWIW: Amazon currently has the same price as this link now:

This might be enough to push me over the edge and buying it. 5% cash back with Prime Rewards Visa brings the price down to less than $220.

Same price with prime,
I just bought this. With nothing to compare to I love it.
Setup trouble shooting, none of this stuff takes longer than 5 minutes a piece to google(except maybe #2) but I just set it up yesterday:
Also available on B&H Photo Video for $279.00 or Used - Like New on Amazon for $216.75!
It's even cheaper on Amazon
You can buy a good headset for 229 right now, that's comparable to a monitor. https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT

Also very cheap at the moment - at least compared to the latest rift/vive offerings. It's not nearly as good at "proper" VR, but if you're just looking for a head-tracking, head-mounted display for sim racing, it's really the best deal going.
Looks like amazon has it as well.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=samsung+odyssey+%2B&qid=1563120125&s=gateway&sr=8-1
I bought it from american amazon and so far everything works great. Which is good considering no warranty where I'm at.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HS7R1RT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you but even one of those budget options is way too costly for me. My countries currency isn't worth much, so I could either get a cheap VR set or pay my rent for around 6 months..
I really wanted to buy this:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Samsung+Odyssey%2B&qid=1574368990&s=electronics&sr=1-1

Also available on amazon for the same price for that extra 5% cashback. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LVkWDbRQMW2N6
>https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=cm\_sw\_r\_cp\_api\_i\_LVkWDbRQMW2N6
On B&H you can use PayPal and Chase Freedom earns 5% Ultimate Rewards which is more valuable than 5% cashback.
Why don't the two of you go to a VR arcade and see for yourselves? You will have a family outing and you will have great time :)
A Samsung Odyssey + is now only USD 229
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=samsung+odyssey+plus&qid=1574457005&sprefix=samsung+od&sr=8-3
The Odyssey+ is currently on sale brand new for $299: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT
The only standalone HMD is Oculus Quest. Now if by standalone you mean it won't require external cameras that's a different matter.
The Odyssey Plus has great contrast with its AMOLED screens, and higher resolution then the HTC Vive. It's currently on sale for $299.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT
If you're looking for an alternative to the Rift S, I personally have and recommend the Samsung Odyssey+ WMR headset, as it's been on sale regularly (and for a while now) at 300 USD. It has a higher refresh rate than the Rift S (90Hz as opposed to 80Hz on the Rift S and 72Hz on the Quest), has a better panel and less SDE, as well as the famous Samsung AMOLED display panels, giving deeper blacks and more accurate colours. It also has hardware IPD adjustment, whereas the Rift S can only do software adjustment.
The only drawbacks that come to mind is that since the O+ has 2 cameras on the front to track the controllers (as opposed to four on the Quest and five on the Rift S), it tracks the controllers less accurately and tends to lose focus if the controllers are not in view of the cameras, as well as being tethered to your PC and being pushed further into the Windows ecosystem.

Great for these types of games and currently on sale. I'd get it now.
Lots of people mentioned the Rift S which is a good bang/buck, but also look into Samsung Odyssey+ which is often only $300 on sales (and currently on sale)
https://smile.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/
I can wholeheartedly recommend he go the Odyssey+ route. Especially at $300 new:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_1?crid=10XK0BNAUP3OU&keywords=odyssey+samsung+plus&qid=1566410157&s=gateway&sprefix=odyssey+sams%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-1
Put what is saved toward an enclosure and a new GPU then think about upgrading to Kunckles controllers down the line.
They frequently go on sale on amazon, Microsoft, and other stores, I’ll edit in a link I found if I find it that shows amazon prices of the headset
Better deal: the Odyssey+ is available NOW on Amazon for $229. Same price from NewEgg also

It is an option. Act quick now. It is 299$ + 100 USD for shipping and customs to UK.
My cousin bought one from Amazon just yesterday.
Buy from Amazom.com, not from Amazon.co.uk.
Here it is for you:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HS7R1RT?pf_rd_p=2d1ab404-3b11-4c97-b3db-48081e145e35&pf_rd_r=T18YVG56QXCB8X4TASMZ
For someone who's is just getting in to VR the Lenovo is a great headset.
Before I bought my Lenovo for about 300 USD (which is a steal in most of Europe) I used the PSVR and the Lenovo is so much better. Superior resolution, much lighter and thus easier to move around in, significantly improved colours and blacks.
I also have a large head. Im forced to fully unscrew the back screw that tightens the headband and it's still kinda tight if I don't let my hair down.
But if you don't mind adding another 90 USD you should go for the Samsung Odisey + which is in almost every way superior to the Lenovo.
The main advantage of the Odisey + over the Lenovo, besides the increased resolution and less pronounced SDE, is that you don't need a Bluetooth dongle connected to your PC for controller paring. The Samsung has Bluetooth recivers in the headset it self.
From what I've read on this sub and other places online the O + controller tracking works great out of the box while other WMR headsets, like the Lenovo, are much more finicky - and that not even mentioning that the latest SteamVR update that introduced diffirent controller mapping for WMR controllers introduced more problems like pronounced shaking and jittier in WMR controllers.
If I were you in your shoes I would get the Odisey + in a heart beat over the Lenovo.
Hope this helps.
Oh, okay. Well I'll keep the link up in case anybody wants to grab it anyway. I think its the same price on amazon too.
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=odyssey%2B&qid=1556327659&s=gateway&sr=8-2
So I wanted to buy this https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=18FXTWDI5IITU&keywords=windows+mixed+reality&qid=1573994064&sprefix=windows+mixed+%2Caps%2C418&sr=8-3 product, but couple of days ago the price was like 10 dollars more expensive and there were estimated import fees deposit to Poland. Now estimated fees are gone and the price is hidden. Does that mean I don't have to pay the fees? I live in Europe.
I bought mine for $300. You can find cheaper models, all of which are still higher resolution than the PSVR with higher refresh rate, starting at $120.
https://www.amazon.com/HP-Mixed-Reality-Headset-Controllers/dp/B075XZ5F1G/ref=pd_sbs_147_t_2/141-8308153-1525711?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B075XZ5F1G&pd_rd_r=3b2267e4-94f0-4408-a474-2c2f0f195b48&pd_rd_w=IwbeT&pd_rd_wg=iLmXn&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=NZ762NQDA5R9SXC8AASC&psc=1&refRID=NZ762NQDA5R9SXC8AASC
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-Wireless-Controllers-XE800ZBA-HC1US/dp/B07HS7R1RT
Not sure if you'll see any better than this deal then. this is a great price for this headset btw
That's right around the recommended specs for the Index. You can run any headset out there. The most affordable and adequate would be the HP WMR headset linked a couple comments up this thread but it looks like the best price is only if you get it in store and not every store carries them.
You could also try the Samsung Odyssey+. It has some advantages over the Rift S like better resolution and better built-in audio. But the Rift S has better tracking and massively reduced godray effects.
I wouldn't recommend a Vive or Vive pro. The pixel layout makes for a potentially blockier image than the other cheaper headsets. Some people don't like camera through the lens comparisons because they're not perfect examples but I feel like they give an vague idea of what to expect. Also, every advantage the Vive Pro has over the others is shared with the Index and then some.

This is the one I was linked to by Amazon Staff and I have a chat log of the dialogue. The customs alone was $200, which I think is the culprit in this matter. And even though they say I get refunded if the customs are less than they thought, it would take 60 days and I don't want to pay that much upfront.
I found a european website that sells it for €542 (around $620) but I understand I only have 30 days to return it. If it breaks after that (not due to myself), I won't have 2 years of warranty as we have in Denmark for all electronics by standard. So I don't dare. Otherwise a good price.
Anyone here that owns or tried a Samsung Odyssey + VR set care to share their opinion?
I'm really tempted to get one from Amazon right now for $290+$50(shipping)
