So, true story, I spent almost a decade in heritage digitization (ie. preserving, stabilizing, and then digitizing old documents).

As others have mentioned here, the most important thing you can do ASAP is to get a digital copy of the document. Unless you have an insane amount of fine detail on the page, even your smart phone camera should be fine (an iPhone, for example, should be able to capture the document at rough ~170 pixels per inch which isn't amazing, but good enough for a just-in-case), although if you have a DSLR with a decent lens, you'll probably get better results. I wouldn't get too caught up on perfect lighting either, but try to make sure it's well lit. If you are concerned about getting a really high quality representation of the document, I'd recommend taking 4-12 pictures of the document, focused on different areas, and then using a program like Hugin which is 100% free to combine the individual photos into one very high quality image. Hugin isn't extremely difficult, but it's not extremely easy either so if you go that route make sure to follow the tutorials, like this one.

Additionally, I'd highly recommend capturing both sides of the document, even if nothing appears to be on the other side.

For preserving until you can get to a professional, the thing to focus on is that acid is your enemy and humidity is very particular. The first thing I'd do is pick up something like this: https://www.amazon.com/BCW-Newspaper-Polypropylene-Sleeves-50-Sleeves/dp/B00IDCZ6DS/

Regardless of what you get, you're looking for the keywords "Acid-free" and "Archival" (ie. polyester, polypropylene, or polyethylene). Make sure to avoid anything made from PVC ( polyvinylchloride), which will damage the document.

On top of that, I'd then move the now sleeved document into something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gaylord-Archival%C2%AE-Newspaper-Preservation-Box/dp/B00ZDHEN1M/. Your goal with the box is to protect the document from any sunlight, etc.

Finally, for where to store them? No attics, garages, sheds, or basements! Or any environment with extreme temperature shifts, humidity changes, etc. Personally, I'd move the box to the top of an interior closet (ie. not against a house wall).

That being said, I professionally was asked all of the time what the best long-term way to store a document was and the answer I think most people expected was digitally and online. The truth is, paper documents outperform anything digital on longevity by orders of magnitude. Your document might look pretty beat up, but if you take some sensible steps to preserve it, it's got hundreds of years of life left in it.

Here's my full write-up, but TL;DR I used the file box instead of the accordion folder. It's bigger, but the handle is nice, and I can fit anything I want in it (except the overly large map).

-----------------------

FYI, I slightly modified the YASS Gloomhaven setup to make the storage a little more efficient/intuitive and keep all the standee bottoms in the combat bin.

I go into more detail here for anyone interested.

ORIGINAL POST:

I use a variation of the YASS Gloomhaven setup. You can add an accordion folder if you like to save even more setup/breakdown time. I made a few modifications to the layout to make it more intuitive and keep the standees in the combat box. Here's what my updated layout looks like, and here are the files I used. I also lay my planos flat instead of standing them up as it gives slightly more space at the top to fit the board, etc. FYI, I didn't add the counters label, just left that square blank, but everything else is good to go.

I used a Portable File Box to hold my map tiles, rule books, monster stat cards (although I use Gloomy Companion most of the time), city/road event decks, and unlocked items. There are comparable options on Amazon.

Album of full setup

-----------------------

MATERIALS LIST:

  1. 3x Plano 3600 boxes. Size 11" x 7.25" x 1.75".
  2. 1x Plano 3601 box. Size 11" X 7.25" X 1.13".
  3. Paper/Card Stock (for printing plano labels)
  4. Zip-lock bags

Note: the plano 3600 on amazon is a 4 pack. You can find them at Dick's Sporting Goods occaisonally for less $$$: 3600,
    3601

    Optional:
Tape (I didn't use any, but others said they needed it to keep the label on the plano lid)
The Portable File Box I had laying around
Amazon File Box with stronger latch
Hanging File Folders I had laying around

    -----------------------

    CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL Y.A.S.S.
    Units 1 Box:
    No changes needed.

    Units 2 Box:
I moved the Inox Bodyguards to the Boss slot which I shrunk 1 square by moving one large boss to the terrain box. I moved all of the standee bases to the small plano. I used the extra space to move all of the attack modifier decks in here. I store the number tokens and (useless) curse/bless tokens in the 2 remaining slots I opened up.

    *Small Plano (modifiers/tokens):*
In the small plano I freed up the whole bottom row by moving the number tokens (which largely go unused) to the terrain box, removing the curse/bless tokens (since they aren't used in the game), and moving the element/HP/EXP markers up one space. I shrunk the single damage markers to a single cell (they fit just fine) to make room. The bottom row now houses the standee bases.

    Terrain Box:*
I used the small dividers from the 3601 to separate out the traps, water, totem, treasure sections (this makes them easy to pull out). I shrunk the Doors by a square and added a square for traps using the short dividers to keep all 4 traps separate. Chopping out the divider to make room for the 3-hex objects was a lot more work than I expected, but it was worth it. I added in the 2 bosses to the bottom of that section since they don't fit anywhere else (and will likely only be used once each).

I'm glad I read this.. I have been bicycle touring on/off for a couple of years, and I carried a laptop briefly in 2016. When I packed the laptop I decided it had to be in a plastic hard case. At the time it was a big decision whether to add a case or to press it into a pannier bag along with all the other stuff I carry and risk the loss. Your post shows that I probably made a wise choice to use a case.

I chose to carry it in a Pelican 1085. This was a case which gave ample room for an Acer Aspire S13, as well as all the other electronic loads I wanted to carry... kobo e-ink reader, fluke 101 multimeter, beaglebone black, bluetooth keyboard, power supply & cords, usb power monitor, etc.

The Pelican 1085 is a massive case in the range of briefcase size & weight. It weighs 3 lbs by itself. It was very difficult to fit it into an Ortlieb Classic rear pannier. I swore up and down "never again" and after riding just 700 miles with my mobile hobo media studio, I gave away the case and pawned off the laptop for a song.

Now I'm setting up my next trip and once again am neck deep into Thinkpads and tablets and cases and hopefully I can give you a couple leads.

There are not many notable hard cases for laptops. Pelican offers a couple of interesting cases.

Pelican 1085: 363x263x50mm. At around 3 lbs, and the size of a small briefcase, this was the case I lugged around on a bicycle tour until I swore never again. It's a good case for someone who travels with a large machine as long as you don't need dunk-worthy waterproof sealing. Without additional latches around the rim, there's just no way this unit is water tight. It kept my Acer pristine while being lugged around on a bicycle and that's a very positive result. If packed properly with foam, you could use this as a seat with a laptop inside.

Pelican 1070cc: 325x227x18mm. Nearly the same footprint as a 1085, but only 2.3 lbs. It's about an inch thinner than the 1085. This would be an excellent case for a Thinkpad X1. You're pushing 5 lbs total weight, and again, I think the external volume would make it tough to carry in a bag. Too thin for Thickpad.

Pelican 1075: 282x201x41mm. Notable mention, although the only modern devices that would fit in it are like a Yoga 11 Skylake, Huawei Matebook tablet, or Macbook 12. The Macbook 12 fits in this hard case according to photos on an Amazon review.

306x209x20.3 (12.05x8.23x.800")... This is the Thinkpad x250's dimensions.

Portable A4 file Box Transparent plastic box. The 310x230x40mm advertised dimensions don't make it clear if internal or external dimensions. US Letter paper size is 279.4 x 215.9. Judging by the photos, it looks like they've put either construction paper or some folders inside and it doesn't seem to lay flat. I'm guessing it would be too small for your x250.

Flambeau Conductive 12x8. 301.6x303.2x20.8... Blow molded case listed without weight. I would imagine it is in the 2-3 lb range of weight. This is an interesting box because of the conductive plastic used, but it's otherwise of low cost construction. The hinge is just flexing plastic that will fatigue, for example.

Plasticase 642 Kitcase. 333x298x70mm. Huge. Only 1.01 lbs. Voluminous. Articulated hinge. If only the x250 fit in the smaller and lighter 645.

I have looked for carbon fiber sleeves and plastic cases and fiberglass cases and sleeves and the above is pretty much what I have found. Besides the above listed items, I would recommend digging through https://www.casesbysource.com/brand/cases-by-source

Personally I'm interested in the A4 / US Letter size document cases. They are just the right shape and cheap & lightweight. Finding the right one for your laptop might be difficult but you could always order a few and return all but the best one.

First OP, it is perfectly normal to feel like this. Here is what I would recommend:

School. Do it now, but have plan. Find a field of study that interest you and use the Post 9/11 GI Bill. Don’t go to a for profit school! Find a local state school or community college to start.

Stay Active. You can find all sorts of groups out there to engage with. Yeah it will feel weird at first, but dive in and give it try. If you don’t like, don’t do it. No one can make you.

VA. Get to work on that now. Start the claims process now and keep copies of every freaking piece of paper you get or give them. Get one of these and some folders. Keep track! Got a copy of your medical records? Good, make 2 more copies. Now keep 1 of those and a copy of your DD214 is a safe place (fire proof case or safe deposit box for example).

That should get you started. Oh and remember this, there will be dark times. It happens, but you’re strong and can get past it. It just might take some help. So give the Vet Center a call. They can help adjusting back. http://www.vetcenter.va.gov/

u/kragzazet · 1 pointr/Rabbits

As an undergrad student, this is all-too familiar XD Long post incoming, I’m proud of my findings :P

Whenever I move into a new dorm room, I move all the rabbit supplies in before releasing the bunzilla. The room is totally different, but mr bunny still recognizes the smell of his old things (throw rugs, toys, litterbox, (my) his sweater) and the first thing he tends to do is jump in the litterbox. That’s when things go smoothly.

Other times, he’s thrown a fit and tried to tear up the rugs, toys, anything and everything. Having his chewable and tearable things nearby helps give him an outlet for his temper tantrum. When this happens I stay during his whole fit until he falls asleep. After that, if the room is rabbit-friendly, then he settles down just fine.

Car travel is great because you can make the perfect bun crate. I don’t use my normal crate, but instead I fashion a larger space out of a plastic storage bin (sorta like this? ), one that has large air holes all along the sides. On the floor, I put a layer of litter, then a small towel “nest” that will keep the bun scooped up (so he can lie securely in place without getting jostled about the larger container) On the side he’ll be facing, I put a handful of Timothy hay. With this setup, you can leave hay within reach without stuffing it in his face or making him pee on the same hay he’s eating. If your bun happens to drink out of a bottle, this is the one time when bottles can be superior to bowls. I wouldn’t put a water bowl in the crate, but I stop frequently to offer him water. Just make sure he doesn’t eat a lot of the plastic off the walls and that the lid is secure. I use this kind of crate when I’m on the road for more than an hour.

u/DATBEARD · 5 pointsr/comicbooks

That's awesome you want to get into comics for him. Good on you. For protection you should get bags and boards. Basically the bags are well, bags, and the boards and a cardboard like backer you put behind the comic inside the bag.
You can pick them up online (they usually go for around the Amazon price on any site) or your local comic shop should have them. You'll want to put the comics inside what's called a longbox. My local comic shop sells them for $5 a piece.

As far as Deadpool, I'd highly suggest reading the Deadpool Classic trades. You'll learn his origin and it has literally classic stories. They're hilarious. Here's the first volume. I believe there's six in total. Then there's the current series which I'm sure he's reading. If you like those pick up other Deadpool trades. I'm pretty sure you'll like him, he's not your average super "hero".

For "essential comic basics" check out the FAQ. Has everything you need to know including reading suggestions on all types of books. Find something you might be interested in and/or what he's into and get reading.

u/Bath_Time_Kraken · 3 pointsr/Pathfinder_ACG

The “base” box is pretty easy to find, my local comic store has them sometimes but you can also find it here 3200 Count Box

For the small dividers within each row we cannibalized an older box of similar type, though most any other cardboard /box could work. (We had several of these 500 ct Box)

While sleeving is costly, it protects the investment (plus some of us have young kids that like the pictures :p) and also has a nice side effect of having a TON of empty sleeve boxes that make perfect “holders” for stuff.

Have fun making your box!

Cheers.

u/Austounded · 2 pointsr/DCcomics

Damn nice haul.

On the note of the single issues I would recommend getting a short box (they fit pretty well in closets for storage too) to store single issues and by the looks of it a single box will last you a long time. They hold about 100 comics give or take depending the bags and boards you use. The boxes are pretty cheap too, you can get them on Amazon or a LCS for about $8.

Give me a few minutes and I can edit in some links for you about storing them and what not.

Edit: So here are some helpful links to understanding how to store your single issues

  • Types of bags and boards
  • Where to keep your boxes

I'm a big fan of BCW, they make really high quality boxes and what not. These are all the things I use in my collection.

  • Short boxs (I couldn't find just one, but I bet a LCS has them for sale in singles)
  • Dividers
  • Mylite Bags
  • Boards to match

Here are some shots of my collection:

  • I use a mail organizer to store my single issues by series. I keep them here until I bag and board them. You'll see some are already bagged - those are my crappy bags that I don't actually use in my boxes I just had them around. The pile on the top left there is a discard pile; I end up donating them once it gets too big.
  • Here are my boxes. 2 of the boxes are just the Flash haha but it is also in alphabetical order nonetheless.
  • Here's a peek inside (These comics haven't been moved into those nicer boards I linked yet)

Bonus screen shot of my excel spreadsheet I use to organize all this stuff.

    Hope this helped a little!

Those types of containers are good for day to day use, but if you get in the habit of buying at least a brick or case of a set it's good to have something like this: Sterilite Medium Clip Box

These will reliably fit an entire set, save for the ones with the multiple oversize figures like the most recent Thor.

u/iheartbungalow · 3 pointsr/Teachers

I think having them pick up everything at the start of class is a great idea! However, you may be better off having file folders for each student instead of a whole drawer, those things are expensive!. I would use 4 different crates like this or you know, prettier, and split their folders up alphabetically, giving each their name and number. This way they can pick up their folder at the start of class, and drop it off at the end, with any work they need to turn in! The number makes it easier for them to alphabetize quickly and correctly.

Ugh, I'm not good at describing things this morning. The way I see it it would like like this:

Box 1, last names a-f - if you are in first period and your last name is aaron then you would be number 1, 2nd period and your last name is abel, you would be right after Mr. Fzier from 1st period. So on and so forth....

Does that make sense?

Travel tip for you: buy a Really Useful Box from Amazon / Staples / Office Depot and pack it into your luggage for Disney trips. They’re great for packing snacks or anything you don’t want to smash on your way down. Then once empty, use them for valuables on the return trip as they can normally hold a coffee mug or Pop pretty safely. I’ve been flying with mine for years with no problems whatsoever.

u/11twenty2 · 6 pointsr/sewing

If your stash of sewing patterns is out of control like mine was, Comic book sleeves like these are the perfect size for most pattern packages and most that you find are re-sealable. They also make boxes and dividers that will fit patterns perfectly. Best part about it is that they are way cheaper than buying ones specifically for sewing patterns. I know it isn't a sewing tip, but it is a sewing organization tip. Hopefully it helps someone.

u/mule_roany_mare · 2 pointsr/AskNYC

I am not advocating this because it's ugly.

But I bought a bunch of bankers boxes

https://smile.amazon.com/Bankers-Box-SmoothMove-Tape-Free-7716401/dp/B00KP37XYS?keywords=bankers+box&qid=1538014960&sr=8-8&ref=sr_1_8

and a rack

And it changed my life. Organize boxes by type. Now I know where to put things when I put them away, and I can find everything I own.

This was meant to be temporary, but I love having a super dense uniform storage area. Gonna build a wall of nice wood bins soon.

I work in tech theatre as a lighting designer/stage manager/sound technician. When I am doing lighting or sage managing I often have to bring my own supplies. One of the essential supplies are gels. Gels are little sheets of a plastic like material used to change the color of the light. You have to have a LOT of them and all different colors. A great way to store them is in hanging file folders in a Hanging File Folder Box. When carrying around 20+ different colors of gel you need a way to organize them and find them easily and quickly. If not, you are going through a pile of paper thin plastic sheets that often stick together with static trying to find that specific one. When you are at a light hang and only have a few hours to do a days worth of work, those few minutes searching you save really helps. With the same color of gel each in their own labeled folder it takes seconds to find what you need as opposed to 5 minutes of cursing and pulling your hair out. Thanx so much!

u/Tangurena · 5 pointsr/actuallesbians

Get a note book and a file drawer for records. Any repairs or improvements, save the receipts. I also save utility bills and check them about every 6 months. You never know when Comcast decides to add some new fee. Or if your water bill goes way up and you don't do things differently than last year, that can be a sign of a leaking pipe.

In the storage thing I save all the instruction books and warranty papers for new appliances.

Something like:
http://www.amazon.com/IRIS-Letter-Size-Portable-Wing/dp/B00CY53K88/
http://www.amazon.com/Storex-Portable-Storage-Drawer-61523U01C/dp/B002JGJ47S/

In the notebook, I usually keep names and numbers of repair people. So if my neighbor asks, I can tell them. Or if they had something done that I want done maybe next year, I can write it down.

Also, the notebook is where I write down instructions for things that only get done once per year, like draining the sprinkler system.

it couldn't hurt... but unless you plan on being on your phone all day, i'm sure your phone will hold out.

as far as back pack essentials... here's what i put in my backpack. snacks, water, deodorant (it gets quite pungent on the floor), even though panels are listed in the book as well as a map, it's nice to have a notepad with a list of panels you want to go to.. i bring pens, sharpies, colored markers/highlighters... i also bring an adjustable poster tube, so if i buy posters or prints i know they're safe (and you will see these for sale around con for bank)... i also carry a file folder so i have something sturdy to put comics in.

I've moved a decent sized (600+) record collection three times and I use these: http://www.amazon.com/Diskeeper-Ultimate-Record-Storage-Box/dp/B00B2ATGKM I know they're expensive but they're nearly indestructible. I swear, you can put almost anything on top of these things. They're great for just general storage too. I don't know how many records you're moving, but these are definitely worth the investment. And when you're done you can just break them down and put them in your closet until you need them again.

u/Pandemixx · 3 pointsr/DungeonsAndDragons

They only existed recently. There exists spell cards now that are the same spells from the players handbook with all the relevant information on a card. Makes referencing your spells really easy.

Here are the folders I was talking about as well. They're nice because wet erase pens work on them which make them great for tracking health without having a bunch of erase marks on your character sheets.

u/tomorrowdog · 2 pointsr/iastate

I love my Nspire but nobody is going to show you how to use it, you have to be proactive. I got mine the summer before and watched Youtube tutorials.

For the room here are a couple recommendations:

u/spookystitches · 1 pointr/declutter

I’d say clear totes with basic labels like kitchen 1, kitchen 2, bedroom, etc. Open each of your existing boxes and sort any keep items into the clear totes. All the stuff leaving can go back into the cardboard boxes that should be empty.

Also for making lists, These at stickers saved my life when storing things for a move. I’d suggest them! The app made it easy and any time we needed to find “that one thing” I could search the app.

Seriously Google Calendar with Text Message Alerts and tasks can be such a useful tool. As for papers I put old tests in a small file cabinet box that is similiar to this one except mine looks cooler. I have a binder with one class that doesn't work well. I switched to just filling up 3 subject notebooks. Also for my econ class that has hand outs I also use a folder.
