Hi! You can look into rubber chair mats, which most people use in offices. They tend to be small sized and they are pricy. Extra large yoga mats work, but they tend to be very long, yet narrow.
Two things I have used are: Home Depot sells an indoor/outdoor carpet. It’s industrial type, low pile, very durable. And it’s easy to vacuum. The size is perfect for me, 6’x8’ AND they are really inexpensive (less than $20). Here’s a link https://www.homedepot.com/p/Foss-Hobnail-Granite-6-ft-x-8-ft-Indoor-Outdoor-Area-Rug-CN19N32PJ1H1/202042701?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CG%7CVF%7CD23%7C23-2_CARPETING%7CNA%7CPLA%7C71700000033393850%7C58700004413536484%7C92700037075139627&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhuSArYHe3gIV07XACh06xATUEAQYASABEgIPxfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
The other success I have had is with exercise tile mats for kids. Each tile is one square foot and you can customize to your bunny’s play space. https://www.amazon.com/feetsbook-Exercise-Interlocking-Waterproof-Non-Slip/dp/B079M6T3G8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542546803&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=baby+floor+mat+tiles&psc=1
Both of these options are easy to clean and durable enough for the bunny to hop around on. Good luck!!🍀
You are doing a great job!
I would make sure your litter truly is "99.9% dust free" - so watch carefully when you pour it to see how much dust it produces. Also, scoop it every day (or twice a day) to reduce the ammonia, which could irritate his airways.
You could talk to a vet about bronchodilator therapy. It's not used by itself, and most cats do not need it, but it can be used symptomatically based on clinical signs (wheezing, noisy breathing, etc).
Air purifiers are probably only helpful if they are effective for the size of the room where he spends most of its time. Ideally you would have one for each room he spends time in, so that you can be sure it is actually circulating there.
You could try covering the carpet in the room he spends most of the time in? I use these for my foster kitten room. These ones have a bit of a chemical odor to them, so if you go this route make sure to let them air out (preferably outside) for a little while. You can get more fashionable ones like this, too. Alternatively, lots of low pile rugs might help - they are much easier to vacuum thoroughly.
Overall, asthma is not curable. Medication helps, but clinical signs may still be present. In humans that develop asthma as kids, spontaneous resolution is common - but we do not know if this is true for cats with asthma.
We got something like this:

Or you can combine a few of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Surround-6-Panel-PlaySafe/dp/B000G1YW98/ref=sr_1_4_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1502910571&sr=8-4&keywords=baby+pen
We put it over a foam mat and our son was happy. Eventually set him to free range once he really got moving.
Good luck.

The foam mat now is being used for the slide we opted to keep inside for the occasional heart attack er. i mean fun...
Since you asked about rat proofing, in addition to the Tespo playpen (put together with zipties so it folds flat), I would recommend putting down something like this foam puzzle playmat, and then a blanket on top of that. The mat is actually very easy to put together and take apart, liquid doesn't really get through to the other side, and it's easy to clean. Your rats will probably chew on some of the corners, but they seem to stick to a favorite chewing spot, so I usually just let them obsess on that spot until it looks pretty chewed up, then swap out the mat piece.
If you do let them free roam through the whole place, don't leave them unattended for more than a few minutes. You may find that they've gotten bored and started working on a project (like mine, which were stripping the drywall behind the couch).
I used these in my buns expen and are now in his temporary cage. They are a great price and nice and soft. They are also nice for sitting with him, much nicer than flat on the ground.

Yard sale season is coming up, so scour your area for those. We scored a free toy storage shelves like this and this lego/train table with storage underneath - both for free on the curb in our neighborhood. I also got alphabet foam mats like this one for $10 on craigslist.
As far as stuff we paid for that I'd recommend:
I'm not sure if you're looking for toy suggestions, too, or just room design elements...
I have a foam alphabet puzzle that is nice and modular for my needs and a big table....A lot of my friends use their spare beds. I actually got my puzzle cheaper than that at Walmart.
I'm a pinner, but I hear great things about wires...and these too!
Congratulations on 1st child! That project is stunning. The 2 together also give you an excuse :) to get a very special blocking set (you can use the back for pinning until little one needs them): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074C691Q2/ref=twister_B07T4DSH91?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have used foam blocks like these when camping to line the entire tent floor:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015T8S7WA/
They made it more comfortable for everyone, especially the kids who rolled around a lot. Also, the toddler aged ones had a harder time with staying in their own sleeping bag, so it was often a combo of them in a non-mummy bag with me or unzipping a sleeping bag and using as a quilt. They also wore winter-style jammies during summer camping (fleece with footies, for example).
You might want to use small carabiners on the tent zippers if you are a heavier sleeper...that way it deters any wandering if they wake up early.
You'd also be amazed at all the fun stuff for a toddler within 20 feet of your campsite - digging for worms, finding bugs under rocks, smelling flowers, collecting different leaves, having sword fights with sticks, peeing on trees, etc.
Ok so this one didn’t happen at night, but is a good one to tell other parents and get a great old laugh... DD was 2, DS was just under 1. We’ve been working on potty training for a while now, so DD was running around in underpants. She starts to poop, DH cleans her up and leaves the living room to try and rinse out the underpants. After a few minutes I go back into the living room, notice the smell « wow that wAs a bad one! », DD is starting to freak out because the cuff of her pants was over her foot (the horror!). I kneel down to fix her pants, glance at DS just in time to see him drag his hand out of a pile of poop about the size of a side plate. I yell out « OOOOOMG », DH runs back in and looks at me, at the poop, then back at me with just... confusion. He’s like « I changed her! Where the hell did all this poop come from?!! » To this day we still aren’t sure what happened, best I can guess is that she pooped so much that most of it fell out of her underwear, and DH must have changed her literally inches away from that steaming pile and didn’t notice. Worst part was that it all happened on top of these exact foam mats , they were a BLAST to clean.
Probably something like this so you feel for sure when you are out of the safe space. Maybe the virtual boundaries are easier to ignore than this.
I'm going through this as well with my 5 month old twins. The other day, I picked up my daughter when I got home from work to say hello and give her a hug. My son watched this happen, puzzled for a second, then stuck his bottom lip out and started absolutely wailing. They got jealous of attention so much faster than I ever anticipated.
Basically, we don't have a solution, but we just try to spend time with each parent getting some one on one time with each twin as much as we can. I think unfortunately multiples just tend to develop a thicker skin about not getting attention because the reality is, we can't give each of them our undivided attention 24/7.
One thing we have done is buy some of those interlocking soft floor tiles (like these) and we keep a big section assembled in the living room so that we can do tummy time with each one at the same time (activity gyms are too small for both at the same time now) and try to have "together" time where we read a book, both look at and grab for the same toy, etc while they are in a Twin Z. I'm naively hoping this starts to teach them that having play time where they're getting divided attention from mom or dad and there's this other twin there too can still be enjoyable.
You know those square puzzle piece kids play mats? That (or similar) is what I bought. It's a loooot cheaper than a fancy blocking kit, and it works just as well. It helps to use a measuring tape as you're block, though, because the squares aren't gridded like in the fancy kits. Couple these with some quilting T pins (or whatever sewing pins you may have laying around) and you'll be good to go.
In the meantime, you can also lay down towels on the floor. I know plenty of people who even use their bed! I think the $20 purchase of the square mats was extra worth it, though - they make it really easy to position and pin your work.
There are other handy blocking tools, like blocking wires, which help to make really smooth edges on your FOs, but those can come later.
Those puzzle squares for kids rooms work well, too. I like them because you can rearrange them to fit whatever your project is.

Which is 6'x 6' square. And a ton of t pins.
I just finished and blocked my first large thing. I used old boxes, like amzon box, the wet wipes box ect. And laid towles on it. I poked my pins through the towles in to the boxes. Worked great.
