I totally agree that board shorts or the long swim trunks are uncomfortable. It's too much fabric.
What about a compromise and get something more like this. They're shorts, so they have more coverage than briefs (potentially less "embarrassing" for daughter) but a lot smaller and less fabric than board shorts so you'll be more comfortable.
I am sure there is. If there is, I am not sure why you would not just call them swimming shorts. I know there are some swimwear that look like underwear.
