I was looking into this myself, so let me give you a little breakdown.

Suppose the following:

  • The cover improves your average MPG by 1 MPG.
  • Your unimproved MPG baseline is 17.5 MPG.
  • The cover costs about $230
  • You drive the US national average of about 13,500 miles per year.
  • The average cost of gas is $2.50 per gallon.

So in a given year you would spend $1,929 without the cover and with the cover, $1,824 per year, a difference of $105 over the year. With these numbers, it would probably take you at least 2 years in this very generous scenario for the cover to pay for itself.

If you don't drive very many highway miles, you're likely to observe no significant change in fuel economy, because the benefit from drag reduction is most relevant at high speeds.

If you're trying to be a penny pincher in the fuel economy department, you're better off...

  • Changing your driving habits to reduce hard stops and accelerations
  • Changing your routes to reduce the number of intersections, turns, idling, etc.
  • Changing your air filter every 10,000 miles
  • Drafting behind a tractor trailer (dangerous)

If you're like me, you use your Taco for truck things: off-road, towing, hauling, adventuring, etc. My other vehicle and daily-driver is 2006 Honda Accord with a super-reliable K-series engine, and I've gotten that up 35 mpg highway on certain trips.

Here's some other articles/info on the matter:

  • The Tonneau Cover Fuel Economy Myth
  • DOES A TONNEAU COVER REALLY IMPROVE GAS MILEAGE ON A TRUCK?

As others have said, the other half to your cost-benefit analysis of the cover might be that it keeps your bed cargo dry and protected, and that may be worth paying for, too.

Without knowing the brand of your tonneau cover it's pretty tricky to figure out - your photo was too low of resolution to see the friends of what you currently have in there. Anyway I did spot this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/Bak-Industries-92303-Tonneau-Cover/dp/B0075L15BK/ref=mp_s_a_1_2

This company offers a toolbox that fits underneath its tonneau cover, so perhaps that's a place to start?

It looks like there's a few stand-alone options that you can integrate with different makes and models of covers, mostly available through custom order from the usual Auto parts stores and Home Depot, but everything described basically said it's better that you show up at the store with your truck to make sure it'll fit.

Happy Trails dude!

So I got this for my taco. It was super easy to install - took me all of maybe 30 minutes? - and I like the way it looks on my truck. The cover itself doesn’t lock but as long as the tailgate locks you are good to go, can’t remove the cover without either cutting it or dropping the gate down. It folds up nicely to carry big stuff, completely removes in a matter of minutes. Worth the money for me.

I have a Tyger brand (described as "Maxmate", but tagged "Tyger" on the cover itself) cover that I ordered on Amazon. It's pretty alright, but is starting to look worn after 4 months. It is mostly leak-proof, but still lets in a little moisture and dust. For a road trip, I bet it would be perfectly fine. Took about 10 minutes to install by myself. No drilling required at all.

If you're on a budget, hell even if you're not, you should check out these Tyger covers. They are amazing and still look like new and seal like new after 4.5 years. Definitely the best purchase and value I have ever made for my truck.

Nerf Bars

Bed cover

Both were really easy to instal and I'm really happy with how they look.

I got the bed cover on last night and we got an inch and a half of driving rain. The bed was totally dry except for one minuscule puddle in the corner of the bed nearest the cab on the drivers side and I think that's just because I didn't have it in perfectly square.

u/nbarile · 2 pointsr/Trucks

Sorry to heat that. I don't have any experience with the BakFlip but when I was looking for a cover for my new truck, I went with the Truxedo Hard roll up. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012ZYFD7I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This thing has been great. It's really strong and I don't think you would be able to puncture it through all those slats.

u/terrymc42 · 3 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

I have a Tyger foldable soft cover I got from Amazon for around $200 and it’s great. Would definitely recommend it.

If anybody is interested.

MaxMate Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover for 2015-2019 Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon | Fleetside 5'2" Bed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019NUGDJO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_umwNDbAZ93KK4

It's specifically the selection for the 2019 Chevy Colorado. $160. Fits really well.

Not bad for a cheap(er) option, figured I'd share with you folks!

u/madtv126 · 2 pointsr/NissanTitan

I think it would be fine. I bought for that same reason.

What is nice about the roll-up is that it does not block the window when rolled.

I ordered through tonneaucovered.com their prices were much better.

u/chrmcc · 1 pointr/NissanTitan

Thanks. I don’t expect anything to be 100% waterproof but would like to be able to have suitcases back there on a trip without worrying about them.

Looking at this one as well: BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover | 448525 | Fits 17-20 NISSAN Titan 5' 6" Bed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JR75HP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gPIUDbQ97G8MH

u/notlikejohnny · 2 pointsr/nissanfrontier

Yea I think those are old reviews, I saw them too. Idk if they changed or updated their products, but if you make sure it fits specifically for our trucks it works. I think it says in the title “for Nissan Frontier”

Edit:
This is the exact one I have. Price went up I guess or I got it on sale?

If you read under special features is says hardware for utilitrack included.

u/GIANTsnail · 1 pointr/fordranger

My current cover was from Amazon and is similar to:

Premium Roll & Lock Tonneau Truck Bed Cover For 82-13 Ford Ranger (NOT Splash/Flareside) & 94-11 Mazda Pickup 6' Short Bed https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LYYKTUB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_ETUKzbXYX2HPX

Hope that helps!

I have a 16' canoe and a '14 FX4 with the 5.5' bed with the Extang Trifecta folding cover (that sits on top of the bed rails).

I installed the Back Rack with the c-clamps that allow it to sit above the cover, and I use the hitch-mounted Extend-a-Rack in the low, farther extended position so the canoe sits on an angle above the roof and just barely clears the closed tail gate.

TONNEAU ADAPT - 50112 https://www.amazon.com/Backrack-50112-Tonneau-Cover-Adapter/dp/B01GWD2OVG

It's too dark for pics now... and the Extend a Rack is still buried in the shed... sorry.

I'm not sure if you can fit all three boats on this setup... but if you look at some of the hitch-mounted ladder racks, you might find something that is wide enough to fit all 3.

I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018YFTTMW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Easy to install, easy to roll up/unroll, and the low profile looks great. Only problem is that the price went up. I got it for $415. The one I linked to is for a long box.

u/ReallyWantATaco · 2 pointsr/NissanTitan

I got this one for my '17 and haven't had any problems. The material is more like a jeep top so it doesn't look as bad when weathered.

u/bear_knuckle · 2 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

Truxedo rollup cover, love it, I like that you can use the whole bed whereas the tri-folds restrict you. Had it on since September and it's held up through a tough new England winter remarkably well

https://www.amazon.com/TruXedo-TruXport-Roll-up-Tonneau-257001/dp/B018YFTT36/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=tacoma+TruXedo+TruXport+Soft+Roll-up+Truck+Bed+Tonneau+Cover+%7C+257001+%7C+fits+16-19+Toyota+Tacoma+6%27+Bed&qid=1558905989&s=gateway&sr=8-4

u/brian5258 · 1 pointr/nissanfrontier

I went with the Truxedo Trucksport since it attaches above the utilitrack rather than on it, which has the benefit of still allowing full use of the track. $278 right now. Install is totally DIY’able but follow the instructions closely. It’s water tight and easy to roll up/unroll.

u/CRCs_Reality · 2 pointsr/ToyotaTacoma

I bought this one for my '07 TRD Sport DCSB, and am quite happy with it.

They make a LongBed version also, BTW.

I’ve had this for two years and it’s held up great

I have a single cab, storage container behind the seats. You can get a good bit in there. I have my straps, jump starter, and an air compressor in there among other things.

There's also the boxes that fold out, installed aft of the wheel wells.

I ordered this tonneau cover today. Should be here on Monday. Even though it says it's for a Chevy Colorado, it fits very nicely on the Gladiator.

I opted against the Ram Box. There are times that I would like it (for example, when I was tailgating at Jimmy Buffett a couple weeks ago - or today when I was supposed to tailgate at a Brewers Game) - but beyond that, I wouldn't use it much. I definately wouldn't use it enough to be worth $1500. I may someday get the Undercover Swing cases though.

I have had the Tyger Tonneau for about a year now, with absolutely no complaints. For the money, I would highly recommend it.
