I have the C920, it works OK for the head tracking. 1080p at 30FPS there is notable lag even on my fairly powerful machine. I've had it for years.

I have the Apeman TRAWO (It cost me £75). It is a 4K @30fps WiFi Action Camera.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/apeman-Waterproof-Stabilization-Batteries-Accessories/dp/B07DN4JF4B/

In webcam mode via USB it has a very good quality 1280x720p picture at 60FPS, in camera mode it can do 120FPS at 720p. 60FPS @1080p and 30FPS @2.7K. It has HDMI out and so a cheap capture card at 1080p 60fps would work but you would have the OSD symbols visible. On my 4K screen in webcam mode the Apeman 720p looks better, less blocky, less noise, better colour saturation than the C920 1080p at full screen. Also the C920 tends to react to changing brightness levels in jumps in auto-exposure mode, whereas the Apeman TRAWO has smoother brightness level transitions.

I have tested the lag time of the TRAWO in USB webcam mode and it is about 1-2/10ths of the C920 when it's in 1080p mode. Because it is an action camera it can be set to virtually whatever light level you need via exposure values. It has 3 settings for wide angle. On the narrowest it works very well for Star Citizen - I have no idea if the Logitech Brio is much better because I wouldn't pay that price for a webcam. I know the Apeman works perfectly well for me. Like all action cameras it comes with a tonne of mounts and it is not limited to PC use.

I'm not recommending any particular camera.. the player/user must decide what is their budget and preference. Be aware that not all action cameras have a webcam function. I recently bought the DBPOWER EX7000 4K action camera in the hope of recommending it for use in the game (I wanted 2 of them anyway).. and for the price (£26) it is a fantastic 4K Action Camera with inbuilt image stabilisation.. but it has no webcam function - but it does have live monitor HDMI out. Their online support is truly amazing, they sent me a free gift of a bluetooth soundbar all the way from China to the UK just because I logged onto their support chat and asked where can I buy spare batteries.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DBPOWER-Underwater-External-Microphone-Batteries/dp/B07S3DYJP7/

If you were planning on buying an action camera anyway it is worth noting that some of them do work with the game and there is a lot more variety and wider price range of action cameras compared to webcams. It could work out cheaper even if you use a HDMI to USB capture dongle. (£26 Action Cam plus 1080p 60Hz capture dongle is still circa $75.)

You can even get fairly cheap used 1080p capable SLR / mirrorless micro 4 thirds cameras half the price of a new C920 HD Pro with much better image quality that work as USB webcams and because they don't have fixed focal length the way webcams do you can put the camera across the room and zoom in to your face with a relatively cheap lens. Again they are not limited to single use like USB webcams. They are the most popular Youtuber talking head type camera. Even the really old ones that you can get for around $40 - $50 have good quality 1080p via HDMI.

Thanks /u/lamic

I looked through your post and recommendations, it looks awesome! I know I really should wait for the Hero5 but I'm not sure if I can wait.

I started to put a list of things I want/need into a spreadsheet, to start looking at Price. I have Amazon Prime so I'm thinking about ordering everything through Amazon.

Can you take a quick look through my list and see if everything checks out and if I missed anything for "Basic" operations? Then could you make any more recommendations, or let me know what my next purchases should be?

  • GoPro HERO4 SILVER- $338

  • Memory Card Lexar 64GB- $35, Looks like the cheapest one between Sandisk Extreme and Lexar, Lexar currently is the cheapest on Amazon

  • Batteries - Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack)- $22, Read a few reviews and people said they like these batteries a lot. Should give me enough juice and let me know how long I can record with, until I'm completely dead.

  • Protection Lens - $7 I really just need to lens protector, in the reviews people are saying some parts don’t fit the Hero4 only the Hero3. Or should I put the $20 version off the actual GoPro site?

  • GoPro The Tool$4, Like you requested and reading some comments it looks like it would be worth it.

  • A basic Card Reader - $7, did a quick google search on best card readers this one popped up for best for it’s price.

  • SANDMARC® Pole - $40, Looked up some reviews and people tend to like this one. It seems like is always recommended to have some kind of stick or holdable mount to start off with. Also could you go into a little more detail about mounting the GoPro?

  • Pelican Case -$25 I like the idea of it being waterproof and I like to be organized with my stuff. So this looks like a perfect fit. And it will be an awesome case to travel with.

  • Kingston 5-in-1 Mobile Companion - $35 I was watching some videos and it seems like this could be a cool little gadget to have. I would mostly use it for “mobile uploads to Hard Drives”. Working in IT I know how important it is to have backups, and this will let me get around bringing a laptop to the resort and other stuff. This is the video I’m referring too that shows you how to upload to a HD with out a computer.

So with everything in my cart I’m sitting at $488 which is with in my budget.

I’m still reading about the remote. That might be something we add down the line. I think I’ll be pretty content with just my phone app or getting the “waterproof touch screen” case cover too.

Do you think this is a good setup? Will this get me going? Do you have any recommendations, or anything that I should add or not buy yet?
u/AUfan82 · 2 pointsr/bicycling

This is what I use currently.

http://www.amazon.com/SVC200-Waterproof-Surveillance-FHD1920X1080-Accessories/dp/B00BTWAO0O/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1405374411&sr=1-1

$160 bucks. I would say its about the quality of a Go Pro White. More than enough for a good quality action camera, and commuter camera. Bitrate is what gets everyone with these things, and the higher the better.

This also comes with a waterproof case, a removable generic battery, several mounts, (including car suction mount and bike bar mount). It also does looped recording. Battery last about and hour and 45 minutes, and 1080p on a 16gb microsd card gives you about that long to record.

Ill post a video of the quality in a minute.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8SpJRDtwhM&feature=youtu.be

Make sure to click on 1080p in the settings.

  • Edit

So here is the youtube video of a few clips on a commute through downtown boston. Very sunny day, and I would say that it makes the video a bit worse, not better. I have noticed that a slightly cloudy day gives the best contrast for seeing license plates in the video. Also the next to last clip has some audio in it to give you an idea of the audio capture on the camera. The camera does have an audio in jack, so if you ride in a car for long trips, ride a motorcycle, or have a full faced helmet (for the wind) you could do some video commuter vlogs with an external mic.

Youtube compression will most likely mess this up a bit, so I will let you know that you can see and read license plates at 20ft from the bike pretty easy in the original video. After that it gets kinda iffy, sometimes 25, sometimes 30ft......but never less than a full truck length and some.

This video is pretty shaky, and I look around alot, but I figured to give you a few clips of realistic footage as opposed to me trying to catch the sailboats when crossing over the charles. I have another clip showing how good the camera is at just catching good scenery listed below.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1rKv_DmyTs

Last little opinion here. I think that CycleGaz has the best setup you can get, 1 bar, 1 helmet, 1 rear. I think that when I settle down and get a bit of extra cash......I'll grav a GP Hero3 Black plus SE Racing edition.....or whatever is out. I'll retire this camera to rear facing under the seat and be very happy.

This serves as a GREAT commuter camera, and Also does underwater and hiking shots great. ( I do have video of sand dollars under water but my wife is scantly clad)

    **Double edit

This camera is basically the same as the sony as15 he has listed below. I think the hardware is the same, but the case is different, which is why his is waterproof stock, and mine requires a case. Having said that, my case is super water prooof.....lol.
u/geezfools · 2 pointsr/gopro

I picked up the sandmarc pole a month ago and love it. i can't compare it to others, but it's much better than the stick I was using that I picked up in hawaii a year ago, haha. Makes it easy to shoot away from me/the pole and then flip it to shoot selfies. I had it fully extended, out my trucks window going 70mph over the weekend, no issues. The twist locks seem nice as well. No complaints at all. Here is a referral link to save 10% if you buy it from them. It's also on amazon with free shipping if you have prime.
Not sure if the link will work, but here it is out the window: https://38.media.tumblr.com/82fc1d14de6205e6b6a18763fe2a2861/tumblr_n9tgt8HFk51qeigmjo2_1280.jpg

edit: I have no expierence with the GoPole, so I can't say one is better then another, I just liked the price of the sandmarc, went with it and I'm happy with it. The wrist strap seems to be holding in there and the mount at the end looks just like a GoPro original. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Thanks.

Yes, I'm using a GoPro Hero 7 Black on a FeiyuTech Feiyu WG2X gimbal. I mount the gimbal on my helmet.

The GoPro itself already has really good stabilization and when you combine that with the gimbal, you can get really good results.

There's a guy on YouTube named Terry Barentsen that I'm subscribed to. He does cycling videos in a similar style, and he kind of inspired me to start making my own videos. You should check him out, he's got a lot of great content. Here's one of my favorites of his: Link

u/provideocreator · 2 pointsr/videography

It'll really depend on how slow you need to go. A lot of cameras do 1080p 60fps, and that can be slowed down a little on a 24fps timeline, but we can do a little better than that.

For a full sized camera, you'll be looking at a Sony A6300 with a lens for $898.00. The A6300 can shoot 1080p video at up to 120 frames per second, so you can slow that down to 1/5th the speed. That camera's also good for general video and still images. The advantage there is Sony cameras are good in low light, and you'll need that when you have the faster frame rate.

If you want a portable solution, you can get a Go Pro Hero 7 Black for $390.62 that does 1080p240.

Prefer a camcorder over a DSLR or GoPro? Then you'll need to go with a Panasonic HC-VX870K for $647.99. That's also a 4K camera, but it does have a 1080p 120 fps mode, with in camera interpolation up to 240 fps (not sure how well that works though).

Thanks!

I was thinking of mounts while walking through my local hardware store, and I thought of this. Tried it on some 1 1/4" pipe and it works great. Have yet to try it on a roll bar, but I will in a week or so.

It's a knockoff GoPro from Amazon. Uses all the same mounts, and looks damn near identical to it. Cost me only $100, and it has a built in LCD, which works great. Battery life isn't the best, but the footage is pretty nice in daylight.

Sunco Dream 2. Amazon Link

I have another mount I made to "clamp" on to the edge of surfaces that I made of a 1" C clamp, a 1/4" bolt and some hose clamps. I could take some pictures of it if you or anyone else is interested.

u/cooldude87 · 1 pointr/Cameras

For 4 or 5 hours of battery life, you will definitely have to use an external usb battery pack and usb charge cable plugging into the camera the whole time. You’ll have to get a big micro sd card as well to capture all that footage even if it is at 720p.

A knock off gopro like the akaso brave 4 camera might be a good option because it is water proof. But you will have to buy a case that lets you plug in that external usb power supply, which will be default make it not water proof after all.

AKASO Brave 4 4K 20MP WiFi Action Camera Ultra HD with EIS 30m Underwater Waterproof Camera Remote Control 5X Zoom Underwater Camcorder with 2 Batteries and Helmet Accessories Kit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076DD5JNS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_TkC6Bb9CA3MHZ

With knock off gopro accessories and mounts you could probably get a back pack mount or something too so it could just be on your shoulder as you commute.

u/Palegreenstarz · 1 pointr/gopro

I just bought the sandmarc pole last week for my new go pro:
http://www.amazon.com/SANDMARC-Pole-Edition-Telescoping-Extension/dp/B00I1QVWX4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415850237&sr=8-1&keywords=sandmarc+black

So far I really like it. I wanted something small enough to fit in a backpack to take snowboarding or traveling. It fits the bill perfect. Customer service was excellent as well. I took it apart to wash after it was in some salt water, lost one of the plastic tabs that provides friction. I emailed asking if i could pay for a replacement. They said they were going to mail them to me for free.

u/InvisibleJiuJitsu · 1 pointr/videography

you'll probably get a ton of recommendations for the panasonic G7 with a reasonably wide lens to fit you all in shot, it's a really excellent little 4k camera for the price.

or if you need to save money for audio/lights etc, you could settle for a gopro hero6 or gopro hero 7. amazon referral links included

Let us know more about your budget for lights and audio, or if you have those bases covered already

u/bmcnightrider · 1 pointr/cycling

I currently own the Apeman A70 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Underwater-Waterproof-170%C2%B0Ultra-Wide-Angle-Accessories/dp/B01ERJ4A0K)

I currently have it attached to the top of my helmet (not actually the helmet i own - http://scene7.zumiez.com/is/image/zumiez/pdp_hero/Pro-Tec-Classic-Skate-Helmet-_238309-front.jpg) using the sticky base (the bike attachment was too small to put around my handlebars)

Comes with two batteries which is great! So far i have managed to use just battery on my commute to work (about 40 minutes there and 40 minutes back - also works quite well on the lit roads even at 8pm!) and some battery life still remains. The picture quality is really good as is the sound quality.

The wifi is quite handy however it does take a while to transfer from camera to phone, so would recommend transfer via computer.

u/ExhaustiveCleaning · 1 pointr/gopro

Looking to buy a gopro hero 7 black.

Is it better to just buy the camera at $350 and then buy the individual accessories I need with the current $350 price? It looks like all the bundles are priced based on the $399 pricing, which means none of them are a good deal as long as the base unit is selling for 350.

Any after market accessory brands that are reputable? Looking for a small tripod and a rail mount and would like to avoid overspending if I can.

u/thatdiveguy · 1 pointr/scuba

check out the Intova Sport Pro

http://www.amazon.com/Intova-Sport-Video-Camera-Clear/dp/B007R7PTZA

I have that, red filter and a base tray and it works great, and it's pretty cheap all things considered. Great quality pictures and video too.

u/FlopperARC · 2 pointsr/airsoft

To be honest, I would just go with spending a tiny bit more money and picking up one of these far more attachment options, (such as gun mount), and it's waterproof out of the box with no case needed. Not trying to say what OP has is bad, but Contour is a super reliable company and they have amazing products imo.

u/MoogleMan3 · 4 pointsr/gopro

Nice deal. I'm getting one of these as soon as my tax refund comes in. Hopefully the sale is still around.

Edit: Same price on amazon, and B&H Photo. Also ABT; they have the best deal for me. Free extra battery and head mount, no tax.

u/pentium4borg · 5 pointsr/Seattle

I have a ContourROAM. It's water-resistant (plenty good for rain) and idiotproof (single switch on/off). Records in full 1080p. There's a newer version, the ContourROAM 2, which is slightly more expensive. I'm happy with my camera though.

Camera, Helmet mount, and you'll want a microSD card (I recommend 32GiB)

Contour recently announced they're going out of business, but another company has bought all the assets and is planning to resurrect them. Other people like GoPro too, and I've seen people with those cameras. Couldn't hurt to check them out.

u/CityForAnts · 3 pointsr/gopro

This is my favorite pole by far! I own it and love it. I wrote a review on this sub if you're interested too.

u/CaptainSirDoctor · 3 pointsr/MotoUK

What an arse. I tend to find lorries are more likely to scoot over and let me filter through, I figure it's better for them to know I'm past them.

I use the ConourROAM2 which is pretty good, got a 32gb memory card to go with it. I got it for £100 which seems to be bargain because the cheapest I can find now is about £170.

u/Wallcrawler62 · 3 pointsr/photography

I have an earlier model Contour ROAM. I think it was about $140 and came with a waterproof case and some other mounts. It works pretty well and I like the shape better than the GoPro.

http://www.amazon.com/Contour-ROAM2-Waterproof-Video-Camera/dp/B009CN8X3C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=8-1&keywords=contour+roam

u/psicicle · 1 pointr/Fitness

I got the camera linked below on amazon a year ago for about $40. It doesn't seem to be stocked now, but if you can find it for a similar price range I thought it was pretty good. Most of the video on my channel here is taken with it.

Hey all,
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Hero 7 Black.
Bestbuy is $399 + $90 for 3 years of coverage.
Amazon is $369 (don't ask me why or how) and $34 for 3 years of coverage

I understand the coverage is different (one is geek squad and one is asurion)

any recommendations of where to spend my money would be great, thanks!

u/Kusheire · 1 pointr/techsupport

I honestly don't even know what value village is. That device has been out of support for a decade, and was last supported on an OS that isn't supported anymore either...

So yeah, I'm saying it is your fault. As for how to do research, Google "affordable Webcam windows 7". I clicked the first amazon link, this was one of the suggestions with comments saying it works on Windows up to 10.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OB88HI4/ref=s9_top_hm_awbw_bisR_g147_i21?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=mobile-hybrid-11&pf_rd_r=P48GDP8HR73GX0Z9YSN1&pf_rd_t=30901&pf_rd_p=9c8ffa40-ad1d-544c-b1cd-2a534733f401&pf_rd_i=172511

They shouldn't make drivers for a device they declared obsolete. You should've looked it up, they did their due diligence by saying they no longer support it 10 years ago and you didn't check. You don't have to like it, or be happy about it, but you shouldn't try to smear their name because you bought something without checking the specs first.

If you don't understand that, that's fine... I won't argue with you. I'd try to sympathize with the $20 thing, but you're kind of am entitled asshole, so honestly I don't feel bad.

u/CloneWerks · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

I'm an IT support tech and although many folks love it, I've found that model to be notoriously fussy.

Since you are running Octoprint I'm assuming it's plugged directly into a "pi" and not some sort of hub? In the Windows world it HATES USB hubs and isn't too fond of cheap USB 3.0 controllers in general.

Seriously, while I do understand the value of using something that you already have on hand, personally I'd use a different camera rather than wrestle with that model. I have two Octopi and both are using stupidly cheap ($10) webcams that I got from Amazon* and I've had zero configuration issues with them.

*Link provided as a reference, I am not endorsing Amazon or that particular company

Go Pro smart remote is worth it. I have the 3 way pivot arm from go-pro and my only complaint is that I cannot mount the remote on the pole like some third party poles

/u/cyclegaz more than likely has a few ideas about cameras. I haven't had much use out of mine, but I've got an SJ1000 for a rear camera mounted on my rack with a custom bracket. On my helmet I've got a Contour Roam 2 which is pretty slick. One thing to note with the SJ1000 too is that it has continuous recording overwriting so you don't have to worry about too much data being recorded.

I'm checking out this one: http://www.amazon.com/ProFloaty-Permanent-Floaty-Backdoor-Accessory/dp/B00BJ8J0PI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1375990166&sr=8-4&keywords=gopro+float

Still, I'm having anxiety about using my go pro while surfing and trying to decide if it's really worth it. I'm definitely not the type to be like, 'hey everyone look what i did!' at least not so obviously.

A $90 knock-off GoPro called Akaso:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076DD5JNS/

It worked great. Took it down to 140 feet and worked just fine.

u/nvaus · 0 pointsr/videography

The only thing better than a GoPro or something like this is going to be an actual full size camcorder or DSLR/M4/3 in a waterproof housing.

u/DesolationRobot · 1 pointr/motorcycles

Oh, I get what you're saying. Yeah, a waterproof enclosure would probably mute wind noise quite a bit.

In that case, though the Countour is still a better buy.

Knockoff GoPro so you can get footy for the boys:

(With $30 leftover for a memory card!)

No, you don't understand.

I have been gifted one of those little action cam GoPro clones, This one specifically is this one.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B079DLMTG2/

And it recommends this software.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aidewin.x1.view

Since that software is an absolute piece of garbage I was wondering if there was another better software, they all use the same base white labelled programs and then each one customizes it for their branding.

I am sorry I didn't word it very well the first time.

So, For an extension pole I was looking at the Sandmark
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I1QVWX4/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1VFH6EEG1FD6N

Would you say the Dolica is better?

u/ErichUberSonic · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

There were two different versions for $100. This one is the one I got. It looks like you ordered this one. It had been priced at $100 when I first started looking at them.

u/scoobersteve91 · 2 pointsr/gopro

The amount of times I have seen this product mentioned must mean it is decent. When I get my GoPro I will be for sure trying it out.

I've been using these batteries in my Yi Discovery. They are for Apeman action camera's, but size and pinouts match the Discovery.

I have the same micro SD card in my Discovery. Works good, but I shoot in 4k.

The mobile amazon page?

Here's the normal site

u/BillEastwickPhotos · 12 pointsr/AskPhotography

Or just go for the Hero 7 Black for the extra $30 over budget. Totally worth it for the stabilization alone.

u/floydiandroid · 1 pointr/motorcycles

I have a Contour Roam 2 and it is suitable for what you want: AMAZON. It's not the latest model, but it's only $100.

u/BrickOfJustice · 1 pointr/airsoft

Here is the model I got; it went on sale for $65.

u/IconsAreDead · 2 pointsr/SCREENPRINTING

I’m using this action camera with the camera mounted on a headband and its wireless so i dont have to use my hands!

u/mirathi · 4 pointsr/AmIFreeToGo

For a while I used an older Android phone as a dashcam and just recently bought the Gear Pro. Below are some alternatives:

u/planification · 1 pointr/bikecommuting

I'm probably going to go with the Contour Roam 2. Just gotta wait until next paycheck.

u/BloodyBrownHole · 1 pointr/gopro

I suggest the flow mow, or something similar for panning time lapse shots

u/RobotsAndLasers · 2 pointsr/motorcycles

It's a GoPro Black 7.

Cost Breakdown:

GoPro Black 7: $349

256 GB SD Card: $45

Mount Kit off Amazon: $22

u/DPMx9 · 2 pointsr/Scams

If they were real, why would they be sold so cheaply?

Of course nobody will sell you a $399 electronic device for $100.

Amazon has it at $325:

https://www.amazon.com/GoPro-HERO7-Black-Waterproof-Streaming-Stabilization/dp/B07GDGZCCH/

Whatever you are getting for $100 is NOT a GoPro Hero 7 Black.

EDIT: My thanks to /u/128Gigabytes for correcting me - I misread the OP's post.

They MAY be real at $299... but there is no way to tell from all the way over here.

u/Rdshadow · 1 pointr/photomarket

$377+$50+$30+$8+$27+7% = $526 - $350 = $176. Lazy or not, your better off retruning that stuff.
