So I just got home from a cross-country trip with my 14 month old (12 months adjusted, she was a preemie). It wasn't 11 hours but it was a total of 8 hours on a plane plus a couple hour layover. So far this year we've done three long trips to other states so we've been able to experiment some. I don't know what your budget is, but this is what worked for me:

  1. $129.99 - Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet, 8" HD Display, 32 GB, Kid-Proof Case. This was our absolute SAVIOR. It was a gift from my mom for her birthday and it has a two-year no questions asked warranty. Most of the apps are geared towards toddlers but there's a couple good free ones for 1-year-olds that are simple ("Balloon Pop!" and "Sago Mini Sound Box" are favorites of hers). The tablet comes with some kid's shows that you can download to it to watch without wifi when you're on the plane. Does your daughter have any videos or shows that she's obsessed with? Ours LOVES Cocomelon videos on YouTube - it takes a couple extra steps to get these working, but it was super worth it. If she does, try to find extended versions - like Cocomelon has compilation videos ("Hello Song & More") that go for about 30-40 min each. The short version is I used this YouTube downloader and transferred the files over after updating the firmware and restarting per this forum post. If you go this route, I would highly recommend getting the TouchLock app (below).
  2. Free - Touch Lock app - 100% recommend this if you want her to watch any videos on the flight, phone or tablet. Mine loves to touch all over the screen while she's watching which means she's always accidentally pausing her video. This makes it to where you have to tap 4 times in a certain spot (or type a PIN, etc) to make the screen interactable again. If you do end up getting the Fire tablet, I followed these directions exactly to get it working on mine - you just have to play the videos from the parent's profile.
  3. Free / $1.99 for no ads & extra content - Sensory Baby Toddler Learning app - Cute basic app for Android/iPhone where you pick some fish and some backgrounds and wherever the baby touches the screen it makes bubbles/stars/whatever, the fish swim towards their finger and it vibrates for some haptic feedback. Our daughter is enthralled by it, I ended up paying for it because it just had really good functionality for a free app.
  4. $11.99 Volume Limiting Soft Kids Headphones - If you go the video or game route you're absolutely going to want some headphones for her to be able to listen. If she tolerates stuff on her head (hats, hoodies), she'll be fine with these. Ours doesn't, so I just kind of drape them over/behind her in the car seat and it's fine.
  5. Post-it Notes! I read about this when I was searching for toy ideas and it was somewhat of a winner. I had an old book that had different post-its in it and she loved pulling them out and feeling the glue part on the back. It was also apparently hilarious when I stuck them to my forehead and they fell off into her lap.
  6. $3.99 for two - Baby Buddy Secure-A-Toy Straps - If yours likes to throw toys at all grab a few of these to attach them to baby/car seat/etc. Look for some cheap toys that you can specifically attach that make SOME noise but not much. You can hit up consignment sales and stores (Once Upon a Child) to find a lot of discounted toys, and Goodwill is great for kid's books.
  7. $11.99 - Ribbon Tag Ball with Rattle or $11.67 - Ribbon Tag Ball with Bells - We got one from a consignment sale for like $1 that looks like the first but has bells like the second. Used a toy strap to attach it to the car seat handle and it kept her entertained on the first flight until she fell asleep.
  8. $9.99 - Shaker Trio - Something that was recommended to me as a birthday gift and she loves them. They make enough sound to keep her entertained but they're not loud enough to bother anyone else really. We had a few other shaker-type toys that we were rotating too - some like this $2.99 rattle you can also attach with a toy strap.
  9. $7.99 Sassy Wonder Wheel Activity Center - You can stick this to the tray table (might need a wet cloth to get it to really stick) for some pretty easy entertainment. It has like no resistance on the wheel so she can get pretty crazy spinning it.
  10. Touch and Feel books - Check reviews to see which ones are actually good but I have a ton of these, two small ones came with us on the plane. Goodwill tends to have these in stock in decent condition, unlike their lift-the-flap books.

Also if you didn't already buy her a seat, ask the gate agents at check-in if there's room to take her car seat on the flight (assuming you're traveling with one). So far on our nine flights (counting layovers), our "lap infant" has had a seat on all but I think two. It's SO much easier putting her in an infant car seat and pulling the hood down a bit if you have one, makes it way easier for them to sleep. Stock up on bottles or pacifiers for take-off and landing, but if she doesn't take a pacifier try not to overfeed her so that she's refusing the bottle. With any luck she'll hopefully have a couple decent naps on the flight but it's still hard. Good luck and you can do this!

To answer the first question, here's what the switches are for. Sorry if it wasn't clear from the album.

TL;DR #1: The switches are for people with disabilities to interact with toys, iOS devices etc. They normally cost a lot of money but I made 4 switches for less than half the price of one commercial ability switch.

Single-switch devices are important for individuals with a wide range of disabilities. They are used for a wide range of accessibility things.

At one extreme end of the spectrum, Stephen Hawking used to use a simple single switch control for this computer when he was able to move his hand. It was actually depicted in a pivotal scene in the Theory of Everything. He describes it in this video. Now I believe he uses eye-gaze tracking.

A switch like this can be plugged into an interface box which can be used to control an iOS or Android device. Or for severely disabled people they can be used to simply answer yes or no audibly.

At the other end of the spectrum is my cousin's daughter. She's less than 2 years old and she has visual impairment as well as other medical issues which involve motor control.

For her, switches like these help her play with toys that she doesn't have the fine motor control to play with.

For example, you can put one toy on her left side connected to one switch, and another on her right side connected to another switch. One toy might be like the light shown in the gif from the album, which speaks when activated, and shines light (she can detect differences in light). On the right you might put a toy like this which makes sound and vibrates. Then you position one switch near her left hand and one switch near her right hand. As she hits the switches she's rewarded with the toys reacting to her (edit: and each toy's reaction is very different), and she learns cause and effect.

Also, importantly, she learns to use the switches which will probably be a part of her life permanently, unfortunately.

TL;DR #2: To answer the other question asked about the toys, yes you need special toys.

As part of this project I converted two toys to be accessible. I didn't take pictures along the way, so I can't post a DIY about them, but I can do better than that.

The stuffed dog in this gif a LeapFrog MyPal Violet, which talks, lights up, and sings songs, depending on which paw you squeeze. I used this amazing hour-long tutorial video to adapt the toy for these type of switches.

Essentially, I spliced into the wiring for the paws and created a breakout box that lets you plug in a switch to each paw if you want. Think of this as a "level 2" to the use described above since the differences between what the switch does is more subtle.

The lantern was even easier. There's a big switch at the top, which has two wires running back to the main control board at the bottom. I cut and soldered a splice into both wires, and ran them to a mono jack from radio shack. Then I drilled a hole in the back of the lantern and mounted the jack back there, et voila, you can plug in an external switch. The whole process took me about 20 minutes because I was already set up from having done the Violet toy.

Another way you can make toys accessible is by using a battery interrupter, which works with simpler toys, or other devices like a fan, radio etc. You switch the connected device on, and then the ability switch controls the on/off. The problem with these is they can't interact with complex toys like the MyPal, and they are very fragile and tend to break.

My 4 & 5 year old boys love their Leapster Explorer but they are pretty pricey- unless you think they could share one. Another great gift would be the Woody and Buzz Lightyear toys that talk. They are a favorite with my boys and it is nice that they are similar but very different and they can play together with them easily.

My 2yo girl loves any doll or stuffed animal. If ou are going stuffed animal- you can't beat anything JellyCat She also likes her Fisher Price Tea set.

Books, books, books! My babies love(d) Look, Look! (three year old loves "reading" it to his brother), Black & White, Art Cards, the Babyfaces series (esp Hugs and Kisses and Smile!. The World Snacks series is also great; they're bright, (mostly) well-written, and not irritating. Plus, My toddler still loves them, and we started reading them to him when he was three months. I like Yum Yum Dim Sum and Let's Nosh! best. Indestructables are great for babies who eat books. And the Leslie Patricelli books have been a huge hit around here since toddlerdude was a wee baby.

Don't forget non-board books good for reading, such as a Mother Goose (there are also "chunky" ones that are kid-safe), Beatrix Potter, The Wind in the Willows, or even Shel Silverstein.

Toys for this age that I like are sensory balls, music makers, rattles (we had to buy two of those because wee babydude likes it so much), stackers, links, these bead things (a large, four-sided activity cube is gold for this age through toddler hood--like this), stacking cups, and baby's first blocks. We have veriations on all of these (or the exact one listed), and they are popular with both our three year old and the eight month old.

u/oOoOa · 2 pointsr/Gifts

Sorry but I have no idea what's the best thing to gift to a 1 yr old. Toys comes into mind but there are so many of them that recommending any 1 would not be possible. Anyway I did some Google search, read a few articles, checked out the reviews and selected these 5

I know this thread is mostly about what music to play for your child but I thought I'd add that you can still get the fisher price kid friendly phonographs on amazon or ebay that are pretty indestructible...

I LOVED mine as a kid and not only were the songs familiar to me because my parents sung them or I heard them in pre-school, I was in control of the gadget and could play any song I wanted to. Think about something like this (I'm sure someone makes updated hipper versions) when your child gets agile enough. It helps with dexterity and let's them control their little worlds with fun. I really want this: Vtech Bizzy the Robot). I think my daughter would have loved it and it looks like a better version of the Fisher Price Beatbo. She loves loves loves dancing.

This [arch] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00VJKT0QU/) was a hit. I got it for $20 used.

u/ThePolemicist · 0 pointsr/AdviceAnimals

I guess your family is a little different. I drew my sister's name for our grab bag. We do it through an app that lets people list ideas for gifts. I put that my interests are baking and reading. She put, "Here's a link to the boots I want in size 7." I mean, she's a teacher and lives with her boyfriend who has a great job. I know she could buy her own pair of boots. So, basically, the gift exchange seems stupid. I don't get to think about what she'd like or anything.

It's much more fun to pick out a gift for a kid because they aren't as jaded. They don't say, "Just give me a gift card." I got my nephew (who is a toddler) a dinosaur that shoots out plastic balls. It's basically like playing fetch with your kid. link

u/AstarteHilzarie · 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

Your kid is literally my kid except he doesn't go to daycare. We just loop around the different rooms and stations all day. He has a stand and play music station that he totally loves, it stays in his playyard which is a decent amount of space for him to crawl and cruise around in with a billion toys and teethers to choose from, but most of the time he just stands at the piano thing and smacks the buttons. That is by far the thing that keeps him happy the longest.

You may also be interested in www.pathways.org it has all kinds of information about development and has tons od activity ideas based on age. Take it with a grain of salt, though... I was so gung ho about getting down on the floor with him and getting involved with his stacking toys.... he was more interested in climbing my shoulders, digging into the carpet, or chasing the dog's tail. They do have good information and ideas but... baby gonna baby.

u/El-Kurto · 3 pointsr/Parenting

Totally agree. We got this fisher price toy piano (Amazon link, not an affiliate link) and it has been the best music toy I have ever seen for kids. All of the notes are in tune and there are settings where the keys make normal piano sounds and where they trigger a recorded voice (on pitch!) that sings in solfedge. I wish it had more than one octave and that it played any notes outside of the C Major scale, but it's still very good. We also keep a cheap normal electric keyboard plugged in nearby so we can play together sometimes, and the kids sometimes play on it too.

Ours has survived 3 kids and my almost 5-year old (the oldest) still uses it. She plays music along with me and can pick out tunes from nursery rhymes on the keyboard or vocally using fixed-Do solfedge. I've only needed to change the batteries twice. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I would also advise you to stay away from instruments that can't be tuned (unless they are already on pitch and cannot lose it) or instruments that won't hold pitch long unless you plan to retune frequently. Examples of instruments that frequently have these problems include: recorders, harmonicas, whistles, ukuleles, and xylophones (that doesn't mean these are automatically bad, just that these instruments have a high percentage of poorly performing products for kids). Cheap pianos toys also frequently have a number of problems.

Cheap and toy instruments vary dramatically. If you know a lot about music, check before you buy. If you don't, avoid them or enlist a trusted advisor.

Our pediatrician's take was that walkers with wheels are dangerous because baby could get into trouble-- falling down stairs, getting into things they shouldn't, that sort of thing.

Technically, exersaucers aren't recommended either, but our ped's advice was that "as long as you're smart about it" and only use it for limited periods of time with full supervision, it can be good exercise. Don't leave baby in it for more than fifteen minutes at a time, but it can be a fine distraction while you're putting away groceries or whatever.

How about an activity table? Those are great for kids who are just starting to move around. You can leave them with the legs off to play with during tummy time, prop them on two legs to play while sitting up, and then they can stand and play when it's fully assembled.

I LOVE Christmas! My son is 17 months old and we haven't had whole lot of money this past year, so he doesn't have a whole lot of toys. He always points this thing out at the store, so he will be getting that. He also always points out ABC talking elmo so he's getting that too. He loves Daniel Tiger so he's getting a Daniel Tiger trolley and a goodnight Daniel stuffed animal.

He's also getting a few peg puzzles, about 7 books because he loves to look at books, a couple of bath toys, a few toy cars, and this rocking giraffe. He's getting a few other things too but I'm too lazy to list it all. I hope he has a good Christmas! And I hope your little one does too!

u/jvchilds · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Any toy that's sorting, stacking, and able to carry and move from place to place (a basket and Easter eggs at the moment). Leapfrog makes a tea set that she loves (but you'll be singing the songs for days). Sidewalk chalk and the box it came in. 360 sippy cup. Sturdy Velcro shoes. Extra utensils and cute bibs to take to restaurants.

Haha I have ideas but they’re not entirely for newborns:

music activity table

Ikea play tunnel

Matching tent

bouncing horse

Pillow Pets

Here’s some just awful toys my daughter has gotten:

Evil duck

Demonic Sesame Street toy

thanks I hate it talking bear

Pretty much any V Tech toy to be honest.

I’d have a harder time naming toys my daughter actually enjoys to be honest. :|

Once our daughter was big enough we got her an activity table that went around a seat, it converts to a high chair/booster that grows with kiddo which saved us buying a high chair.

Activity center: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LTI0ARO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vt5MDbQPJ4TAX

Once she was a bit bigger we used her bouncer and kept her in our line of sight.

Bouncer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016XS2O7O/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Mu5MDbGS0KDD7

Now that she’s walking we use baby gates and a play yard fence to keep her in a solidly baby proofed area and she still loves her bouncer at 17 months old

Play yard fence: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006NTY1HU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_vv5MDb89CNM0C

Edit: we also had a larger swing in the living room and a smaller portable swing I’d move around when I’d need to go to a different room to clean or something.

This has been my daughter's favorite toy since she started sitting up at 5 months. She's now almost 10 months and plays with it every day. It's fun to watch her because now she's starting to figure it out instead of just bang on it. Provides hours -- okay minutes -- of entertainment!

We have this Little Tikes Pop Tunes Guitar. DO NOT FUCKING GET IT. I'm warning you.

If you've got a real guitar, I'd say go for it with something more realistic, because he's actively watching you use yours correctly, so he'll want to "do it like daddy."

It doesn't have to be pro-quality. Just Amazon up "kid guitar" and buy a cheapie, since he probably WILL break it. But he might just enjoy it, and it'll make him feel like a big boy instead of getting some plastic kid's thing that goes in the corner when he gets bored. It'll be the transition from guitars being toys to him and guitars being honest to god instruments.

I think.

Depends on your child's development I guess, but at 6 months my daughter was trying to pull herself up, and her favorite toy from then on until she was 18 months was an activity table that had lots of little doors and noise makers attached. She could pull herself up and play with the toys on the table while practicing her walking and balance.

Edit: this is the one we had, but they have more or less expensive options. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MRA7PVS/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_BL8MwbZAYPH98

Yeah, seems like some of the objects in the UI have always been oversized. It’s like they copied toys for toddlers. The issues you describe are not limited to PCs. An applet will not fit on the full screen of a 12.9” iPad if you hold it in landscape orientation. Worse, the app wastes lots of space when you list your applets. If they made good use of screen space, you should be able to see about 2x the number of applets on screen.

Having said that, the browser version gives you at least 2 things you cannot get through the applet;

  1. A list of a services triggers and actions without having to connect to the service.
  2. A link to “Edit on the platform”.
u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/vinyl

Apparently they reintroduced that model because you can get them brand new off amazon. I'm pretty sure that's the same one I had back in the 80's too.

We have the fisher price table u/sneakybunghole (quality name btw!) suggested and we also have the leap frog music table and she loves both of them! She hasn't lost interest, she's been using them since she started pulling up at 7mos and is almost 11mos now.

My husband and I do the same thing- we're kind of known for being the family pranksters, haha. When my sister-in-law had her first kid, I Googled the most obnoxious toys and came up with this. The buttons are so sensitive that it tends to go off on its own (which gets really creepy when you hear "I love you!" coming from a room with no one in it).
