(Part 2) Reddit mentions: The best can openers

Okay, I gotta say, that cheese grater looks pretty awesome! My mom really likes grating fresh cheese for stuff, so I'm definitely going to let her know about that! Thank you!

I don't know if this is the exact one my mom has, but she can't live without her weighted rolling pin. My mom loves baking pies, especially during the summer when we have lots of fresh fruit around! She purchased a weighted rolling pin last summer, and it's probably her favorite darn thing in the kitchen! She loves it because she doesn't have to press down really hard on her dough anymore. The pin does the work for her! Another family favorite is the NutriBullet, which we received this Christmas. Ever since we got it, we've hardly stopped making smoothies. My mom even came up with a bunch of delicious health recipes because she's awesome like that. I like using it for super quick breakfast smoothies on the go- I'm a college student, and I'm always in a rush in the morning and usually skip eating breakfast. I don't think we could imagine our lives without it now!

I found this adorable bunny honey jar a while back and I fell in love! I LOVE honey and my family uses it in a lot of things. I personally love tea with honey and lemon! We also all love bunnies- we have a pet bunny who is the sweetest thing! I thought this bunny jar was just so so cute, and I know it would put a smile on my mom's face!

1. This Travel Pill case it is large enough to hold 4 large pills per section, and has 4 sections per day.
   
   
2. The Flip and Tumble Grocery bag . This bag holds a surprising amount, and because it fits on the shoulder, not carried in the hands, it makes it easier to carry.
   
   
3. Table Mate tray table this is the cheaper version of what others suggested, and is a bit less sturdy, but if you are on a limited budget, it works great.
   
   
4. OXO Good Grips Products I love the can opener, but any of their Good Grips products work great. They are specificly designed for people with arthritis.
   
   
5. I feel the most important one of all, though, is a fuzzy comfort blanket . People underestimate how much better you can feel just from wrapping yourself in something soft and warm for a bit. Even if you still hurt, it can make you feel like you can cope with it better.
   
   
   EDIT: I just thought of another thing. The whole homemade coupon book is cheesy, but the truth is that offering to help them with housework, do some laundry, or even just spend time with them is an awesome gift in most cases.

So this is against the grain of most of the can opener recommendations I see here, but I really like OXO's smooth-edge can openers. My parents have the design with two arms, and I have this one with one arm. The two-arm one is better IMO, because the lid can get stuck in the one-armed opener after it's been taken off the can. But both are great openers.

Honestly all of the good grips stuff is super high quality and super comfortable to use. I own a few things from that line, it's all lasted beyond 5 years with only the most minor cosmetic damage (for example a tiny dent on a spatula handle because I accidentally left it in a hot skillet.) It's all really rust-resistant and the grips are super nice and super durable.

Plus, I like the smooth-edge openers a lot more than the traditional kind. If you've only used the more traditional kind of opener it can take some getting used to because it doesn't "feel" like it's cutting. But it takes the lid off in a much more pleasing and precise way and there's no sharp or rough edges on the can or lid that you can cut yourself on. Instead of cutting metal, I think they sort of peel it back and cut through the epoxy seal that glues the lid onto the can.

Get the new one. The vintage stuff is cool, but make your own vintage stuff.

The point of getting vintage stuff now is that a lot of it is considered high quality. In this case, you have access to the same quality new. The bonus is that you support American folks making your high quality materials. The resale market adds little to the people pressing these things out.

As /u/xxfactory said, running the cap under hot water will help melt out the sugar. I also really like non-slip pads like these to help you get a better grip. If you need good leverage for larger stuck jar caps, like Luxardo jars, jar openers like these give you super leverage.

Some products I find help:

• Can opener
  
• Jar opener (twisty lids)
  
• Easy-open containers (mostly preference; I prefer the Snap and Pop kinds)
  
• Well-oiled pans, or at least non-stick stuff (a good pan/pot is underrated, I think)
  
  Freezing things is a great idea. He could still help you prepare and cook the things, and still have options if he doesn't have energy to cook sometimes. Lots of people do this, hence the sub /r/MealPrepSunday :P
  
  Maybe consider a crockpot (/r/slowcooking)? Might be good for a beginner, and the recipes usually don't require a ton of work.
  
  This likely won't be an option now, or ever, but if it comes up: a powerchair with an elevate feature is amazing. I mostly use this feature in the kitchen and am honestly unsure how I'd manage without it. (I'm probably overall weaker than your brother, but I can stand for a little bit, too. "A little bit" doesn't really cut it while cooking, IME.)
  
  One site that's great for beginners, I think, is Budget Bytes. They provide step-by-step pictures for most/all recipes, and, obviously, aim for affordable dishes.
  
  EDIT: Toaster ovens are amazing and so much easier than a regular oven.

Hoboy. Got a couple that I've tried and used in emergency situations.

First, you need a knife. No matter what. I recommend the Gerber Gator. Mine has been holding strong for the last 8 years, and I always keep it in my pocket, unless I'm flying somewhere. Holds a serious edge, no matter how you abuse it.

Water is a big deal. I have these stashed in my BOB, my car, and a couple floating around the house. Used one on a camping trip, drank boiled water from a murky stream, water tasted delicious and I didn't get any bugs from it, so there you go.

Flashlights are important. This is where you might scoff: The best handheld lights I've purchased are, hands down, these cheap things from the 99 Cent Only stores. We used them during the big blackout of 2010 here in Dallas, aka the Snowpocalypse. My house was without power for 5 days. Hand-cranked, bright as hell, durable, and cost a buck each. Amazing little lights. I went out and bought 10 more of them after that. They're now in every room of the house, and I have given them to friends as gifts.

Aside from flashlights, we used a Coleman Rechargeable in the main living room as well. I sing the praises of this light all the time, and show it off to friends. Comes with both a wall charger, and a car charger. Both chargers tuck into the base for easy storage. This light, on the low setting, is rated for 10 hours, but we used it for 14 hours one night without draining the battery. Low is good enough to read by. High Setting, however, is literally painful to look at directly. If you need it, this lamp can get amazingly BRIGHT, impressively so when you realize it only has one LED bulb. During the blackout, we charged it during the day in my car. Great investment.

Tying materials are damned important, says this guy who loves bushcraft and has seen a couple of disasters firsthand. Get you the following:

• Paracord
  
• 20# test fishing line
  
• Heavy duty cotton thread
  
  They're inexpensive, and if you ever need them, YOU WILL be happy to have them on hand.
  
  Get thee to an Army/Navy Surplus and buy a shit-ton of cheap P38 can openers. Fuck buying them online, unless it's bulk - my Surplus store sells them at $.20 a pop, or 6 for a dollar. I always keep one on my keychain. They're absolutely invaluable.
  
  A good DC inverter for 12v car sockets turns any car into an instant, medium-powered generator. I keep one in my car, as does my wife.
  
  Buy a handcuff key and keep it on your keychain, along with a mini LED light and a P38. Never know when you might have to use it.
  
  FIREMAKING TOOLS ARE A MUST. Bic lighters, Magnesium/striker fire blocks, waterproof matches, hell, I once started a campfire with a magnifying glass. Keep fire tools handy and ready.
  
  Aside from all that, I can only note the following: Lightsticks, a first aid kit, bottled water, a machete, a good length of proper boat anchor rope, blah blah, normal survival shit.

I have a DYMO 450 turbo also and I mainly use 30334 size labels. Both Amazon and Inventory Lab will print this size.

If you want to use the Dymo with Amazon directly you need to use Amazon's Scan & Label page. Inventory > Manage FBA Shipments, then near the top of the page look for Scan & Label

It prints out labels for one SKU at a time.

Since Chrome changed, it's a little more difficult but you pick the product you need a label for by scanning it or entering your SKU. Then you can either print it or save it. If you print, the chrome print window opens and you need to play with settings to make sure the label fits.

1. Select the Dymo printer
   
2. More Settings > select paper size. 30334 if you are using that size. If you don't see it, you need to print using system dialog
   
3. No margins.
   
   You only need to do this for the first label.
   
   
   
   Inventory Lab is a lot easier. You run the printer setup under account settings to choose your label size. Then you choose if you want the label to print automatically when you list an item, or only when you click the print button.
   
   
   
   Keep in mind, you are suppose to use removable labels when applying directly to the products. That said, Amazon doesn't follow their own rule here and I've learned that the longer removable labels are on, the less removable they are.
   
   I've used a few label brands.
   
   

• Best quality is the DYMO brand but they are absurdly expensive.

  I use the laser printer for shipping labels mostly but sometimes for product labels if I'm sending like 80 of the same thing.
  
  I spent a lot of time when I started, trying to decide what printer to get. I started with the laser because: 1. I can use it as a regular printer for non-fba stuff, 2. It will print both fnsku and shipping labels, 3. It is really inexpensive.
  
  I added the DYmo later because: 1. I hated all the wasted labels if I wasn't printing a full sheet, 2. I do RA and matching labels from a sheet with 30+ different products is time-consuming, 3. I often need 1 or 2 labels and it was difficult to do on the laser.
  
  I haven't looked in awhile but my dream printer would be a thermal transfer printer that is large enough to print shipping labels as well as fnsku. I just can't justify spending $500 on it.

Sometimes the simple solution is the best.

grippy pad to hold the sleeve and a tiny screwdriver through the airflow hole to torque.

I've added the grippy pads to my vape toolbox. I use them more often than I care to admit.

Electric can opener! It's my favorite thing and there's even a tool on the end for pop top cans. This is the one I have. Before I got it I seriously struggled with that all the time. I didn't even know they were a thing until my roommate brought it home as a surprise. I think he was sick of having to turn the crank all the time.

If you do a lot of writing or drawing, grab some thick pens or mechanical pencils. Like, this thick. That's another thing I wish I'd discovered much sooner. Crayola Model Magic is great to make nice and soft custom grips for pens out of, if you don't mind them being a little unprofessional looking.

Also a nice scrubby brush with a long handle for the shower was wonderful when my shoulders decided to jump in on the arthritis game.

Can't speak to exactly how long it will last but I bought this almost a year ago. It is made in the US, it's all heavy steel and feels super substantial

edit: apparently it's an EZ-DUZ-IT but not branded as such. That doesn't change my thoughts on the product

It's not for everyone but I still really love this

I have a ceramic letter opener that looks like this. The blade itself is the size of a sesame seed and protrude out of the holder only enough to cut through 1 or 2 sheets of paper. I've had it for over 5 years now and used it to open all my mails. It's as sharp as I first got it. Best of all it was a free promotional item and can be had for less than $5 on ebay.

These are nice but pricy.

I use this for blister packs. Only was $6, and is magnetic. Still works 3+ years later. Sometimes it's awkward for them, but it works like a dream generally without issue.

I'm guessing maybe this? They said "that looks like it fits on Batman's utility belt" so if this were all black, it'd fit the bill. Though this isn't rechargeable.

When my ex and I split, I took just the bare minimum of kitchen things. Totally forgot a can opener.

I decided to be all fancy and not microwave my dinner one night and was halfway through cooking when I realized my mistake as I stared at a can of black beans.

I stabbed that thing with a chef's knife until I could pry open a triangle-shaped opening on the top and then shook it like a polaroid picture until I had everything.

I'm still amazed to this day I didn't chop off a finger.

My last bathtub was missing the plug (and we weren't there long enough to bother fixing it) - I used one of those flexible jar gripper opener things. I had to hold it down with something (like a heavy shampoo bottle) while the bathtub was filling up, but after that the pressure of the water kept it in place and it worked great.

Naw.. You want OG can opener? Here you go This thing was the best can opener I ever used. It locked the can in once you closed it and you could walk away from it with the can hanging on to do something else if you wanted to. Was fast too. Shit, now I may have to buy one. Haven't thought about this in years.

Well we didnt have a bucket opener. But after seeing my hands the manager got one and named it after me.

I have the same complaint. When you use a normal opener, the lid fits just inside the can so you can put it in and squeeze out the tunawater. With the no-cut kind (I have this kind which works pretty much the same, but from the side) you're left with a lid that fits over the top and does not fit inside, so you have to sort of warp the can a bit to get it to snug up but not so much that the tunawater doesn't drip out.

I've read (on Amazon reviews, so take that for what it's worth) that the Swing-Aways' quality suffered in recent years. I'm probably going to go with the EZ-Duz-It. Thanks though!

Why else would they make magnetic can openers?

I prefer the Rosle can opener. Been 5+ years, seems to still leave non-sharp, resealable lids alongside open cans.

That's weird - I've bought that brand quite a few times and never had an issue opening it. If you don't have one, I recommend getting a rubber jar opener. I use mine all the time and it makes opening things so much easier.

This bothers me too, actually. Problem is, the sinks at my gym (like most public bathroom sinks) don't have stoppers or a way to close the drain. I have taken to bringing one of those rubber jar opener things designed for weak-wristed numales, the forearmly challenged, and little girls with which to block the drain.

Of course, the sink is an absolute horrorshow when I'm done shaving (whole head and face because of weak bald man genes/Jason Statham look after a couple days), but that's easily remedied with some more water and a towel I'm going to just throw in the wash when I get home anyway.
