Fellow hEDS, got married last July (pre-diagnosis), and I think I’ve got some ideas for you:

For the shoes, not sure where to look - I have really HUGE feel (size 12-13 women’s), so I struggled too, but ended up finding a cheap pair that looked great and kinda worked for me. They were tolerable but not comfortable, and I regret not focusing more time on finding a better pair.

For the registry, I’ve had really good luck with the OXO Good Grips series of stuff (their handles are chunky enough that I don’t tend to sublux my fingers, even gripping hard)

When looking for a freezer I recommend going and seeing them in person - bring some cardboard that’s been cut to the sizes of kegs plus one inch. A half barrel is 16” diameter - Quarter barrel is 11” - Sixth barrel is 9”. I’d recommend cutting 2-3 of each so you can see how many combinations you can put together. I've read elsewhere about the cardboard cutout technique, planning on doing this at Sears, Lowes and Best buy in the coming days. Sears and Lowes have a few 5-7cu freezers in the $170-$200 range (Kenmore and Idylis seem to be the ones in that price range), and I'm hoping one will have the right mixture of footprint, running cost and reviews. Great point about mixing sizes too - it will make sense to keep a spare in there in case we run out of one type of beer while we have guests.

Aluminum Co2 Tank but at $55.99 I'm not seeing the advantage other than it saving me 4.25" in height, although I guess I should check see if that's the difference between getting it on the shelf or not.

The two I linked are much the same save the extras as you say. Looking back at the kits they have that come without cleaner and tray, the difference I see between the $164.99 Standard and the $229.99 Premium kit is the addition of stainless steel perlick faucets - there is an option to build your own kit with them, and there the difference between faucets is $29, so why the kits are $65 apart, I have no idea. I've emailed them to ask as it makes no sense to me.

My kitchen is pretty full of various devices. Let's see:

• Asian hot water pot. I love tea, so it's nice to just hold the "dispense" button and get a mug of boiling water.
  
• Speaking of tea, skip tea bags (unless you're using these for your own tea, which you probably only need for really fine stuff like chamomile). Instead I use this tea infuser, which works great for most teas. This one isn't very good at infusing tea, but it is really cute.
  
• Prefer coffee? Get a French press; it's pretty cheap and it's way better than drop coffee. You just need a cheap coffee grinder so you can have fresh grounds.
  
• Yes, I said a cheap coffee grinder. You can upgrade to a nice burr grinder later, and that will free up your cheap blade grinder for spice duty!
  
• Asian rice cooker with fuzzy logic. I manage to burn rice on the stove, and the dumb mechanical rice cookers are no better. This thing is fantastic, and useful for more than just plain white rice. Mixed or brown rice, jambalaya, etc...
  
• Toaster oven. I end up using this a lot, either to cook small meals (pizza bites, or breakfast (two slices of bacon, two frozen fried chicken strips, two frozen biscuits, 20 minutes at 375)) or for actually toasting things (I insist on toasting hamburger and hot dog buns).
  
• Kitchen scale. I'm using a crappy spring model, but soon I intend to get a decent electronic one. Just read this article from NYT if you're not convinced of why a scale should be a must-have. I'll probably buy the scale suggested by Cooking for Engineers.
  
• Microplane grater. I just bought it, and it rocks. Citrus zest, cheese, nutmeg...
  
• Tongs. I don't know how I got by for so long without them.
  
• Cast iron skillet. It's easily my favorite pan to cook in, because I can do so much with it.
  
• Do you need a pepper grinder? Get the Unicorn 9" Magnum Black. Nevermind what it sounds like, just buy this one; don't even bother shopping around for others. It's that good.
  
• Instant-read thermometer. I don't know if I recommend the exact one I have (a $20 from Taylor, which may have already broken) but having one is essential. Now that I'm using it I'm realizing how badly I was overcooking a lot of meat and sausage.
  
• I have something like this "safe" can opener, which cuts the can open from the side rather than the top. The idea is that you're only cutting through glue, and so the blade never touches food, which is a big hazard for contamination since people rarely clean their can openers thoroughly enough. So this is great in principle, but not all cans are equal, and sometimes it just totally fails to open some cans.
  
• Kitchenaid mixer. My mom got it for me for my birthday, and I have to say it's damn good, if you mix things a lot. Does a much better job than other mixers I've used. I also got the grinder attachment, which I've been experimenting with, so that gives the kitchenaid a bit more use.
  
• Slow cooker. Shouldn't be any surprise there why it's useful.
  
• Walmart's Tramontina stainless steel pans are about as good as All-Clad, but less than half the price. (Shocking! Quality stuff from Walmart?) I just got them so they haven't seen much use (see above comment about cast iron skillet) but I can already tell how nice they are compared to the bargain stuff I was using before.

So this is against the grain of most of the can opener recommendations I see here, but I really like OXO's smooth-edge can openers. My parents have the design with two arms, and I have this one with one arm. The two-arm one is better IMO, because the lid can get stuck in the one-armed opener after it's been taken off the can. But both are great openers.

Honestly all of the good grips stuff is super high quality and super comfortable to use. I own a few things from that line, it's all lasted beyond 5 years with only the most minor cosmetic damage (for example a tiny dent on a spatula handle because I accidentally left it in a hot skillet.) It's all really rust-resistant and the grips are super nice and super durable.

Plus, I like the smooth-edge openers a lot more than the traditional kind. If you've only used the more traditional kind of opener it can take some getting used to because it doesn't "feel" like it's cutting. But it takes the lid off in a much more pleasing and precise way and there's no sharp or rough edges on the can or lid that you can cut yourself on. Instead of cutting metal, I think they sort of peel it back and cut through the epoxy seal that glues the lid onto the can.

If you're looking for something similar looking, maybe the Smart Grinder Pro by Breville/Sage? If anything the stainless steel finish all round looks nice in my kitchen. They cost around £179 and can be purchased on Amazon. Whilst Breville don't count them as user-serviceable (in that Baratza will encourage you to open up their machines), they're pretty good for the price point, and obviously Amazon provide a 1 year warranty although with most things on Amazon I've found even after three years if you hit them up on the live support chat they'll replace it at no cost whenever.

I find even on the coarsest setting it produces a good consistency grind that is coarse enough for French Press. It's not exactly on par with the £4000 Ditting Grinder we have at work but for a sub-£200 machine it's brilliant. I haven't yet used it for espresso but it could possibly be good enough, certainly more than sufficient for a pressurised portafilter so would be hopeful that it works without the pressurised portafilter. People have varying results with this though.

Should probably mention it has 60 grind settings, and the removeable upper burr has eleven fine-tune settings.

It's definitely caters towards the entry-level-looking-at-something-a-little-bit-better market, but the locking and removeable hopper, combined with the intuitive display and programmable doser for up to 12 cups make it an excellent second machine.

Forget the pull top and get yourself a CAN OPENER. Scour your local good wills or second hand stores and find yourself one of those edge can openers because it creates a lid so that you can close your cans again, but the lid has no sharp edges to cut yourself on. Like this:

I've been surviving on dollar tree's $1 can of beef stew and bolillo rolls from Kroger. So long as you keep your bag of bread closed they won't dry out, but they won't last more than 4 days.

Peanut butter, also oats. But really its all about your canned foods. Get mixed vegitable canned foods.

Dollar tree has your best price because you need to stretch out your dollar per day.

Your beef jerky is a waste of money because its not really good source of protein. When it comes to grams of protein per dollar nothing beats black beans, but, I ate nothing but black beans and ended up shitting my guts out so your next best source is canned tuna fish, or the $1 beef stews mentioned above.

As for your chocolate craving, good luck. m&ms won't melt, but they are expensive.

Hey man, some quick tips on your bag. First, figure out its purpose. Is it designed to get you from work to home, where you have more resources? Or are you planning on being supported by it for longer periods of time?

-Lose the can opener and get something like this. That thing is way too much weight to carry for the possibility that you may have to open a can of spaghetti-o's.

-You're going to need more water, especially if you plan on eating those brick rations. Throw in some bottled water and just swap it out every so often.

-You need better first aid. As I see it, you pretty much have pills and bandaids. Since you're just starting out, I recommend going to a sporting goods store and picking up two things-- a premade first aid kit (whatever size/price you're comfortable with, as long as you know how to use everything in it) and a small tackle box to keep all those pills in. Write the medication type, how many mg per pill, and expiration date on each compartment.No sense in carrying around all those bottles.

-You need a better multitool. You don't need to buy an eighty dollar Leatherman, but that thing looks like you got it out of a cereal box. A couple of weeks ago I picked up this knife and multitool set from Home Depot, and they're pretty good for backups. Husky hand tools also have a lifetime warranty.

-You need a better flashlight. /r/flashlight can help you out here.

-You could probably stand to lose a blade or two.

Great start! Feel free to x-post to /r/bugout, as they'll have some more suggestions. Here are my thoughts:

• I agree with gittenlucky: if the first-aid kit is mostly off-the-shelf, you may want to consider adding some pain killers, anti-diarrhea, and any prescription meds you might require. Some people also recommend iosat tabs, if you're concerned about nukes. If you're comfortable collecting and using them, also consider minor surgical gear, antibiotics, etc. Maybe some sun/bug protection? If you're walking, moleskin and foot powder?
  
  
• Although I noticed you have at least one pull-top food can, the P-38 can opener is lighter and surprisingly effective. If you're interested in lightening the load, they're available cheaply. Lighter than carrying cans, you might alternatively consider a stack of Datrex bars.
  
  
• While the candles might be romantic on a calm day, I'd swap them out for a flashlight, head light, or a pack of chemical glow lights. Each stick lasts about 8 hours and is pretty bright.
  
  
• Have you considered any defensive items, even if it's as benign as pepper spray?
  
  

You should get this because you might not think that you need one until you're making spaghetti and don't have one. Also a can opener is super important.

No electric parts. Basically works like a regular can opener, but uses a squeezing motion instead of a twisting motion, so you can operate it with one hand.

Edit: One of the pictures shows a second hand, but I am pretty sure that it just to show that it opens up for easy of cleaning. You can probably use a table edge to help you pry it open.

Get the new one. The vintage stuff is cool, but make your own vintage stuff.

The point of getting vintage stuff now is that a lot of it is considered high quality. In this case, you have access to the same quality new. The bonus is that you support American folks making your high quality materials. The resale market adds little to the people pressing these things out.

The magnet at the front is perfect for lifting the lid out of the can and frankly I never want another can opener now that we've got this one and I currently have two functioning hands.

Something similar for jars would be awesome, though.

I would recommend the EZ-Dus-It as it is USA made, but this is what I would recommend.

It could still break or you could get a dud.

If you wish a true BIFL the only options are manual ones like the P-38 and P-51 and maybe some stronger ones.

I have always loved OXO stuff. THIS is the can opener my girlfriend has and it is AMAZING. I cannot comment on longevity but it sure seems pretty solid. My parents have an older oxo model that I can't seem find on amazon but it has lasted them forever. The closest I can find is THIS

Supposedly Swing Away was bought out and is cheap crap from China now. The old USA factory makes the good ones under the name ez duz it. I just bought one a few weeks ago and it has opened 3 cans so far. I'll report back in 10 years and let you all know. Make sure to get the black handle one.

After looking at the Amazon page, there are counterfeit ones being sold. So make sure you buy directly with Amazon.com as the seller. I remember reading the comments and being careful when buying mine so hopefully I got a good one.

New addition to my keychain. It's a US army issue can opener first developed back in the 40's. They will last pretty much forever, stories abound of guys still carrying (and using) their grandfathers P-38 which was passed on to them. It's super compact, it pretty much disappears on a keychain and it can be used for a number of other purposes - flat blade screwdriver, scraper, the blade is perfect for cleaning under your nails or opening packages. The name comes from the 38 times you have to puncture a can with it to open it. There is a larger version called the P-51 which is a little heavier duty and easier to operate, but either will open a can easily.

Amazon sells two of them here for three bucks, or you can get a twenty pack here for ten bucks. I bought the twenty pack and scattered some around the house and in my vehicles, figure I will never have to worry about not having a can opener again.

What /bodobeers said. I just bought an igloo 5.1 cuft chest freezer just for fermentation. (My bigger chest freezer is being turned into a keezer.) Got a slightly dinged one from Home Depot for ~$130, new ones are~$160-200 depending on brand. You can go with a 3cuft chest freezer (about same price, less space width wise than 5.1), but you will have to make a collar for it to fit carboy+airlock due to the hump. you can get the plugin Inkbird controller for around ~$30-40 for a cheaper temp controller with doesn't require wiring. If you want to be more precise with the Inkbird though, you will also need a heating element. If you don't mind it being off by 5 or degrees then you are ok with cold side only. I have one of the more expensive Johnson Controllers that are pretty precise with just cold side for my fermenter, and an Inkbird for my bigger keezer build for I'm not as concerned about exact temperature with the keezer.

Can Opener

If you have an ikea nearby, they also have a great kitchen section especially for inexpensive flatware sets.

As a single guy who's been living alone for a few years, I'd suggest getting the following. Remember, you can pick up stuff over time; doesn't have to be all at once...

• Microwave & refrigerator w/ freezer. Your place probably already has these, but if not, put at least a basic version high on your priority list...
  
• Electric kettle for boiling water for tea, coffee, etc.
  
• A reusable mug, for holding the tea/coffee. I got mine with a single-cup plastic drip coffee maker for $10 or so about 7~8 years ago. I switched to tea a while back, but still use the mug every day... Avoid going to Starbucks and you'll save a lot of money.
  
• One decent bowl. One decent plate. Disposable crap for when that's not enough to cut it. Adjust based on how often you have people over; I never have people over.
  
• Speaking of disposable stuff: a roll of paper towels and some plastic zip-lock bags.
  
• Can opener. I prefer a simple, cheap camping can opener (looks similar to this), but you should get some kind of can opener.
  
• Trash can and liners, if you don't already have them.
  
• It sounds like you already have a pot and pan. Assuming the pot has a lid, you're probably good there. If not, get a lid. Something to stir the pot with is probably also a good idea -- if you don't already have a cooking spoon of some sort, get one.
  
• Cutting board and a knife.
  
• Sponges and a bottle of dish soap. Those pots and pans aren't going to scrub themselves...
  
• Eating utensils -- e.g. fork, knife, spoon. Can be disposable or reusable, but you should have at least something to eat with...
  
• Measuring cups and measuring spoons. (e.g. teaspoon, tablespoon) You can probably buy cheap plastic ones at your grocery store.
  
• Salt and pepper. Cooking oil. (e.g. corn oil or some other kind of vegetable oil.)
  
• Basic food stuff. I'd recommend always keeping at least the basics for making sandwiches (e.g. bread + lunch meat + mayo), milk and cereal, and a few microwave dinners on hand for when things go wrong or you don't feel like cooking.

I have one for the kitchen and one for the camping gear. The lid can even be reused since it will fit back on top of the can (doesn't really seal but kinda, better than a normal can at least). The blade doesn't have to be huge or do much in the way of puncturing, so it will last a lot longer. And since the blade doesn't get into the food itself, it doesn't get dirty and you don't have to wash it or put it in the dishwasher

Food, think of it as a camping trip, or survival situation. Bring only what you will actually eat. And haul out all your trash when you leave. Since refrigeration isn't possible, bring non-perishable stuff. If you bring cans, don't forget the can opener. Better yet, get one of these on your key chain and you'll never be without a can opener. When we went we had an RV, but we still primarily brought canned, pickled and dried goods. Pickles, cheese, assorted crackers, salami, ramen, tuna, bread, apples, oranges, oh and trash bags. Since you're in a tent, if you wanna have something warm one day, maybe coffee, tea or even soup, pick yourself up a cheap little backpacking stove and if you wanna get really fancy, get a cheap little mess kit too.

As for water, as a general rile of thumb 1 gallon a day is enough to just get by and not cramp up if you're eating really light, 2 is better, especially if you plan on eating normally, 3 if you are drinking and dealing with the heat, mild physical activity.

I've found the locking type work the best and last the longest. My mom has had one for 10+ years and my wife and I got one when we got married, still working great.

It works amazingly. It's the most I've ever spent on a can opener but it's way higher quality than the shit I used to buy. The only annoying part is that it's hard to drain things like tuna. I used to push the lid down and use that to keep the tuna in and push the water out while turning it upside down in the sink. Can't do that with this new opener. I might buy the other type too just so I have one for that kind of situation.

If you buy from Amazon, I highly recommend paying the extra few cents (4 cents right now) and make sure you buy one where the seller is Amazon.com (not just fulfilled by Amazon.com) to reduce the chance of getting a counterfeit.

For instance, two "just launched" Amazon sellers are offering the can opener at the cheapest price of $8.87. Your "made in usa" can opener will be shipped from Brazil and Canada. You can see in the product reviews going back three years that counterfeits are a big problem with this product.

You sir are correct! A good micrometer, a sharp pair of dykes, a "safety" can opener (something like this ) and a good dial depth gauge are what you really need. If you aren't cutting the seam and taking internal measurements then you are really just guessing.

Seam overlap (which is actually a calculated measurement), wrinkle rating, and making sure the sealing compound is making good contact are the most critical measurements. All of which can only be checked by cutting that sucker and pulling it apart.

Do you buy cans from ball or crown? Both of them should send out a seamer tech if you just call them up who will walk you through the adjustments, taking proper measurements, and what the specs on your exact can/end combo should be.

This is the one I have. It's expensive, but I love it because you can use the lid to reclose the can and the contents will keep in the fridge for a few more days.

If your mom doesn't have a non-fussy can opener, check this one out! My parents got this can opener and I would have to say it is by far the best can opener I've used. It runs about $41 on Amazon and I've also seen it a JCPenney and I think Bed, Bath, Beyond. It's so simple to use that you just put the can right under the half-circle metal holding bar thing, you push the lever down with just one finger, and kinda hold around the can lightly to make sure it doesn't fall. It's not messy at all since the blade cuts right under the ridge of the can and doesn't touch the food so you can even put it back on as a lid. I get stupidly excited when I get to use this thing. Mom won't let me take it with me to my new apartment, which makes me sad, but that's how good this thing is. Once I can afford it, I'll be getting one for myself!

Leafy scoops would improve my life because I have 3 giant oak trees in my yard that spew leaves and pollen everywhere. I rake up 6 bags of leaves a week, and it's only going to get worse. These would save me a lot of time and back pain.

Sure, an easy way to deal with that is a Johnson temperature control unit. You plug the freezer into it, plug it into the wall, set the desired temp on the unit, run the temperature probe attached to the unit down into the freezer, and when it senses the freezer getting too warm, it turns on the power until it's back down to temp, then cuts it off again. More technically inclined people hardwire a panel directly into the freezer itself, but this method works quite well.

I had pretty much the same problem as you. I had a can opener that had been going strong for 20+ years, but it was all metal and was getting rusted. I eventually threw it out and got another metal can opener. I tried to open a large can with it, and it basically crapped out on it. Frustrated that I had already thrown away my 20 year old can opener, I decided to get one that I would be able to keep for 20 more years again.

This one should do the trick. Quite cheap but it'll definitely get the job done!

I've used this for a while. I'm impressed so far.

I would have a P-38 or P-51 military style can opener. They are small, and can also be used as a small blade or box cutter in case of emergency. I keep one on key ring. I also have this tiny flashlight which you could make smaller by removing the clip that hooks to a keychain. It is tiny and bright. A universal handcuff key, a tiny firesteel you can scrape with the P-38 can opener, and a tiny compass. Those are nice places to start.

Here are some recommendations. If you are doing batoning and splitting, I would recommend something with a thick spine (and learning how to do it correctly). I wouldn't open cans with my knife because it's a poor tool choice for that and there are plenty of dirt cheap can openers.

These are some good high carbon blades in a variety of prices. I do recommend buying one you can feel to get a good idea if the grip is right, but this should give you some variety of makes and what they offer. These are all black anodized coatings which will help keep rust away. My preference is for a knife in the 7 inch length range for chopping, no serrations (pain to upkeep and don't cut, they rip) and a neutral finish because black knives are hard to find if you drop it in the dark. NEVER buy a knife that isn't full tang.

Go out and get a feel for handles, blade shapes and lengths and try what you can borrow before making a decision.

I'm not usually one to tout hamilton beach, nor electronic things that sit on countertops, but here I go. This can opener was given to me as a gift. I internally scoffed and rolled my eyes but...it has turned out to be one of my favorite doo hickies in the kitchen. It has lasted me about two years now (far beyond what I was expecting. Every electronic can opener my mother had in the past failed. miserably.) What I love about it is it opens cans on the lip, so it doesn't leave a sharp edge. Also, no straining my wrist. My only only complaint, is that when I need to drain things like tuna, the way it cuts the lids off does not allow the lid to be pressed into the can.

I bet this is a great can opener, but I long ago stopped buying can openers that leave dirty sharp-edged lids that like to fall down into the can and into your food.

The only issue is that it's not BIFL. It's an electric can opener, and all of those that I've seen (lately) are only likely to last 8 or 10 years, unlike my mother's electric can opener from 1971 that still works today.

The handles have come off enough I did some minor surgery with superglue, but they stay on and it's functional! We had one of those regular metal ones while I was growing up; after enough trips through the dishwasher it rusted to the point of not being usable.

Yeah, ended up the LED thing when I went looking for a replacement Classic and found the LED on sale for the same price.

I have the Zyliss can opener that works pretty much exactly the same (and is under $15, though I actually found one cheaper than that at Whole Foods - go figure). Really, there is no reason you wouldn't want one of these over a traditional can opener that give you can lids with razor-sharp edges. Highly recommend it. Seriously.

You can even replace the lid on the can after opening, so it's great when you open a can and empty half of it, and then just slap on the lid and throw it in the fridge.

Oxo Can Opener (Amazon) opens the can at the side instead of the end. I usually have to drive it around can 2-3 times to get a complete cut. But it makes a nice smooth opening.

I always keep an EZ-DUZ-IT around for small cans or as a back up. Hasn't failed me yet.

Not "life", but my wife & I have been using this Oxo good grip for about 10 years.

Actually, Swing Away was the old name that got bought by a company making cheap can openers. They bought the design and the name but use cheap metal. For the modern equivalent get an EZ-DUZ-IT, which is made in the USA of the same high quality parts (and I think in the same factory) as the old ones.
