Good luck to you!
If your parents allow you to keep the cat I would highly encourage you to check out some resources on cat behavior and cat care, as many people new to cats don’t really know as much as they think they know.
Basic important information you need to know off the bat:
My recommendations for more info on cats:
I have five cats and three huge cast boxes and oh my god I hate cleaning them. So. Much. Then I bought litter genies and I can't tell you how much better it is. The bag inserts can get pricey, but for me it's absolutely worth it. To conserve on the bags, too, when I cut a full bag, they tell you to cut it so there is enough material to tie it up when you pull the full bag, but I don't do that. I cut just enough that I can get the bag out without the mess falling out # then I put that bag into a plastic shopping bag and tie THAT up. Figure that saves me one more bag use from the genie kit. Seriously, I love these things. So, so much easier now to just check the box whenever I walk by and scoop into the genie if needed. It never gets gross in the litter box this way. Cannot recommend enough! I think there's ways to DIY your own bag system as well, but I'm happy with the official refills.
I need a way to reduce the smell of kitty poooooo so a Litter Genie would be perfect to seal in that fresh from the kitty scent.
If I were you saying "What should I stock my house with?", I'd make sure to get basic seasons and spices, organizational things such as a silverware holder, spice racks, and shelving units. Dish towels, dish dryer, and cleaning supplies are also important. There are plenty of other things that you need, but these are just a few suggestions.
Thank you for the contest and I wish you luck in the move!
I use the pine litter and double layer box as well. It's cheap and lasts way longer than regular litter. I can't really say too much on the smell though. The litter itself smells way better, but since it doesn't clump around the poop when the cat does its business you can smell that. Either that or my cat has lethal shits lol
I also have a Litter Genie which I know isn't zero waste, but it limits the amount of bags I need to use to clean her poop. I scoop it in there and it holds it smell free for about 2-3 weeks before it gets full and I have to take it out.
+1 to the cat tower.
I have 3 cats and their favorite thing to play with is packing paper! I have a ton of it in my house and they love to make tunnels and pounce in it. And it is free! I find the chewy.com uses it the most (they know their clientele).
They also like to play with their crinkle tube and any sort of wand type toy. They also like a toy called "Cat's Meow." For me, I find the most helpful item is the Litter Genie. I know I could just take the waste to the trash every time I scoop, but that is really inconvenient. The Litter Genie really contains the cat pee odor so it is really worth the extra cost to me.
Kitty photos for proof
Let me introduce you to the Litter Genie... with a good scoopable litter and this gem right next to it, there is no excuse not to scoop the poop immediately... buy it for her and be a super duper nice guy and change it out for her weekly.
But think about your long term relationship with someone that lives like this now.

Ferrets can be sensitive to hay. It can cause them to itch. Words from my vet (I wanted to take cute thanksgiving pictures, which is why I inquired). You really need to scoop his litter box morning and night. The only thing that will help with smell is upkeep. You can buy one of these and scoop everyday, nice and simple, and then change the bag in it once a week.
You don't flush your toilet twice a week do you? Your cats, even if you have a separate box for each, have to wallow through whatever they put in there until you clean it.
As a result, as they are digging around in there doing/burying their business, they track extra fecal and urine traces around your house and on everything they jump on.
If cleaning them is "a chore" like most people think, get one of these coupled with one of these. Literally takes me less than 30 seconds to clean my litter box(es).
Sure, I'd love to help. :P That's actually one of the primary reasons why I started looking into flushing the litter. I couldn't find any litter that didn't leave behind a rancid smell even hours after they had used it. I have multiple litter boxes and 3 cats and was always cleaning and emptying litter boxes.
So I looked into different types of litters. A lot of the flushable litters are environmentally safe, for example. There are mulch based (which are fucking terrible, btw), corn based litters (which are decent but can still smell if you have more than one cat and aren't completely diligent with emptying it everytime they go), and fine grained clay based litters.
I tried a few different kinds, ordered some off the internet, specialty pet stores, pretty much everything. I ended up loving this one. It doesn't hold odor at all, has 3 ingredients, it doesn't smell chemical based, it dries quickly and thoroughly and it doesn't leave the room dusty. I have a rug under the cat box that catches anything that they might track away even, but it's never an issue.
As far as disposal, I use this thing (called the litter locker), which seals off the smell in between taking it outside. It has a plastic liner, but I just loosely knot the bottom, empty it into a double stacked paper bag, staple and throw it into the trash can. I've never had a problem with any kind of bag seepage because it's completely dry when I empty it from the cat box anyway-which solves the plastic problem. I also use this litter box, which means I don't touch the cat crap at all (except when I empty the boxes and litter locker completely for sanitization).
There are lots of options. :P
I'm an American but I use a Litter Genie which I think you can get also in the UK.

I personally love it because there's no smell.
I use something called a Litter Genie. It is like a disposable waste bin for kitty poop but it has a little compartment that traps air out so it kinda helps with the odor. Here is the link:

This is Pumpkin.
Pumpkin would like a Litter Genie.
PS Socks Rock
I scoop daily. I haven't scrubbed the box and don't bother unless there were overflow.
Get one of these. They will help you be a daily scooper. Also get a separate vacuum for the scattered litters. They spread it everywhere.
Since it's a new cat, you have no idea what destructive habits it may have. Provide plenty of scratching posts and be ready to apply bitters to cables.
I don't let the cats into the bedroom. I'm too much of a light sleeper + Hair free zone + I don't have to worry about cats messing with stuff. I curb meowing and scratching door behaviors with shock mats and double sided tape on the door.
This Litter Genie is so much easier and less wasteful than using individual bags: https://www.amazon.com/Litter-Genie-Plus-Ultimate-Control/dp/B007IRMTXE/ref=sr_1_1
Trash pickup is only available for people that live right in town, and it costs > $50/month. If you live in the city limits, you're technically not allowed to use the transfer sites, so you either have to pay for pickup or take it all the way to the dump south of town. Many people disregard that rule.
In the summer you have to store it in something that will keep the animals out of it. It can get smelly if you don't take it often enough. Hauling trash in the winter is much less gross because everything is frozen.
As for cat litter, the Litter Genie is pretty impressive.
This thing helps me a lot. I just keep it by the litter box and scoop when I see the cat has used the facilities. My cat's older, and he doesn't really cover his business anymore.
Half the pain is having to get a bag each time, plus (for me) hauling it out to the trash. This cuts that down significantly.
My cat is the same way, except with plastic. Also had intussusception and had expensive surgery. This is how I deal with it.
(1) Any plastic bags are discarded outside in the garbage immediately. If I need to keep some, they are stored in a high, out of the way place.
(2) I got a kitchen trash can with a lockable lid.
(3) My litter box is not near a bathroom, so I use the litter genie for waste disposal.
(4) Anything my cat might chew on is stored in a closet. The closet is always kept shut.
I know it's a pain in the butt, but I'm not going through another USD2,000 surgery again. I keep him on catnip and I've bought him interactive toys that don't contain plastic he might eat.
Edit cuz spelling.
I wanted one and I hate money... but I got sifting litter boxes off amazon, the ones with the top. My god it is literally the best thing I've ever done when it came to litter. Along with one of those poop boxes or whatever they are called that has the bag that you dump the litter into.
2 of these if you get these: Do not follow the instructions and leave the sifting pan in with the litter. Have a pan with litter, then the sifting pan, then the other pan. Take out the pan with the litter, dump it into the sifting pan, then pull out the sifting pan to sift the litter. Place sifting pan back in the empty pan, and place the litter pan back on top of the sifting pan.
1 of these
w/ these generic refils
with this litter
on these mats
It is the best system I have used and I have used almost everything. I had the litter robot gen 1 and ended hating it because it would get full so fast with 2 cats and then would get shit all over itself and then getting a bag in there was a pain in the ass and it stank
