You're absolutely right, friend. This will pass, no matter how dark the skies may seem now. We'll move on, and we'll be stronger for it! I'm curious, though, about something slightly off-topic. How do you feel about the current pony toys available from Hasbro? I'm holding on to a couple of these gift sets and a few of these four packs, in the hopes of running another giveaway. But by gum, I'd love to give one of them to you, if you'd like to have them. If you're uncomfortable with that, that's fine! I know giving out addresses and such is not always safe online. And I know that the toys aren't that great and some folks don't like them (which I can understand). But if you'd like either of those sets, they're all yours, friend. Anything to give you a smile!
Something to bear in mind: at this age, they cannot tell and do not care about "quality" when it comes to toys. Most small children, for example, would rather have a cheap bag of colourful plastic animals made in China than some $$$ exquisitely carved natural wood animal from some artisan craftsman.
They also break toys, lose toys, get bored with them, grow out of them.
I mention this because you may find a present that you think is glorious (and we would all share your view) but the kid might not be interested at all, past undoing the wrapping paper.
If you want something "lasting", I would suggest something cheap and cheerful toywise, and a really cute special outfit (buy at least a year size bigger) that her parents can enjoy on her behalf for the next year at least.
The one thing that my daughter was obsessed with, that you couldn't get in Australia for some reason (so maybe not in the UK either?) but I bought from the US was those Disney "magiclip" dolls and dresses. Super easy for a very small child to put the dresses on and off. Like this. It was one of the most "successful" presents ever.
You can get the entire set on Amazon for $90 right now. Obviously that's still a lot, but you'd for sure get those two with the glasses and I'm sure you could find buyers for the other bits to help make back a bit of the money.I found a cheaper one on ebay. Honestly $50 plus shipping doesn't seem so bad for that many ponies. Hope that helps you out some or that you are able to find the individual ponies if you don't want to get the whole set.

I second (third?) this! I got my son the Caring for Animals Farm and he LOVES it. So much so that I got then got him the Little People House thinking it would be a big win as well, but not so much. He loves putting the animals in the farm stalls and closing the doors.

Which solid molds are you looking for? There are two kinds; the blind bags and the Gift Set.
Now the gift set is simple: It comes with AJ, PP, TS, Spike, and Tia. It also comes with a book though it's a bit... well it's pretty crappy, but it's there. Costs about $25 on Amazon.
The Blind Bags are a bit more complicated. In the UK BB ponies are sold individually (Like 2 euros each I think?) and have a few different ponies than the US BBs which are all sold in one big box only at Toy R US (Also $25 for 12 ponies) (edit: see update!).

I was able to find a 4-pack of the new plastic-haired ponies with Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity and Pinkie Pie -- they look pretty good, and are in stock on Amazon right now. The older models with actual hair manes always looked a bit... creepy to me. Princess Celestia is the only one that pulls it off and looks like the new show. Of course, there's also that 4-pack of the new plastic-haired ponies with a strange-looking Spike, Celestia, Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack that everyone knows about. Poor Fluttershy, left out in the cold again.
Yes, Shopkins are very popular. How old is she? I would probably buy the actual Shopkins toy. Or a toy pack and a blanket or something? There's tons of different Shopkins so the packs don't always match. Here's some good links. Hope this helps!

The first toy (well, toys) I got was the gift set: it was (and still is, I think) the most accurate thing you can find, with the blindbag ponies. The only issue is that Celestia is pink, but there's no version of her in her show-accurate color available as of yet, unfortunately...
As for how I explain it to my family...They know I'm a fan of the show, and they understand that it's a good show. It's not much different than the other figurines I have from video games and other shows I enjoy.
 
As for an official Luna toy, there is one, even as a duo with Celestia, but, er...See for yourself.

Thank you! The Pascal is from this set, and I sewed him on (instead of gluing) so I can take him off later and return him to the set if my daughter ever has an interest in playing with it (she's only two now).
This is true. We've witnessed a wonderful linguistic event: utilizing the word "barn," which connotes animals, dirt, work, and hay (and smells which would be problematic) to actually mean "Barbie Sister's Pony Stable Playset."

Here's Teresa modeling the 2008 I Can Be Space Camp version. A bit more pink than I'd like, but this doll was designed to actually go out into pretend-space in her spacesuit, so that's cool.
Here's a newer book--"A Space Camp Adventure"--that I wasn't able to find a date for, but the cover features the contemporary brunette Skipper, who I believe was released in 2010, so it's not that old.
Here's the current astronaut fashion pack, I Can Be Astronaut. Notice how it comes sans doll and without any tie-in to the US program.
I am just making a guess, but there was probably a larger space-themed expansion planned that was never produced when news of the space program shutting down came. It makes sense with the timeline since the book probably was designed and printed just before the news broke. At least there is an astronaut outfit available in stores, but I agree with you that the 1998 doll and her outfit is fantastic.
Don't give up hope. This My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Gift Set, currently with a 4.8 rating, could become a contender if it gets more reviews.

Some random ponies come in those figure packs (example of the big pack on Amazon). I wish more relevant ones did, such as the CMC, princesses, spike, and discord. These are the only official merch (besides the DVDs of S1,2 and the movie) I have personally spent money on. I currently have this figure sitting on top of my thermostat. We have random figures of random stuff hidden around our house (Pokemon, Spiderman, Bionicles)
