98% sure you're doing keto wrong my man/lady.

I read your comments in this chain and I think I can help. Been doing keto for 3.5 years through loss, gain and maintenance.

Lmk your specific questions but I'll answer a few I saw below.

Carbs are less than half the density of fats and simple carbs digest significantly faster leaving you hungry again sooner.

Keto, for me, is a nearly binary proposition. Everyone's body is a little different but eating all of my 10g a day limit at once will make me feel starving shortly after. Whereas, while maintaining or cutting weight, I can eat just once a day at around 3pm and feel great!

The "feeding window" has been debunked. Any protien consumption within about 7 hours of your workout will be enough to spare muscle.

STRING CHEESE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! About 7g protien, 6g fat and 200mg sodium and portable (pocket cheese?) for any time I feel hungry.

Morning shake when building is 1 scoop isopure whey, an ice cube, some electrolytes and a cup of heavy whipping cream (800 cals from fat).

Electrolytes are huge on this diet. I'm 190lbs at 6'2" and powerlifting has me taking about 8grams throughout the day with plenty of fluids. Magnesium (chelated so you can absorb it), potassium, zinc and a few much more micronutrients are a must with sodium being king.

Sugar is poisonous. Not only literally but it keeps your taste buds used to such an extreme standard that only candies seem sweet. To me, broccoli is sweet. Sugar is also addictive and processed sugar will yo-yo your endocrine levels like crazy throughout the day leaving you exhausted. Cutting them out had me forcing myself to sleep because I just wasn't tired.


Hunger: after 2 weeks I forgot what that felt like exactly... I don't get the sharp pain or start feeling light headed. I just realized I hadn't eaten and it was rolling on towards 4pm. You CANNOT eat sugars and simple carbs and get this benefit in the same way you cannot do just a little bit of (insert addictive drug here for the pedantic).

Other benefits you may or may not see:

  1. Rearranging of how fat is stored on your body. I went from a gut to year around abs without losing a significant body fat percentage.

  2. Warmer extremities (possibly related to number 1): I used to have very cold fingers and toes. They are still cold but now it doesn't feel cold to me. Idk why really.

  3. I'm not tied to my next freaking meal: I'm not CONSTANTLY thinking about when and where I'll eat next. I learned to cook delicious food I enjoy every time (and have ready in advance), and food cost dropped from $25 a day (I know) to about $4 a day while eating nearly double the calories.

  4. No noticable loss in performance: I was worried my lifting would suffer without carbs but that has absolutely not been the case. I was a 20 mile a day cardio athlete and I just pulled a 405 DL for 2 a few days before Christmas. Added 15lbs a week to that lift only going 3x a week. Those are beginner gains numbers but I'm no beginner.

    As many have said, the best diet is one you stick to and make into a new way of life. I make my food fun and tasty. I don't ever eat chicken breast and broccoli if I can help it. I eat pork, steak, eggs (all of them) and fish in descending order of quantity.

    The only major drawback I've found is how hard everyone tries to feed me pizza and sweets every chance they get... also when bulking, fitting 4500 calories into your body without carbs is stupid hard... AND electrolytes. If they aren't right, everything falls apart.

    I use this stuff in a 20oz water bottle right now but the last few sips are vile vs. Barely tasting the first 75% of the drink regardless of shaking... but it works so well I'm gonna put it in a capsule and take one every 5 hours or so.

    Blood test numbers look fantastic. You don't need a single carb to survive and thrive.

Definitely get a bib, not shorts. I hate the elastic in shorts, and bibs also don't shift around on you. I am a big fan of Voler and they also have some of their items on sale on their website right now.

You didn't specify which kind of pump you have. If you don't have a floor pump; get one. You will always want to top off your tires before you go out. There is a lot of debate on pumps, but I love my Joe Blow Sport.

Don't get a camelbak. I am in love with my camelbak for hiking, skiing, hunting, etc. but hate it for road cycling. It is uncomfortable in the road cycling position. I'm no expert, but it also seems to generate a lot more drag, which will slow you down. Get bottles instead.

I'm a huge fan of 24 oz Polar Bottle. They are cheap and keep your drinks pretty cold.

I would also recommend a quality energy drink if you are going on long rides (4+ hrs). I love Cytomax Tropical Fruit. Buy super cheap bottles if you are using energy powder, because they are hard to clean and get kinda gross after a while. Before I started using a good energy drink, I would tend to bonk out after 4-ish hours. Switching to an energy drink helped me keep going on longer rides.

If you bought all of these things, you would be just shy of $200. Things I'd consider but don't think are absolutely necessary are: gloves and a good jersey. Also a bike computer, but a lot of people are just using Strava on their phones. You can also buy another bib in case you want to ride multiple days in a row.

Corn, Caesin and Soy can also cause 'major' brain fog.

It's unfortunately not just about the gluten. I'm one of those people I believe. It seems whenever I have Corn I get a 'mild' brain fog in comparison to my gluten brain fog. I've read somewhere that others say their corn response was like a milder glutening.

I probably have a Caesin brain fog problem too, but I refuse to test it and avoiding dairy has been very easy for me. I've been solid dairy free for 5 months. Gluten free 5 months too, but with lots of accidents along the way. Corn free for only 2 weeks, and its only now that my mind is finally getting REALLY clear. I can't even describe it :-)

You could go 'hard core' like I did, I dropped Gluten, Caesin, and Soy all at once, then when I realized Corn was messing with me, I dropped that too.

The clarity of mind as reward is all I need to never look at those foods again. I think if you get some of this reward, you'll easily see it this way too :-) (If not already).

Also, for breakfast, every day, last 5 months.

Hey there!

I am looking to start Keto to try and shed a little of the weight I have gained from being in a relationship and I have 4 questions about it.

First- are protein shakes acceptable on Keto if they have few carbs? Without looking, I believe the protein shake I drink daily is 2 carbs and I do it with a cup of unsweetened almond milk.

Second- I believe I read diet sodas are acceptable on Keto but I wanted to make sure. Diet Dr.Pepper is my vice and I drink 1 bottle a day of it.

Third- I’m sure your run of the mill energy drinks are off the table, but I do drink something call GFuel as a pre work out and I would love too know if that is something I need to stop. Here is the Amazon link. the nutrition info is the second picture.

Lastly- with starting this new diet, I am looking to do the 8/16 fasting approach where you only consume calories 8 hours of the day. I have never done something like this before and I would love some feedback on whether or not people have had some levels of success with it and the times that people usually eat. I was think doing 10 am-6 pm because that would give me enough time to get home from work and warm up one of my meal preps but I do sleep 9 pm - 5 am every night and I am worried that 3 hours is too short of a time between my last meal and sleep.


I’m new to the community but you guys seem so warm and welcoming and I am excited to take my health to the next level!

I swear by a product called hydrolyte (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KCFQF2L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Wm9zDb8ATW62Y). Good mix of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and taurine. You could remake this stuff on your own. In addition, eating a 50/50 mix between whole foods like fruit, granola bars, but bars, and gel like foods and candy has served me well. I don't buy the beer thing. I have found that a 2 regular coca cola throughout the day can also be helpful.

I agree, don't burn matches early on anything really. I am not an expert, but have been through some of the most gruelling athletic as an ex college athlete and the mental aspect cannot be overlooked. It's a test of will after everything is all said and done. If you're having fun and in a good mood the day will probably go well.

Your rate and times are irrelevant for your first two weeks. After that it escalates on a weekly basis until you hit learning curve 5. AFAIK you’re supposed to be able to do 275 uph with takt time under 12 at the end of week three. Week 4 jumps up to 360 and takt time in 9s. Week 5 is when 400 and 8.5 takt or better matters for pickers in an AR FC. What really matter is your expected productivity percent. Basically that is the number you have to be over 90% of to avoid a write up after second week, and you need to have over 100 if you want to be assigned to secondary support roles.

As for soreness a few things can help. First and foremost get Powerstep Pinnacle Maxx Full Length Orthotic Shoe Insoles, Burgandy insoles (the red ones) for your shoes. Your feet and subsequently the rest of your body will thank you. Get a pair of SB SOX Compression Knee Brace (I use a pair old of socks with the toes cut out) and use a Solimo (Amazon cheap brand) knee brace because together they will save your knees wear and tear. Also get the Mueller wrap around elbow braces, which will help save you a lot of pain and suffering now and years down the road. Get a lifting belt/brace/back support and use it every other shift. Staying hydrated isn’t enough as a picker. Get yourself a 32 oz Insulated Kleen Kanteen. Fill it one quarter to one third with ice and use a combination of Cytomax drink powder at two scoops to one scoop of Bodybuilding.com Signature BCAA and bring three premixed containers of powder mix in the right ratios.Rubbermaid makes small plastic containers that I use, so you can refill the kanteen at each break. I keep a spare mix container in a mesh bag with a cliff bar or an apple and some small hard candies, which I attach via carabiner to my water-bottle going in and out that during work is attached to fence directly above water bottle holder. This drink will keep you hydrated, fueled, maintain electrolytes, and provide amino acids to prevent excessive muscular breakdown. Make sure you eat a tons of protein at each meal, including packing healthy lunches with lots of protein and possibly even include a protein shake/smoothies in an insulated container for lunchtime. Nutrition is key to fast recovery from the intense physical MMA prep workout they put us through.

Don’t be afraid to take restroom breaks right smack in the middle of your quarters, seriously. With regards to pod gaps, tote conveyor jams, and other issues out of a picker’s control it is helpful to keep a small notebook to log those things down and show it to your PA/AM/OpsM to have your time adjusted for those issues, which then adjusts your expected productivity percentage.

Ideally you want to stay right around 95% productivity by the time week 4 ends and you’re transfer eligible. If you do too good, then greedy af bonus hungry AMs will do everything possible to keep you as a picker. One woman I know has been a picker at my FC for two years. She hits 600. UPH with TAKT times that are in the 3/s-5/s range no problem, and she has been stuck picking and not given secondary roles because she is just that good at the job.

That's awesome. Good luck! When is the race? I would recommend still using carbs during the race. The train-low-race-high approach seems to work for the triathletes that I know. You’re good but I definitely would not skip the electrolytes. They’re soooo important for function i cannot stress that enough. I use Hydrolyte for all my fasts (0 cals or additives and pure electrolytes) and I feel incredible on it.

Sure :) If your concerned about it I would recommend that you take extra care of your face (moisturize to keep it elastic and do regular face exercises) as well as your body (sports drinks like this which help muscles repair, supplements, rotating toning excercises, and eating right will assist the body in going back to place). It's easier to avoid signs in the face when you lose weight and build muscle over a long period of time (year+ rather than months) so the body can rest and heal at it's own pace. Eat This Much tends to get posted in these threads, so take a look there for your consumption requirements. Based on this magic metabolism of yours you might want to increase the calorie intake to be higher than what you think you need.

If you run into the underconsumption problem you can always go for a Weight Gainer if you really feel you cannot consume the required calories through food. If you want healthy, cheap, and high fat food then buy some avocados. You should be able to get them for $1 or less each.

I assume you meant you took creatine based supplements at some point. Just buy some creatine monohydrate and avoid trying to get the creatine from some other supplement. The thing about creatine is you need to stay well hydrated, so drink a shitload more water than you do now. Also, if you do not put on water weight within a couple days of loading then creatine may not work for you. I don't remember what it is called, but some people are immune (not the right word) to the effects.

Lastly, you can pick up some Size On which isn't cheap, but has great results with some people. If you plan to spend $45 on a month supply you better work out hard and long to get your money's worth.

There are a few cheap electrolyte mix options out there that you could look into, I've tried this one and liked it, tasted pleasant. It doesn't have any sodium so you may want to grab some sodium bicarbonate to throw in.

Nuun isn't terrible either, lesser amounts of everything but has some sodium, couple of the flavors are pretty good.

As mentioned taurine helps, it's also dirt cheap at bulk powder sites.

Lastly, watch how much you take at once and the speed with which you drink it. Keep the doses sane and you'll be fine.

If you do go the low carb route I'd highly recommend KetoCaNa for long runs. I've done 18 hour fasts and done 90 minute hard interval sessions before using this.

Also UCAN can be really useful for races/long runs too. I would definitely test this out though because it can cause GI distress if you overdo it/aren't used to it.

I would say that for most of your easy runs, you could be Keto and do well. I personally prefer a more cyclic ketogenic approach where I do carb re-feeds post workout.

When you increase volume, frequency, and especially intensity most people are going to perform better on a higher CHO intake. If you're never running more than once a day though, and most of your runs are easy you might be able to do keto all the time.

Was just about to say this. How's your Magnesium, your Potassium? Sodium is also important, but people often forget about good old Mg and K. I've done keto on and off for a little more than 4 years, and find that adding electrolyte supplements helps a LOT.

I now buy NuuN tablets off Amazon and drop two into my 32 oz water bottle each day. It's super helpful.

The downside of it is you need access to a blender (which you would need anyway) and frozen/fresh fruit. I usually made mine with almond milk, greek yogurt, and/or coffee and a dab of peanut butter or raw egg to increase the protein. I used to eat it for evening meal and it was all I needed. With the addition of PB and any fruit it was very filling.

To break it down like sort of like @modnar42, it's about $2-3 per 100 calories, so still way better than 310, not as good as Soylent or DIY.

Water water is actually absorbed faster by your body, it wont help decrease it, but if you're taking a sip every 5-10 minutes you should be fine. 1 bottle/hour maybe even 1.5/hr if its really hot.

Also try a hydration powder, GU/Nuun/Gatorade something that adds electrolytes and potassium. If helps your body absorb the water better and make it more efficient.

I usually do one bottle with a tablet and one bottle of pure water. The gatorade one comes in individual packets if you go on long enough ride to refill your water. Take turns sipping from both. They usually leave a residue in the bottle so you should always use the same bottle with the powder.

I agree that for doing 48s you don't really need electrolyte supplements, but it certainly won't hurt you.

I make my own snake juice (1 quart water, 1 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp KCL powder, 1/4 tsp food grade epsom salt, and 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper for flavor and because it's good for you.), and sip it throughout the day. For my next fast I will add 1/4 tsp pink salt as I don't think I was getting enough sodium.

Body Armor makes water with electrolytes. Gatorade and the rest all have low sugar versions. Pedialyte is definitely the best I have tried though.

Edit: This post reminded me I've been looking for an electrolyte powder (not necessarily for hangocers). I found this, Vitalyte, supposed to be low sugar and work well so I might try it.

Seriously, people joke about adding even caffeine to a workout regimen. I took half a scoop of Vintage pre-workout powder and stupidly started to workout without waiting the time it says to wait. Only real stimulant in that is caffeine. Started trying to do cardio workout and my heart went crazy, skipping beats, and it wouldnt go back into rhythm. I started coughing, getting lightheaded, sweating, went on for a good 30 minutes before it calmed down. Scared the shit out of me. And im not obese, im moderately fit at this point. Giving stimulants to people with such a lackadaisical attitude is very dangerous. I'd want to punch Bob Harper in the fucking kidney.

I was having a similar issue. During a whoosh I found that my body flushed a lot of electrolytes. I bought this stuff and it seems to do the trick, but the downside is that it doesn't really taste all that good. A good friend of mine who is also on keto uses these which taste a hell of a lot better, but I prefer the no additive stuff.

Besides what the other guys are saying I would also suggest a sport drink like cytomax (http://www.amazon.com/CytoSport-Cytomax-Sport-Energy-Citrus/dp/B000G72384) which will help with the lactic acid build up and give you a mild boost. I mix up a batch and take it on the ice, you'll want to get a bottle with a straw so you don't spray this crap all over you, but it makes a huge difference.

Most aren’t very expensive. Really it comes out to an extra $10-15/month vs making your own. To me, that’s worth the hassle of formulating my own mix. And I enjoy the taste.
Personally, C4 doesn’t do much for me vs just caffeine pills and creatine. The Old School Labs Vintage Blast pre work out is worth the money for me, and it doesn’t have most of the artificial crap many other pre workouts have.

The main idea with the snake diet is maximizing the time you fast for the health benefits, it just happens that most people are overweight so weightloss is a top priority as well. The snake diet at its core is basically fasting as long as you can as frequently as possible, which for lean people usually works out to being OMAD + a 48 hour fast on the weekends sometimes.

Any salt intake is really just about hitting the recommended daily amount. With doing OMAD it's not really necessary to drink snake juice as long as your getting your necessary intake of potassium / sodium / magnesium. For example Cole did a month of no water or snake juice eating bacon and cucumbers.

For people who fast longer, one of the main reasons to use snake juice is that electrolyte deficiencies are pretty dang dangerous. Water fasting without potassium and sodium can be fatal largely due to a potassium deficiency causing heartbeat problems. That and you just kinda feel crappy without the electrolytes.
