Unless Patagonia is sponsoring your hike, I would ditch the trucker hat for a boonie hat. The boonie hat offers (1) more protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays versus a baseball cap, (2) you can soak it in a stream and the evaporation will help keep your head cool on those hot days, (3) makes a bug net much more effective (something else you should definately consider, unless it is there and I just dont see it) by keeping the mesh and mosquitos/flies away from your skin.

Tru-Spec makes really nice ones and they are pretty cheap, $15 for a really quality one.

The problem for really crazy campers - they likely already own all the gear. It's very possible you'll end up buying a lower quality or inferior item compared to what they already have / want. This is common for buying an item for any hobby, when you are going in blind.

It really is best if you could get some info from your friend about what they want / need. A category like - I need a new cook set, or I have been looking for a great hat. Something to narrow it down. Otherwise this stab in the dark is likely to miss the mark.

  There are some great versions of these items, but the vast majority advertised online are terrible. If you get from this list, do some serious research to avoid the bogus affiliate marking lies.

I own a pool business so I'm outside all the time. I bought hat this last week and it's amazing. Keeps my head cool and the sun off of my face, neck, and shoulders. I'm incredibly white so I need all the help hiding from the sun I can get.

Get a bucket hat, no joke, I got this one and it saved me from sun-burn, but it's breathable so you won't get too hot, and does great to double as a cover for your face if you want to take a nap outside.

It’s not a high quality item, but it should work to block the sun and hits that “fuck it” level of spousal embarrassment.

Mine literally came in today. I have my wifes work picnic on Wednesday so I am set.

Quality wise, it definitely feel cheaper than I had hoped. The springs in the clasps are pretty weak and the cording and nylon feel cheap.

I want a fuckit hat, but for now, this will do and eventually the stars will align and I will get the real thing

It used to be my Yankees cap, but now that I'm in Florida it's my sun hat. I cut the string off because it was annoying, but I always get compliments on it.

Also, I love Woods of Windsor stuff and switch between lily of the valley and rose (soap and cologne). Since I'm usually in jeans and t-shirts it reminds me that I'm a chick. :D

I've worn this hat for a couple of ultras in the sun. Very comfortable and well ventilated. Keeps all sun off the face, ears, and neck.

Well I think the generic term for this type of hat is "10 Gallon Hat". That one looks exaggerated and with waist belts around it instead of rope.

It weighs 9.0 oz and costs $13. It has 7 panels and is about 36" in diameter. The odd number of panels means it doesn't really have inner and outer diameter.

One can stick a trekking pole up the inside center if one needed a shaft. Otherwise, the factory head harness needs the padding of a sock or a head sweatband to make it comfortable.
