Have experimented with a couple, but here's what I've found:

Walking

At the start of the day (if still tired after waking and drinking a full glass of water) or after lunch a walk helped me reset and regain focus. Even if I had been dealing with stressful issues, getting out of my environment, paired with mild exercise, was enough to get me over the hump for the rest of the day. Going to a natural area was the most helpful, and a duration of about 15-20 minutes I found was ideal to gain the benefits without feeling like I was falling behind on the days tasks.

Standing

I'd noticed a trend where my focus was drifting after lunch and thought a standing desk might help. Picked up a MultiTable (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NJUQVG/) with my cheap-o Ikea desk top. Tried to enforce a schedule where I'd stand after lunch but got distracted with leg/foot tenderness. Picked up a fatigue mat (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V3TO9EK/) that helped a bit.

Standing does seem to help a bit, the shift in position does work to wake up and regain a bit of focus. But not as effective as movement exercises I've found, or especially going outside and getting fresh air.

Stopped Heavy Weight Training

A few times a week (ranged from 3-5 times per week) I'd go to the gym for weight training. I'd been doing a pretty intense program with regular heavy lifts and I was pretty unproductive on workout days. No matter what I ate, how rested I was, I would return from the gym and not be able to truly focus until after lunch. By then I was feeling rushed to get things done.

I scaled things back to workouts that took effort, but without pushing myself to my limits each time. Also cutting back weight training to 3 times per week max. Others may have better luck with lifting, I just found I couldn't maintain that level of effort and expect quality productivity for a few hours.

Running

Recently I've started running as an experiment using http://www.active.com/mobile/couch-to-5k-app

I was never a runner, but it seemed a nice portable way to get some exercise so thought I'd at least give it a shot. I've been impressed with the impacts thus far. On non-weight training days I run in the morning and the productivity boost carries through the entire day, even into subsequent days. I'm not sure if it's the running itself, or the progressive structure of C25K that makes me feel I'm achieving something each workout, or some combination of both - but since starting running I've felt alert and focused throughout the week.

I'll have to see long term how this work, but so far been on it for 6 weeks now and benefits started around week 2.

This is my shelf that holds my laptop - might only work well in a setup where you're in a corner like I am - http://amzn.to/2frgGQU.
Amazon Basics wall arm is great, but you can use whatever - http://amzn.to/2frfa0V.
I use this to keep power bricks, etc out of sight - http://amzn.to/2ed49k6.
I put this little led strip behind my monitor - it's powered by USB and I have it plugged into my monitor so it is on when my monitor is on - http://amzn.to/2fIhguL.
Mousepad, i like the Razer Sphex for this, just because it's so thin - http://amzn.to/2eCmPbs - but it isn't the best pad for gaming, etc.

You'll want to put your desk top height so that when standing on the mat in whatever you're gonna use (I just wear socks) when your arms are at your side, your elbows form a 90 degree angle to go onto your keyboard/mouse. Your monitor should be at a height where your eyes are inline with about 2/3 up your screen (1/3 of your screen is above your eyes.)

I also put the shelf so that the laptop is below my monitor in case I want to pull my monitor out from the wall - however 99.9% of the time I find that I just have my monitor pushed back as close to the wall as it goes.

When mounting the desk to the wall, you'll want to try to put the center part into a stud, and use some decently burly drywall anchors for the rest. You'll find you may inadvertently lean on the desk and things like that, so you want it to be pretty solid.

Good morning /u/DaOpa!

I have a motorized BEKANT desk from IKEA (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49022538/, very similar but it doesn't show the actual controls to move the desk up and down in the pictures). I absolutely love the desk. While it's a complete desk replacement and not a piece that sits on top, it might not be an option for everyone. The desk itself has a net under for some cable management. If you plan on doing this, you might want to look at longer cables to ensure that there is no tension on any of your devices in any position.

If you're wanting a standing desk for ergonomics, ensure that the height will work for you with your arms around a 90 degree angle. You don't want to be slouching or leaning over constantly as it's going to defeat the purpose. I still find myself doing it from time to time though. Another option to consider is also the height of your monitor, as looking up or down for too long will strain your neck.

If you're standing for a long period of time, I'd recommend a Standing Desk Mat. This should help your back for those longer playing sessions. If you have a green screen, consider the height of the green screen, how tall you are, and how far away your camera will be. This might be a deciding factor on if you actually play standing up or not, as for me my Elgato Green Screen was too far back and I had little room to crop the top of the webcam without clipping my head.

I get shoulder pain and for me working on a standing desk really helps. If you can't get a fancy standing desk (I'm lucky that work has them for everyone), then you can do a DIY thing. At home I don't have a standing desk, but I put my monitor on a bunch of old cardbord boxes and boxes. The keyboard and mouse I put on put ontop of something like this https://www.amazon.com/Sofia-Sam-Tasking-Supports-Laptops/dp/B015X48RHA/ . So basically it's a makeshift standing desk and it works great.

I also use an Anti-Fatigue Mat as it helps with standing for hours on end. Though I found one at costco for $15 which was a good deal. It's meant for the kitchen , but it works.

Also I follow the Pomodoro Technique of working. Every 25 minutes I take a 5 minute break and go for a walk outside. I hear a lot of programmers complain that it breaks the flow, but for me I find it to be a nice moment to relax and helps gather my thoughts. Sometimes we get stuck in a rut, stepping away and allowing the mind to relax really helps. It also helps with pain by getting a little bit of movement.

  • Fatigue Mat - A good mat & posture vital for standing desk success. Get a good one. This is the one i have. Balance Boards, and Fancy ones with contours are a waste of money. I exclusively do a standing desk at both work and home, and have done that for several years now.
  • Headphones - I invested in a good pair of headphones. I have the Bose noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones which are quite expensive.
    • Music Subscription - Also for managing distractions. I don't usually like listing to music for extended periods, but it's better than listing to my coworkers for the same period.
  • Keyboard, mouse - this is a personal preference in terms of which you get.
  • Nice Monitor - Expensive, but I don't have to beg for a nice monitor each time I switch companies.
  • Insulated Tumber - For Coffee/Tea
  • Me - I'm at my desk .... occasionally.

    Given you spend about 2000 hours at your desk per year, IMO it's absolutely worthwhile to invest in your own comfort, even if your employer won't do that for you.

I have a standing desk, and I require deep thought for work.

My desk is a sit-stand model. Push a button and it lowers; push another and it rises. That's the key. I couldn't stand ALL day. What's been so helpful for me is the ability to CHANGE positions. I stand a few hours, sit a few hours. When I flag, I just switch.

Also critical was a gel pad for my feet. Gel Pad I actually like the edges dropping off - I can stretch my calves and lean into my desk. Doing a nice calve stretch/core exercise as I type.

I really like combining music (without words) with standing. Something like Riverdance/Lord of the Dance (I know, I know, but it WORKS) with standing really gets things flowing. For DEEP concentration I want silence, but for getting all the stuff in my head already OUT into type? Standing, fidgeting, half-dancing has been GREAT. And when that ends, I sit. I like my balance ball, but sometimes sit in a chair.

If your legs and back are fatigued, I really really recommend a good thick gel mat. Makes a HUGE difference. I like being barefoot on mine, but I WFH where that's not an issue. If you work in an office, you need really really REALLY good shoes to be standing. (Or socks with no holes, and stand on the gel mat in your socks!). And if you have a back problem, maybe standing isn't for you.

If you have a stand-only desk, that's brutal. You should be able to switch positions, sitting and standing, depending on what you need at what time of day. It's made me much much more productive.

May I recommend something that will help you keep your (what appears to be tiny) kitchen clean? Get yourself a bar mat. It will help catch loose beans/grinds and keep them from getting scattered all over your kitchen. Also if you spill water or what ever it will all stay contained. I got mine from a place I used to work (says Barcardi and Coke on it) Make friends with a bar tender, or spend the 10 bucks now and enjoy your clean kitchen. Also makes it look like you know what you're doing. Seriously, a bar mat is the way to go.

That and a Chemex should be your next purchase.

I think the best gift I ever got my husband was a WellnessMat anti-fatigue kitchen mat. It has been more than worth the money. We've had it for 6 years now and it still looks and feels brand new. I always feel other anti-fatigue mats when I see them, and none hold a candle to this one. It's super thick. You can't feel the floor below it at all. Definitely recommend this for anyone who spends time in the kitchen.

I bought this bar mat (https://www.amazon.com/Update-International-BSM-1218BK-Rubber-Service/dp/B000MVI4ZK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1482638096&sr=8-3&keywords=bar+mat) a while back and my grinder and machine (I have a Gaggia Classic) fit on it perfectly with a little room to spare. It has little pokey things (whatever you want to call it) that will trap stray water and grounds. It's really easy to move the machines+grinder and knock everything in the mat into the garbage and throw into the dishwasher to clean. Highly recommend!

I have a gel anti fatigue floor mat in my kitchen that my two sammies love to lay on, more than the fabric beds I have.

They like it so much that I just bought a smaller one from Amazon just for them. It's 20" x 36", obviously cool to them (I have tile floors and they prefer the mat), and is $36 which is a great price for a dog bed!

Plus, if yours doesn't like it for any reason then you can put it in front of your sink like I have my original one that they both covet now (72" long).

I've been working at home for the past 8 years. I'm in a similar situation as you where I end up spending 10 to 14 hours in front of a computer per day. I was having lower back pain as well. What relieved the issue was switching to a standing desk. I've been using it entirely for the past 11 months (got it setup in January). It's made a world of difference. It took about 2 months to get use to but after that there's no looking back. At first you'll get some foot fatigue from standing so many hours. Get a comfortable running shoe with tons of foot support or/and a standing mat. I got a cheap standing desk setup from amazon for about $30 and the mat for the same price. No need to spend hundreds of dollars setting up one.

For exercise, I'd focus on ones that strengthen the lower back. Your lower back is weak from all that sitting and it's this weakness that's making it feel tight and unconfortable. Throw some supermans into your routine. They gently work the lower back.

Also, I find regular theraputic massages helped a lot. If you can afford one, I recommend heading to a good one that'll take care of your upper body. They provided with lots of relief.

As fun as they are, some people may not want to carry coinage. It's heavy and not as easy to fish out of the front of your corset if you're not wearing a purse/pouch.

Don't forget to drink a lot of water, wear SPF 1billion, and comfortable, well broken in shoes even if they're not 100% period perfect. Getting one of those anti-fatigue kitchen mats. (Like so http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EEG2UK4?psc=1) can really help too if you're standing for a long time.

I am 5'10" and have a cube corner 48. I usually don't need to raise it up all the way to be comfortable. It has catches every 2" or so for maximum adjustment.

I would suggest:
-Monitor arms (clamp style) so that you can get back some real estate (
-A good standing mat

I bike and inline skate regularly so the muscles around my knees have no problems. One I thing I suggest with a standing desk is to get a really good anti-fatigue mat. I had a thinner one before and my foot bones (I stand in my socks with no shoes) used to hurt after a few hours of standing. I bought a GelPro Plush, and now I don't have any issues at all: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006LG13VC/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The GelPro Plush is pricey, but it was worth it for standing 8 hours a day. Standing in socks is great for rolling stuff underneath your feet to massage your soles if you have plantar fasciitis.

One of the little things I bought that made things a lot more pleasant for me was a bar mat like this

It's big enough to hold my scale, grinder, and room to operate an Aeropress. Catches the coffee dust that always escapes the grinder somehow and minor spills. Once a week I dunk it in the sink, scrub it with a brush, and air dry it.

Ah true. When I first got a standing desk I couldn't last 10 minutes in any shoes with a heel. I switched to some of those cheap flat dress looking shoes.

I'm not sure how effective these standing mats are but they could be worth a try.

Wear Shoes and use an Anti fatigue mat. This greatly helps your feet. It also gives you a point to re center yourself into your hitbox.

A simple gear tie can completely get rid of the weight of the cable from your head and if you bend the ends in towards your waist a little it holds the wire off your back you don't even know its there. Don't forget Cable is tied to you when you take the headset off.

It has served me well in keeping my coffee space tidy. Electric kettle sits to one side of it, digital scale sits on the other side. Lido manual grinder and bag of beans sits on top of it. Its convenient as a catch tray for brushing out the grinder and grinds jar above after brewing. I empty and wash it every so often if there is much accumulation, but that takes awhile. Importantly though, I no longer have to deal with cleaning up stray coffee grounds every day!

I sit at a desk, kinda at a typist's position, so my elbows form a 90 degree angle to the top of the stone.

Under my stones, I use a bartender's mat, and find it really handy. Keeps the stone in place, and keeps spills to a minimum.

I keep a little dish of water to my right so I can dip my fingers in the bowl and spread it on the stone.

I tend to take lots of breaks, and use Japanese strokes for the bulk of the sharpening, and finish with a variety of x strokes.

I have a Gorilla Grip mat that is very comfortable and spongy to stand on. I was sick of sitting all day and found that standing helped increase blood flow, focus, and kept me more alert. When I get tired, I sit for a while. I've known three people who have dealt with blood clots due to inactivity (which can kill you), and as I'm very sedentary myself, I'd rather avoid all that.
