Well if you want to just play chords for singalong of specific songs, try googling the title and "lead sheet." Sometimes you can get lucky and find a decent one for free. Otherwise you can search the title and "chords" and you'll usually end up on ultimate guitar. The chords can be very close, but can sometimes be suspect as they are being simplified for guitarists for guitarists at times.

Though, that might be close enough for you and the simplification might actually make it easier.

From there you can look around on youtube for simple comping patterns and combine that with some basic chord spelling knowledge and maybe noodle yourself up to a basic proficiency to just play the chords while she and you sing or something.

I honestly generally just recommend guitar for this to a lot of people because it's very easy to learn to just start strumming the 4-6 chords you need to play most pop songs in like a month. On guitar you basically just memorize a few hand shapes and get good at moving between them. You don't have to have any idea how to spell the chords. You don't need to know what notes are on which string. You don't have to create a composite rhythm between two hands as your strumming hand has one job and the fretting hand has the other. It's also just more naturally rhythmic.

Meanwhile, on piano, the barrier to entry to be at the level of a near beginner hobbyist guitarist is just insane. You do have to be able to spell the chords and rather than one shape, there are dozens are potential ways to voice them. Context matters more and moving between chords won't be one shape to another shape but could be any number of voicings of one chord to any number of voicings of the next chord.

Creating rhythm requires interplay between the two hands and the voicing is wrapped up in that too.

This is all a very great disappointment to guitarists who want to pick up piano an expect it to be similar to guitar.

I totally understand that as an adult with responsibilities you probably don't want to add an instrument, but just in case you're curious, here is an absolutely passable, cheap entry level acoustic. And guitar is pretty easily self taught by looking almost anywhere on Youtube or the internet for beginner chords or whatever.

I've only been playing for about a year (started with an electric) but have gotten pretty decent with self-teaching. If you search around for "free guitar lessons" in google you'll find plenty of results (About.com has a decent one). There are also a lot of youtube lessons and a book with CD might be helpful if you want to learn how to read music.

I'd recommend going acoustic first if you're unsure whether you want to stick with it. I sprung for an OK first guitar (electric) and a decent amp since I knew I really wanted to learn. I've heard that electric is a little easier to learn but who knows if that's true.

I'm getting this one, but this other one would be good for jazz.

I'm a rock and metal player, but I have dabbled in jazz. An Epiphone Dot is the perfect place to start. Granted it's not the cheapest, but it'll last you a very long time and it sounds fantastic. Other than that, a Squier Telecaster is great choice because they're so versatile.

In terms of amps, Fender is almost certainly your best bet if you're looking for beautiful cleans. Fender amps range from practice to recording to full-on gigging amps, so there'a bound to be one for you. Until then though, a Vox amPlug or a Marshall mini stack would be a great way to kick start your guitar playing.

Mostly, I really like to build and fix stuff. I don't really care whether it's the HTML of a website or the stem of a shower faucet -- it's just the act of figuring something out and making it better that I like, for whatever reason.

I have a small collection of tools -- a power drill, some gardening stuff, etc. I also have a bass guitar, but I bought one of these itty-bitty little headphone amps so I don't piss off the roomies and also so I don't have to lug an amp around everywhere -- since they're pretty much just an empty box with a speaker in it anyway.

I also like reading, but (partially thanks to Reddit, I'm sure) my attention span is so short that sitting down and reading is tough, so I've gotten rid of pretty much all of my books and opted instead for audiobooks. There are great sites like librivox.org where you can download oodles of classics read aloud for free. Currently I'm listening to all 65 hours of 'Atlas Shrugged' while I fold Noteboards, a product I created and sell (also thanks to Reddit). Also, nothing beats the time I drove across the country by myself listening to 'The Godfather' and 'Fight Club' and zooming through the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Death Valley.

Singing is also really fun, and takes zero space. When I'm not listening to audiobooks, I'm singing along to musicals ('Book of Mormon' today) or 90s rock.

The stuff that takes up the most room is my push-reel lawn mower which is easy to disassemble, and my healthy collection of Nerf guns.

EDIT: I also do some graphic design. This graphics tablet is tiny and flexible, and works great.

In short: there are better guitars our there for 100 bucks. The Rogue isn't the worst guitar out there for the price, but they're sure as hell far from best. It looks like others in this thread have already mentioned Fenders and Jasmines, which are far superior.

This one is 14 bucks cheaper and will out perform and outlast the Rogue. I have one myself as a beater guitar and it's great. The satin finish lets it ring and the neck is really comfy.

Here's a Fender FA-100. It's a great starter guitar that sounds even better with a decent set of strings. IF you can spend a bit more, bet a Fender DG-8 instead. Otherwise, this will do fine.

Epiphone makes a few good ones too, but Fender and Jasmine tend to outperform them. Avoid Luna (crap guitars that only look pretty), Rogue (not terrible but you can get more for you money), Mitchell (QC is awful. Have unboxed many with cracked tops, seperated fret boards, and missing parts), First Act (toys), and Ibanez (but only at this price point for Ibanez. They get way better once you go up a bit).

Don't forget to look at used stuff, either! A Used Seagull or Fender T-Bucket would be awesome finds and not too expensive.

Really, you need to visit a couple local guitar shops and play a few guitars - even the ones outside your budget. The reason being is each guitar will fit you differently - the neck shape, width, thickness, the body depth and bout width, and of course, the sound you like to hear.

If you find a more expensive guitar that you like, then that company might have a similar, more economical brand and model that will fit your budget: Gibson owns Epiphone, Godin owns Seagull, Takamine owns Jasmine, etc.

I was shopping for a travel guitar, something I could take on the plane w/o worrying too much if it got crushed. I didn't buy one, yet.

I did buy an excellent Parlor, 0-size guitar last year for $350 - The Loar LO-216-NA. It's a small body with full length neck that joins at the 12th fret. It sounds awesome and I like the smaller body - I don't feel like I have stretch to fit around it.

I recently played a 00 sized Washburn that had an awesome sound, a slim C-shaped neck that joined the body at the 14th fret for about $300. I wish I had written down the model. That'll probably be my next guitar purchase.

Hey guys, newbie here. After reading up on it I decided to get a used Yamaha Pacifica. However, I couldn't find any used 112J/112Vs in my local Guitar Center, only the entry level PAC012. I'm not too comfortable with buying used without trying the guitar hands-on, so my options right now are this:

• ~$100. Used PAC012 at local Guitar Center (played it, think it's in good condition though I don't really know what to look for)
  
• ~$200. New 112J from Amazon. I would get it from Guitar Center or the likes, but Amazon is the only seller I've found that sells the Old Violin Sunburst finish, which I like the most.
  
• ~$300. New 112V, from anywhere.
  
  I'm a broke college student, so I'd like to get the best bang for my buck. Does the upgrade from PAC012 to 112J justify a $100 increase? Or the upgrade from 112J to 112V another $100? I think I'll be getting a Roland Microcube to go with it, and play it through my headphones with a 1/4" to 3.5mm adapter.

It's a Jasmine S34C and they are about $120. I bought it for my son after reading a lot of recommendations for inexpensive, but playable acoustics for a beginner.

I love to play this guitar. It has a nice natural flat finish, and it is very comfortable. I pick it up before my other acoustics...it just feels better than my more expensive guitars.

I did hear other reviewers complain that it needed a set-up after it was shipped, but you should probably do that with any new guitar, anyway...especially for a new player.

I don't use any special equipment. Just a computer with a mic and the program Audacity which is completely free.

The guitar I use is a Takamine Jasmine which is only $80 on Amazon with free shipping. I'm sure it doesn't compare to really expensive high quality guitars, but it's certainly better than nothing!

I've got some experience with an acoustic, I'm looking to move up to electric now. No need to worry about amps, pedals, or anything like that. I have a plan. The main thing I need to worry about, obviously, is what guitar to get. I'm on a tight budget (up to $200, but you can try to convince me to $250). I'm only looking for a simple, entry-level guitar, nothing that requires the mother-of-all-amps or a studio to sound good (I'm a budget college kid :P)

The two I'm considering are the Yamaha Pacifica or the Les Paul Special-II (any other ideas for LPs?). I do want to be able to play a mix of both pop/funk and also classic rock/heavy rock, so I need something with a decent enough pickup set.

Do you have a friend you could borrow an old guitar from for a few weeks? If you are sure you are going to keep it up, it would definitely be worth spending a decent chunk on a decent guitar.


If not, then this or this would be a much better starter kit. I bought a cheap starter kit and within two months bought one of these guitar. It was such an improvement. This exact kit wasn't an option for me, but I'd definitely have gone for it if I had the choice. The epiphone one would be more suited for harder rock and metal, where as the Squier would be better for softer rock and country. That said, you can get a massive variety of sounds out of each for any style, so no need to worry.


If you do want to spend more on a nicer guitar, there are so many more options out there, but they wont come with all the little bits like guitar pics, an amplifier, cable, stand etc. It could get pretty pricey, so if you're not sure, stick to the starter kits for a while until you think you want to upgrade to something nicer. Here is an example of some stuff I picked out for someone a while back that wanted to go for a lower-mid range guitar starting out. Price could vary a little bit though. depending on the guitar.

I highly recommend Ibanez and epiphone. Jackson also has a good model at $200. Just make sure you don't get a Floyd rose. They're terrible for a beginner and a hassle for even experienced guitar players.

I just started playing the guitar and I have this guitar. It's 5 bucks above your limit but maybe someone could lend you 5 bucks for something? It's a really nice guitar for the price. To me, fingerpicking the acoustic is beautiful and it's easy to impress friends because you could pick up an acoustic anywhere and play it.

So don’t get the nylon string classical guitar. It is purpose built with its nylon strings and wide neck for classical music.

Acoustic-electrics are made to take acoustic sound and amplify it louder. An acoustic-electric still produces sound from its body like an acoustic guitar, so plugging it in won’t help make it quiet.

If you want to play acoustic, just get an acoustic. You can get a better guitar for less not spending extra on electronics you won’t use. You can play an acoustic guitar softly enough to not disturb neighbors, and if you want to play pop get a steel string guitar. Finger picking/strumming is great for pop music and can be played as softly as you like. This would be an example of a good starter Yamaha acoustic. There are some even cheaper ones too. Here’s an even more budget friendly starter pack

If you would prefer an electric guitar, they have solid bodies and produce noise though magnets called pick-ups rather than the shape of their hollow bodies via sound holes like acoustics and acoustic-electrics. An amp is required to project this sound from the pick-ups, and with a headphones you can direct all the sound to the headphones. You can technically play without an amp but it’s very quiet and doesn’t sound good. These are great starter guitars but you’ll need an amp and headphones.

You can also find cheap electric starter kits that come with amps from squire and epiphone.

Just to reiterate once more, an acoustic-electric seems like the worst choice for you because it’s sole purpose is to make the acoustic sound louder, which is the opposite of what you want. Get an acoustic or electric, but not an acoustic-electric imo.

It's a Gibson version of the 1931 Martin Dreadnought. So any Dreadnought style guitar will sound similar because dreadnought signifies a particular size and shape. How you mic an acoustic, or how you preamp it etc... will be responsible for much of the sound. No one can listen to the playback of a studio recording and differentiate between a $100 guitar and a $30,000.00 guitar. Side by side you'll notice a difference acoustically, but again, the $30k guitar will sound better only if you know it cost $30k. Guitar selection is a pseudo religious, romantic and spiritual sort of thing.

But, if you're going for someone else's sound acoustically, find out what piezo pickup that Miles guy is playing, and what preamp gear he's using. Then play some Dreadnoughts and see which one you like best.

If you get a guitar second hand, you can leave yourself enough cash to get it set up. Used guitar + pro setup is a better idea than mid-priced guitar no setup. Unless you buy a Martin, Gibson or Guild, you're likely to buy a guitar that will depreciate substantially the minute you get it home. So buy one that's a year old and pay for a tune up.

Just because you know theory fairly well doesn't mean this will be true. You may have a natural gift and pick it up fairly quickly, we won't know until you actually try. But there's a lot more the master than just the notes/chords to be labeled decent. It's a new instrument with a different mathematical construct from the ones you play.

From reading your post I assume you mean acoustic guitars exclusively. I've been playing acoustic for a very long time and I'm pretty well versed with options. I'll break it down into my personal choices in three separate price points.

• ~$100: The Squier Acoustics dominate this space. I have some pretty high end acoustic stuff, and I still find myself playing my Squier acoustic from the 80s just to mess around on. The playability is fantastic. The action is low from the factory. The sound production for $100 is incredible. There's no truss rod or complex stuff to mess around with. This is an all around pick it up, beat it up, play it whenever you want guitar. They're great.
  
  
• $200: The Yamaha FG800 is my choise for best acoustic guitar under $300. It's a powerhouse. It can do everything you want it to do and then some. Sound is astonishing for $200, it's unlike anything I've ever played at such a low price. Yamaha put out an absolutely incredible guitar with top-end quality for a bottom dollar price.
  
  
• $400: The Seagull S6. Seagull is the absolute best bang for your buck in the acoustic guitar low end market. They're wonderful, wonderful guitars and hold their value relatively well. You can go up into the $700 range of these models for Coastline series with cutaways, but if you don't care, the normal S6 does just fine.

If you want something for around $100 then look at Squier (by Fender). Basically they're poor man's Fender. I've had a couple of them, and still have one and they're very good for cheap low-end guitars.

I wouldn't get the one in your question... I've never heard of that brand, and judging by the condition of their website, I don't hold much faith for their guitars.

In a similar vein, if you can spare a few more $$$ then have a look at the Epiphone range. Epiphone are the Squier's of the Gibson world. The'yre usually a bit more expensive than Squier, but you get a bit more quality. I have an Epiphone dot guitar which is as good (if not better) than my Fender Strat, and cost less than half as much. Remember Amazon's probably not the best place to go for guitars. You will probably get some better deals elsewhere. Have a look around. I would definitely go for a well known make when it comes to budget guitars. If the name is not well known, and its cheap then its definitely not worth it. High quality less-well-known guitar makes are very expensive, so when you're looking at the low end of guitars go for something well known.

I think it was a good starting guitar, although I probably should have just started with something with humbuckers based on what I wanted to play. But I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to stick with it and it seemed like a good looking guitar for the price.

Even though I have a much nicer guitar now I still play with this one sometimes. Mine was setup pretty well and I don't have any complaints really for the price!

I had a $99 Takamine from Guitar Center and it was great, till I dropped it and broke the headstock off. It was not this one it had a pickup in the bridge. That said people seem to like these.

It rreally sounds good but the fret markings can be a pain. They are small and the 3rd fret is not marked. I played every thing guitar center had under ~$600 and this is the one I picked.

If you want a cut-away used might be better. When I buy a guitar I first make sure I like the tone and playability(action, neck thickness and width). Play Every string on every fret to make sure there is no buzz or dead spots. Good luck. You don't need to spend a lot to get a great guitar these days.

I started with this guitar about 15 years ago, and I still have it today. Squire makes some excellent guitars for the price.

The pack comes with a shitty amp, but you'll pay the same price for the pack on Amazon as you will for the guitar itself, so it at least gets you started. Once you start to get good and decide you like playing guitar, you can upgrade the amp and it will drastically improve the sound of the guitar.

Like anything with guitar, it's just a suggestion - everyone is different - but I'd say you can't go wrong with that starter pack.

Hopefully I get to replace it with a real guitar soon, I'm thinking of getting an electric, a [Yamaha Pacifica] (https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Pacifica-PAC012-Electric-Metallic/dp/B0002GZWZ0) because it's entry level and versatile ($150, twin humbuckers plus single coil), and the two styles I'm interested in are blues and grunge. At the same time I want to replace the classical with a proper acoustic, so I'm fairly torn on what to do.

My suggestion would be to save up for double that amount if you can. That would put you in the range of some decent beginner guitars. To be honest, $50 is not going to get you a lot, even in the used market. But a $50 guitar is better than no guitar, so if that's your budget and that's your plan, then you should go for it.

Based on what you've said I'm deducing that you want to start on an electric? I would not recommend going "below" a Squier Affinity series Strat, which you may be able to find used for <$100, but keep in mind that you will have to budget for a practice amp as well.

The best thing to do might be to borrow your friend's guitar if he has an extra, or let you "try" his. This way you can get a feel for the instrument, and decide if that's really something you're interested in while you do your research.

225 USD is pretty short for a guitar AND amp. If that's what you can spend then I would strongly recommend you to take the "starter packs" from Fender Squier (arround 200-250usd I guess) that include a Squier Fender guitar, a 10W amp, picks, jack...

The quality isn't too bad, and should give you a nice beginning with guitars.
You should also try some guitars in your local shop to see which one you seem more comfortable with.

Hi! I really want to pick up the bass, and I have a bit of a budget since I don't know if I'll like it. I hope this question doesn't annoy everyone, but I need to ask the generic "what bass should a beginner buy". (Although, every hobby sub gets annoyed by it and I'm guilty of hating the question as well. Feel free to point me in the right direction if the answer exists elsewhere)

I would like to keep it under $300 if possible, for bass and amp. I have a cheap Starcaster 15G amp that I know is crap, I just don't know how crappy it is. Can I use it for practice at least, or should I just buy a new one? It came with a Fender Starcaster pos guitar that I'm going to sell, hopefully I'll make $50 out of it, so I could maybe add a little bit to my budget if that's the case. I mainly would like the bass for jazz, and I would like to experiment with slap bass as well.

I have a pretty musical ear already (I play a few other instruments) and I'm afraid that an instrument at such a low price would kill me to play. What does price determine in the bass world? ie, in brass, a cheap horn will mean it will fall apart after slight use, play completely out of tune, have a terrible tone and the valves will suck. Do basses suffer the same issues? I don't think it's worth it for me to buy something I'll hate playing because of intonation or durability.

I'm currently looking at the Ibanez GSR200 Electric Bass Guitar due to price and good reviews. Does it seem like it would fit my needs?

I have this guitar. Like many others here I went aggressive while tuning and ting... string snapped. Happened after 3 months of purchasing it. After that I realized it's hard to change strings with the guitar head it has. I should have bought something with head like this one.

I'm good with A, D, E, G chords and can change between them now.

Tutorials I use are:

I agree with this. A Fender Squier Strat, (even the affinity) is a GREAT first guitar with the understanding that you are going to spend 9 months to a year learning what it is to play guitar. Then you will have a better idea of what you want and you can trade up.

Squier is like a rite of passage for many guitar players. Plus, if you decide it's not for you, you're not out more than a couple hundred bucks.

I recently bought a new guitar off amazon, after playing one at a friends place and I really liked the sound, however I've got a question about a similar model. Why does this guitar seem to have something before the final place the strings go, while the guitar I bought doesn't?

I started my brother out with a Jasmine S34C and I personally loved to play it. Very nice sounding guitar with a low price point. Nicely built and beautiful.

For me personally I would say a Fender Squier SSS or HSS depending on your taste. You can usually find for ~150 , but get the one with the trembolo.

You could also choose a squier telecaster for about the same price, but thats up to your taste in music.

If you arent a huge Fender fan an Epiphone SG might be good, but i dont have any past expierences with it

When someone ask what is a good first guitar, this is what I recommend. Yes, they are both more than $100. In my opinion no guitar under $100 is worth having. Why ? That's a good deal. There's also this alternative for less money but it's just the bass itself. But with a bass amp like the Fender Rumble 15 it still adds up to $279. But with the deal you found on the Guitar Center site, I'd say go with the one you linked. It's the same price as what I just linked but yours has a lot of extra stuff. I say go for it! This guy right here, Jasmine Takamine S35. perfect for playing just chords for a mic night, and surprisingly great sound for the price ($89!!). I got one just to carry around so I wouldn't beat up my nice Taylor. I honestly can say it plays better than some other guitars 3 times the price, if you are just using it for just chords. You will need an external pickup though, but with that extra cash you can get a decent one.

The other commenters saying to go to a music shop and play a few first are right, but a budget is a budget and I doubt you'll find one for less than $100.

That one seems to be very reasonably priced with great reviews. Metal strings though. Gut strings are really for classical (mostly). If you want to play popular music, I'd learn to like metal.

TV's also process their pictures before displaying them (also laggy, unless the TV has a game mode, sometimes even then)

That tends to make things trickier than they need to be for a music game.

PC has a bit more flexibility too - you can always install the game on a newer PC, and bring any DLC you've bought with you.
you can move from the 360 to an xbox one, the DLC will follow your xbox lve account, but you may have to rebuy the base game.

If the TV has a VGA input, can't you just use a pc to drive it?

Also, replace your strings pretty quickly on all guitars. Put on Some Elixir strings. Factory strings are almost never as good as what you can buy.

They come in different models, with different sounds. If I remember correctly, you can just plug any pair of headphones with the regular jack made to be plugged into smartphones and mp3 players, and play just like that. They work on batteries and sound pretty good for such little things.

Get a full body "dreadnought" acoustic, my first was an Epiphone D-100 ($100), and 15 years later I still play it regularly. Great sound, and the low action makes it a lot easier to play than most other acoustics.

Don't listen to people telling you to drop $300+ on an instrument you can't play, there are plenty of good major-brand beginner guitars in the $100-200 range.

Buy a half sized or travel guitar, they aren't crazy great sounding but easy to bring around. I've used the Martin Backpacker before. Again it's not great sounding, but it works.

But in my opinion, get a Harmonica and learn to play while you're out hiking. It's the easiest instrument to learn and it doesn't weigh a thing.

If you want a GREAT electric on the cheaper side by Epiphone, they make this guitar which was actually suggested to me as a beginner. It's an amazing guitar, and I've been using it some for Rocksmith until my lessons for Acoustic begin in August.

Jasmine S35 Acoustic (it's not acoustic-electric so it doesn't have any way to be plugged in). Down the line you may want to pick up a better guitar or if you like the sound of your acoustic guitar you could try picking up a soundhole pickup, installing a custom pickup, or if you're ambitious, doing a DIY pickup install.

Much obliged. I actually ordered an Epiphone LP Special II Les Paul just a few hours ago. Assuming I actually stick with guitar this time around, I figure I'll have enough experience to walk into a guitar shop a year from now and pick exactly the guitar I want.

Any recommendations on strings/tools? Should I plan to turn my neck in X months? I noticed from a review on this particular guitar that the strings are lighter. Should I invest in a set of heavier strings and truss/rod adjustment now? I've held other guitars years ago and in a very amateur appraisal remember liking lighter strings because I didn't have to press so hard to get a note. I don't remember much more so hopefully this won't make Rocksmith impossible to play.

Worth noting that you can save some money by buying the guitar and game separately. The game including the cable is currently $41 on Amazon, while the guitar is always about $130. And any electric guitar will work, so you can trade that out for any other guitar if you like.

There was a post the other day in here about this Jasmine guitar. I played one a few weeks ago, played every string at every fret - no buzz, and the intonation was fine. For $100 bucks, it's definitely a good buy and one that you wouldn't have to be concerned about should it get blown up. There's a version without the cutaway that's about $20 cheaper.

I'm starting out too but, sadly, an amp is out of the question for me as I live in an apartment. I've been considering getting a Vox headphone amp and a pair of Sennheisers. Does that sound like a good alternative? Is there a better option?

Not the best you'll ever hold - but damned good value for the money. Solid tail piece, this is handy for within Rocksmith as you change tunings quite often, those guitars hold their tuning quite well.

Really thoughtful present! I will say, however, often the headphone out for amplifiers is shockingly bad. It just sounds overly distorted, fuzzy, and not very inspiring. I'd recommend looking into something like this as well to keep a nice sound :)

You don't mention a budget, but really for a starter guitar I have absolutely no complaints about the Les Paul Special II. It's a fantastic starter guitar and you won't realize it's "really crappy" after. It's from a reputable company with a warranty, and the quality out of the box is way above the awful, cheap no-name brand I tried at first (and immediately returned).

Honestly if you're just starting I wouldn't drop a ton of money on an expensive guitar, especially brand new. The LP Special II is cheap enough that you don't feel like you wasted a ton of money if you want to move on to something better later on, and you may even want to keep it around.

I was so happy with the LP Special II that I picked up the Epiphany DR-100 Acoustic Dreadnought, and was again impressed with the quality for the price ($99).

Do you need it to be full sized? I played around with a Gretsch Jim Dandy and it felt good to me - I liked the thick neck on it. The sound wasn't bad either - not what you'd get out of a dreadnaught or full bodied acoustic but not bad. I'd try one out at a store if possible, to see if it's for you (actually, that's what you should do whether it's for this guitar or any other)

As someone else has said, save up a little more money and invest it in a instrument that you will enjoy playing.

Squier has been suggested and I particularly like the Vintage Modified series.

Another option would be something like this.

You could find both of these instruments used for $100-$150, but they aren't too expensive new.

If you have half an interest in acoustic, look for the Yamaha 700 series or a Seagull. Both really good bang for buck.

They don't come much cheaper than this, and it was actually pretty decent. I got a good year out of it before I out grew it and upgraded to a Squier. I still use the amp it came with.

Also, I have one of these and it's spectacular. Here's a side-by-side so you can get an idea of what it looks like in real life.

But, because of the short scale it's tuned A - A instead of E - E, which means your chord fingerings will be different. (IE the shape you're used to for G major makes a C major in this tuning). I've tuned it down to E, and it's workable, but the strings are pretty floppy.

ok so this one is slightly out of your price range at $410, so if that knocks it out for you i understand. But this guitar has been recommended by several sites and players, and is made by Seagull (they make very high quality stuff.) its listed as an entry level instrument, but with my experience its actually a phenomenal guitar, especially at $400. So my advice would be to get this one (the seagull S6), and to spend the extra money for a guitar that will sound better than most other guitars, even those that are more expensive.

PS: You can get most of the above in kits or combos. Many practice amps have build in tuners and metronomes for example. Korg makes a combo metronome/tuner. Guitar kits come with an amp, a guitar, an instrument cable, and they sometimes throw in a bag, strap, and picks.

Another thing to consider: If you will always be practicing through headphones, instead of an actual amp, you can get a headphone amp, which can save you some cash, and provide sounds similar to very expensive classic amps like the AC30.

If you're travelling for the sake of entertaining others, I would probably get a Parlor Size steel string since nylon strings are usually really quiet. I just ordered the pink version of this guitar which seemed to be nice judging from youtube videos.

I'd recommend something like parlor guitar rather than either of those. The cordoba one would be tuned much higher than a regular guitar, and I wouldn't recommend a nylon string unless you want that particularly (if that is what you want then great). The backpacker is closer but it will have much less volume and fullness than something more conventional. Some options: ibanez gretsch recording king.

Don't buy that. Never buy a guitar you haven't held in your own hands. But that should be the price range you're looking for.

Acoustics hurt the fingers but they make them stronger for when you want to start trying an electric guitar.

My tip for you, is to the hold the guitar at eye level horizontally as if it were laying on it's back. Look and see how far the strings are from the fret board at any given point along the guitar. They should be close enough that they don't hit anything but not so far that you have a hard time pressing it down all the way. (this is called the "action" of the guitar).

You really need to go to a guitar store before you throw down $X for a guitar... ignore the color and the logo... I just sold my MIM Strat because it felt awfull (neck is to small for my hands) turns out I really like the wider Gibson/Epiphone style bodies.

Also, don't spend $300 for your first guitar.. maybe in a year (if you last a year) upgrade.

It is a great beginners guitar.

I still use it. Really flexible because of the pickup configuration. You won't believe this but the actual guitar isn't really that important after you get some basic quality issues settled. The yamaha's tend to have really good QC for cheap guitars. The only danger with that used one is whether it has developed any issues or not.

For rocksmith something without a tremolo bar might be better so it's easier to change tunings. It's not that hard but why have the inconvenience when Rocksmith doesn't make use of it.

It plugs in to your bass (like a lead would). It has a headphone output on it and an AUX input. Plug the output from your computer (the headphone socket) in to the AUX on this thing. Turn it on and you are good to go. They make them for bass and guitar and do varying models. I have one and use it all the time for late night practicing.

I use one of these, a korg volca beats as a metronome (plugged into the aux input on the amplug), and a pair of closed ear headphones. it's tight, you can practice, you can customize your metronome (unfortunately due to the limitations of the volca beats, you can't input 'songs' .. maybe replace that with a small drum machine of some other type). no need to interface with a computer. not the BEST tone, but it works. not exactly recording an ac/dc album, y'know?
