I don't have curly hair but I got the shampoo and conditioner recommendation from the r/curlyhair holy grails list. My hair is pretty weird, it's straight in the front, 2A then in the middle is a 2B and in the very back is a 2C. So my hair gets very undefined puffy waves (I wish I have curls). Also my hair is very dry almost waist length and I only wash my hair once a week.

shampoo So what I use is the Suave coconut essential conditioner and shampoo, I got a case of 6 bottles 30oz each for less than $11 on Amazon, and then I got one bottle of the shampoo at rite aid for less than $2. Before I wet my hair, I slowly and gently untangle it with a wide comb. Then I wet my hair and add generous amount of conditioner, and massage my scalp as if it was shampoo and untangle again. Then I rinse off the conditioner and use a pea size amount of shampoo, the shampoo will foam and you won't have to use much because the conditioner did a little bit of cleansing before hand. This method will help you use the least amount of shampoo possible.

conditioner Then I rinse off the shampoo well, and I add a very CRAZY amount of conditioner again (about 3-4 handfuls), I make sure that each strand is super coated, I massage my hair and work the conditioner for 15 minutes, I just don't leave it on, I really work it. Then only on the roots I add a bit of Cantu Grow Strong Strengthening treatment I got for $2.60 on Amazon, price goes up and down a lot so keep an eye on it, never paid over $3.50 for it. Make sure you don't spread this conditioner lower than your roots, it has a lot of protein and can make your hair feel hard, but it really works to stop my hair from falling off too much.

leave in Then gently use a towel and take the excess water off your hair. Now add the leaving conditioner, not too much because your hair will take too long to dry if you do, the one that works for me is Dominican Magic Nourishing Moisture Lock Leave On Conditioner, 16 Ounce
I got for $17, you will find it at Dominican or Korean beauty supplies in Hispanic/Latino neighborhoods. You can also get it on Amazon for $17.99 it does last a very long time, since you will only need about two quarter size squirts. Then, lastly add Cantu Anti Frizz Smoothing Oil only on the tips or your very dry areas, this one costed me $6. Make sure to work this very well into your hair and that every strand is coated evenly, and don't add too much, if you need more you can add more after your hair is dry.

drying Now to dry, I do hair rollers and I have a professional drying machine. But you can also use something like this. By not applying direct heat to your hair, your hair won't get damage. Direct heat is what damages the hair the most and overtime, your hair will look like crap if you use direct heat. Once your hair is damaged you can't repaired it. You can moisturize it but you can't mend split ends. So never apply direct heat to your hair, cause even if you do it a few times once your hair is damaged, it's damaged. Make sure that the hair is completely dry, it takes me an hour and 45 mins to dry, I know is a lot, but if your hair is a bit damp, trust me is going to frizz. After the hair is dry, I add a little bit of jojoba oil, I got a small 4oz Now Foods bottle on amazon for $8, I use it towards my tips and the middle of my hair, I add only a dime size. At first the hair will feel a bit greasy but overnight the oil will dry out, just make sure not to over do it.

Styling After drying I braid hair french style taking very small strands (French braiding gives better and more natural looking waves than a regular braid). Then when I'm ready to go out, I just gently undo the french braid and spray Herbal essence Bamboo hair spray(not sure if they still make it, but it's basically a hair spray that does not leave your hair crunchy at all and it's very flexible) Do not brush or comb through your hair. When it's raining/or I'm sweating or I'm at home or going to bed, I french braid my hair again.

If you want straight hair do a Tubi/Dubi overnight, use the Dominican method in which you take out the bobbypins or hairclips afterwards, then over the hairnet, tight a bandana or head scarf tight.

It seems like a lot, but you can read/use the internet while drying your hair with the rollers and I only do this once a week since my hair is very dry. If my scalp is getting greasy I use the dove dry shampoo, because it smells good and add volumes, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.

More curly hair advice! I know there's going to be a lot of conflicting advice, because everyone's hair is different. I have thick, brown. curly hair, and here's what works for me:

!. As someone else said, I don't shampoo every day. I have a sulfate-free, curly hair shampoo I use, and then a stronger one to deep clean once a week or so (it's Aussie brand right now, not anything special there).

2. I only ever comb and style my hair when it's wet. In the shower, the natural curl pattern comes out when the hair is soaked through - but I don't have the patience to only hand-detangle, so I use a wide-tooth comb right out of the shower, or sometimes in the shower if I'm going for ringlets.

3. I use a conditioner in the shower, rinse that out, use a super-absorbent towel to absorb some of the water, then use a leave-in conditioner or some other curly creme or product, comb that through, and scrunch just a little (I have to scrunch because my hair is still so wet here, that's it's heavy). I then blow-dry with a diffuser blow-drier for one minute - hair is still wet, but not dried out.

In general, curly hair holds better when it doesn't get too dry - hence the leave-in conditioner or other product. It's going to be trial and error, to figure out what techniques and products do what to her hair, and what she wants them to do! I can vary my curls a bit - if I comb in the shower, rinse, then don't disturb them, they do ringlets, but mostly I comb after my shower which makes for looser curls. I also recently have been using a fine-tooth comb after the wide one, to smooth out my hair a bit, though this does break up some of the natural pattern.

My main advice on things to try:

  1. Find someone who can CUT curly hair. It reacts very differently than straight hair, and a good cut will take out a lot of the work of making it look good. I've been going to my person for years, and her husband has super curly hair.

  2. Diffuser blow drier, OR diffuser attachment! Normal blow-driers will just fluff it up. Air-dry is also a great option. https://www.amazon.com/Conair-DF09NP-Volumizing-Diffuser/dp/B000JQY6DM/ref=sr_1_9_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1523896894&sr=8-9&keywords=diffuser+attachment+for+hair+dryer This is an example of a diffuser attachment, it just slides on the nozzle of a normal hair dryer.

  3. See if you can find curly or "natural" hair products. They're often in their own section. A lot of these are for black women's hair, and use argan or coconut oil - this is probably too heavy for blonde hair, but I've had great luck finding some lighter weight stuff there. This is most important for leave-in products, I often end up using non-curly shampoos anyway, but your mileage may vary.

Good luck to her on her curly hair journey! It's a lot to start out, but honestly it's going to be a lot of experimentation.

Background: I started getting my hair relaxed in my early teens for manageability. I did sports in high school and wasn't going to give it up, so I knew "salon fresh" wasn't sustainable. My mom would help me wash and cornrow my hair in between relaxers (~9 weeks).

At present, I'm 8 months into transitioning to natural. I know there aren't a ton of studies on black hair care products, but figured I could make a potentially healthier move away from relaxers. I'd started stretching them to 4ish months a few years ago since all I was going to do is sweat when I run. My hairdresser has been super supportive.

Challenges (along with learning all about my natural hair):

  • Over-protein loading my hair. Post-wash a few weeks back, my hair was super stringy, mangled, and not soft even before drying. I realized that most of my products had protein, and the build up wasn't helping my hair. I think I fixed it, as last week things were much better.
  • My hair, particularly the new growth, is dry so I'm constantly moisturizing and oiling.

  • Finding our how expensive professionally done cornrows/box braids are in my area. It's $100 min for cornrows, $300 for box braids locally. The fact that they last only 2ish months...that's a lot of investment.

  • My hair just looks poofy on my head scooped in a pony now. No brush is thick enough to tame the curls that lie beneath.

Hair comments from others: No one's ever said anything negative about my hair with working out that I can recall. People have been curious how I manage my hair, or will remark it looks curlier, but other than that not much. I even come back from lunch workouts with slightly sweaty hair and no one bats an eye.

Hair type and usual style: My hair is armpit length with about 4-5 inches of it stupid thick, 3c, coarse, and dry. Usually worn in a ponytail/bun. This week I did 2 big braids and called it a day. It's definitely helped keep it from tangling.

    Daily/weekly/monthly hair care routine

  • Daily (morning and bedtime): Spritz the generic It's a 10 leave-in from Sally's beauty supply in, follow up with shea butter or Proclaim 7 Olive Oil and comb. If working out, I'll try to remember putting dry shampoo (I use Not Your Mama's) in before working out, and then lightly blow dry or wrap hair in a t-shirt to dry after if super damp. Satin pillow case and satin lined cap/scarf since I'm a messy sleeper

  • Weekly - wash day + deep condition. Comb detangle, shampoo with Naked honey and almond whip shampoo, (new) condition with Every Strand Shea and Coconut oil conditioner. I leave it in for 20-30 w/ or w/out bonnet, rinse, spray the generic It's a 10 leave-in, let air dry/wrap in a shirt til 70% dry, and then blow dry on low heat. Usually I'll flat iron too for management, follow up with more leave-in + oil

  • I try to see my hairdresser every 3 months to get a good wash and DC. She lives ~1 hr from me, so it takes some planning during training at the moment.

I'm still on the hunt for products as I know my hair could use more TLC. Totally open to suggestions. My hair gets curlier with moisture and I get wispy/soft frizzies all over and even with edge wax idk how to combat that.

Hair style, products, or tips that you find useful

  • Still learning lolol, but wrapping hair at night helps me not tangle.

  • I'm a big fan of dry shampoo. It helps keep me smelling fresh, though doesn't help with preserving hairstyle, which is okay.

  • Detangling at night with a wide tooth comb and detangling leave-in is a savior.

  • Sweat is like a natural sea salt spray for me so adding the leave-in helps make my hair soft with it

Ok here’s what’s up. I’m an Asian woman from the US so I’m speaking from personal experience.

Asian men have it really hard when it comes to dating. There’s stereotypes about small dicks and a lack of masculinity and being emotionally withdrawn that make shit really fucking hard for Asian men. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this, but I just want to preface what I have to say with the sad and, frankly, disappointing truth.

Your look falls outside the realm of “average.” Your hair is long, which is usually a feminizing quality. You’re slender, you play an instrument, you wear a lot of black.

So, I could tell you to cut the hair, bulk up, and really emphasize your masculinity, but here’s where you have to make your choice. Would you rather find dating success as someone you are not or wait for someone to appreciate who you are?

There’s a few things you can do to enhance yourself now. Stand up straight, a slouch is not becoming on anyone. You can get a posture corrector online, they’re straps that go around your shoulders to help remind you to pull your shoulders back. That alone will impact your look dramatically. Always—yes, I mean always—have your shoulder blades pulled back.

You can clean up your hair a bit. If you wanted, you could get it cut just below your jawline. That’s a much more “acceptable” look these days (cc: Jon Snow).

You definitely have some great curl definition, but as a curly-haired Asian myself, it took me forever to find the right hair care regiment:

  1. I’m sure you know this, but don’t brush your hair except before a shower. Immediately before washing your hair, brush it out completely. Using a wide-tooth comb is preferred.
  2. Use a low-sulfate shampoo. These shampoos don’t bubble much, but they don’t coat your hair with gross chemicals, either.
  3. Use a hydrating conditioner. Put it in your hair, then get your whole head wet but don’t rinse it out. Do the rest of your shower regiment here what with the soap et al. Leave the conditioner in as long as you can, if it’s one minute or 20.
  4. Rinse out most of the conditioner. I actually prefer to rinse it all out, then add a tiny bit more.
  5. Get out of the shower, and squeeze your hair out gently using something like a cotton t-shirt. Terry cloth (towel material) creates mini tangles that result in frizz.
  6. Use a curl defining gel while your hair is wet and use the curl scrunch technique.
  7. You can let your hair air dry, or if you want to go all-out you can get a [cup diffuser](Conair Volumizing Diffuser https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000JQY6DM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_on.zDbH1D7ZQS) for a hair dryer. When you use the diffuser, you hold the hair dryer so it’s pointing straight up, and you just drop clumps of hair into the bowl of the diffuser. You then raise the hair dryer to cup as much of your hair as you can and you sit there. This allows your hair to curl as it would naturally.

Beyond that, I would suggest asking someone else for fashion advice because I’m not good at giving it, but I think your wardrobe could take an update if you’d like to give it one.

Also choose between clean shaven and not because the Asian fuzz isn’t flattering on anyone.

Let me end with this: you have a gorgeous face, you have gorgeous hair, and you are not undateable. If you feel as though you are, that may actually be the culprit. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: “No one wants to date me, therefore I’m not going to go introduce myself to that person over there because I don’t want to be rejected.” Chin up (gorgeous chin), your time will come.
u/Delfoxy · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

Can't speak for the blow dryer itself, just the weird hand diffuser that I use with my BaByliss Pro Rapido. I recently picked up the devafuser because I felt my regular diffuser wasn't quite doing enough - my ends were drying but my mid-shaft and roots were still damp even after a long while. I was 75% sure I would try it once and return it after reading reviews, people seem to either enjoy it or hate it.

I have fine hair that needs a lot of help getting definition and the devafuser does such a good job for me! It cups against my scalp better which makes it easier for my clumps to stay formed while drying. Also, unlike my regular round diffuser the Deva one has "fingers" that can be positioned right at my roots (just like if you were to stick your hand along your scalp). Doing this makes getting root volume SO much easier! It is a bit more difficult to work with big chunks of hair as they're more likely to slip off compared to a regular bowl shaped diffuser so for thick hair I feel like it would be easier to something like this. But all in all I think it does a better job getting my hair dry faster and with more volume.

I also will say like the others that investing in a quality dryer makes a huge difference. There are lots of guides and reviews out there - and don't be afraid to try something out and return it if it's not for you!

u/Dpecs92 · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

Get this aphogee: just the protein bottle of the 2 step treatment and use your deep moisture mask of choice for the "second step." 2 minute treatment is completely different and weak compared. This is an actual protein treatment like you'd get at a salon.

It's awkward the first time. You need to wash with a clarifying shampoo, towel dry, then add the liquid protein into your hair in sections. It gets really sticky once it starts drying and you'll want to refrain from touching your hair too much once it is actually dry because protein makes it rock hard and it will rip out or break of you pull hard enough. Once you're saturated, the best thing to do is use a hair dryer with a bonnet attachment like this but a diffuser will work as well. Heat will make the process faster and technically stronger but you can also air dry but it will take a while and gets uncomfortable with super sticky protein soaked hair.

After your hair is dry, wash it out completely. Take a few minutes to get it all out. Use a good deep conditioner after since your hair will feel dry and stiff from the protein right after. I like to leave it in for at least 30 min and add heat if I'm up for it.

Usually, my hair feels decent right after everything is done but it's truly magical after the 1st wash a few days post treatment. I get better culrs than I've ever had in my life, stronger hair, and need less styling products than normally.

My hair loves protein too but not even the strongest protein conditioner or leave in comes close to what a true protein treatment can do.

It's recommended to be repeated every few months after that and you can judge yourself.

Hey I just want to say that I really hear your struggle and frustration in this post. I think your hair looks really beautiful but I know its been pissing you off big time!

Your hair screams low porosity to me. I have high porosity so I'm on the other end of the struggle (currently battling super frizz life), but I've watched enough hair videos to know that heat is a low porosity gal's best friend. Hot water and heat caps seem to be the bare minimum of lo-po technique.

I found a heat cap that attaches to your hair dryer here:
Bonnet Hood Hair Dryer Attachment- Soft, Adjustable Extra Large Hooded Bonnet for Hand Held Hair Dryer with Stretchable Grip and Extended Hose Length (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077KGXJGH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hkoWBbY4ZV4HQ

Forgive me if you already have tried or considered these things but for $22 I'd definitely try out the cap.

Also you mentioned trying all the oils and creams in the book, but say argan is your current go-to. In my opinion argan is too light. I don't think it penetrates the hair shaft as well as olive oil. I'm high porosity and while argan makes my hair nice and soft, it does nothing for the frizzies around my crown. Only olive oil controls them for me.

I have yet to try Jamaican black castor oil but I have heard that is a super thick/penetrating oil as well.

I wish you luck! Don't give up hope!

Looking for product advice from fellow fine haired folk!

My hair: Fine, high-normal porosity (I think just high rn from heat damage), wavy, but sometimes get ringlets here and there, definitely mixes of diff curl patterns.

Routine: low poo w/ TJs Tea Tree Tingle shamp, STC w/ Sauve Coconut cond, rinse out cond, leave-in cond L'Oreal Elvive Protein Recharge, Herbal Essences totally twisted mousse, plop for 10-20 min, then diffuse to 80%ish with xtava Black Orchid diffuser.

What's working: My hair is the healthiest it's been in a long time just after following tips from y'all! Low poo is definitely working for me, and the diffuser I have is AMAZING (shoutout to someone on here who recommended it).

What's NOT working: I think I need to find a different product to put in after leave-in conditioner. I used gel on day 1 and I think it weighs down sections of my hair too much so I think I need a mousse, but the HE one made my hair look pretty shiny/made it really obvious there was product in it. Also having a hard time getting the ends of some strands to have wave.

Hair Journey: Recently moved to Seattle after being in a dry climate with hard water for 2 years. Knew that trying to straighten my hair/what I'd been doing was not going to work well for me/bring back epic hair struggles, and luckily I found this sub to help me out. While living in dry climate past 2 years, I had been straightening my hair or using a curling wand 2-5 times a week, so my hair was super damaged/always too dry from hard water and overuse of heat. I always struggled to find a way to do my hair that I actually liked growing up, and when I started using heat tools daily in high school it started to get damaged. I went to college in Seattle and the humidity here helped my hair get healthier but I spent a lot of time straightening it only to go outside and have it completely ruined in 5 minutes flat. Really hoping that CG method works for me and excited to have healthy hair for the first time in memory!!

My best advice is never to buy anything until you're absolutely sure you need it. Less is more. Don't acquire more stuff; instead, think about what you can leave behind.

Having said that, here are some of my fave travel products that I carry with me on my trips:

  • Mini-hairdryer - folds up teeny-tiny, dual voltage, powerful.
  • Packing cubes - keeps my stuff nicely organized and easy to find in my pack. Usually I take one double-sided one for clothes, and a smaller one for bras and underwear. Anything that doesn't fit in those is excess clothing, and I leave it at home.
  • Packable down jacket -- I like my LL Bean one since it comes in petite sizes -- fits my 5'1" frame well -- but any similar jacket will do. Saves a lot of bag space, and handy on cool evenings or cold climates.
  • 1-2 scarves -- I usually leave home with one, and often buy another one or two at my destination. They're useful for protecting my neck from the sun, wind and cold, for accessorizing, and for modesty in traditional destinations.
  • Mini-umbrella - I can't find a link to the exact one I use, but it's ultra-compact and fits in my purse. I find it handy in case of a sudden downpour.
  • Camping towel - some people prefer a sarong or just a t-shirt. But I'm a fan of this towel, which packs down tiny, dries fast, and covers my entire body.
  • Hand sanitizer - fairly self-evident.
  • NEXUS or trusted traveller card - okay, this isn't a "product". But it's the best $50 for 5 years that I've ever spent. TSA Precheck, breezing through security and customs lines every time I travel within North America or come home... I wouldn't do without it.
u/drowgirl · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Okay, here we goooooo. Funtimes with hair toys.

I have this only, with a red handle, that I use as my basic curling iron. Cheap, you say? Yes. But it works very well, and it gets the job done.

This guy is my hair dryer. I rarely use it, but when I do, it does very well. The hot setting is pretty hot, though. I tend to stick to low.

My mother bought me this straightener a couple years ago, but I rarely use it, preferring this one that I've had for YEARS. Well that's the newest version of the same one. I like the grip on my old one better.

DO NOT FORGET TO USE THIS. It is a life-saver. Hair-saver. Whatever.

BONUS TIME:

I've found that curling or straightening my hair the night before is the best, and then putting my hair in one of these keeps it well-behaved and styled for the next day.

YMMV.

u/starrkittyface · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

I have read here / seen on YouTube that a lot of curlies have success with this diffuser which can attach to this dryer. I think depending on shipping / any discounts you'd be right around $50 maybe a lil over. I think you can technically attach the diffuser to other hair dryers but may have to do some handiwork to get it secure. :-)

I got this one years ago (before I started CG) and it came with the diffuser pictured, it's still going strong all these years later and for the way I diffuse it is perfect. Gotta love the $25 price and the cold shot button.

I hope this helps! :-)

Edit: forgot words

not necessarily, you can just air dry. diffusing will speed up your drying time and also prevent the weight of wet hair from weighing your curls down, but you don't need it

>What blow dryer do you have? Does it even matter?

honestly, the kind of blow dryer doesn't really matter. i just bought one that would fit my diffuser. i do like that mine can do medium and cold air though, and not just hot

>I don’t have a diffuser. I lost that part... lol.

i see some people here pooling their hair in a strainer/sieve and then just pointing the blowdryer at it, so maybe that could work lmao

>Do you wear protective hair styles? If so what do you do to protect your hair?

personally, not really, although i wear my hair in a high ponytail on top of my head when i go to sleep so i don't smush my curls flat. i also sleep on a satin pillowcase

>How often do you wash your hair?

i wash mine once a week but this will be different for anyone you ask. everyone's hair is different; some people's hair needs to be washed every day. so this is for you to figure out

>How do you know if it’s “approved” it doesn’t have silicones or anything like that in it.

run the ingredient lists through curlsbot and/or isitcg

Looks SO great! Gold medal to your stylist, for giving you great advice. She's a keeper.

I, like you, shower etc. at night. Now that I CGM, I try to make sure I do all this business pretty soon after dinner, so that I have a good 2-3 hours dry time. Also, do you have a diffuser that attaches to your blow dryer? If so, use it. If you don't, or don't like the one you have, the xtava black orchid diffuser was a game changer for me!!!

https://www.amazon.com/xtava-Black-Orchid-Diffuser-Natural/dp/B00VJ06PG8/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1541634265&sr=1-1&keywords=xtava+black+orchid+diffuser&dpID=41NlimuE%252BHL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

Diffusing upside down will give your hair, esp w/your short, layered haircut, lots of volume.

I sleep in my crunch, and when I wake up, there are usually only a few curls/waves in the front that need sotc.

hth!

I like the Conair 1875 Watt Ionic Ceramic Hair Dryer. I have the pink one but I think when I bought it, the colors were the same price.

It comes with a diffuser and it works really well. Has a legitimate cold setting as well as a cool blast button along with the standard warm and hot. Warm works well enough for me. I use cold to check if my roots are still wet or not.

I personally let my hair air dry for about an hour before diffusing for the best results. When I diffuse after waiting this long, it takes literally five minutes to dry my whole head and I have shoulder length hair. If I don't do this, it will literally take the whole day to dry so I think an hour and 5 min is much better.

A very cool invention! Bet this person has made some bank. :)

That, combined with a hair dryer, makes it so much easier to remove labels.

ETA: I found one of these, Used, on eBay and it's perfect. It's the small travel version with a folding handle and has Tourmaline crystals in it which help reduce static electricity. It's great for my hair, as well! :)

You're going to get a bunch of different opinions on that DevaCurl dryer. It is a reputable and well-loved brand for sure, but it has a very nontraditional diffuser (the green thing on the end) that some people love and some people hate.

Personally, I use this hairdryer and absolutely love it, along with this diffuser, and am really happy with it.

Honestly, I do not think the dryer really matters as long as it's a decent brand. There really aren't any dryers that I've found that are specific to curly hair, the difference is all in the diffuser for me personally.

u/TheDragonKnight · 3 pointsr/malehairadvice

I would purchase a better hairdryer if it's in your budget. This is the one I use: https://www.amazon.com/Infiniti-Conair-Salon-Performance-Styling/dp/B00FNQRCS4/ref=sr_1_37_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1523024287&sr=1-37&keywords=blow%2Bdryer&th=1

After showering, I towel dry my hair until it is still slightly damp and will hold a shape when I comb it. I usually use Original by Blumaan as a prestyler as it gives a bit of heat protection, but this is not really necessary. From there I comb my hair to the basic shape that I want. I then blow dry the sides down first, using the concentrator attachment. Then go along my part to make sure that it stays and is well defined. For my hair length, about 4-5" in the front, I start blowdrying at the back in the direction that I want it to stay, lifting up the hair with my fingers to allow the air to hit the roots and add volume. I move forward, lifting the hair and sort of holding it in the position that I want it to be. Some people use a round brush as well which allow you to lift the hair and pull it up and back to give a different look. I tend to use the hottest setting at the very beginning, but I make sure to keep the hair dryer moving constantly so as not to cook my head or hair. After it is mostly dry I will switch to the medium heat to hit any stubborn hairs that don't want to be tamed. This write up makes it sound like this takes a long time, but all of this happens in about 60-90 seconds.

u/HaiirPeace · 3 pointsr/FancyFollicles

I bought this one after my $40 Conair Yellow Bird dryer broke. I'm very happy with my choice. I've had the purple Revlon dryer for a couple years now and I love that it's super light so my arms don't get as tired. Plus under $20 for a dryer was awesome. I feel like it dries my hair faster than my older expensive dryer as well!

u/aFewHonestWords · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

I have a shoulder length bob and am 2B on top and a 2C underneath. Here is what my current routine is:

In shower:

  1. As I Am Cowash to cleanse hair. Apply just around scalp. (going to have to change this, because I just discovered it is not 100% CG friendly, I love it soo much though)

  2. Completely rinse that out

  3. One pump of Deva Curl - One Condition, run through bottom length of hair.

  4. One more pump of Deva Curl - One Condition, flip head upside down and finger come hair out, trying to avoid scalp until most of conditioner is off of my hands.

  5. Fill a cup with water, flip head upside down and then pour water into cupped hand to squish to condition, one cup is usually enough. I use this method until all of my waves/curls are nicely grouped and there are no stray hairs.

  6. With head still upside down squish excess water out of hair with hands (squish up towards scalp)

  7. Go about the rest of my business, being sure to not get hair any wetter

  8. After drying myself off, I use my towel to wrap up my hair in a twisty turbine method. I don't rub my hair in the towel, just twist it up. I used to wrap my hair up pre CG, and when I first started CG method, I avoided this, because terry cloth is supposed to be bad for curls. I hated squishing with t-shirts or microfiber towels, because my hair still seemed so we afterwards. Between the two methods I don't notice a frizz difference, so I do what is easier for me and it doesn't stretch my curls out.

  9. Take hair out of towel and put a big glob of Eco Olive Oil Styling Gel (from Sally's beauty supply) in hands, evenly distributed. Smooth down hair right around my part then scrunch it into all of my hair. I usually use 3-4 globs (comes in a tub, I love it!). Flip head upside down and squish some on the underside. My hair only gets a little crunchy, if I air dry, or don't completely dry it out before I head out for the day. Usually scrunching it gets rid of any crunchiness.

  10. Plop hair into long sleeve t-shirt. This step is magical and very important.

  11. Take down and diffuse with hair dryer.

I still have a little more frizz than I'd like, so I'm looking for a new product to help with that and I just bought this hooded bonnet to dry my hair instead of using the diffuser.

My waves have really amped up since I've gone CG. I am so thrilled with how they've improved over the past 2 years and am never going back.

    (edit: grammar and format)
u/bluepetrichor · 2 pointsr/CurlyHairUK

I use this one

It is a universal one but it fit my ancient blow dryer. The end is like a silicone tube that slides over the hair dryer so I think it would work for most dryers.

It's huge, which I love because you can fit loads of hair in the bowl. I don't find it heavy and never have a problem with it coming off the dryer. The only downside to its size is it would be impractical for travel.

u/zorefire · 5 pointsr/BlackHair

Easy.

Get it soaking wet let usually the best time to shampoo and conditionit. dry like 50% then do what is called a blow out although his hair isn't really blow out to the max

This can do the trick for you Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Styler, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013HJEA4C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_wY9lDb938VJXK

Also use Heat protectant so you don't burn your hair from the hot air.

This is often the best method to get super tidy braids.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have a whole WL that's called "Most Wanted" but I think the top item on it is this hair drier. My hair is just so thick and it takes FOREVER to dry. It's supposed to be really good a quickly drying thick hair and has all sorts of nifty attachments.

Thanks for the contest Internal_Cannon! <3

u/deviltje · 1 pointr/femalefashionadvice

I never use heat protectant, I was under the impression that you only need that when using a straightener :D I use this mousse with this hair dryer. The links take you to German amazon though. Remington is also sold on amazon.com though and this one is similar, has fantastic rating and is really cheap as well. For hair mousse, if you want to use it, you will have to test what works for you. It's really YMMW with care products I find. In the summer I tend to use wax instead though, as the heat from the sun dries out my hair a lot and the protective "wet" layer from the wax works nicely to combat that.

Hair mousse/styling foam is different from heat protection. Mousse is mainly water and alcohol and heat protection will work with silicones which "drape" around your hair to protect it from the heat.

u/welcometoraisins · 1 pointr/AskWomen

I have tons. Creams work better than sprays for me, though sometimes I'm lazy and use sprays. My favorite is Shu Uemura Essence Oil Cream; second favorite cream is Oribe Supershine. Favorite spray leave-in is Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea. I blow dry with a straightening brush like this. Lately though I've been using this, which is my new favorite thing ever. Takes longer than a brush and blow dryer, but I can do it one-handed. I also have this, which I also love. Takes ages to dry my hair though, so I don't use it as much now that my hair is long.

u/childfree_IPA · 2 pointsr/AskWomen

This one is a little pricey (I'm pretty cheap), but I've had mine for 4 years (and had very long hair for the first 2 years) and it's still just as powerful and effective as the day I got it. It has a retractable cord, too, so it is easier to transport.

The Deva Curl diffusers DO look like a creepy hand! LOL

My favorite diffuser for my fine, medium density 2B-3A waves/curls is the Black Orchid. The DC type diffusers are great for the roots, but the rest of my hair does better piled into the Black Orchid for pixie diffusing.

u/2milien · 6 pointsr/amiugly

You’re not ugly, just disheveled and a little scruffy. Improving how you dress and wear your hair is all you need tbh.

Lucky for you I’ve got Some tips on curly hair! Don’t use just any shampoo/conditioner, if you want your curls to look neater use products that are specific to curly hair. (Ex: Shea Moisture/ Aussie Miracle Curl products). And don’t blow dry your hair, that’s what makes it all frizzy. Either blow dry it with diffuser attached at the end or just let it air dry. And when you sleep try putting your hair in French braids to preserve your wavy pattern.

It came in the package with the dryer---in the higher end dryers, I think that's true. I really like the diffuser. My only complaint about mine would be that the diffuser snaps onto the dryer, which means that if it ever breaks, I won't be able to replace it with another one (unless Babyliss sells a replacement). The "universal" diffusers designed to fit "any" dryer push onto the nozzle. The Babyliss Torino I have has a short, compact nozzle that won't take a universal.

[This](BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Torino Mid-Size Dryer, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003B6NU7U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_o4tHyb2HBCFXG) is the dryer I have.

I also have [this diffuser](Conair Pro Tourmaline Universal Finger Diffuser, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003176BES/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_U5tHybAQBVYVN) and really like it. It does not fit the Babyliss. My hairdresser uses this one in her salon, due to the size.

Hope this formatting works from mobile!

AWESOME CONTEST!!!!

  1. Hair Dryer and bottle brush

Once upon a time, there was a hair dryer. The hair dryer belonged to Rapunzel. Rapunzel made the hair dryer feel very wanted, because it got used for 3 hours while Rapunzel dried her hair. Unfortunately, this got the hair dryer very dirty. One day while Rapunzel was drying her hair, the hair dryer died. Instead of trying to fix it, Rapunzel got angry and threw the hair dryer on the ground and set out to by another one. The hair dryer was very sad. Eventually, the bottle brush asked the hair dryer what was wrong. The hair dryer said "I used to be wanted, and now that I can't blow dry Rapunzel's hair anymore, I feel very lonely. I want someone to turn me on and use me like Rapunzel did for hours every day." And so the bottle brush got an idea. "Let me clean you out so Rapunzel can use you again. I'm sure once I get into you, you'll feel like a brand new woman." And so all afternoon the bottle brush cleaned the hair dryer, working himself in and out of her until all the hair was gone. When they were finished, the hair dryer said "Oh thank you! I'm sure Rapunzel will appreciate me without all that hair." And so Rapunzel came back after a day of no luck finding a new hair dryer and found her old one clean and hairless. Deciding to give it a try, Rapunzel went back to using her old hair dryer all evening long and loved it. The end.

    Schmad on my add on!

My old diffuser that came with my hair dryer is there for comparison. I learned about this diffuser from a couple of CG YouTubers and I've been eyeing it for awhile. It was only $12.99 on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VJ06PG8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qL2TBbT47FCGE

I used it this morning and it definitely dried my hair more quickly and I think helped some with frizz

Fyi, it's marketed as only fitting on a 6" diameter, but it has a inner ring that is very easy to remove (which is what I did to fit it on my Revlon 1875).

u/Neofrog · 8 pointsr/curlyhair

Mine where so damaged for so long I forgot that my hair could look as healthy as what people post here.

I think what helped the most was frequent moisturizing. They’ve gained some of the shine and definition from years before I allowed salt water to destroy them.

I also found experimenting was essential into finding the perfect technique that somewhat worked for me.

In the end, what I think helped the most for me was a descent big bowled diffuser along with additional moisturizing with jocoba oil.

This is the diffuser that changed everything!

A little mousse goes a long way, but there are also curl defining sprays like John Frieda. I could have sworn bumble and bumble had one, but devacurl and ouidad definitely have some. Creams work, but they also can weigh your hair down if you use too much.

u/WannabeBadGalRiri · 6 pointsr/blackladies

😂 I know! YouTube exploded with the Denman brush being used on every natural girls head. I recently gave into the hype for the Revlon one step hair dryer that looks like a brush (I haven't used a hair dryer let alone had a blowout in over 3 years) but it was a splurge purchase since when I bought it, it was around $30. Weeks later it's still unopened because I do not have the time to be blowing out my hair haha.

u/Blobtdq · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I hate using a diffuser, officially, and I would LOVE some tips. My hair is waist length, layered, extremely thick south Asian 2c hair, and my hair just never dries with a diffuser.

Pre CG I used shampoo then conditioner, squeezed my hair with my hands like crazy to get all the water out until it was merely damp, then air dried it overnight (frizzy, damp patches) or blow dried on high heat without a diffuser (mega frizzy, but bone dry!).

Now I shampoo (dandruff), squish to condish with a ton of no silicone conditioner, add Boots curl creme by cupping the clumps of hair and squeezing gently (attempting to get rid of some water). I plop into a microfibre towel, which obvs doesn't really soak much water, and go straight to the diffuser. My hair is dripping wet at the start.

Even when I put it on the highest heat setting due to impatience my hair literally will not dry with a diffuser after 20mins with my head upside down and my neck about to break, at which point it's still wet but at least not dripping everywhere so I give up, sometimes plait it to avoid frizz, and get on with my day. The shorter layer at the front is dry and forms a tight bouncy curl which is WONDERFUL, but the rest is wet which is horrible!!!

I can't air dry like this because it would still be wet in the morning plus it's uncomfortable to sleep with very wet hair and encourages mold.

Any tips welcome! Thank you from a very frustrated newbie curlie who wants to chop off all their hard-earned hair length at the moment and live a carefree shoulder length life!!!

Curly haired girl here.
Use a diffuser when blow drying (that attachment that comes with most blow dryers). Seriously, it's a life saver. I don't use product but I comb my hair how I want it to be parted, put it up in a towel for about thirty minutes, and blow dry using the diffuser itself to scrunch my hair.

I use the Conair universal attachment. I highly recommend it.

  • This Remington model is fantastic. Variable heat and power settings make it 'customizable' depending on preferences (e.g., different temperatures and power settings deliver different hair styles, etc.).

Have you seen the r/curlyhair subreddit? I've gotten a lot of great ideas there. I personally use the DevaCurl products...NoPoo, Conditioner, and Gel. I also spray with a leave in conditioner spray by OUAI. I get very little frizz.

Also, since I diffuse once in awhile, I bought a new hair dryer and diffuser. They make a WORLD of difference in my curls. I leave the dryer off, plop my curls in the diffuser, then turn the dryer on and leave it in place until dry. Then I turn off the dryer and repeat for the different sections. Seriously, just doing that may improve your curls. I used to leave the dryer on and just move around the diffuser. That resulted in frizzy hair.

My lovely friend /u/margalicious NEEDS this hair dryer!! Did you kno she doesn't have one!?! And I'm not too sure where your from but it was snowing...yes snowing at my house the other day. If marg hasn't had snow yet she will soon...and do you lnow what happens when a chica goes outside....in freezing weather.'.with wet hair?? ICICLES! A head full of pokey icicles! And on top of that she would probably get sick...I would cry, she would miss her final exams, can't RA her kids (the dorm would riot!) would have to drop out of school n come bum it on my very uncomfortable couch...all because she doesn't have a hair dryer. (On a side note she recently got the most adorable hair cut ..another reason for a hair dryer!)

It's a couple bucks over fifteen and I don't need double talk, I need some cheapish yarn to make a scarf because I just learned how to crotchet n my neck is cold. If how i split it up itsnt ok u can just gift margalicious the whole amount!

I forgot to mention about diffusing! You can use a hairdryer with either a diffusor attachment, or you can get a diffuser bonnet

Otherwise, you can let your hair air dry :)

Getting something that small that also produces heat will be challenging, because heat requires a lot of energy to produce. The smallest blow dryer I can find is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Conair-Vagabond-Compact-Folding-Handle/dp/B000094ZDX/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2ZWIBOA91LO1L&keywords=mini+blow+dryer&qid=1570035535&s=gateway&sprefix=mini+blow+d%2Caps%2C199&sr=8-4

if you are looking at something close to the size of a pen, something like this will help, but will obviously take much longer to dry the paint: https://www.amazon.com/OURRY-Desktop-Personal-Operation-Compatibility/dp/B072PWLDK3/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=pocket+fan&qid=1570035667&s=gateway&sr=8-4

Conair 1875 Watt Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Dryer, Grey/Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00132ZG3U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_xdj1xbAYVV3H3

I like it. It's not high end, and I've never had a diffuser before it so I don't have anything to compare it to, but it does the job well.

I've had good experiences with this guy from Rusk, which is extremely lightweight!

u/WiggleBottom · 2 pointsr/MakeupAddiction

I might try it with a paddle brush then and see how it works for me. I was thinking of getting this dryer but I wasn't sure http://www.amazon.com/Infiniti-Conair-SD8-Tourmaline-Ceramic/dp/B001330XFA/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1300633041&sr=8-19 I just thought maybe it would make it easier.

Why don't they fit? Is your hairdryer nozzle too large or too small? I have a Babyliss professional dryer that's too small for most diffusers. I've found three that work. From smallest to largest, they're a collapsible silicone one like this, the Gama Professional (Amazon link) and the Diva Pro XXL.

u/stephnstuff · 1 pointr/TheGirlSurvivalGuide

I've had this one for awhile now and really like it for the price.

This

I have it and really like it. Not too expensive either.

This is the hair dryer I normally use: http://www.amazon.com/YOU-Reel-Conair-2-Styler/dp/B000R80ZTQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

The diffuser part isn't too big. Should I look in to getting a bigger diffuser attachment, or a different hair dryer?

I do move my hair around while drying. I will limiting movement. Also, do you have any gel suggestions?

I got this one after it was recommended by another poster on here

Gama Professional Italy AV11.600... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00O34C3NG?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

u/Caisha · 3 pointsr/curlyhair

It's just the type/brand of diffuser!

u/RetiredStripperClown · 5 pointsr/curlyhair

Get a universal diffuser. They're designed to work with most blow dryers. I kept breaking the diffusers that came with my blow dryers, so I bought one of these I can even use it with those tiny blow dryers in hotels.

u/rbkc12345 · 1 pointr/curlyhair

I use the

Revlon Rvdr5029 1875 Watt Smoothstay Ceramic Ionic Dryer,

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ICXCG6?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf dryer

Its lasted since 2015, apparently, so I can recommend it, but anything with a standard nozzle will work.

u/a1icey · 1 pointr/FancyFollicles

i use this blowdryer with a concentrator: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003QKL5YQ/ref=oh_o02_s00_i01_details

it may not be powerful but it is LIGHT.

i only blow-dry my roots.

u/Jenjenmi · 2 pointsr/curlyhair

I work out daily, so I wash my hair daily and need to blow dry it as I don't think my hair would ever dry if I didn't diffuse it.

Has anybody tried a blow dryer bonnet for their curls? Wondering if this would be better or worse than diffusing:
