It’s not my favorite. There’s a sliding scale with welding hoods imo. It’s green on the left and color on the right. The speedglas is the greenest out of all the expensive hoods. Its got good clarity and is very comfortable on the eyes but has very little color and is difficult to use in the light stage for example for grinding. Then there are hoods like the optrel and arc one, they have an incredible amount of color and clairty but it isn’t as comfortable on the eyes. It also is very easy to work with in the light mode. I used to really want a speedglas because I used to think that they were the most advanced hood. I now know that they are the least advanced hood in terms of technology. I was pretty underwhelmed when I got the chance to weld with one.

I don’t want to unduly worry you but I would take honestly take a passive $40 hood or a $130 auto dark over the speedglas because I need that clarity and color in the light stage and the color in the dark stage. I just can’t see the puddle that well in the speedglas as I can with the arcone singles 240hd or arcone bffvx or the lincoln hoods or the sentinel A50 or even passives.

I attached an amazon link with the 3350, I suggest you read the first review, that guy had a speedglas. Either way, i’m sure he’ll love it. The speedglas isn’t a bad hood and i’m sure it’s an improvement on what hems using.

Based of this post by /u/veriix and the headstrap adapter by /u/nw15062 using this as the headstrap replacement.

It blows my mind how well it works. It took a bit of tweaking, sizing, etc, to get it set up just right. I was skeptical thinking it might only make a very VERY slight difference compared to the default Vive velcro straps... but thankfully I was mistaken. It makes a huge difference.

The headstrap seems to hug your head like I imagine the PSVR head-mount does. All the extra cushion really helps, and thanks to the slight downward angle of the adapter between the straps and HMD itself, there is a super handy pivot outwards effect that when worn, the headset just ever-so-gently slips down towards your face with only about ~5-10% of the pressure compared to the default straps.

Basically, it essentially eliminates the all of the weight from the HMD resing on your forehead / cheekbones... and taking it on and off is super comfortable as it pivots up and out, away from your face when taking it off or peeking out from under.

EDIT: After playing with it for a bit, I have came to the conclusion that it's about 20% more comfortable on the head, but removes about 90% of the front-weight face pressure. It could be more comfortable around the temples when tightening it all down.

As is, maybe not the best (including other brands of headlamps) since the fabric probably doesn't have the best grip on the smooth surface and could slide up. There's multiple ways to prevent that including velcro, double sided tape, and hooks. There's also these upside-down triangle that hook over and prevent the strap from sliding up. Typically they're found on climbing helmet but I've seen them sold separately somewhere before, just can't seem to find the link now. {Edit: Closest thing I can find atm.}

An even better option would be a dedicated mounting bracket although it might not be the best option around electricity.

No, they have different LEDs in them. There's quite a few different Wizard headlamps although their modes and user interface are all pretty similar. There's two different LEDs that Armytek is using, the XP-L and the XHP50. Even though the beam pattern would be the same because of the honeycomb lens, the XHP50 is a little more efficient so that would be the better choice of the two although the $10 difference probably isn't worth the upgrade in the different LED.

I don't own the Wizard but I do have experience with it. I do own two different Armytek Pro version lights and love the magnetic tailcap.

The leather pipefitter ones are pretty sweet... My buddy has an old one that he uses as a backup. Plus you won't catch your head on fire. Might also come in handy in a zombie apocalypse.

Hobart makes a pretty solid one too. Things to look for are replaceable glass and headstrap adjustments. The one i have uses the same headstrap assembly as a hardhat so i can buy a new assemble when the old one gets gross (from sweat and grime). I really like the auto dark ones. They aren't as solid as an old-school style one but they are really handy.

The safety glasses are pretty cool too. I wouldn't want to make big welds with them but they are nice if you're tacking something together. Make sure they're for ARC welding and not oxy. Oxy/Acetalyne glasses are lighter than arc glasses and they will burn your eyeballs out if you use them while arc welding.

Also it's a good idea to have a plain piece of glass so you can weld in a pinch. I keep one in my 4X4 when i run trails just in case i have to battery-weld something.

If you are talking sub-$100, I really like this combo: get a cheap, new or used pipeliner style hood with a 2x4 lens. Jackson, Honeywell, etc. Then go on Amazon and buy the ArcOne Tradesman auto-darkening lens for $70 (currently), shade 10 with a 3-year warranty. You'll get an indestructible hood you can trash around with an excellent and lightweight lens, great clarity and color, and can easily swap the lens between hoods or trade out for a fixed-shade lens if needed. I've been really happy with mine.

Welding headgear- any should do if you happen to have one laying around, but you want to make sure it has 2 straps over the top instead of just 1 which you find with the cheaper ones. It provides more distributed support. This one should do. I use this one, but the one I found for you just seems better.

3D printable adapter piece that connects the Vive to the Welding mask. If you do not have access to a 3D printer this job may cost you ~$15-20.

That's it, all you would need to do it cut off the front piece of the mask so the sides are flush and use some zipties or velcro to attach the cable coming from the HMD to at least one of the 2 straps on your head for further stability. Overall the price to purchase everything fresh would probably lean around $40-45. If you feel the integrated headphones are worth if for the extra $55 + HTC Shipping then go for the DAS, for me though it was a non-issue.

EDIT: If you need pictures of my setup I can post them, but once you get the parts it's pretty intuitive what you need to do.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that unit per se, but you have to ask yourself if it will truly be used. It looks heavy and prone to fogging to me, and I know that if it were me, it would most likely quickly be relegated to a drawer somewhere and forgotten about.

The most dangerous dust from woodturning occurs when sanding, so many folks opt for only wearing dust protection at that time and going without a faceshield during that operation since it's also when there is the least danger of a piece exploding / unexpected dismount. Everyone has to decide on their own comfort level of safety protocols but I'd say the above is adequate protection for an otherwise careful hobby/occasional turner. At the other end of the spectrum, most pros that are going to be exposed to dust for days on end eventually opt for something like this:

And, it's important to note, dust collection at the source while sanding is far more important to the overall picture in terms of dust safety and health than PPE.

We did a lot of stacking toys, building with blocks, big chunky puzzles. I like to look up skills that she can work on. Clapping, blowing bubbles and stuff like that

I and a majority of the guys I work with use this hood with a gold lens (I use a comfort gold lens, but good luck finding a place online that sells them). Order some surgical tubing to replace rubber band on the head gear and you're good to go.

Learning to flip your hood down is part of the game if you choose to run a passive lens. I would suggest at least learning to use a passive hood so that in the event that something happens to your auto-dark you will not have any problems switching to a passive.

Work in a heavy duty fab shop, run a pipeliner with an auto in it. I've got the flip-up on it, which is extra handy given the policy on faceshields while grinding. A lot of other guys use the modern style hoods (company provides an adflo for everyone, or they just use their own "normal" auto dark). But they always have to switch between weld and grind modes or switch to a hood with just a clear in it to grind, they don't wanna grind on the expensive clears. I just flip the lens and grind away. Super light, doesn't reflect much light inside because of the chin, never catch sparks on my neck or chest. I'd highly recommend the pipeliner with an autodark in it for school, even if it's not the flip up (the flip up has some lens thickness restrictions since it slides in the side like a pancake, had to file the opening out a bit on mine). Get a gold 10 as well to run open roots with, sucks if your lens flickers the entire time you're doing those with stick.

Mine is the rubber band headgear, which was instantly replaced by surgical tubing. Had it for almost 2 years now and the only other hood I own is a pancake.

for a welder, buy a used lincoln 225 AC buzz box and learn to use 6011, its the best rod to get good at. all other rods are fairly easy to run. look on craigslist. all you need for clothing is a long sleeve shirt like a dickies work shirt they are $20 at walmart and get welding gloves at a welding store or tractor supply. also wear safety glasses when chipping welds. go to a junkyard for scrap steel to practice on.

You can cut it and add leather but yeah it’ll pour light in and I can’t stand that. If you want a passive big window just look at a Jackson HSL 100 I use one as well as a sugar scoop and I love it.

I don't know if it's a direct fit, but best comfort Is the Miller headgear. I modified my helmet to fit it, and it sits on my head so nicely.

Amazing. I commuted on a similar (slightly older) Fuji for almost a year.

I can't overstate what a cheap, easy, and major difference it makes on a bike like this to add some non-aero hoods. That along with some bar tape can make it feel like a brand new bike (and make riding on the hoods a much more comfortable proposition).

I wanted to share my creation, my original Vive head strap started to come apart so I sent it out to be warranty replaced, in the meantime I bought a welding mask headgear from amazon. Removed the front strap and 3d printed some left right bracket.

This unit allows for depressing a button on each side and removing the HMD by pulling it forward from the face, quick release essentially, leaving the head strap on your head while removing the HMD. also the knobs on the side can be loosened and the whole thing can flip up onto my forehead.

I have the STL files for 3d printing if anyone is interested I have posted them because I am continuing to make fine modifications.

Although I'd suggest getting better brake handles. I got some Shimano 600 drilled off eBay for $15 in pristine condition, but that was blind luck because other auctions had them selling for $50+, Now I see them for $130.

There are also retro looking modern handles that are supposed to work really really well and aren't terribly expensive . It's a worthwhile upgrade.

It's made by Honeywell, but you'll see them advertised as "Fibre-Metal Pipeliner". Not sure if Fibre-Metal is what they call the material (Which seems to be some sort of fiberglass variant), or if it's a subsidiary brand of Honeywell. THIS is the right one, and the exact one I have.

But as a word of warning, I hate the stock headgear. Some people seem to love it, but I couldn't get used to it. It's basically a rubber band on a clip, and I broke mine the first day I had it. I switched it out with THIS Jackson headgear. You'll have to drill out the square hole that the existing headgear uses, and then drill a few smaller holes where the adjustment tab clicks in. I had an easy time since the hood I use for TIG is a Jackson hood that uses that same headgear so I was able to make a template. If you're interested I could try to figure out what size the holes need to be and send you a picture of the layout tomorrow.

Also, if you want a flip-lens, Sellstrom sells a flip lens mod, but it does require significant cutting. I bought one a while back, but haven't had the guts to install it yet (Plus I'm worried about the extra weight.). Very handy if you're switching between welding and grinding a lot, or if you want to save your neck and avoid doing the nod every time you strike an arc.

Outlaw Leather also sells pre-modified Pipeliners. They're a little bit too out there for me, but I've seen a couple around the shop and they definitely get a lot of looks.

This is a little project I've been working on, it's a pair of adapter pieces that allow the Vive headstrap to be replaced with a commercially available welding headgear, found here. This was primarily inspired by a response made to one of my posts a month ago, which was the same idea but for a different headgear:

The main advantages that using a welding headgear gives you is that the Vive can be "flipped up" above the head when not in use, and the Vive isn't pulled against the face as much.

One for the front when it’s down. And when it’s up, One on the hood to protect your face. And the last one again when it’s up to protect the backside of the auto darkening lense.

Also the auto darkening lense and the protective cover are called 2x4. And 2x4 lense should fit In the hood.

Does he have his own helmet? The miller classic series that has auto darkening is under 100 and it's what I'm using in class right now.

Pipeliner welding hood

Tillman 850 welding gloves I highly recommend these gloves. The palm is unlined so you have plenty of dexterity to stick, mig, or tig with. The back is insulated to protect you from burning to a crisp.

Wrangler work shirts (get a few of them) I wear these shirts every day for work. Depending on your budget, you may not be able to get a few of these versus one decent welding jacket. If that's the case, I recommend a heavyweight denim jacket or the basic FR green welding jacket.

Safety glasses (get a few of these, as well as a dark pair for cutting)

Steel or composite toe work boots. I'm not going to recommend a pair... everyone is different. I do prefer Carolina boots and Thorogoods, though.

Ear plugs... can be bought at Lowes or any supply store.

That's your basic safety list. You won't need much more than that for school. Hopefully for you, they will provide tools. Otherwise this is a basic list for a welder's bucket:

1 half round bastard file

2 wire brushes (one for carbon, one for stainless)

This is, honestly, all you will ever need as a welder. If you end up with a job that does other mechanical shit, you will need more tools like a set of wrenches, ratchet and sockets, various clamps, etc.

I usually work for bigger contractors that will supply all the power tools and typically have a gang box of hand tools that supplies what I don't have or don't want to bring. When I go to work, I bring my 5 gallon bucket (for a seat mostly), and a canvas backpack. In the bucket is that list above. I put shit I need in the canvas bag if I'm going to be moving around between joints so I don't have to lug around a heavy bucket. At any given time there are only a few main tools in my bag. A chipping hammer, a wire brush, a file, a level, combo square, a 4lb hammer, flashlight, and my tungsten holder. It's all you will ever really need if you're just welding.

This one's been going strong for 2 years. I did have to drill an extra hole it two for the little pins that adjust the to make it work, but it's better than what the hood came with

I'm not sure how well it works with stick arc, but this helmet works great with TIG and has a shade variability from 4-13. 4 sensors on it as well as a delay and sensitivity setting on it. It changes in the same speed that the one you found changes in and i think all the parts of replaceable including the batteries.

It is more expensive but it looks like one piece that you can take the side knobbies off completely. The only adjustments are the top strap and the back knob.

I know a guy who swears by this helmet he got on the cheap while attending trade school. And Lanse from Youtube (Chucke2009) likes the brand, too. He did a review on a more expensive one, but this one should be fine for a budget starter. I have a Miller one and a Radnor one, both $250+

Yeah it’s I higher end hood I also have a fiber metal pipeliner hood with a auto tint filter lenses Auto tint filter lenses that set up would be like $140 ish maybe lower that is a very rugged hood they last forever

Are you using this one? I found that if you move the middle strap so it sits further back on your head it tends to sit better. Also, did you cut the front strap off?

can’t go wrong with the pipeliner by fibre metal. I cut off the front and put a sellstrom flip front and an auto darkening lens in. The clear lenses should be supplied at just about every employer and they are cheap anyway.

I also have a Lincoln viking 3350 and I absolutely recommend it but I prefer my custom pipeliner.

Edit: Also, you can keep the fixed shade in your bag just in case your auto lens malfunctions.

That's a pancake hood. It's essentially goggles with a face shield attached, and a shield on the side, it prevents glare from the sun from getting in your eyes, and the shield keeps slag and shit from falling onto your face.

A Pipeliner (also known as the best helmet ever manufactured) is this. It's lightweight, indestructible, paintable, and has the sex appeal of a shirtless Theodore Roosevelt punching a bear. That's a lot of sex appeal.

I would suggest starting with the passive, but whatever lens you choose i would still go with the pipeliner because of it's durability and lightweight.

Check this out. Not as good as a motorcycle helmet but it is inconspicuous.

I bought one of these a few years ago when I started getting into hobby welding with a cheapish flux core MIG machine (Lincoln weld-pak HD), and it's been great.

I don't know how well it would stand up to heavy use, but for me it's been a great helmet, and dirt cheap. Once I got the sensitivity and delay dialed in, I've never had any problems with arc flash (apart from the few times I forget to lower it >_<).
